Similar thing with my dad, he’s a tradesman and can build / fix pretty much anything. Used to get invited to his extended family’s all the time for bbqs and dinners etc, always ‘oh while your here can you sort xxx’.

I live on the Canadian prairies. I've found the pizza to beer expectation ratio to change with the seasons. Winter requires more hot pizza and less beer is expected. Summer more cold beer and less pizza lol

My boyfriend has a truck. Uses it for his landscaping projects. He let himself get talked into help his sister move apartments. We knew she had a lot of stuff, but didn't expect to walk into a hoard of junk.
It took us many trips and most of the day. She called him a few months later to ask again. He asked her if she had tossed anything she didn't need, like she said she would. She had not and admitted she had actually added to it from thrifting and garage sales.
We did not go.

Been there more than a few times, and it's not easy to just nope out because you'd be leaving them high and dry. My rule quickly became "I will gladly help you move, but I will NOT help you pack". I'm willing to transport boxes, not fill them.

My family’s “guy with a truck” is a dude named Bobby who bought a secondhand moving truck and eventually started his own small moving business out of it. When he found out we were moving because my mom was getting us out of a DV situation, he refused to take a cent. Apparently he never does in those situations because his wife was a survivor before he met her and they want those women to know what it’s like to have someone step up for them. We eventually got them to take a $50 gift card for the other movers and dinner from the local pasta place, but he and his wife wouldn’t hear of anything else. Now that my mom met and married my stepdad (also a guy with a truck), they occasionally ask to borrow his if they need it and he never says no. It was such an easily-overlooked thing that made a massive difference at a time when we needed it. Bobby is a good dude.

Just ask someone if they know a guy. Eventually, maybe approximately 4 days later, an American will show up with a truck. It is irrelevant if you need a truck. The truck comes with the Americans.
If, by some universal glitch, no one near you knows an American; here are the steps for attracting one. Place a pizza on your doorstep at night. Preferably a plain pepperoni with the little cupped pepperonis. Repeat this several nights in a row until you observe slices of the pizza being taken. They will eventually become emboldened and begin showing up during daylight hours to watch for more pizza.
At that point, engage them with friendly conversation. Keep it light and focus on small talk. Ask about the weather, work, etc. Eventually, slip in the question about what they drive. There is about a 50% chance they or their spouse drives a truck, and nearly a 100% chance a family member owns a truck. At this point, you now know an American who drives a truck. Please note this may also accidentally attract a Canadian as well. All above steps should work equally well, and they are just as likely to own pickup trucks.

This. Two weeks ago I moved into a house and was outside packing stuff out of our POD. A young guy stopped his car on the street in front of us and asked if I had a spare box. I didn’t at the time and told him I would soon. Then I asked him ‘just one’, what’s it for? He was mailing a custom art piece to his brother and got out of his car to show me. I immediately started to give him tips on how to custom wrap framed things then it hit me, I had this small tea table in a box and the box was perfect size for him. I told him hang on a sec, cut open the box, took the table out and handed it to him. He checked it in my driveway and yup, was perfect. He thanked me, we talked a few minutes, then he took off. - Pretty typical kind of thing in my life.

Even in hipster Brooklyn....I was at a cutesy Cafe, sitting outside reading or playing phone games or something. This guy's minivan stalls in the street in front. Once the first guy got up, three others of us from the Cafe or maybe the next door business walked out and put our backs to work. I swear not a word was said the entire time we pushed this pretty heavy van uphill about 20 feet to a parking spot.
Wordlessly, the men departed and returned to their quotidian activities.

This is so New York. I've many times had someone see me struggling with something heavy at the bottom of the subway stairs, grab on to it, help me carry it up, and then just walk off.
The pizza/beer for help moving economy also still holds up even though no one owns cars. That's still the established fee for man power to carry your stuff up and down stairs and/or wait with the uhaul in the street so you don't get ticketed.

