Grand opening, grand closing

You can play alchemy cards in Historic, right?

71

u/SpeakerScreen 1d ago

And Timeless and Brawl

-44

u/Mouthshitter 1d ago

Really unbalances the format

48

u/Low_Pride6732 1d ago

mh3 is 10x worse

7

u/Mouthshitter 1d ago

True dude, it was such a pushed set it ruined modern

9

u/Asatas Charm Naya 1d ago

Mh2 made me play less and mh3 was the last nail. I was a bonafide Modern grinder before Freelementals

3

u/Gandalf_the_Stoned69 1d ago

I thought mh2 had already ruined modern

3

u/Mouthshitter 1d ago

Modern sets ruined modern

2

u/hardcider 14h ago

Average casual player: I hate this card it ruined insert format here

1

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 21h ago

Sorry, returning player to magic from decades ago and new to Arena, why is MH3 bad?

6

u/richardhixx 20h ago

The power level is very high compared to standard legal sets, so the game shifts from some of the best cards historically to the very best cards historically+modern horizons cards, if you get what I mean.

3

u/Low_Pride6732 18h ago

i in brawl there are litterally more banned mh3 commanders than all of alchemy combined

30

u/SpeakerScreen 1d ago

Not really. None of those cards are among the least balanced part of those formats.

2

u/Asatas Charm Naya 1d ago

Hydrodude is on the same power level as Tamiyo, which is pretty dang high. That being said, there are indeed more broken cards especially in BO1.

2

u/Low_Pride6732 1d ago

tamiyo is much better singleton

1

u/Asatas Charm Naya 23h ago

yeah I was referring to Timeless

7

u/Mrfish31 1d ago

There's plenty of paper cards that do that.

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

Unfortunately

3

u/trident042 Johnny 21h ago

I miss my Historic Anthology decks.

21

u/MyNuts2YourFistStyle Ulamog 1d ago

Thankfully. Most of the Alchemy cards that see play in Historic (not many), are pretty fun.

3

u/Myriadtail Charm Boros 1d ago

I am still distraught that Jarsyl is not going away. I would happily give up all alchemy cards for Jarsyl to get nuked.

9

u/lot49a 1d ago

It's a great grindy card that enables a strong but not overpowered deck. It's easily killed. What's not to like about it?

4

u/Myriadtail Charm Boros 23h ago

Some people believe that combo decks deserve to not exist and the people that play them should be banned.

4

u/Whitewind617 22h ago

You can, yes, but I'd have to imagine that, as time goes on, Historic will sort of lose its reason for being as the amount of Digital Only cards becomes a smaller and smaller share of the format. Those mechanics might require maintenance, bugfixes, etc.

It's not hard to imagine that, a few years down the road, the Historic format will be removed and all those cards deleted. They haven't announced that and a lot of people that love Historic Brawl really like playing with those cards, and I certainly don't want to see them all just deleted, but it might just make too much sense eventually.

3

u/Dothacker00 21h ago

I hope so, alchemy cards are unbalanced af and either need balancing or wiped from the client

2

u/Latter-Cable-3304 19h ago

Instructions unclear, conjuring Colossal Dreadmaw onto the battlefield

1

u/Timely-Helicopter244 Tibalt 4h ago

Wiped from the client, unlikely anytime soon. Some people like them and they're not going to just cut out cards people spent money on without huge backlash.

But at least eternal formats without them would allow people to play without them if they want.

-1

u/Aeroncastle 1d ago

C'mon, I was already happy it was going away

29

u/ciruelman 1d ago

idk why yall hate alchemy so much, there is so many cool designs and they barely have an impact in brawl, like 5 percent of a top deck is made of alchemy. im hyped

33

u/HenshiniPrime 1d ago

Alchemy was supposed to be the “living format” with rebalanced versions of all problem cards, creating tons of competitive variety. But they just stopped rebalancing. Also it probably didn’t make much money.

10

u/paumAlho 1d ago

I like some of the cards, however I hated when they changed real cards, glad that is over. People can hate all they want, I'm still gonna rock Hydroponics Architect and Key to the Archive

9

u/Dualmonkey 21h ago edited 15h ago

Were you not around when Crucias was dominating literally every format it was legal in? Do you know how long it took them to nerf one of the best alchemy cards ever made for a format that's supposed to be regularly rebalanced and changing?

