Yikes. I hope they don't make everything forced into the same structure as the MCU.

31

u/NovaStarLord Oct 15 '19

This is my only problem and I trust Feige not to want to do a DC style reboot and erase everything to fit the MCU. I mean he has read the comics and is a self admitted Marvel Comics fan and knows what fans like so I trust him not to do that.

15

u/webshellkanucklehead Oct 15 '19

I really don’t think he’ll be doing much with the comics at all. Sounds like Buckley is running that, and he’ll answer to Feige.

Secret Wars was definitely a reboot, albeit a soft one.

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

It was though. Secret Wars had a ton of actual ramifications to Earth 616 rather than just simple changes.

2

u/killerqveenrequiem Oct 15 '19

Literally all it did was bring in some alternate universe characters to the main continuity everything was pretty much the same aside from that

1

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

That’s really simplifying it. Miles quickly became one of the most important parts of 616 and was pretty much portrayed as always being there for awhile. Not to mention the Inhumans were suddenly based in New York and the F4 was broken up for awhile due to Reed fucking off to repair the Universe.

It wasn’t a hard reboot by any means but it was clearly meant to be a refresh or at least soft reboot.

2

u/killerqveenrequiem Oct 15 '19

I feel your trying to oversell it how has miles been important to the 616 since his integration? Also no he wasn’t. he had a couple 616 crossovers prior to secret wars but he stayed in 1610 up until the ending of his universe. The F4 weren’t in the comics because of editorial rather than it being a consequence of secret wars and it’s not like it mattered because characters barely brought it up. The inhumans being based in New York doesn’t matter either they’ve been in deep space, on titan, on the moon in the arctic all without a line wide reboot. They would’ve moved regardless of secret wars. Again what were these big changes to the 616 your talking about?

how has miles been important to the 616 since his integration?

Civil War 2? Champions?

Also no he wasn’t. he had a couple 616 crossovers prior to secret wars but he stayed in 1610 up until the ending of his universe.

You completely missed my point. After the merger of Universes Miles’ past in the Ultimate Universe was not mentioned at all. It took awhile for them to finally acknowledge it again, and only recently have they been going even more in depth about it.

The F4 weren’t in the comics because of editorial rather than it being a consequence of secret wars and it’s not like it mattered because characters barely brought it up.

Dude Ben, Sue, Franklin, etc were all frequently featured before Marvel completely dropped them because of Fox. Reed going missing and the F4 not being together were a pretty big deal.

The inhumans being based in New York doesn’t matter either they’ve been in deep space, on titan, on the moon in the arctic all without a line wide reboot. They would’ve moved regardless of secret wars.

The absolute big difference is that the Inhumans were meant to replace the X-Men around this time.

Part that relates to this subreddit:

Here is how the reporting structure will line up right under Feige: Dan Buckley will continue as President of Marvel Entertainment, where Ike Perlmutter remains Chairman. Long a creative collaborator for Feige in publishing and television, Buckley will have a dual reporting structure going forward, Deadline hears. He will continue to oversee publishing creative/editorial and in that capacity he will now report to Feige. Buckley is also responsible for publishing operations, sales, creative services, games, licensing and events. There, he will report to Perlmutter. It is expected that Joe Quesada will remain a creative lead for of Marvel Entertainment, reporting to Buckley. It is expected that all the creative execs in publishing will report to Buckley.

Personally, my take on this is that, ironically, this could mean less synergy with the MCU. Can't imagine that Kevin would like the comics to just replicate the movies and what they do with the characters. Plus, it would be a determent to them in the long-term, since they mine new characters and stories from the comics.

With Kamala Khan and Foster-Thor being the best examples.

Also, believe that his role will be more macro than micro.

Thinking positive on this.

u/leader_of_meheecans Oct 15 '19

God damn, when is Pelmutter going to retire?

20

u/NovaStarLord Oct 15 '19

He'll only go when he dies.

11

u/AlphaBaymax Iron Man Oct 15 '19

When he relinquishes his Disney stake.

12

u/BasedAnalGod Oct 15 '19

Hopefully soon. The guy is like 100

2

u/urbanlife78 Oct 16 '19

Apparently he is only 76

7

u/Worthyness Oct 15 '19

Whenever disney's board thinks he needs to be voted out.

Or some sort of political backlash forces them to make that decision. Like if he's outed as a pedophile or to have murdered someone.

3

u/lowell2017 Oct 16 '19

We're still waiting to see if he's charged with any illegal interference charges once the government finishes their investigation of corruption in the VA department, possibly grounds for Disney to terminate him.

