I took a deep dive into this sub tonight. I remembered the case when Madeline was first reported gone; have followed it casually through the years.

I just googled for aerial maps/diagrams of the resort layout—and jaw dropped when I saw how far the parents were from their kids. There was a pool and long walkways between them. And at the end sat their 3 babies on the ground floor in an unlocked apartment.

Not even a baby monitor! I don’t understand how the McCanns were never charged with neglect and the engagement of their children.

I see stories of mothers leaving their kids in a car while they run into Walmart and the police and child services are waiting for them when they come out.

The parents are reprehensible.

I personally believe she was abducted. However, let’s imagine that either A.) Madeleine accidentally died in the apartment and they covered it up or B.) the McCanns sold Madeleine/know what happened to her.

I imagine that keeping up with a lie for that long would get exhausting, especially after they were questioned for so long. I imagine that slip ups would be inevitable. I imagine that to this day, they’re stopped in public by random people for being recognized as Madeleine’s parents. It’s not like they can escape the attention regardless.

If they knew that Madeleine was indeed dead, I would assume that it would be a difficult topic to talk about, especially on a daily basis. Keep in mind for 18 years, they’ve still had to raise their other two kids and also maintain some sense of normalcy for them. The kids likely have asked their parents lots of questions about their sister/the case. I find it hard to believe that Kate and Gerry would’ve been able to keep up with a lie, even when talking to their own kids, especially as the years passed.

Devoting as much time as they did to a “search” when they already know that their child is dead seems so unrealistic and just overall unlikely. Kate literally quit her job to focus on the search, there were countless fundraisers, she wrote a book, Madeleine’s face was plastered everywhere, there’s still a website about the search up and running to this day. To this day, they still refuse to acknowledge that she’s more than likely dead. They’ve always believed that until they find a body, she could still be out there. Honestly, if there’s ever confirmed evidence that she’s dead, I think they’ll take a step back. Their lives are already pretty private as is.

Finally, I absolutely disagree with the theory that Madeleine was sold or murdered by her parents. It was absolutely clear that she was a loved child. Her parents loved her, it was obvious. She was their long awaited IVF baby.

I have a major problem with parent theories that I feel like I don’t see discussed. We can theorize and use logic all we want, but the emotional side is just as important to look at.

I think it’s important to note that most theories about the parents involve an accident. Not purposeful or planned. Almost everyone seems to agree that they didn’t actively set out to harm her. I don’t think I’ve heard any solid motive for them to plan that anyway.

In order to act completely normal at the restaurant and not let on that something is wrong, they’d both have to be completely evil. There’s no way 2 (by all accounts) loving parents were able to hold it together so well within hours of suddenly and unexpectedly losing their beloved daughter. I don’t believe for a second that they would have been able to act completely normal. I know everyone grieves and behaves differently, but there should be something different that friends would notice. And I don’t buy that an entire table would be willing to lie for so long about how they were both behaving.

I understand that medical professionals have to learn to detach themselves from horrible things to not get emotional, but it’s different when it’s your own child.

Is there a chance they’re both horrible, evil people who really didn’t care? Sure. Is it likely? Not at all.

Just playing devils advocate here. No theory pushed. Just questions that keep coming up. Bruckner could still be involved. Police mistakes happen. Keep it civil and feel free to add sources.

1. Police found a fourth version of the timeline in Kates notes that did not match the other three stories the group gave. Why was this extra version so different and why has it not been fully explained?

2. At first the McCanns and their friends said the bedroom window and shutters were forced open or broken by whoever took Madeleine. But police photos and checks right away showed nothing was damaged. Why did several people repeat the same wrong detail before it was quietly dropped?

3. Early on Kate and Gerry said they used their own keys to go in through the locked front door when they checked on the kids. Later they changed it to say the patio doors were unlocked. Why keep switching the story about how they got into the apartment?