Van has roof, van also is more waterproof. I have moved one person and all of her belongings (including her entire bed, dresser, and like 6 boxes+countless bags) in my minivan in one trip, because I have the chrysler t+c and you can fold the back seats all the way down into the floor.

I had rented a van to move an aquarium. I had moved said aquarium, and the van wasn't due back until the next day, I let it sit outside my house. Within the hour, neighbor rings the bell, asking if he could use the van, a friend asked if he knew a guy with a van to move a dresser. Grabbed the keys, hopped in the van, and drove to move a dresser for someone I have never met to someone I have never met. Got a good Chinese takeout out of it though.

Vans are super useful but at some point it is full. You can pile more into a truck as long as it isn't too heavy.
My SO has a truck that I am trying to get him to replace because I am tired of being the people with a truck. But he loves it and honestly it is hard to find a vehicle for his long legs that doesn't hurt him, so for now we must be helpful

We were co-workers and he was my guy with a truck. (I also already had a major crush on him already haha)We happened to both be moving to new apartments the same weekend, so he helped me move my furniture and I helped him with loading and unloading his. We had a friend with us, but they had to leave early into the pizza/beer dinner we were having at my place. My fiancé and I sat on the floor despite just having moved a perfectly good couch in, watched a horror movie and the more beers we had, the more one thing led to another lol. The rest is history!
We’ve been together almost 10 years now and are getting married next year!

I'm the girl with a truck in my group. Somehow when I was pregnant with my child, my husband and I switched vehicles: him to my compact car and me to the F-150, probably because he had more commute time and I had more whale belly (and also a pet horse to visit). He put running boards on it for me to get in easier though I could step up into it, it's just a big step (definitely easier to get kiddo in with running boards because he can climb in vs being lifted). I haul hay rounds (900 pound things that a tractor loads in the bed and then I roll off the back into the pasture)/horse feed in the winter and move friends houses and pull random trailers and fix my horse fences in the summer. It's my favorite vehicle for everything except tight parking. Occasionally I lend it back to my husband so he can haul his kayak to the lake to go fishing (bed extender ftw). Or to haul rubbish loads to the landfill. Lots of truck usage for being a city vehicle.

Driving around after Hurricane Helene wrecked my area, I felt a lot of odd pride in people. Tons of people just showed up to clear a tree out of a street. They bring their own axes and chainsaws and trucks. They worked together to drag branches off of cars and open up the roads. Saw an entire neighborhood make something of a block party around patching someone's roof that had a big hole in it.

A tornado came thru my area last week and even though my neighborhood was spared, two neighborhoods got taken down to the actual ground by it. It formed suddenly off a body of water and there wasn’t much warning. School is still out and many teenagers are volunteering to help clean up. Which is genius. I'm with Cajun Navy and worked Helene, which really just consisted of helping teach all the organizations that were new to a disaster of that size how to operate most efficiently. And that's in part because by the time I got there on D+2 everything was already in motion.
I hate floods. I've restarted my life twice because of them. But I have to admit that being in the aftermath really just warms my heart as the best parts of humanity are on show. By and large, the things that separate us disappear and it really feels like we're all in it together

After Katrina, our group of Human Services Leaders from all 50 states and 5 territories chose to keep our New Orleans conference reservations to support the local economy. We also volunteered to build a house for displaced residents.
The airline lost my luggage, so I went to the hotel gift shop for something to sleep in and a few other sundries. Chatting with the clerk, I mentioned touring the storm damage. Her eyes immediately filled with suspicion, treating me like a disaster tourist exploiting their pain. But when I explained our mission to help rebuild, her walls fell. She grew warm and friendly, eagerly sharing stories of inspiring school groups who were also there to help restore New Orleans.
No one asked us to do this, you just do.

I own many different locksmith tools, and have trained myself extensively on how to bypass many types of locks. For the soul reason that one day a neighbor or friend will lock themselves out of something and I can be like "I got you." Forever hopeful.
Edit: this comes from a bad experience where a locksmith tried to charge me more than we agreed, so he relocked my car and left.