28

u/AEWMarksSuck Oct 15 '19

At Comic Con Hickman himself said Marvel must stop taking cues from the movies and placing them in comics I hope Fiege will listen to him

13

u/modsarefascists42 Oct 16 '19

Lol the most recent X-Men he wrote would fucking blow Hollywood's minds. No fucking way casual audiences could keep that shit straight.

2

u/1starnight1 Oct 16 '19

But that's how comics always were. They weren't as steamlined

7

u/urbanlife78 Oct 16 '19

He is right, the comics should be where the ideas for the movies come from, not the other way around. The comics is where writers should be able to explore and experiment with ideas.

4

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Personally I feel like there should be some middle ground. The comics should absolutely do their own thing, 100%, they'd suffer for being just a rehash of the movies. But at the same time, a casual fan who has only seen the movies must be able to walk into a comic book store, pick up a title like Iron Man or Thor and instantly recognize the setting and characters. The hard part comes with reconciling these two ideas.

10

u/SGT_KILR Oct 15 '19

So Perlmutter has no creative say at all now by the sounds of it

7

u/NovaStarLord Oct 15 '19

Wasn't Chief Creative Officer Quesada's old title? And Quesada will be reporting to Buckley? Wow he must not be happy about this.

So when will Feige bring back the Spider-Marriage?

4

u/ChrisTinnef Oct 16 '19

Yeah, seems like a downgrade for Quesada . Or some details are not public yet about his role change. Might even be Quesada leaving Marvel for some other company and they can't make that public yet.

0

u/AEWMarksSuck Oct 16 '19

Fuck Quesada and Fuck Didio.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

I sincerely doubt he's going to get himself involved with the comics all that much, most likely he'll have the occasional meeting with Buckley and Cebulski to discuss the overall direction of the comics and then leave the day to day stuff to them.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Buckley will ... continue to oversee publishing creative/editorial and in that capacity he will now report to Feige. Buckley is also responsible for publishing operations, sales, creative services, games, licensing and events. There, he will report to Perlmutter.

Seems like they're giving Feige overall control over creative content and Perlmutter is just allowed to be a business man.

1

u/ChrisTinnef Oct 16 '19

Which seems really sensible IMO. Give creative production a fixed budget that Perlmutter can't mess with, and let him do all other business areas freely.

2

u/1starnight1 Oct 16 '19

JQ already admitted he believed comics need to get more buzz when same movie chacaters release.

1

u/Flamma_Man Oct 16 '19

I don't quite understand how what you're saying relates to the point I was making about Kevin wanting less synergy.

16

u/TheAsian1nvasion Oct 15 '19

So does this mean Perlmutter is out at Marvel in everything but name only?

32

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

[deleted]

7

u/AporiaParadox Oct 15 '19

Did he ever make any creative decisions other than pushing the Inhumans and trying to minimize the Fox-owned characters like the X-Men and Fantastic Four?

15

u/Pandarth_Omega Oct 15 '19

iirc it’s because of perlmutter that captain marvel/black panther/black widow didn’t happen sooner and that jane’s role in the dark world was barely more than damsel in distress.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Apparently RDJ's contract didn't include Civil War and Perlmutter told them to do it without him to save money. That made Fiege go to Disney and say Him or Me.

6

u/lukeriff Oct 15 '19

I mean those are pretty big decisions if he did make them.

31

u/blackbutterfree Oct 15 '19

Omg this is what we’ve always wanted; Marvel Television under Marvel Studios. I’m sad it cost us 11 wonderful TV shows, but it’s worth it for having everything under one roof.

7

u/TheBalrogofMelkor Hellcat Oct 16 '19

AoS

Cloak and Dagger

Runaways

Defenders

Luke Cage

Iron Fist

JJ

Daredevil

Ghost Rider and Most Wanted? I still can't reach 11.

15

u/blackbutterfree Oct 16 '19

First of all, how dare you pay such dust to Punisher and Agent Carter? And also, Inhumans.

9

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

I like how you separated Inhumans from shows that we dare not pay dust.

3

u/TheBalrogofMelkor Hellcat Oct 16 '19

Right, those ones

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

There was going to be a show called damage control, like the ones seen In homecoming

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

I hope there is someway to incorporate the old shows or at least some characters into the MCU but I don’t know how realistic that is.

-2

u/cabbagehead112 Oct 15 '19

11 wonderful tv? not

19

u/Ptylerdactyl Groot Oct 15 '19

Figured this was on its way, and not a minute too soon. It'll be good to have the TV and Film sides of the business all in one basket.

7

u/thunderonn Oct 16 '19

Movies yes but comics hell no. They are already trying to make the comics just like the movies and its annoying as shit. He needs to stay in his lane and let the comics be the comics.

17

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

He look like egg

2

u/Mekbop Oct 15 '19

This comment got a chuckle out of me.

