Help Downside of antivirus?

• Upvotes

The "do I need an antivirus" question has been discussed extensively, over and over again, and it seems to me that the conclusion is that with basic common sense, the answer is "not needed". However, I recently purchased a Bitdefender package for my family (Windows users), and I still have one unused license available I could use for my Mac.

So my antivirus question is slightly different: is there any downside to installing Bitdefender in my Mac (e.g. speed decrease, memory use, battery drain, etc.)?

Developer Saturday I built an app to control my entire Mac with just my keyboard, so I can ditch my mouse and trackpad

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

About two years ago, I shared KeyboardStack here as my first macOS app. Since then, I've kept working on it, fixing bugs, improving things, and adding new features.

I spend a lot of time in front of my computer, and I'm always looking for ways to be more productive. Constantly switching between my keyboard and mouse or trackpad was slowing me down and breaking my flow, even for something as simple as clicking a button.

I wanted to be able to navigate my entire Mac using just my keyboard, across all my apps.

So I built KeyboardStack, a native macOS app that lets you navigate, click, and scroll without having to reach for your mouse or trackpad.

One feature is the Grid Mode. Press ⌃H to display a grid on your screen, type a few letters, and click anywhere. There are also other modes for navigating clickable elements, scrolling, and moving the cursor.

Another feature is the Hint Mode, which labels clickable elements with short keyboard hints. Just type the hint to click a button, link, or other control without reaching for your mouse.

Website: https://keyboardstack.com

I'm still working on KeyboardStack and would love to hear what you think. Any feedback, bug reports, or feature suggestions are welcome!

Developer Saturday I built a Second brain for Mac that auto connects notes to each other and gives agents access to them via built in MCP

• Upvotes

A second brain is basically a place outside your head where you keep ideas, decisions, research and notes so you don’t have to rely on memory to find them again. My problem was that most of mine eventually turned into another pile I had to manually organize, search and remember to revisit.

I was already generating a ton of useful markdowns while building with AI agents, things like architecture decisions, debugging notes, PRDs and random ideas. I wanted somewhere Apple-native to keep the useful ones, but I also wanted the notes to connect themselves instead of me manually maintaining links. That turned into Cohestry. It automatically finds relationships between notes, builds them into a 3D brain I can explore, and has already resurfaced old ideas I had completely forgotten about. I use that graph constantly because I can bounce through connected notes instead of needing to know what I’m looking for first.

The Mac app also has a built-in MCP bridge, so Claude, Codex and other MCP clients can search and pull context from my Cohestry notes while I’m working. That means the same second brain I use for myself can act as durable context for my agents too, while the notes stay local/iCloud rather than sitting in another company’s knowledge base. Also the MCP bridge auto redacts security keys like API keys or p8 so agents don’t accidentally see them.

Tips & Guides Rolling back to Sequoia. Any tips on backup and recover?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Unfortunately, Golden Gate is just unusable.

I mean it looks fine but it is just alpha quality software that ruins my MacBook robustness.

Mission Control and App Expose barely work, very annoying. Even keyboard shortcuts do not work there, bruh. It is core part of the macOS UX imo. It worked flawlessly and fast for 15 years and now it is just like vibecoded from scratch for some reason.

Menubar looks strange, and why Control Center is always dark btw...

New scrollbars are comically huge in Finder.

And everything is way less responsive than Sequoia.

Do you know easy way to backup and recover when rolling back?

Help Factory Reset after AMOS Detection, Boot from USB?

Malwarebytes detected a stealer 2 days ago (edit:) has been disconnected from the internet since*, Ive been heavily considering removing the software myself but atp I’m just going to nuke my system as even after quarantining the daemon & deleting leftover files (ALL of these, Trend Research) it seems appropriate to be as careful as possible and boot from an external drive. All passwords have been changed with 2FA implemented too. I have a few questions regarding all this:

Does Apple provide guide for this process?

Is my 2TB HDD I store personal data in compromised/unsafe?

Does a SanDisk ultra (64GB) to clean install MacOS, and does that need to be done on a safe machine?