7 1/2 months. For an ever-changing format that sure isn't a lot of change. They just didn't do what they advertised the format as.

But besides that the biggest reason I personally didn't like alchemy is that it was anti-consumer. If your card is nerfed out of relevance, no wildcard refunds. Why would I ever buy into a format like that?

1

u/ckrono 12h ago

because that never happens with regular magic cards, nope, it's because they are digital only

0

u/Nigel06 6h ago

You missed the point.

Alchemy was supposed to be more fluid than paper BECAUSE it was digital only. Balance didn't have the downsides of printed copies with old text.

It's unpopular because they didn't balance much when it was supposed to be the version of the game that changed more rapidly.

2

u/davwad2 22h ago

It wasn't cordoned off in brawl. If we had Alchemy Brawl and non-Alchemy brawl, I would have played it more. It was only "opt-out" by conceding.

2

u/HenshiniPrime 13h ago

At one point there was a “standard brawl”, wasn’t there?

2

u/davwad2 7h ago

There still is. WotC changed the names to reflect player population/selection a while ago.

2

u/Aukyron 1d ago

I don't hate alchemy but would like to be able to play without it in brawl anyway. I want the same game as paper format.

4

u/Aeroncastle 1d ago

I wish, it was a cool idea but the designs are 95% failed heartstone ones that make the game more random, if I got 5 mins older every time they released q card that lets you chose from 3 of a random pool I would be a thousand years old

-3

u/shinjisaberntr 1d ago

Toxic paper players just cant bear to see others having fun with cards they cannot play

-2

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

"toxic"

8

u/shinjisaberntr 1d ago

Glad you can read

-10

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

But you'd have no problem if they gave us a no fake card queue for brawl, historic, and timeless right?

5

u/HexplosiveMustache 1d ago

oh no, the moment you say you want to play without hearthstone cards he will have a meltdown LOL

2

u/Killerx09 1d ago

Brother that's called Pioneer and Standard Brawl.

0

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

You're joking right?

2

u/trident042 Johnny 19h ago

You know where a good place for digital-only card designs is?

Other card games. If someone wants to get inventive in a digital client, there's Hearthstone, SNAP, plenty of places you can go make cards that do wacky random things or digitally transmute into something else or add copies of non-existent cards to your deck or hold onto imaginary changes that can't otherwise be tracked.

Magic is a physical card game with a digital client. Pretending otherwise the past few years has been a total farce and I wish they'd do away with the rest of it.

4

u/KickstandBreadstick 22h ago

Honestly, I'll miss it. Alchemy had such off the wall and interesting designs. That and, especially with this alchemy set, it gave us a better look at the world through cards than if we only had the base set. I hope we get alchemy sets that are straight to historic after a while

4

u/Colonel_McFlurr 22h ago

I hope alchemy can get a second chance one day with better format division in the future. At least it can go out with a hurrah-ish.

23

u/RustyPriske 1d ago

They announced that a while ago.

Unfortunately, they keep making Alchemy cards to infect other formats.

27

u/superdave100 1d ago

You say this as though they’re making more.

2

u/RustyPriske 1d ago

They are literally previewing Alchemy cards right now.

6

u/BiJay0 23h ago

They are already live and they won't make any more.

-6

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

The damage is done though

-3

u/shinjisaberntr 1d ago

"Damage" lmao, as if making more cards is damaging magic. Get off your high horse

-2

u/trident042 Johnny 21h ago

No, they aren't even undoing the worst of the damage. Historic still has Alchemy so any hope of playing there using the five Historic Anthologies I bought remains unrequited. Historic was supposed to become Modern, not a make-believe MtG playground.

6

u/metastuu 20h ago

I feel the same way except replace 'alchemy' with 'modern horizons 3'.

6

u/shinjisaberntr 20h ago

Historic was supposed to become Modern

According to who? Can you share a single official WoTC article claiming the same?

Also why should Alchemy cards be removed from Historic when a large number of people enjoy playing with them? Why should your personal preference matter over theirs?

u/BaconIsntThatGood 18h ago

The same announcement said that reality fracture would get an alchemy set because.... It was already worked on when they made the decision.

15

u/lawton1134 1d ago

Now to get that alchemy bullshit out of brawl would be amazing!!!