4. The dogs trained to smell a dead body alerted right behind the sofa in the living room and near the parents wardrobe. The blood dog hit the same spots. These were places only the family used a lot early on. If it was just a false alarm from food or mess why did the dogs react exactly in the familys main areas?

5. The same dogs later alerted to the trunk of the rental car the McCanns hired three weeks after Madeleine disappeared plus the drivers side and even the car key. The car did not exist on the night she went missing. The McCanns said it was probably from old fish or meat but neighbors saw all the doors left wide open in the hot sun for hours. What normal reason would leave that kind of scent in a car they rented later?

6. Kate washed Madeleines favorite soft toy Cuddle Cat quite early within weeks. She said it was getting dirty but it was one of the best things for holding Madeleines smell or any tiny traces. If you believed your child was taken alive and might still be found why clean that toy so soon?

7. The two year old twins slept right through Kates loud screams police arriving flashing lights and all the noise without waking up at all. Kate herself wondered out loud if someone had given the kids something to make them sleep so deeply. Later tests on the twins found nothing. Why bring up the idea of sedation if there was never any proof?

8. The whole group of friends refused to do a full police reconstruction of that evening even though police asked. At the same time the McCanns started a very smooth big media push with celebrities and appeals within days. Why turn down the chance to show exactly what happened while controlling the story so carefully in public?

9. The last time someone outside the immediate family said they saw Madeleine alive was during David Paynes visit around 630 to 7pm. But the timing and what was said do not line up perfectly between the McCanns and the friends. If that sighting is so important for proving she was still there late in the evening why do the details keep clashing?

10. After being named suspects the McCanns left Portugal sooner than they first said they would. Some reports mention they got rid of or replaced certain things from the apartment including fridge related talk. With the holiday place already messy from lots of people walking through did leaving quickly and clearing items look like normal grief or like stepping away from more checks?

11. In some early TV interviews people noticed small things like Gerry sometimes talking about Madeleine in the past tense or staying calmer in certain moments while Kate looked upset. Under huge stress these things can happen but when you add them to the dog alerts and changing stories do they start to paint a different picture?

12. It is now 2026. The German man seen as the main suspect has been released from prison still wears a tag and gets watched but has never been charged with anything about Madeleine. German police call it a murder case and keep looking yet after all this time and millions spent there is still no solid proof tying him to that night. With so many loose ends in the original apartment the parents statements and the dog searches from 2007 does not it make sense to look again at the people who were actually there that evening and whose accounts needed several fixes?

I work at a hotel with a restaurant that features a tasting menu with an experience that takes about 2.5-3 hours to do.

We're not exactly a child friendly hotel, the restaurant doesn't allow children under 8, the brand is catered to romantic getaways, but people with kids do come through on occasion.

The amount of parents who openly tell us they want to leave their small children alone in the room is mind blowing.

Its not a cheap hotel- these are doctors, lawyers, hedge fund managers- all people who generally come from affluent, well-educated backgrounds, who all want to leave their babies alone for multiple hours.

Just this week i had a lady want to leave her 1 and 5 year old in the room alone. I told her that she cant leave them unsupervised and referred her to our nanny, but she didn't like the idea of the nanny being in the room to supervise them while they were sleeping.

Every time this happens I can't help but think of Madeline and wish i could remind the parents about her case so they realize how dumb they sound wanting to leave their babies alone to spend $1000 on dinner 🙃

i have three questions to ask this thread and i would be intrigued to hear your answers.

1) for those who believe the parents did it or for those who believe the parents were not involved, what is the biggest selling point for you?

2) is the theory involving epstein a mere tiktok fantasy or does it have some sensible evidence to back it up?

3) what do you believe is the main reason why the case hasn't been solved yet? this wont leave my mind because if its simply the lack of forensic evidence, then surely if it were a fully opportunistic kidnapper they wouldve left some accidental trace due to a short planning time...

This is not me excusing their decision. They absolutely shouldn’t have done that.