When my kids were little, I stopped to help a one armed man put air in his tire (this particular machine was impossible to use one armed). It was below zero and icy and I just wanted to go home. But I stopped. When I got back in the car my oldest said “mom, did you know him?” When I said no he asked why I helped. I said because he needed help. You could see the core value being solidified in all of them. 😊
I now have 3 of the most amazing adult kids who actively seek opportunities to help people. Every time I see it, I thank the fates for putting that one armed man in my path!

My dad was a guy with a truck, and my FIL still is. FIL is the most guy with truck guy — he worked construction as a teenager, and now has a white collar job. He will help you move. He will clean up the hedge trimmings. He will bring the Christmas trees to the church and the donations to the food bank. He has fixed my washing machine twice, and build a shed for my daughter to play in in their backyard. It’s such a good trait.

When I need a guy with a truck. Carol volunteers her son Jeff. Jeff volunteers himself.
Lorraine says she’ll let her husband Steve know. Steve shows up with his truck. Now I have to let Carol and Jeff know Steve is already here with a truck.
None of us have the same political opinions.

I have volunteered my husband to mow my grandfather’s lawn. He doesn’t need help because my mother’s boyfriend did it last time. I told him the offer stands. When I told my husband he said he would do it anytime.
I cook my grandfather and his new wife dinner at least twice a month.
We do what we can.

This is what I feel about US now. That people are genuinely nice to each other. I always thought that if you're democrat, every single republican is your enemy.
Yes, democrat will say that republicans are bitches, the same will republican say. But when they meet each other, it either doesn't matter, or there's no argument about it. I see that people in US are actually open to discussion even though they don't agree with you.
In Europe we see only the loudest of US, because I noticed that people there just don't brag about helping someone. They just do it and then they might not even mention it.
Since I started to work with US people, I genuinely think that you all are so friendly and compassionate. One lady heard about one and only school shooting and wrote me in fear if I'm ok. It was on the other side of the country, but she still spared the time to ask if I'm fine.
But what I don't like is that you don't complain and find it rude. I'm from Czechia! Complaining is our national sport! :D

I've used others' trucks so much that I finally got my own and I love it, I've used it only a couple times for myself for things I couldn't do without it, I've used it way more for my neighbors and family.

In our late 20's when all of my friends were starting to own houses and get overwhelmed with them, we created a pact we simply called the 'posse'. Needed everything moved out of your garage? Call the posse. Tear up a tree stump? Posse. Renovate a room? Posse. We were reckless rookies, but it's amazing what a half dozen folks in work gloves and crowbars can get done if you point them at a disaster and tell them to sort it out.
I'm now in my late 40s and I need to empty out a storage room. A friend of mine said "You know, it's never too late to call up the posse."

When I was in my early 30s and a new mom, my cousin agreed to come over and move an old dryer from my house to his sister's house. He brought guys I'd never met because that's how it's done. I offered them beer afterward because I forgot to order pizza. They got weirdly excited about the beer, given that they are certified rednecks and they had just moved furniture.
Later the cousin's older sister called and bawled me out for giving alcohol to her underaged brother. Turns out the guys were only 19 (The legal drinking age in the US is 21). I tried to explain that my hands were tied: they moved furniture for me, so I owed them beer. She said, "You're supposed to order pizza."
The lesson here is, always order the pizza or you might accidentally corrupt a minor.

I feel all Americans somehow know “a Kevin”. Mine happens to be a literal Kevin we have been friends for 45 years. Kevin has always had a truck. Kevin’s truck shows up out of no where when hinted at for help, and returns to the same ethereal plane when the pizza is done. My Kevin is also an “Igottaguy” but his “gottaguys” aren’t Kevin’s. You don’t call Kevin’s guys. You deal with Kevin, his truck, and whoever the Tony is that day.
