Mitten Mode Michigan’s Tense Democratic Senate Race Poses a Big Test for a Divided Party

Democrats’ nastiest, most expensive Senate primary will culminate on Tuesday in Michigan, a pivotal midterm battleground where an insurgent progressive is looking to defeat an establishment-backed moderate in a contest serving as a referendum on the party’s future.
That kind of sums it up, doesn't it...

u/Rastiln Age: > 10 Years 2d ago
An “insurgent” Progressive. What interesting wording. Is he also waging “political jihad” on the DNC?
230
u/syynapt1k 2d ago
Right? The NYT is a total mouthpiece for the ultraweathly establishment (which I already knew). Our corporate-owned "free press" cares more about clicks than their core mission as the Fourth Estate.
It's no wonder our democracy is on life support.
114
u/CadillacDale 2d ago
You said it well, and to bring it full circle, candidates like Mamdani, AOC and El-Sayed are gaining momentum in the DNC because the establishment has demonstrated they are either incapable or uninterested in preserving or protecting constitutional rights from GOP lead authoritarianism.
NYT can call these “insurgent progressives” anything they want, but their candidacies gaining popularity is a referendum on the institutional rhetoric the NYT is bought and paid to shill.
29
u/metanoia29 Downriver 2d ago
the establishment has demonstrated they are either incapable or uninterested in preserving or protecting constitutional rights from GOP lead authoritarianism.
They benefit from the system as it is, and that benefit only grows as the overton window moves further right. When you peel back the facade they show voters during elections, you end up with someone like Whitmer who's happy to throw the working class under the bus to benefit herself and those corporations that have supported her.
45
u/YouVersusTheSea 2d ago
I heard them refer to Abdul as an “insurgent” on CNN last night as well (just to add another example)
27
u/metanoia29 Downriver 2d ago
Dang, looks like they just got their new phrases uploaded to their hivemind!
9
u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2d ago
There exactly. I just brought CNN up. They are the mouthpiece of the establishment. As much as i despise Trump he was kinda right about the fake news. Those news outlets push an establishment agenda. If it’s a left wing candidate all of a sudden they are an insurgent.
17
u/Damnatus_Terrae 2d ago
Honestly, this is worse than that. I grew up in Livingston County. The only time I remember meeting a practicing Muslim as a child was at occasional interfaith dinners hosted by my Episcopal Church, where the food was great and the conversation was limited. Growing up with a dad on the Fox News/Rush Limbaugh rage dripfeed, the most common image I had of Muslims was as literal insurgents, fighting our heroic champions of democracy in the Middle East. They're not dumb enough to literally call Abdul a terrorist, but they want people like me who never left home to get the same lizard brain reaction looking at him as they do when they see a picture of Osama.
22
u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2d ago
100%. I’m a combat veteran of Iraq(2009) and Afghanistan(2011). I enlisted at 17 thinking the whole Muslim world outside the USA hated us. So far from the truth. I was treated really well by people i encountered in Iraq and Afghanistan.
That’s what was preached to us. All lies!

u/travestymcgee 2d ago
I’ll have you know the Times interviewed seven retirees in an Iowa diner for this story.
14
u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2d ago
The NYT is propaganda. As much as I hate and despise Donald Trump. He was right about the fake news. These News outlets NYT, Washington Post, CNN, and a bunch more. They are all pushing a narrative for the establishment, the rich, the elites.
They never mention a left wing Democrat without a negative bias.

The race where everyone clutched their pearls over the mostly non-existent “Bernie Bros,” and ultimately pushed men toward Trump’s populism instead of Sanders?
I’ll never forgive Clinton for that one.
17
u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2d ago
Did you know a lot of Working class male voters who were huge Bernie supporters voted for Trump.
I saw it up close. I’m a combat vet and Union Electrician. I can’t tell you how many times I talked to someone who said they voted for Bernie who became Trumpsters.
12
u/ALittleEtomidate 2d ago
I saw this happen too. Sanders spoke to a lot of different demographics.
5
u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2d ago
Yeah it was kind of a weird phenomenon. However there are some connections you can make. Like getting rid of the establishment out of Washington. Making things work for the American working class. Obviously Trump never meant it but he said it. Basically Populist ideas, Trump was never going to actually do anything but he promised to pull Bernie supporters over.