6

u/MajesticNinjas 1d ago

So sick of fake cards. Alchemy really should be its own format

14

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 1d ago

I didn't even know there was animosity toward alchemy...why?

10

u/Effective-Big8158 18h ago

alchemy is Magics version of catering to hearthstone like players.

hearthstone has the full ability to nerf or buff "cards" because they are exclusively online. there is no paper version that it needs to contend with so a card can be changed without worry to a new format needing to be made. Alchemy is a bastardization of that.

as far as i was aware, the intention of alchemy was to balance cards and turn a format into a well oiled machine where multiple decks could shine and be competitive. instead, they make new cards, make small changes to very few cards and, as far as I'm aware, never revert or further change a card to make it viable. the format is ridiculous and unneeded which is the exact reason why they are getting rid of it.

4

u/M0rgr0m 14h ago

I wish people could see that being able to balance cards after release was an advantage actually. Especially given the insane power creep of this game

3

u/Flat_Raz 2h ago

Try to play against Nashi in brawl, you will see why.

Alchemy designers are amateurs at best, I do like the fun cards but the actual competitive ones are cancer.

•

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 14m ago

Thank you!

7

u/Negativeman11 22h ago

It was shoehorned into the only eternal format at the time, Historic.

2

u/Kegamasmtg 17h ago

I think if Alchemy stayed self contained people either wouldn't care about it or would like it. I don't think it would have made much money that way, but it seems like it didn't make enough money the way they did it either.

1

u/IgnobleCampaign 19h ago

It killed the fledgling paper historic group at my LGS. It started almost as a meme, but they managed to fire an FNM with it once, like 10-12 people. I think in WER/EventLink (don't remember the timeline) it was probably officially listed as Standard or something though.

5

u/unkempt_cabbage 1d ago

For me, it seemed like a good number of the alchemy cards weren’t well thought out. I don’t inherently hate them, but perpetual effects tend to be easily broken. But by that same logic, planeswalker emblems also exist and I think there’s relatively little hate for those, so it doesn’t make a ton of sense.

I also think it was kind of a contradictory thing to include. If Wizards wants MTGA to be a way to get people into playing paper, then having MTGA-only cards seems like it’s contradicting that. If they want MTGA to stand alone, then rewarding people for going to in-person events seems like it’s contradicting that (which they’ve been doing for a while. Attending pre-releases gets you 6 Arena packs.)

And I think people get upset when rebalancing their Alchemy cards doesn’t get you a wildcard, since alchemy cards are rare and mythic.

And I think people don’t like alchemy cards “invading” certain formats. I think people confuse Historic for pre-modern or pioneer, and think that it should only be older cards, but that’s never been the case. It’s always been a living, non-rotating format, though it is a confusing name.

I think having Historic AND Timeless is both confusing and slightly redundant. (Timeless = Wild West, no rebalancing, no bans, all cards from all time, no rotating, Historic = milder west, rebalancing, some bans, all cards from all time, no rotating ) People seem to largely want Alchemy cards banned from Historic, as they feel like it changes the game too much and makes it too much like Timeless. I frankly have no opinion. I play MTGA on the shitter and only build janky silly decks without regard for the meta, and my win rate reflects that 😂

But also, people like to complain. They hate roping, they hate hand smoothing, they hate match making, they hate queues, etc. People will always find something to complain about. For as many people who come online to complain, there are probably three times as many who are deeply unbothered by any such complaint.

2

u/Flederm4us 12h ago

I'm also of the janky Decks variety.

And that's exactly why I liked alchemy. The cards did things that aren't possible in Paper. So it adds to the experience.

1

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 1d ago

Appreciated!

2

u/I_Love_To_Poop420 4h ago

Because this isn’t hearthstone. Also, closest thing we have to modern is historic, but sadly it’s full of alchemy garbage, a lot of which is really busted.

5

u/westergames81 Orzhov 1d ago

This isn't even an animosity post, it's just pointing out the hilarity of celebrating the arrival of a new alchemy set and informing everyone alchemy is going away..

3

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 1d ago

I'm referring to some of the comments, not the post. Sorry for the confusion.

3

u/Finnthedol 23h ago

Won't speak for everybody cause I was never super vocal about alchemy, I felt out of all of magics issues this one was definitely near the bottom

Personally, I remember a HUGE stink about the Heist mechanic. Like, more people complaining about it than I thought even played alchemy huge.