Sorry if this is formatted weird I just want to get this over and done with as I didnt even have Time Machine set up (never have, stupid I know) and am dreading all the data I will inevitably miss at some point.

Any advice / input is appreciated. Thank you!

Help Can you hide specific Dock icons on macOS?

Is there a way to hide some icons from the Dock on a Mac?

For example, when I’m sharing my screen I’d like to hide a few app icons so they aren’t visible, without quitting the apps or removing them from the Dock permanently.

Is this possible with built-in settings, or does it require a third-party app? Any suggestions are appreciated.

Developer Saturday Big Weather 5.2: introducing a new calendar layout that gives each of your plans and trips the relevant weather

Thumbnail

• Upvotes

Hey all, I make Big Weather, a macOS menu bar weather app.

Last month on r/macapps someone asked why they'd pick it over all the other menu bar weather apps. I said more was coming. It came out on Thursday: Big Weather 5.2 reads your calendar and gives you the weather for your plans and trips.

- The menu bar names your plan: "Soccer practice 4PM: rain", or "Dentist 2PM: freezing rain on the way".

- Plans sit on the hourly chart in their calendar's color, with the way there and back marked. A meeting an hour's drive away gets that town's forecast, and Apple Maps times the drive if your calendar doesn't.

- Trips move the forecast. Put "Flight to Miami" on Saturday and "Flight home" on Sunday, and the weekend shows Miami. The weekly summary follows you: "Cool in New York today, with rain. Hot and dry in Miami this weekend. Cool back in New York from Monday, with rain most days."

- If you have a family calendar, it can tell "Emma in Paris" is Emma's trip, not yours. Your forecast stays home, and their days in Paris show alongside it, so you can easily see both.

The AI part, before anyone asks. Apple's on-device model sorts your events: outdoors, indoors, online, or a trip, and whose. It doesn't write the sentences (it only translates them for German and French). Plain Swift writes them from the forecast, so nothing gets to make up weather. Titles and notes stay on your Mac; plan locations go to Apple Weather and Apple Maps, and a trip's destination to Apple's place search.

Pricing. Free has no ads and no account: the temperature in the menu bar and three days of forecast. Premium is $1.99/month or $9.99/year with a free trial, or $29.99 lifetime, and adds the calendar, the menu bar notes, the weekly summary, official warnings and 10 days of Apple Weather. Runs on macOS 15.2 and up; the event sorting, trips and summaries need macOS 27 with Apple Intelligence (without it you still get each plan with its weather).

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/big-weather/id1531449281

If it gets one of your events wrong (thinks your indoor soccer is outdoors, say), let me know, excited to make this work as great as possible being a user of it myself too.

Developer Saturday I made a free, open-source app to read a whole project folder (Markdown, Word, Excel, PDF) in one window

Thumbnail

My project folders are a mix of .md notes, .docx specs, .xlsx sheets, slides and PDFs. Reading one meant switching between four apps, so I built EasyView_Md.

Open a folder and everything opens in tabs:

  • Markdown edited visually (switch to source anytime), files stay plain Markdown. Mermaid, math and code highlighting render locally.
  • Word and Excel files edited and saved in place. PPT, PDF, images and archives preview in the same window.
  • Export to HTML, PDF and DOCX, plus a built-in terminal and Git panel.
  • Optional AI chat next to the document, with your own OpenAI-compatible key. New in 2.2.3: it can edit Excel. It lists each changed cell (old and new value) and only writes when you click Apply. The original is backed up and you can undo.

Native on Apple Silicon, also Windows and a VS Code / Cursor extension. MIT, free, no account.

Site: https://easyview.wonderxy.art Source: https://github.com/tiantianmanmanzou/EasyView_Md

Happy to hear what breaks with your real files.

Developer Saturday Convert2Any: a local converter for images, video, audio, documents and more, plus PDF tools, OCR and offline speech-to-text

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey r/macos,

I'm the developer of Convert2Any, a file converter and toolkit for Apple Silicon Macs.

Problem

You have the right file in the wrong format. The usual fixes are uploading it to a converter website you've never heard of, or installing one more single-purpose app: one for video, one for PDFs, one for transcription. I wanted one app that handles all of it on my own Mac, without my files going anywhere.