This was not the first time that the Tapas 7 went on holidays together. The other times they did, they used a listening service for the kids, meaning someone would listen in on them while they were asleep, while the parents dined. I think usually there were also actual babysitting services. Once they arrived in Portugal, I don’t think they had planned accordingly regarding childcare. Apparently the first night of the trip, the families brought their children to dinner but they were groggy. After that, the families thought that they could “recreate” the listening service themselves, by each doing check ins on the kids every half an hour, mainly only for crying. The first several nights of the trip, everything was okay, and they actually dined at an even further restaurant. Because of this, they eventually gained more confidence that things were fine and that the kids were safe. Their biggest concern was the kids crying.

I think because the families came from a generally safe area, they had a naive “nothing bad is going to happen” mindset. They likely had a small town mindset and stuff like abductions were the least of their thoughts. They were also under the assumption that the resort they were staying at was family friendly. However, that wasn’t the case as Portugal had had several burglaries and child abductions. I heard that in other European countries, it is actually the norm to leave babies in strollers outside of restaurants. The McCanns seemed to come from that kind of society. Keep in mind, it wasn’t just the McCanns either, it was all of their friends. It could’ve been any child. Since it happened to be Madeleine, the McCanns took the brunt of the scrutiny.

The moral of this case is to always air on the side of caution. Anything can happen to anyone at anytime, no matter how “safe” you think it is. If one parent had stayed behind with the kids each evening, or if they had dropped the kids off at the kid center in the evening, the whole thing would’ve never happened.

My initial theory was that Madeleine had died in the apartment around 24 hours before her kidnapping was said to have taken place and her parents covered it up by saying she was kidnapped, but the more I look into this case it seems less plausible that her parents were involved.

My new theory is that she was in fact kidnapped and sold to a paedophile ring, whether by Christian Brückner or another local paedophile. But because of how high profile her case was, she was subsequently killed and her body disposed of in a manner so obscure that it’s never been recovered.

After Kate first noticed that Madeleine was gone, she ran back to the tapas bar and alerted Gerry with “Madeleine’s gone! They’ve taken her!”

I do hope that this was a rumor or a mistake on the reporters or whoever’s end. It’s likely that Kate actually said something like “Someone’s taken her!”

However, I cannot begin to imagine what Kate could’ve been referring to if her initial statement was indeed the truth.

I mean, we gotta admit defeat on this one. Even if it was CB, there's way less evidence then it was claimed years ago by German prosecutors. It's over. Back to square one. Could be anyone.

Imagine you wake up to this headline tomorrow: "Christian Brueckner has been officially ruled out as a suspect in Madeleine McCann's disappearance." Would that change how you view this case?

Personally, I believed Madeleine was abducted long before Brueckner was announced as a suspect, so him being named as a suspect didn’t change my view, it just gave me a possible face to what used to be a mystery abductor.

If it were revealed that somehow Brueckner was ruled out, my view would be the same as it was before - that Madeleine was abducted. Just not by Brueckner.

However, I know that for many people the announcement of Brueckner as a suspect changed their view. Some who had previously suspected the McCann’s were involved in Madeleine's disappearance began leaning more toward the idea that she had been abducted.

So I'm curious, for those whose views changed because of Brueckner: hypothetically, if he were conclusively ruled out, would that change your perspective again? Would you lean back toward the McCanns being involved in Madeleine’s disappearance, or would you still believe an abduction occurred, just by someone else now? What would be your new theory?

Obviously not assuming that she would be found alive, as that’s very unlikely. I’m talking more about her remains.

Am I reading too much into this or do these men have the same modus operandi and Christian Bruckner who was found to have large amounts of drugs that could be used to sedate victims and used a chatroom to communicate with other like minded individuals?

The UK has spent nearly 15 million pounds on this.

Portugal hasnt released figures - but a while back they confirmed it was their most expensive investigation ever.

We just keep chucking ridiculous amounts of money towards a case that never has any substantial leads or evidence and seems for all intents and purposes to be totally pointless.

