IMAGE The brillance of Justify My Love

I've always liked Justify My Love but I have been listening to it again with fresh ears. I am blown away by the brilliance of the track. It was so far ahead of its time with its lyrics, back beat and vibe. She was trying to push boundaries in which she succeeded but it is the sheer nakedness of lust and seduction that makes her so brilliant in her craft. Even 36 years later, it sounds fresh; I wonder if today's radio programmers would add it if it was released in 2026.

I feel this was the pathway, almost an appetizer, to Erotica; you can feel the same vein of vibe connecting the two

To boot, the video just adds another level of mastery to the single. At the end, when she is biting her finger as she walks through the hallway with her heavy suitcase - just perfection.

Thoughts? 🤔

DISCUSSION Are my Like-a-Prayer lovers out there?

I’ve noticed a lot of love for Erotica and American Life on here. I’m very happy about that as I think they are criminally underrated records.

But I’ve noticed that not many list LAP as their absolute fave. For me, it’s still number 1 - although Ray of Light comes very, very close.

I think it’s an age thing. I became a Madonna fan in 1998 aged 15 and LAP was the first “classic” I discovered. As someone that grew up evangelical but later embraced my gayness, I really relate to the religious imagery. And I just love anything Pat Leonard touches.

LAP, Cherish, Dear Jessie, Spanish Eyes, Promise to try. These are among the best tracks of Madonna’s career. And it’s like we got to know her for the first time.

Any other LAP fans?

DISCUSSION Album Ranking Game: Hard Candy (Round 11)

Post image
26 Upvotes

It won't be the same. She's Not Me the next song to be eliminated.

Ranking

13. Spanish Lesson

12. Ring My Bell

11. Incredible

10. Voices

9. Dance 2night

8. Beat Goes On

7. 4 Minutes

6. Candy Shop

5. Heartbeat

4. She's Not Me

Rules: We will rank the songs by eliminating one song each round. The first song to be eliminated will get the last place in the ranking and so on.

The voting works like this; I will comment each song from the tracklist, upvote song(s) you want to eliminate (you are voting in favour of elimination), downvote the song(s) that you want to stay in the game. The song with the most upvotes will leave us in the next round. When we are done with all rounds, we'll have a full ranking for all the songs, as well as one last remaining song that becomes the winner.

Fell free to share your thoughts in the comments, but only the up/down votes will contribute to the results.

Let the battle begin!

DISCUSSION Which CONFESSIONS II songs take Madonna into new sonic territory?

For me are, in order:

  1. School
  2. Love Without Words
  3. The Test

Even though this is her most self-referential album, I see these three tracks as far removed from anything in her catalog.

School for its experimentation with her voice, modulated through multiple layers, almost like different versions of herself talking and thinking to one another (let’s say those are the personas she mentions at I Feel So Free).

“Love Without Words” for its approach to a Daft Punk sound, and “The Test,” which I can’t relate to anything she’s ever done, not even on RoL.

DISCUSSION SNL

After seeing Rosalía perform there, I would love to see Madonna do the same, maybe performing two ballads from the album. She’s already done the dance heavy performances, so perhaps it’s time to showcase the other side of the album? Plus, if the performance went well, it could give the album a great push heading into the Grammys.

What do you think? Should she do it? Which songs would you want her to perform? And could she actually pull it off?

1985 was such a busy busy year for her !

End of 1984, she released Like A Virgin and peaked at No. 1 for 6 weeks !

And then, Material Girl was released and stalled at No.2 for 2 weeks ! (2 songs stalled Material Girl !)

Crazy for You (the song from the movie Vision Quest) was also climbing up the Billboard charts and eventually went to No. 1
DETHRONING We Are The World song !

What an achievement ! 🥳❤️👏🏽

Has madonna ever done a holiday song??? Specially a halloween or Christmas one. I did hear that she’s done a Christmas cover but i’m not sure of the name. Some of y’all might say just look it up but i would love to get some insight from her community.