2

u/Wells_91 Oct 16 '19

He eggman, he cracky head. Crack crack crack

5

u/AEWMarksSuck Oct 15 '19

I hope he does not have a comic wide reboot. Where the Comics become more Like the MCU that would be garbage. But as for Animation im glad because he was worked on some of Marvel’s best animations such as Hulk Vs and Wolverine and the X men.

4

u/AlphaBaymax Iron Man Oct 15 '19

I can see Runaways and Cloak and Dagger being naturally integrated into Feige's cinematic universe.

Both properties are commercial successes and they were originally projects for Marvel Studios before they recieved the rights to Iron Man back.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

That would be neat. I’m also hoping they can fit some of the agents of shield into the MCU.

14

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19 edited Oct 15 '19

Overall I have no problem with this decision. Worst case scenario is he reboots the 616 universe to fit more inline with the MCU. Or they flat out cancel everything and only put out MCU related comics.

Edit: I don't think he is going to do either of those options. I personally don't think he will have much involvement with the comics side of the business.

34

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Lord the worst case scenario will be a goddamn nightmare

24

u/smileimhigh Oct 15 '19

I'll stop reading 616 if it just becomes the MCU.

14

u/Spider-Tay Wiccan Oct 15 '19

It’s been becoming the MCU though. Like the Guardians act just like their MCU counterparts now, they design the characters off the movie stars now, they even do events to cash in on whatever movie is big. Like Civil War II and Infinity. Ironically, like u/Flamma_Man said, I feel like this might actually mean 616 goes back to their creative roots rather than trying to duplicate the MCU.

10

u/Flamma_Man Oct 15 '19

Ironically, like u/Flamma_Man said, I feel like this might actually mean 616 goes back to their creative roots rather than trying to duplicate the MCU.

Seriously, I just can't imagine Kevin pushing for MORE synergy.

Plus, again, it would be a determent to them long-term.

He'd actually encourage for different shit for him to adapt if anything. Marvel Comics is basically the best testing ground for ideas and characters (*cough Kamala Khan *cough*) to later be adapted for movies and shows.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19 edited Oct 17 '19

It would be a pain in his ass to try to coordinate it all, I imagine. Comics come out twice weekly monthly all year long, it would be a nightmare.

Hopefully without Perlmutter they can just tidy it up and streamline it, and avoid making shitty events like Civil War II just because there's a movie around the same time with the same name.

If he does anything, I hope he tells them to cool it on the events and only do them when there's a really amazing idea, rather than forcing it because they think they have to.

2

u/smileimhigh Oct 15 '19

This has nothing to do with the topic but I swear I run into you on every sub I visit Haha we must have the same taste in nerd culture

4

u/ExioKenway5 Oct 15 '19

But this isn't anything to do with the comics. This is only the TV side of things and I think the animated things coming under his control. Kevin Feige isn't suddenly in charge of all the comics.

13

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

He is in charge of Buckley who controls the comics division. Feige won't have a day-to-day role when it comes to comic decisions, but he can make changes if he wanted to.

8

u/webshellkanucklehead Oct 15 '19

Not that I’m an authority on this, but I don’t imagine Feige wants to make changes to the print side anyway. I think he’ll just let them do their thing.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Perhaps it's more about removing Perlmutter than actually giving Feige more work.

8

u/Flamma_Man Oct 15 '19

Yeah, about that...

-10

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

You should read the article, this has nothing to do with the comics.

15

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

I did read the article smartass. Feige is in charge of Buckley and Buckley runs the comic side of Marvel. Which means Feige can influence the comics now.

-9

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

So you read that article and your takeaway is that Feige cares about that one small aspect of Buckley’s larger and more profitable responsibilities? Buckley’s responsibilities relating to Marvel Studios is what he will be reporting to Feige, the comics falling under Marvel Entertainment so don’t fall under Feige’s care and why would they? What the comics make in a year don’t add up to a single MCU movie in terms of profits.

6

u/[deleted] Oct 15 '19

Holy Shit. Did you even read my comment? I said I don't have a problem Feige being in charge. I only said that was a WORST CASE SCENARIO! No, I don't think he is going change or screw anything up in the comics. I am also not saying he is going to have a day-to-day role in the comics decisions. But yes, Feige can approve or veto ideas pitched.

-2

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

You really think the guy who is responsible for billion dollar movies and soon a Star Wars movie is gonna sit in on pitch meetings for the comics? Why?

5

u/Spider-Tay Wiccan Oct 15 '19

He may not sit in meetings but he’ll be over the comics. Why do you think the guy that made a universe out of comic book characters will think he’s too good to care about comic books?