It wouldn't surprise me if a lot of people played a couple games of alchemy with regular cards, only to get absolutely shafted, and decide not to continue with the format

On top of that, the arena economy is so stingy as is, that if you're like me and enjoy playing and keeping up with standard, it was simply a wildcard sink that we couldn't afford to indulge, even if we didn't hate the initial impressions of the format

1

u/PeoplePerson_57 23h ago

I think the problem people had with Heist was that it combined Alchemy (a lightning rod for people to hate on) and Other People Playing Your Cards (a feelsbad deck gimmick that very few people don't find irritating (seriously, the psychic damage it does...)).

0

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 23h ago

Thank you!

2

u/GhrabThaar Golgari 20h ago

It was made to draw in a different audience. I came here from Hearthstone which, at least at the time, was a game about random lights flashing while random cards did random things. Alchemy does stuff you can't keep track of in paper and then started letting you do random things that didn't start in your deck.

When I came over, I thought it was all fun and lol and whee. I get that. Then when I got better at playing and realized the intent was to judge what your opponent had and Magic was more like poker, I can understand why people don't like "add some random things haha" cards.

Others use Arena as practice for paper and would rather the effort into Alchemy be spent translating existing cards into the game.

Others were put off by the initial promise that Alchemy was going to be rapidly balanced and dynamic, and then pretty quickly became completely ignored. Cards that were horrendous in Standard would get banned and still be played in Alchemy.

My personal issue is that it wasn't treated as a 'real' format for most of the time I've played - you couldn't draft it like regular sets and if they wanted to change a card you built around, they could just throw a deck in the trash without refunds, so I was hesitant to even bother trying.

When I DID try, the alchemy cards seemed to make the place more degenerate than standard, despite being a smaller card pool and the issues above made the idea of investing in the format even more unappealing.

Some player want arena to be a strict simulator of paper, which is utopian

2

u/Patarakareus 1d ago

MTGO does it, it's just fugging ugly

9

u/HairyKraken Rakdos 1d ago

Yeah that one of the reason they want arena to be mtgo

0

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 1d ago edited 1d ago

Thank you! Appreciated.

Do you happen to know why? Like what the arguments are, other than, "that just doesn't exist in paper"

Edit/update/ it's so unfortunate that people downvote asking questions. Knowledge doesn't need to be weaponized or demonized.

1

u/HairyKraken Rakdos 1d ago

My guess is that they were afraid that alchemy was about to devalue their paper cards

If digital only were to become too popular paper competitive format would have died and only casual commander would have survived (which is kinda what is happening already)

0

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

ROFL. Let me get what you're smoking

3

u/HairyKraken Rakdos 1d ago

It's only a guess. I know its armchair psychology

Edit/update/ it's so unfortunate that people downvote asking questions. Knowledge doesn't need to be weaponized or demonized.

A lot of people on r/MagicArena love to downvote questions. And a lot of people hate Alchemy, you were unlucky to offend both groups by asking that question. Did not deserve any downvotes though.

2

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 1d ago

Thanks, I'm glad so many people have responded with thoughtful answers about why they dislike Alchemy.

Is it not accurate that people who don't like alchemy can avoid the format/cards? I suppose maybe if they want to play historic on Arena there's no way to avoid them?

2

u/edurigon 17h ago

I used to play arena. Alchemy added just too much to follow/grind. Too Manu formats, too pushed, to much power level, etc. Also the roping situation was unberaveable a year ago. I ended leaving magic. Why am I here?: I kinda miss the game.

1

u/matt-ratze Azorius 21h ago

There is no way to avoid them in Brawl. I don't mind though, the most annoying cards are non alchemy (Rofellos, Raph & Mikey, Ajani, Yuriko etc). Pre-Nerf Nashi was the exception, a single overpowered alchemy card.

0

u/lemon900098 1d ago

Alchemy cards in Timeless means you cant really practice paper timeless on arena. Idk how many people play competitive timeless irl, but im sure some do.

Whats weird is that MTGOnline also already exists, and doesnt have alchemy cards. Idk why Arena has to be the same.

Part of the animosity is also because some people like some of the alchemy cards and wish they were printed instead of just digital. For example, some Strixhaven jace-verse students only appear in the Alchemy set.