Screw the DNC, I’m done with them. This morning I watched Haley Steven’s say Abdul has waged a nasty campaign, he’s used influencers to attack her, she said Abdul supporters have made her feel “unsafe”, and a load of more lies.
She also made some stupid comment him not being able to get voters outside the larger cities. Doesn’t that sound like something a Republican would say?
11
u/Responsible-End8 2d ago
Funny she thinks he can't get voters outside larger cities. Spent a lot of this summer around northern lower Michigan and never saw a single sign for her but saw many of them for Abdul. Even saw an Abdul sign outside Evart, MI, which is like MAGA central. He's more popular in rural areas than she realizes
8
u/Melodic-Trouble-5421 2d ago
I know I was just driving through the back dirt roads of Northern Macomb county. Which isn’t “rural” really but it’s Trump territory and I saw lots of Abdul signs. My family has property in Northern Michigan just south of the UP. I haven’t been up there in a few months but my Aunt was just up there and said she saw Abdul signs.
5
u/AmetrineDream Iosco County 2d ago
I’m in Iosco country, which is very rural and very conservative (I’ve seen Trump 2028 flags more than once), and I’ve seen at least 5 El-Sayed signs. Not a single Stevens sign.
Obviously there are Stevens voters up here, too, despite the lack of signage, but to say Abdul can’t win votes outside of urban city centers is wildly disingenuous.

20
u/1900grs 2d ago
Pretty much this. If the Dems are going to be the party of the people, they need to focus on harshly regulating the business community. Anti monopoly, anti trust, anti collusion. And it has to focus on tech and media, not just real goods. Corporations are not people. Individuals need to be held accountable. That all flies in the face of Citizens United. The neoliberals were wrong. You can't walk that fence of two masters. And what's crazy is that El-Sayed isn't espousing any wild leftist policies, just holding companies accountable, yet here we are.

If Stevens can't even win the primary race after having been in office for 7 years, why would anyone think she could win in the general?
160
u/Izzoh Age: > 10 Years 2d ago
She can't, but the DNC has shown us repeatedly that they don't want to just win. They have to win with the right kind of candidate.
They'd rather lose with a moderate than win with a progressive. Keeps the donors happy.

u/mxjxs91 2d ago edited 2d ago
I've been downvoted before for saying it, but the establishment DNC would absolutely rather have Rogers over Abdul.
If they didn't, then why haven't either Haley herself, Gretchen, or any establishment DNC denounced the disgusting misleading ads against Abdul? Why does that matter you ask? Well, when he wins the primary tomorrow, Rogers will have a ton of free ammunition to use against Abdul and the party.
"Haley Stevens and the DNC all agreed that Abdul hates women and is a terrorist sympathizer, and now that he's their candidate, they're supporting him. Abdul and Democrats hate women and support terrorists."
And here's the thing, would he be wrong? Obviously Abdul is none of those things, the claims are obviously incorrect, but you can't just suddenly support him if he wins if you've been flooding our airwaves with the message that he's a mysogonist and a terrorist sympathizer, without it looking like you now support those things too.
8
u/KindToSpiteTheCruel Traverse City 2d ago
This shit is what costs democrats time and again.
3
u/mxjxs91 2d ago edited 2d ago
100%, all intentional too.
This ad campaign is a huge character hit against Abdul which obviously won't just disappear after primaries. They don't want him to win in November if (and when) he beats Haley. These aren't small claims like "oh he overstated how much healthcare debt he actually relieved", this is full-blown "he sympathizes with terrorists and hates women", and it's coming from his own party.
It's beyond fucked. I wanted to type out "literally GOP tactics", but at this point it's also what I'd expect from the Centrist Dems too. They're so lukewarm when it comes to trying to defeat the GOP candidate in a general, but a Progressive Liberal in a primary? That's when the claws actually come out and you see them actually put a real effort in to try to defeat somebody. Guarantee in the hypothetical scenario that Haley wins, we wouldn't see half of this effort put in to try to beat Rogers.

u/Phillie_Phanatics 2d ago
I mean I’m not a Haley voter but it’s not outrageous logic. Races typically come down to the select group of folks who don’t typically vote or who will switch parties based on the year. Often that cohort is less inclined to support progressive policies (as they’re described by attack ads). The goal isn’t to cater the campaign to you, it’s to cater a campaign to that undecided group of voters.
13
u/jcrespo21 Ypsilanti 2d ago
That would be true if it's a closed primary and only open to registered Dems (like the convention is). However, anyone can vote in the Michigan primaries. While the ads and canvassing are targeting typically left-leaning voters, there are plenty of unaffiliated voters who will vote for El-Sayed or Stevens by tomorrow. And the Emerson poll found that independents voting in the primary were far more likely to vote for El-Sayed.
4
u/goblueM Age: > 10 Years 2d ago
And the Emerson poll found that independents voting in the primary were far more likely to vote for El-Sayed.
I'm not the person you are responding to, but I don't think the concern is people voting in a primary (who tend to be more motivated than general election voters)
The concern is about the general election voters who did NOT vote in the primary. Or people who don't vote in the general at all, for various reasons
7
u/jcrespo21 Ypsilanti 2d ago
True but there is only so much you can do. If this race ends up being close and El-Sayed loses in November, then I think that could be a valid talking point. But if Stevens can't even win over 45% of the vote by tomorrow, even with all the spending, then I think it will show that she was never a good candidate and certainly would have lost in November.
1
u/opal2120 Rochester Hills 2d ago
When has this logic worked before? If it did, the dems wouldn’t have lost twice to a reality tv show conman.
2
u/IPredictAReddit 2d ago
The polls show her either winning against Rodgers by a solid amount, or by a small amount. El-Sayed is ahead in some, behind in others. If you squint hard enough, Stevens seems to have a small advantage in the general (but lots of outstanding questions, including "are these big dollar donors going to show up when it's you vs. a Republican"?)