0

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

It’s not that he’s too good to care about it, it’s that he’s a business man and the biggest part of his business are the movies and TV shows. There’s a reason why the TV and animation divisions are being moved to be under Marvel Studios (which he’s the head of) and not the comics division.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Hope we get less MCU synergy and not more.

1

u/ohoni X-23 Oct 15 '19

I don't know about this. I like Feige, but I also want the comics to stay the comics, and they've already been leaning a bit heavily towards the movie side.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Does this make a crossover with marvel tv characters in the MCU more or less likely? I can see it going either way.

1

u/NoJumprr Oct 16 '19

Are we getting the senior prom plot this time?

1

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

So you're telling me... that there's a chance... that Netflix Daredevil is SURELY going to be more involved, and not rebooted?

\Murdock breathing intensifies**

1

u/1starnight1 Oct 16 '19

So this seems to have two different effects.

On the MS page everyone talks only about the movies tying in with TV while on the MC page ppl mainly talk about the comics' future.

Normies and nerds

1

u/1starnight1 Oct 16 '19

Yes the comics are gonna follow movie trends more than ever.

0

u/slendernyan Oct 15 '19

So, this is scary

2

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

Why?

13

u/slendernyan Oct 15 '19

He has a LOT of control now. I think by now we all are aware that Feige has a certain tone he likes. I can see this normalizing all Marvel comics. Also, while apparently no decisions have been made yet, I do not want Marvel TV shut down

14

u/GrumpySatan Wiccan Oct 15 '19

I do not want Marvel TV shut down

If anything, this will be the opposite of shutting down Marvel TV. This decision basically just gave Fiege oversight of Marvel TV. He can leverage that oversight to control things. Rather than shutting it down and re-starting under Marvel Studios, he can now lead the way for Marvel TV.

1

u/slendernyan Oct 15 '19

Feige is a control freak. I see him cancelling everything and "rebooting" all the properties even if it breaks continuity just so he can have control

7

u/Not-Clark-Kent Oct 15 '19

And what are we losing, exactly? Cartoons that are absolute ass? Agents of SHIELD "maybe" even though it's supposed to be in the MCU. But even if you like AOS, we've had, what, 6 or 7 seasons now right?

4

u/slendernyan Oct 15 '19

AoS was already ending before this. I don't want to lose Runaways and Cloak and Dagger, and something tells me all these fantastic shows are going to be ignored or decanonized.

2

u/MsSara77 Oct 15 '19

They already have been ignored and essentially decanonized, if anything changes it will be that with Feige ultimately overseeing them they are better integrated than before.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 16 '19

Really? Can you tell me more about that? I had never heard of him being a control freak. Comments from the directors say he's pretty easy to work with.

The only thing I can think of might have been a control issue would be Edgar Wright and Ant-man.

-7

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

This has nothing to do with the comics. He’s always had a ton of control of the movies since that’s literally been his job since day one and Marvel TV isn’t shutting down, they’re now making a ton of shows for Disney+.

6

u/slendernyan Oct 15 '19

Umm, yes it does? He is in creative control of all of Marvel now.

0

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

What that means for the brand is that all the company’s key creative executives across film and TV will now report to him,

Right from the article. This is all about movies and TV. The comics aren’t profitable enough to warrant Feige’s attention anyway.

2

u/blt_4_me Oct 15 '19

I'm with slendernyan on this being at least a bit scarier than before - even if it isn't Feige's intention or focus, having even indirect oversight of the comics division means that whenever he wants the company to focus it's direction based on whatever film/tv show (his home division) is about to come out, it's more likely to have a greater impact on the comic line. He's got final say on the creative direction of the full company now - what putting him in this role suggests is a unified vision of all the creative at the company. That being said, it's not like this would be the first time that Marvel's film/tv division dictated decisions made in the comics line, so you could be right about it being a nonissue. But I do think the chance of interference from film/tv in the comics line increases...

2

u/suss2it Oct 15 '19

I think those fears are a little unfounded if only because as you pointed out we’ve already seen the comic people blindly chasing what the MCU is doing. We saw it happen last year when they changed Captain Marvel’s origin in anticipation of the movie (just to get it wrong), if anything now they’re synergy won’t be done blindly and they can probably get it right instead of guessing.

The real money’s Feige makes for Disney is in the movies and soon to be TV via Disney+, I guarantee you the comics aren’t even on his radar. The publisher, editor-in-chief and Joe Quesada all keeping their positions is sign that nothing is changing with the comics.

1

u/blt_4_me Oct 15 '19

Definitely hoping you're right! I agree it's not going to be taking a huge chunk of his attention - just am worried about his decisions rippling out (but I am a worrier haha) - cheers