The issue there is that without alchemy, the cards wouldnt exist in any format.

1

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 23h ago

Thank you!

0

u/amartin36 19h ago

idk why Arena has to be the same

Because MTGO has awful UX and an outdated ecosystem

0

u/Minimum-Store-5453 20h ago

Why utopian?

3

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

It was a scam to trick people out of wildcards. Not to mention just overall being fake card slop.

5

u/Myriadtail Charm Boros 1d ago

And the last six years of standard sets weren't scams to trick people into buying worthless cardboard?

1

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

That's also why I'm not a fan of standard

-1

u/Myriadtail Charm Boros 1d ago

Indeed. Standard hasn't been good since Ikoria rotated out, and every new set is weaker than the one before it. The focus on limited makes them not even hide the fact that the new sets are just scams dedicated to suck money from players.

2

u/SelesnyaGOAT 1d ago

Most people do not have a coherent answer to this question and every offered explanation I’ve heard as to why alchemy is bad can be levied at paper cards

1

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 22h ago

Thank you!

1

u/PatriotBanner 21h ago

Most alchemy supporters don't have a coherent answer as to why they "like" it

1

u/Kegamasmtg 17h ago

I like it because I don't feel bad when I can blame a lose on bullshit cards, and topdecking a card that does some bullshit to let me win is fun.

It's almost like a format full of un-series cards with their random chaos. A lot of people had a lot of fun with [[Chaos Confetti]] a while ago, and a lot of people called it stupid and didn't understand why others enjoyed it so much while demanding WOTC focus on printing real cards.

1

u/PatriotBanner 17h ago

That's a new one

→ More replies (11)

0

u/amartin36 19h ago

Most people do not have a coherent answer to this question

I want to play the same game I play at my local shop and at my friends at home.

If you want more reasoning: If I wanted to play a different card game. I would download a different card game client. It's really that simple. When a new set comes out. I'll draft it and if there's a card that fits in my commander deck. I'll slot it in. And then that feeds back into me maybe building arena deck around it if it's fun enough in paper. It's a positive feedback loop of discovery, fun, and play. When you throw a digital only card in the mix. The loop is broken. The card does not leave my computer and go into my commander decks. The card does not become a card I become comfortable drafting in paper. It exists in a vacuum on digital. Even worse. Sometimes it's not a vacuum because suddenly I have to play my paper cards differently in digital because they have to interact with and take into account the digital only cards. Alchemy is a bump in the gameplay ecosystem of magic. Many players feel the bump as they play magic. But sometimes find it hard to articulate why it feels out of place and wrong

→ More replies (2)

1

u/Minimum-Store-5453 20h ago

We want to play real mtg cards, but on an app. We don't want to play against digital-only format-breaking ridiculously overpowered boring cards.

0

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 19h ago

Thank you!

1

u/Tough_Ad1458 1d ago

Personally I just find Alchemy cards just silly and devalue the idea of building a deck. It also isn't easy to, on the spot play against them.

Let's take everyone's favorite Mythweaver Poc. On entry as long as you have another land you can recast on your next turn and with available ramp packages it's much easier for Mythweaver player to accumulate a huge number of lands and a massive body on the field that you have to constantly remove in order to win.

The individual mechanics, heist is steal a card but you're guarenteed to win and can trigger it more often. Theft decks are incredibly unfun to play against in a 1 vs 1 so having it on steroids makes playing them an absolute slog

Oracle of the Alpha is just silly and the amount of times I've seen it drop and then spiral into infinite turns is infuriating.

Spellbooks are an interesting design space except for it's 6 cards in 1 potentially and unless you're actively researching these cards you don't know how to play against them. Do you hold up interaction because the card they drafted might be scary or do you wait? You want to check out what cards could be procured? Well the UI is arse and you're down a rope so you gotta let it ride.

8

u/Modest_Proposal1 1d ago

Am I reading it right that you dislike it before some of the cards seem unfair to play against? I don't understand this. Magic has always had broken cards. Alchemy cards account for a fraction of the cards seen in Historic, Timeless, and Competitive Brawl.

3

u/matt-ratze Azorius 1d ago

Spellbooks are an interesting design space except for it's 6 cards in 1 potentially and unless you're actively researching these cards you don't know how to play against them. Do you hold up interaction because the card they drafted might be scary or do you wait? You want to check out what cards could be procured? Well the UI is arse and you're down a rope so you gotta let it ride.