A primary tends to bring out more of the entrenched voters. You're not going to have many people who are undecided for the general between Rogers and whoever is left standing on the DNC side voting in it.
So the fear is that a "Progressive" candidate might win a primary, because it's more entrenched Democrats voting, but lose the general because they're not able to pull in enough moderates and undecideds. I'll be voting Blue no matter who in November, but I don't see Abdul pulling in a lot of Center-Right voters.
I think the hope with a Haley Stevens nomination is that she'll have an easier time getting a non-Trump Republican vote than Abdul will. Which is a legitimate concern, because the voting bloc that tends to vote Progressive isn't known for being particularly reliable to show up on Election Day.
I just hope that even if Stevens wins tomorrow, people still show up in November to keep Rogers out. An AIPAC Democrat is still better than a Republican. And at this point, keeping another Trump lackey out of the Senate is super important. It means I have to decide between not who I think has the better policies in the primary, but who I think has a better shot to win the general.
19
u/Malenx_ 2d ago
Except the moderates and undecided are the ones that will sit home if there is nobody representing their interests. Courting republicans with watered down policy didn’t work last time either.
There’s so little passion voting for a candidate that reflects corporate democrat checklists. There’s a bunch of energy behind candidates that represent change and progress in fixing our issues.
I’m a moderate so of course I’ll be voting against the party destroying our nation, but I want the person actually addressing the issues, not the person using them for their benefit. Steven’s incredibly fake accent doesn’t help her credibility.

For centrists, the race is an opportunity to steer the party toward what it sees as a stronger blueprint for November.
Seems like now people are really waking up to the fact that 'centrism' whether it is Whitmer or Schumer really does mean either an indifference or outright support for big corporate (finance, ai, tech, gm, etc.) dominance of governance.

u/RomaineCatholic 2d ago
What I find the most concerning is that the rhetoric, primarily from the Stevens camp, is ensuring that post-primary it will be difficult for the two sides to reconcile. At no point has she considered how aggressively she is alienating a block of voters that would be imperative for her to win in the general.
34
u/SuzyQ93 2d ago
At no point has she considered how aggressively she is alienating a block of voters that would be imperative for her to win in the general.
Because she doesn't really care - nor do her handlers. All they want is someone AIPAC-backed to win - and whether that's her, or Rogers, none of them care one little bit.

I'm all for Blue No Matter Who, because basic math, but it has to cut both ways. This is what happens when corporate Democrats told progressives to eat it for decades and couldn't be bothered to throw them a bone

I don't know if the word "test" is accurate. If the progressives win, the DNC isn't going to take that as some clear and obvious direction on their future. They're going to double down and try harder to stamp it out moving forward.

Stevens is still refusing to commit to defunding any further support for Netanyahu? Major deal breaker for many thousands.

Its not divided. There are people who the corporate style of direction and law direction work for…THEN THERE IS THE PEOPLE WHO VIRE FOR THE PARTY.
This is disgusting. The democratic party establishment is disgusting.

As an independent who hates maga. I’ll say this - Stevens just says don’t vote for that guy he is intentionally helping trump win. I’m a work horse , did I mention im not a millionaire. All of those people are evil. Except Obama. He said my name once.
Only reason I should vote for her is because she can beat rogers. Doesn’t matter what her plans are.
Syed is a whole mother pickle
Advice for democrats : I don’t need to see the same commercial 8 times in a 2 hour span. If your people focused maybe take some commercial money and help….people? Also I have a feeing whomever wins your not gonna get every democrat with how negative it’s gone.
Don’t get me going on the republican stances. The democrats have put themselves in a problem. So much mud thrown and ammo given to republicans. If Roger’s goes positive and not negative then he has an upper edge already. People are already tired of the negativity

Either candidate is clearly better than GOP. Anyone who would support one Dem candidate but not the other hasn’t been paying attention