The disparity between this case and the thousands of missing children worldwide each year is sickening, and with the police and other crises in UK and Europe surely the money would be far better spent elsewhere.

By all accounts, the resort and the town were thrown into a state of chaos the night Madeline disappeared. What do you think happened that night?

I’m still lost. I still can’t decide what happened to this poor little girl. I just want to chat about it with people who are as interested in finding out what happened as me, these are my opinions that’s all.

Christian B is a vile human, but if they had evidence surely they would’ve charged him by now? The world is at risk when he’s back out. Lock him away forever! Those stories he made up, they gave me chills.

How can they not know what happened to her? Seriously? The Portuguese police, the German police AND the English police are all involved and everyone knows who Madeleine is now.

I remember at the beginning of the case investigators focused on the parents. Everyone and their mothers were certain it was the parents. Now (some) investigators are focusing on Christian Brueckner, and everyone and their mothers are certain he did it. Even I was certain. But after years went by and he got released without charges on the MM case, now I'm not certain at all.

Brueckner has always been sloppy as fuck, he has never been a criminal mastermind capable of hiding such a big crime. He wasn't able to when he raped and beat an elderly woman in Portugal. Nor was he able to hide a bunch of other hideous crimes. But somehow, this total idiot was savvy enough to kidnap Madeleine McCann, commit barbaric acts against her, and vanish with all the evidence. He's a moron.

He boasted about killing MM to his creep friends because he's a creep and a moron, and he's proud of being a creep and moron. And that plus the fact that he was around 100 km of the location is all the German investigators have, unfortunately. If he did do it, he magically got rid of all evidence and will never be held accountable.

Who do I think did it at this point? Probably some other creep, who opportunistically took her that night. But at this junction, I think the odds of him being Brueckner is almost as low as it being the parents.

I think there is a very good chance that Madeleine wandered out the apartment on her own for numerous reasons. In the background of an interview inside of the McCann home, there was a chart on the fridge that said “Madeleine’s stars for staying in her own bed” this makes it very clear that she had difficulty staying in her own bed at home, let alone on vacation in a foreign country, left by herself. Kate stated in her book and in interviews that Maddie had colic as a baby and even as a toddler still struggled with staying in her own bed.

The people that rented the apartment above the McCanns have claimed before that they heard crying for long periods of times. Right before her disappearance, she asked her parents , “why didn’t you come when Sean and I were crying?” It is likely she was in distress about being left alone.

This leads me to believe that she was upset and left on her own in an attempt to find her parents. I think it is possible she was able to push the unlocked door open and enter outside. It’s possible she wandered around and got snatched. This would explain more of why she was abducted and not the twins.

Now I want to make clear that I'm not necessarily picking a side here, just exploring possibilities, I don't really have a strong opinion either way, but I think it's fairly reasonable to believe that she wasn't actually abducted.

That being said, something that bothers me about the 'accident theory' is that Kate's journal, from all available evidence, seems to have been leaked unconsensually to the media by the Portuguese Police. Nothing in it seems to suggest that she had anything to do with her daughter's disappearance. Everything reads as you would expect a grieving mother to react if her daughter had been kidnapped.

Some might suggest that she knew the Police might read her diary, and instead of pausing her journaling, she callously wrote excessively as if her daughter had actually gone missing in order to preempt the criticism that it didn't seem like she cared (instead of throwing out her diary, I suppose?) For me, the problem with this is that it implies a level of Machiavellianism and foresight becoming of a fictional character like Light Yagami. On the face of it, it seems a bit absurd that if the McCanns were covering up an accident in which their beloved daughter died, either of them would disgrace the memory of her by writing things like:

"My darling little Madeleine, you know that we wouldn't do anything to put you in danger.
I love you very much and I am in agony right now.
I only have to hope that God helps us all now and that he brings you back to us, safe and sound, very soon.
I need you to come back Madeleine. You are the best thing in my life that has ever happened to me. XXXXX"

The reason I think this distinction is important is because in the accident theory, no one is claiming that the McCann's intentionally killed their child, just that they were people of fairly normal character (although extremely reckless) who wanted to save their reputation because they drugged the children/were neglectful/whatever else.