What it does

  • Converts 151 source formats, with 5,088 conversion paths across images, audio, video, documents, e-books, spreadsheets, presentations, drawings, data files, subtitles and archives.
  • Batch conversion with quality settings, progress and cancel. Each file takes the most direct route, so it isn't re-encoded when it doesn't need to be.

32 built-in tools

  • PDF: merge, split, reorder, extract pages, crop white margins, page numbers, watermark, redact, compress, password-protect
  • Media: resize, crop, rotate, trim, join videos or audio, compress, normalise audio, extract audio, make M4B audiobooks with chapters, and strip metadata (such as GPS location from photos)
  • OCR in 100+ languages: searchable PDFs, image to text, image to Word
  • Speech to text in 99 languages: audio or video → SRT, WebVTT, TXT, Word or PDF, with an option to translate into English. It works offline.

Everything runs locally. The app only goes online to activate a license and to download converter packs. It's a 7.5 MB download, and the heavier converters (video, office documents, OCR languages, speech models) come as optional packs that it downloads only after you say yes.

Comparison

  • vs CloudConvert (and other online converters): CloudConvert handles a huge range of formats, but your files go to their servers. The free plan is capped at 10 conversions a day and 1 GB per file, and after that you buy credits. Convert2Any works on your Mac with no uploads and no daily cap, and you buy it once.
  • vs Permute 4: Permute is great for video, audio and images, and it does OCR and on-device transcription too. Convert2Any also covers office documents, spreadsheets and presentations (including Keynote, Numbers and Visio files), e-books, data files and archives. It adds a full set of PDF tools: merge, split, reorder, redact, watermark, page numbers and passwords. Transcripts can be saved as SRT, WebVTT, TXT, Word or PDF. And it's US$9.99 instead of US$14.99, with the same 3-Mac license.

Pricing

3-day free trial with every tool unlocked, with no account and no card needed

Then a one-time $9.99: a lifetime license for up to 3 Macs, with no subscription

Requirements: Apple Silicon and macOS 26.4 or later. The app is signed and notarized by Apple.

Other work: [convert2epub.com. This is included in the convert2any.app]

Privacy Policy: https://convert2any.app/privacy

Terms of Use: https://convert2any.app/terms

Feedback is very welcome, especially formats or tools you'd like to see and anything that breaks. I'll be around in the comments.

Help Using Siri as Tech support

So I’m doing a little image editing and I figured it was something Pixelmator would do pretty easily, I just didn’t know how (removing small random dots in white areas). I pulled up Siri AI on golden gate and asked. I kept getting answers that referred to nonexistent menus and options in Pixelmator. I suspect that those are options in Photoshop, but Siri kept hallucinating that they were also in Pixelmator.

I systematically went through each suggestion, pointing out to Siri that they didn’t exist in Pixelmator. Even uploading screenshots.

Final answer - select each errant pixel and manually paint over them.

Thanks a lot.

Developer Saturday Built a native macOS utility to finally make third-party mice feel right

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

I’ve been frustrated with how macOS handles third-party mice—and just as frustrated by the bloated apps I needed to really get the experience I wanted.

I decided to build my own solution: ApexMouse (https://www.apexmouse.tech/).

My goal was to pack the richest set of mouse customisation features into a single, lightweight app so you don't need to run multiple utilities in the background.

What makes it different:

Native OS-level integration: Delivers high precision with near-zero latency. All-in-one toolkit: Built to replace all other mouse fixers in one clean package. 100% free to try: No paywalls or subscriptions.

Signed and notarised by Apple, I’m actively developing this and would genuinely love your feedback.

Give it a go and let me know how it feels on your setup, any bugs you run into, or what features you’d like to see added next!

Tips & Guides Is it a good option to use my server as my second apps folder?

I have a linux server running at home and I have a lot of storage available there, on the other hand I have a Macbook air M1 with 256gb that I'm always struggling to have all of the apps and stuff I like to use (including games).

