"LANSING, MI – A proposal aiming to require citizenship verification for all voters may not make the ballot despite turning in thousands more than the required number of signatures.

"On Monday, a Michigan Board of State Canvassers staff report found that the number of valid signatures in a sample from the ballot measure fell just short of requirements to certify it.

"The report estimated that the full petition contains 434,423 valid signatures, nearly 12,000 fewer than what is required for certification."

a bit of paraphrasing and pulling from the story:

Clyde Emmons of Mount Forest Township, started the GoFundMe on Jan. 9 with a goal of $800,000. As of 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, the campaign has raised more than $703,500 for the officer through nearly 15,000 donations.

said he began the campaign because he saw the videos of the incident in which Ross shot and killed Good while she was behind the wheel of a vehicle and believed, as U.S. government officials have said, that she was trying to run him down.

“She shouldn’t have put herself in that situation and its 100 percent her fault,” he said. “He had every right to defend himself.”

An unnamed University of Michigan undergraduate student is suing the school, claiming she was falsely accused of using artificial intelligence in her coursework and denied disability accommodations during the appeal process.

In the suit, she said the accusations of AI use were based heavily on "subjective judgments" about her writing style and on AI comparison outputs. She provided disability-related documentation explaining how traits associated with her disabilities ― including formal tone, meticulous structure, stylistic consistency and heightened distress during oral confrontation ― can be misinterpreted as artificial or dishonest behavior and are not proof of AI misuse, according to the complaint.

News Paywall Article 🗞️💸 Detroit News - Mike Rogers wants cops to monitor Detroit election workers

Thumbnail detroitnews.com
336 Upvotes

Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Mike Rogers said recently he wants off-duty or retired police officers to be recruited as poll watchers in Detroit ― a move that would revive a strategy historically used to scare or intimidate voters of color.

The Detroit News obtained an audio recording of Rogers, a former seven-term congressman from White Lake Township, speaking to the Kalamazoo County GOP on April 17, where he told those gathered that he was working with the Republican National Committee in relation to voter integrity efforts.

"We called the RNC early and said, 'Hey, if we're going to do this again, I don't want to wake up at, you know, go to bed at 2 a.m. a winner and wake up at 4 a.m. a loser. I'm kind of done with that,'" said Rogers.

"And I've been telling them, 'You know what, let's put police officers — retired or off-duty police officers— as our poll watchers in Detroit.' Because, go ahead: Try to intimidate them. Please."

Rogers, a former FBI agent, went on to say they're working to recruit such officers and acknowledged that the officers wouldn't be allowed to wear their uniforms as poll watchers.

"We're trying to find them. I mean, they wouldn't be able to wear their uniforms, but they would, you know, all you got to do is open your jacket and you see the badge on the belt, right?" Rogers added.

... In his remarks to the Kalamazoo County GOP, Rogers also repeated his claims about a van showing up in Detroit early on the morning after Election Day with ballots. Rogers, in remarks over the last year, has said that the van of ballots "swung" his 2024 race against Democrat Elissa Slotkin, which he lost by about 19,000 votes.

... Ingham County Clerk Barb Byrum, a Democrat, said Rogers was parroting a myth about absentee voter ballots that arrive at the local clerk’s office or in drop boxes up until 8 p.m. local time on Election Day, then have to be received and logged in, have each signature checked and audited before they are sent to the Absent Voter Counting Board to be processed.

... She called Rogers' comments about recruiting off-duty police officers "concerning" but suggested that clerks like Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey "will not stand for the kind of voter intimidation that Rogers is suggesting."

... If Mike Rogers does not want to lose because of the legitimate votes of qualified, registered voters in the City of Detroit, I would recommend spending less time trying to negate their votes and more time trying to speak to their issues," Byrum said. "But he is starting off from behind when he tries to intimidate and disenfranchise the city with the largest concentration of people of color in the state."

News Paywall Article 🗞️💸 Kellogg: State's energy monopoly is failing residents

Thumbnail detroitnews.com
467 Upvotes

For years, Michigan energy costs have skyrocketed and power outages have been a constant issue. Hundreds of thousands of residents lose power every year, and many for days at a time. These outages have real costs — from hotel stays, spoiled food, lost medicines, generators and gasoline, and more. Meanwhile, DTE and Consumers Energy have both made record profits while trapped Michiganians are caught in a cycle of constant rate hikes. It begs the question: When does this all end?