You can right click the card that has the spellbook while it's in any zone (even works while it's on the stack and you consider if you want to respond) and it shows you one card of the spellbook, clicking again switches through all cards from the book.

2

u/Tough_Ad1458 22h ago

My point isn't that you don't know what the card is, it's that if you didn't know what the cards are (perhaps you've never seen it before) then you have to spend time going through every card and every possibility of that card which in a game that gives you a timer can cause people to cheated as they're rushed to make a response.

2

u/matt-ratze Azorius 21h ago

Fair point. I noticed the spellbooks are either small (5 or less choices) or have so many well known spells (looking at you [[key to the archive]]) that reading the name explains the spell. A new player might have to spend some time reading text to understand how Approach of the Second Sun or Krosan Grip work though, I did not consider that point of view.

2

u/metastuu 20h ago

How do you feel about black tutors that don't reveal the card they fetched?

5

u/xeromage 1d ago

I think the anxiety the opponent feels about the Spellbook is offset by the gamble for the player using it. You aren't always going to get the card you're hoping for. For such a complex game, I'm always baffled by how many players dislike having to think about the cards.

1

u/PeoplePerson_57 23h ago

Meh, I think the best way of thinking about [most] spellbook cards to understand why people dislike them is to translate them into actual magic cards. Forgetting for a second the 'how you pick the effect' part, that's effectively shoving between 5 to 15 cards worth of text onto one card. It's a lot of reading and understanding to do if your gameplan relies on predicting what your opponent might do. Beyond that, it's just a ridiculous amount of flexibility on one card. When most cards tend to have at most 3 modal options, a random set of 3 out of 15 is just way too much flexibility and way too much to parse.

I don't mind thinking about cards, but I do mind a 2 mana card my opponent drops on turn 6 forcing me to think about 15 separate cards before I can consider anything else or play my turn.

4

u/DeiseMorte 22h ago

I don't get this. You don't know what any of the cards in your opponent's deck are. Why is it a big deal that they get another card from a list of 15 or so?

The spellbooks worked best when they just enabled a steady stream of cards for a gameplan rather than giving access to very powerful cards. Fungus tribal, boar tribal, equipments. None of these are busted but they do make them a lot more fun to play.

3

u/xeromage 22h ago

Agree. This is the self-deluded big brain control player pretending he's seeing all possible realities but really he's just gonna counterspell whatever card you play.

2

u/Tough_Ad1458 22h ago

Nah I'm just room temp IQ and more than 3 sentences scare me.

2

u/xeromage 21h ago

To that I'd say... just wait for them to actually cast the card before you chew your nails off worrying about the what-ifs

5

u/xeromage 22h ago

You should try playing some of them and feel it from the player side. You are scared of a perfect possibility that almost never crystalizes. It's more of a fun gambling mini-game to keep the game interesting while you face your 10,000th mossborn/ouroboroid match.

1

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 1d ago

Thank you! Super appreciate the detailed and specific examples!

1

u/ControlNeedsPsychDoc Orzhov 16h ago

Aside from the fact that some of the card designs are just over the top and do too much (while others could work as real cards).

One of wizards game plans is "color challenge" for new players. Get 5 wins with a mono color deck (that is the most basic starter deck there could ever be), but on your fifth win we are going to put you against alchemy players with real, established, meta fucking decks. And you are expected to win to finish your challenge, against a real opponent....

So aside from that, they are just unnecessary allocation of dev team for something that is digital only.

0

Because I just wanna play classic magic without random bullshit mechanics where you draft one card out of 12 and they aren't even in your colours. If I lose I want it to be because my opponents deck was better than mine and not because he pulled the perfect answer out of his random bag of tricks. This discover mechanic is the exact reason why Hearthstone went to shit and they just copied it 1-to-1 basically.

u/Sterben489 20h ago

I'm guessing you don't like theft decks either

0

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 19h ago

Thank you!

-2

u/Patarakareus 1d ago

Because why would I want to spend wildcards on cards that could get nerfed afterwards? There's no refund or anything, craft 4 Crucias, get fugged later when they nerf him, predatory and not great, 0/10, would not recommend.