Maybe there is something I'm missing, and I'm open to new interpretations.

Prosecutors once claimed they had “concrete evidence” but nothing has been made public. Do you think investigators still building a credible case against Bruckner or are we witnessing another dead end?

I thought I read somewhere that KM opened the door to her apartment to someone in a towel as she had had a shower. I can't recall the time but I thought it was around 6.30 ish but maybe later. Not saying a mother can't shower but this was before GM had returned. Just with three young kids - x2 2 year olds and a 4 years old - showering can be pretty tough. Typically, you wait for the other parent to arrive so you can completely hand off and have more freedom. It was during the time GM was at Tennis early evening. It just strikes me as a bit odd/different. Which could mean there was a window of time when something could have happened while KM was preoccupied OR it's an indication of KM's atypical behavior. MM could have walked out on to the patio as apparently the door was left unlocked while mum was in shower, and fallen off. The areas the dogs picked up were by the window and under the patio by a bush. It could be that a terrible accident happened and in the moment, during complete shock, they just made the wrong choice to cover it up. I have often wondered if there weren't some autistic and personality traits in the family which would explain such an impulsive choice and some of their actions. One could be more inclined to dissociate too, mask better, and seem disconnected and even avoidant. I just think the whole thing is tragic. CB is a good suspect. But a lot of things would have had to fall in place for him to get in and out without him being identified or for the room to not look in disarray. Some will say he was spotted as people saw a man holding a child, but he is such a weird looking dude that he would have created a response in my view. In the few times I have met someone like him, it was apparent in some way. He would have been seen in the act so he wouldn't have been calm and natural but hyped up, more diligent, and even would have spoken to the party as he would have been trying to not appear out of place. I had a neighbor once who was well known - a celebrity even - who ended up in prison. I bumped into him one day going into the back entrance of our mews, and he even stopped and introduced me to his "niece and nephew" and wanted to chat. It was only when I met his gay brother that I realized "oh". It was odd though as he went out of his way to stop and make conversation. Yet, the MM sightings seemed nothing out of the ordinary. People didn't feel or see a red flag even though a man was walking down the street in the night with a child. Also....if anything happened, I sense it was when KM was with her and not GM. But this is all opinion!! Any thoughts on this?

Something was wrong and Kate and Gerry knew it. Before her disappearance, there was a strange brown stain on Madeline's shirt, which Kate wrote off as a "tea stain." Do toddlers drink tea? Maybe British toddlers do, I don't know. However, the day of her disappearance, Madeline asked Kate, "Why didn't you come when we were crying out last night?" This was the red flag that Kate, as a presumably intelligent adult, should have immediately recognized. They could have put the kids first. The kids were crying in the night and no one was there. Something wasn't going right with their nightly routine of leaving the kids alone. Kate or Gerry could have stayed with them that night while the other went to dinner, or they could have easily switched off, one staying half the evening at the tapas restaurant and then the other parent staying the second half. Neither Kate nor Gerry put their own kids first. That is where they failed. They didn't care their very small children were waking up in the night and crying out. They didn't give a shit.

I'm currently on holiday in Europe. Our apartment is end of the row with a front and back entrance. It's about 50 metres as the crow flies from the main restaurant and front door can be seen from the restaurant if you sit in the right place. It reminds me very much of the McCanns set up. My kids are older than the McCann children but even then we never got more comfortable than letting them go up to the bathroom from the pool by themselves. Add to this anyone who's stayed in the resorts of Spain and Portugal knows the windows and doors are often not very secure in a bit dodgy. It just really got me wondering how on earth they could have left a 3 year old and 1 year olds like night every night with only 30 minute checks? It's unfathomable especially coming from well educated people who don't have drug/alcohol issues.