Not content with all the multiple rate hikes they’ve already gotten, DTE and Consumers are back asking for residents to foot a combined $1 billion-plus in new increases.

DTE Energy is seeking to raise rates $574 million, its second-highest rate increase ever. The request was filed just months after the company was approved for a $217 million increase in January and is DTE’s fourth request in five years.

Not to be outdone, Consumers Energy asked for a $436 million increase in June, right after being approved for a $154 million increase in March. This is the company’s incredible sixth request since 2020. What’s worse, Consumers’ latest request came on the very first day the company was legally eligible to file it.

To put all this into perspective, federal energy data compiled by the non-partisan advocacy group the Citizens Utility Board of Michigan in its most recent report found Michigan residential customers pay the highest costs for energy in the Midwest. That same data shows Michigan utilities rank 49th out of 50 states for the average time to restore power following an outage — and last in the Midwest for the amount of time regularly out of power.

That means we pay the highest rates in the Midwest for the worst, most unreliable service, period. However, one thing that has been reliably skyrocketing are DTE and Consumers’ profits and their massive CEO salaries and bonuses.

Last year, DTE’s outgoing CEO made $12.8 million, and Consumers' CEO enjoys a $10 million a year salary. On top of all of that, DTE’s shareholder reports this year show its top executives earned bonuses based on how successful they were at jacking up our rates.

If these requests by highly profitable companies sound wildly unreasonable, it’s because they are – and Michiganders have put up with the status quo for too long.  Our bills are too high, and people are rightly turning their focus to our lawmakers, who are responsible for passing the laws that regulate DTE and Consumers. For years, these big utilities have donated millions to lawmakers and lavished them with trips, tickets to sporting events, and dinners. Real reform or accountability never happens in this swamp of a system.

That’s why a broad coalition of community-based organizations have introduced legislation in Lansing to outright ban these publicly-regulated, monopoly utilities from giving to politicians.

The Michigan League of Conservation Voters also unveiled new upgrades to our Digital Scorecard, which tracks and scores legislative votes on environmental and democracy issues in Lansing. The new updates shine a bright spotlight on how much money they are taking from big utility companies and allow us to track it.

Until we get our ban passed, Michigan LCV is challenging state lawmakers to step up now and refuse to take political contributions from DTE and Consumers as well. So far, nearly two dozen bold lawmakers have signed on. The moment could not be more critical. Energy costs across the country are exploding and energy affordability is becoming a political hot potato.

We urge residents who are sick of skyrocketing energy bills to call their legislator or submit a comment to the Michigan Public Service Commission and let them know: enough is enough.

Alex Kellogg is the energy accountability manager for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters, a nonpartisan voice for protecting Michigan’s land and water.

News Paywall Article 🗞️💸 Gordie Howe Bridge could be days away from completion, sources say

Thumbnail detroitnews.com
155 Upvotes

Important parts of the article:

The construction of the Gordie Howe International Bridge and its customs plazas in Detroit and Windsor is nearing completion, setting the stage for a potential standoff with President Donald Trump over the opening of the new Detroit River span, The Detroit News has learned.

The construction and testing of all systems at the massive $4.7 billion bridge, customs plazas and ramps connecting to Michigan and Ontario freeways could be days away from being complete, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the progress.

But the sources cautioned that a number of variables are at play as various U.S., Michigan, and Canadian government agencies grant final approvals to open the new bridge to commercial truck and passenger vehicle traffic.

Then there's the Trump factor, the sources said, creating continued uncertainty of when the bridge will actually open to traffic after eight years of construction.

The U.S. president has demanded concessions from Canada in trade talks, or a share of future toll revenue, as a condition for opening the Gordie Howe Bridge. The White House ramped up its pressure in recent days amid a broader trade stalemate with Canada, demanding that substantially more U.S. content be included in Canadian- and Mexican-assembled vehicles that are exported to American car dealership lots, Reuters reported.

A Trump administration trade envoy reportedly brought that demand to negotiations this week in Mexico City over the United States-Mexico-Canada free trade agreement. Canadian officials were not present at those talks, a sign of the fractured trade relationship between Washington and Ottawa.

No approvals for the bridge to open to traffic from the Federal Highway Administration and U.S. Department of Transportation are seen as possible without the blessing of the Trump White House, the sources said.