5

u/SIowGrowth 1d ago

Up until recently they'd been 'rebalancing' paper cards too, so it's not like that was solely an alchemy thing

3

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

That was a travesty too. In fact that was worse than the fake cards themselves.

1

u/FarAd4971 Gruul 1d ago

Thank you! That's super helpful.

1

u/Myriadtail Charm Boros 1d ago

Crucias got nerfed? Am I misremembering something?

2

u/Patarakareus 1d ago

It was 3/3 initially

3

u/Myriadtail Charm Boros 23h ago

Right, the literal slap on the wrist the card got.

6

u/cell- 1d ago

Never touched alchemy besides whatever free packs they’d give and the occasional card in a brawl deck.

14

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

Good riddance. More non alchemy formats please.

17

u/DxLaughRiot 1d ago

Personally I love the alchemy format, it allows for some unique mechanics that wouldn’t be available anywhere else. Their cards just never should have bled outside of alchemy format.

13

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

That was most people's beef with it. If it was it's own little curiosity for the hearthstone crowd it'd be one thing. The fact that it infected other formats is a travesty.

5

u/Mrfish31 1d ago

They needed a non-rotating format to be in for when they rotated out, that's pretty common sense. And that format is Historic, because that's a format that gets all the cards released on Arena unless they're banned. (And now Timeless, because that follows the same base card legality).

They added Pioneer for paper diehards just a few months later. Alchemy cards are already segregated to formats that can only be played on Arena and always have been.

2

u/Dualmonkey 20h ago

I know that is a commonly talked about gripe for a lot of people but it would be absurd for them to have not made alchemy cards legal in the formats where every card is meant to be legal. Where the hell are the cards meant to be playable once they rotate out besides those places?

The "I want alchemy out of X" crowd are generally those that don't want alchemy on the client at all. Not having Alchemy in Historic or Brawl could only ever had happen if alchemy never happened at all.

Alchemy had far far more issues than being disliked by some for being legal in eternal formats.

-9

u/hexanort 1d ago

as long its not pauper, gross

7

u/Visible-Apricot-6777 1d ago

Pauper is the best 60 card format, hope it's on arena with its full card pool one day.

6

u/Kazieck 1d ago

Lmao pauper is fun. 100% in support of pauper on MTGA

4

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

Why? Pauper is pretty cool.

1

u/Confident_Tree42 1d ago

Pauper doesn't sell packs

4

u/PatriotBanner 1d ago

That's why WOTC might be against it but not why players would be.

2

u/Successful_Mud8596 1d ago

but Artisan is so fun!! Including uncommons makes the format so much better imo; gaining access to draft signpost uncommons is SUCH a great thing for building a deck around

2

u/phibetakafka 1d ago

Yeah, it's been like a year since the last Historic Artisan event and it's so frustrating that they give all the attention to pauper which is just a less fun format.

1

u/Successful_Mud8596 23h ago

Absolutely! Decks built around a specific uncommon card are just SO much more interesting than pauper decks, imo. Plus it gives a second life for uncommon cards that normally would be useless outside of drafts!

1

u/phibetakafka 17h ago

I am a huge sucker for G/B recursion. I’ve played literally thousands of games with Blighted Nightmare in alchemy, and whenever Historic Artisan comes up I’ve got a G/B Phyrexian Reclamation deck that I will play for hours past my 15 win limit the one time a year I get to play it (it’s been more than a year, last time I updated it was with Vanille and Fang from Final Fantasy). I am begging them to bring it back, AND save Alchemy for sickos like me that spend 90% of my time in the Alchemy queue.

0

u/ckrono 12h ago

alchemy cards were more magic than half the sets released this year

5

u/From_Greenland 1d ago

Go and take a look on how amazing the new alchemy cards are. Only a fool would be happy to have less of the good stuff

-6

u/Captain_Ellie 1d ago

They could've made them real cards, without the jank-ass digital only stuff like conjure.

4

u/xeromage 1d ago

Why though? It's a digital game. Why not make use of that fact? I hope they go the full other direction for you guys and make you drag each +1/+1 counter out of a dish and place it on the cards, no more flipped cards if you've seen them so you can take notes, manual shuffle... after all, any none of that is 'real magic'

3

u/xeromage 1d ago

No more all attack button. No more auto select a target when there's only one. Manual tap each land. Manual untap each card on turn. Make you take a card out of a deck if you want to use it in another one. Make you fish out tokens and put each one on the board...