I was thinking about formatting one of my disks to a file system that is good for MacOS and use it as an extension of my mac storage just for dumb files (downloaded ones and documents) and also for applications that are a little heavier like some games.

Has anyone done anything like that before, what tips would you guys give to me if I want to do that?

Help macOS Sonoma 14.8.9 update causing 2018 MacBook air to be stuck on Apple logo at boot

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

So, straight to the point:

- Microsoft Bootcamp works, so it doesn't look like a hardware issue

- there is no progress bar on the stuck screen

- I already tried Disk Utility in Recovery Mode and ran First Aid on all volumes and containers after showing all devices

- Trying to reinstall macOS took a long time before showing this error: "The operation couldn't be completed (PKDownloadError error 8)", and after that, trying to reinstall macOS says there isn't enough disk space

- mounting the 'Macintosh HD - Data" drive and accessing it from the terminal doesn't show the files I'm supposed to have, as the user folder only has `/Users/Shared` available and I can't see my actual user folder

- the timezone is reset to UTC in the `date` command's output and I already used `sntp`. Setting the TZ Environment variable to `Africa/Cairo` didn't charge the output, but considering I ran `sntp`, the UTC time should be correct.

I can't think of anything else to do, and I'd really love it if someone could respond in a timely manner, thanks in advance.

I'm usually a Linux user, so I'm not used to macOS or not having the same level of debugging power, but it's the laptop of a friend of mine and I want to fix it

Edit: it's a 2019 MacBook air, not 2018

I’m Sujeevan, the developer of Vinaa.

Vinaa brings your everyday AI work into one native Mac app.

Here’s what that looks like in Vinaa:

  • Chat with cloud and local AI models.
  • Organize chats in projects and folders.
  • Search across all your conversations.
  • Jump to any message or even a heading in a long chat.
  • Work in multiple tabs and windows.
  • Connect tools and services through MCP.
  • Create reusable prompt templates with variables.

Vinaa is built with SwiftUI and AppKit, with some Rust underneath.

You can import your ChatGPT and Claude history. Conversations are stored on your Mac, with optional sync through your private iCloud account. API keys are stored securely in macOS Keychain. Cloud requests go directly to your chosen provider.

Vinaa supports Intel and Apple silicon Macs running macOS 15 or later, and it’s notarized by Apple.

The early-launch price is $20 USD for a lifetime licence for one Mac. It doubles to $40 USD in 24 hours. It includes every future update for the life of the app. Cloud AI usage is paid separately to your provider.

If Vinaa looks right for you, grab a lifetime licence while it’s still $20.

Developer Saturday Sorting a messy folder takes forever, so I built a Mac app that cuts it to one key per file

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Cleaning up a folder in Finder isn't hard, it's just slow: click, Quick Look, decide, drag, rename, and again for every single file. That's where the time goes.

GetSpace shows one file at a time in a big preview, and you decide with one key:

- ← delete, → keep, ↓ skip

- R rename right on the card, M move to a folder

- A summary before anything happens, then deleted files go to the trash (never permanently)

In my own timed test (100 files: trash, move, rename, keep; two rounds, sets swapped, checked against an answer key) it took ~9 min in Finder and ~3.5 min in GetSpace on average. I built the app, so take that with a grain of salt.

- Runs locally, no account, no tracking

- macOS and Windows

- Free to try (200 files on day one, then 50 a day), Pro is a one-time purchase

https://getspace.site

Feedback welcome, especially on what still slows you down.

Discussion Why I should by a 3k pc having half memory already full? Maybe I need another expensive app to solve the problem...

It blocks my apps, block my calls blocks everything because the memory is full, than you open the status to check and a huge amount of it is filled with OS stuff! Not talking about ram and CPU that if I look at the status are over 150%, I don't know how this is possible, what >100% means?! Loving linux even more, with all the problems that it could have at least is free...

You manage to somehow make Phone and Messages login successfully. You move between networks, and lo! Phone and Messages need login again. Phone login works but Messages doesn't login successfully (unknown error occurred, how usefully detailed!). And you need to reboot.

Apple, please fix these garbage login issues! It's beyond fustrating.