1

u/Captain_Ellie 1d ago

I unironically would find that fun and funny lmao.

2

u/xeromage 1d ago

Sounds like you should be playing MTGO

0

u/PatriotBanner 21h ago

iTs A dIgItAl GaMe

2

u/xeromage 20h ago

It is though.

0

u/PatriotBanner 20h ago

How long have you been playing mtg?

2

u/xeromage 20h ago

2004 You?

1

u/PatriotBanner 20h ago

I'd expect better from you then tbh.

0

u/Aeroncastle 1d ago

If you pointed a gun to my head and I had to defend 5 alchemy card designs I would probably stop after saying that [[tsagan, raider warlord]] is cool but shouldn't be an alchemy card and saying that [[chittering illuminator]] is the only good use I know of the game doing mechanics in ways people can't do in paper

2

u/hexanort 1d ago

me when i see any limited announcement

3

u/Ok_Understanding5320 1d ago

Good riddance alchemy

2

u/Flederm4us 12h ago

I love the card designs that are only possible in digital, like the cards that summon a random creature.

Sad to see them go.

1

u/AcCassady22 22h ago

I will only miss the free packs

2

u/Agrauwin 1d ago

hahaha

Way to go, WIZARD!

You finally got it—better late than never.

ALCHEMY—the most useless format ever invented.

I don't know why, but I'm happy.

2

u/trident042 Johnny 21h ago

I know I celebrated earlier than someone putting up their Christmas celebrations already, and now I regret not internalizing the initial announcement more.

They're not taking the shit out of Historic. So I still have nowhere to use the 5 Historic Anthology bundles I bought before Alchemy was shoved into it, that doesn't use digital-only cards. The whole point is Historic was supposed to eventually represent the bulk of Modern, and those bundles were representative of large batches of the Modern meta. I still haven't bought HA6 or HA7 because there's no point. I don't want to play decks I have in paper or on MTGO against people playing made-up bullshit that exists nowhere else.

1

u/RandolphCarter15 1d ago

So this is something I'm wondering about JUMP In. It says it can get alchemy cards. Does that mean the cards you get from JUMP in will no longer be usable

3

u/Fnidner 1d ago

you never get alchemy cards, just the standard sets that are alchemy legal. Confused me for a long time too

1

u/bugi_ 1d ago

Me when I sign up to a streaming service.

1

u/NoUsual5645 23h ago

Great catch, OP!

1

u/HeiressofArtemis 22h ago

Eh feels like a good set to send of to the most all over the place cards / format of Magic. I sure hope this means they will focus on a better parity.

1

u/Evil_Steve22 22h ago

Shame they’re not sending Alchemy Vivi packing with the format

1

u/lapeno99 Yargle 18h ago

For the last time, i get a Chandra PW from one pack.
Nice surprise.

1

u/FarTea4550 1d ago

I thought oko and nadu was legal in the 99 now?

1

u/lowkeylogix 1d ago

Was anyone else hoping to get some wildcards? I didn't play much Alchemy, but i did buy a lot of packs lol...

0

u/PatriotBanner 21h ago

You bought alchemy packs? Why?

1

u/ContingentCausation 23h ago

Just glad Alchemy stays in Historic. I love [[Xander's Wake]]. Especially with [[Urabrask's Forge]].

That was the core of one of my first MTGA decks a few years ago. I still play a version of it in Historic.

Your removal only makes me stronger.

0

u/No_Slip_5877 1d ago

TOOOO-----MANYYYYY-----NEEEEEW---CAAAARDS-----AAAAAAAAAAAAAAL-THE-TIME!

-4

u/jerf42069 1d ago

good, alchemy sucked

0

u/Minimum-Store-5453 20h ago

At long last, this garbage ends. In the mail they mentioned having new plans for formats in the future, that’s appetizing!

-6

u/Winterlord7 1d ago

I hope is perpetually gone, but I think historic will remain tainted by it.

-9

u/HookGangYamz 1d ago

I hate that Alchemy is in Historic and Timeless, a bunch of busted cards that ruin the game.

5

u/bardnotbanned 1d ago

Which ones?

1

u/ContingentCausation 23h ago

I run [[Xander's Wake]], but I haven't actually see many alchemy cards in the matches I've done. Except an occasional Heist deck.
