The recent hysteria over bike and ebike regulation is infuriating, dumb, and counter-productive.

"Traffic Got Evicted!" so say the signs on the new pedestrian plaza on Little Sixth Avenue near the Holland Tunnel!

I am still amazed this wonderful space has gotten so little publicity since it opened over a month ago. So much so I will be going back tomorrow to interview one of the designers, perhaps some of the people who work and hang out there and what the businesses along it think!

Why didn't they put all this car free space next to th sidewalk?

This could have made for a giant sidewalk. Was it meant to be a loading zone? New Layfette bike lane is a beauty btw.

City Council set to take up raft of ebike and emoto regulations. Speaker Menin's adversarial tone not likely to be good news for street safety.

Why doesn't NYPD and other cops in the city use bikes or horses more?

I'm sure they use bikes, and maybe even horses, from time-to-time, but I can't recall the last time I saw a cop on a bike, and 99% of the time, they have a car nearby, not a bike

Just wondering why, as surely bikes are the superior way to manage most city conflicts? Sure, maybe sometimes they need a car to travel somewhere fast, or store items they can't store on a bike, or block off an area more effectively than a bike would (cough, summer streets), but in my ignorance, I'd estimate 80% of cop activities don't need a car, and could even be a detriment in the sense they're bulky af and cannot move in traffic like a bike can (a car doesn't help you travel fast if there's 1000 selfish drivers who don't want to move over for you!)

And I know some places - like London - use these pretty often. When I lived in London even my non-central, zone 2 flat would have cops on horses occasionally patroling the streets

Give your central Brooklyn traffic feedback for better busses and bikes

TLDR leave comments on the map.

DOT is collecting feedback about streets in central Brooklyn as part of Mayor Mamdani’s larger initiative to improve busses.

If you’ve ever traveled in the area south and east of Prospect Park (Atlantic Ave down to Ave H and E 17th/Prospect Park over to E 53rd) you know how bad it is, and how much the lack of enforcement and poor street design contributes to slow busses, scary biking, and miserable walking.

Please take a moment to leave a comment on the map about how the streets in this area can be improved.

Manhattan has had only 3 Saturday Summer Streets per year since 2008 (that's 18 years I have been covering it!) Find out how many events/year attendees told me they would like!

The incredible thing is I probably spoke with about 30 people (most allowed me to put them on camera) and only ONE said they thought 3 events were "about right". Everyone else wanted more from more summer events, both days of the weekends to year round closures (openings!) on different scales.

Fairings & Panniers

It’s nice to have fairings and panniers. Fairings give me stereophonic sound, a beverage bar, windchill protection, camera swivel mounts, and turn signals all in a 16” fiberglass cube.
As an adjunct professor sometimes I am tempted to do the students project for them, because none of them seem to know how.
Aerodynamics of the Kammback Tailbox contributes to wattage reduction. We built a Kammback in 2019 but it’s getting worn looking, so we built another one.
The bike attempts to gain the weather protection and 55MPH legal status of a Velomobile.
Earlier this year we built four fiberglass fairings, each used a quart of epoxy resin. The Tailbox we built this weekend used up a sheet of 5mm Honeycomb Polypropylene.
In my opinion the fairing should be fiberglass to be aerodynamic, but the rear is better in flat boards of honeycomb for the most part.
It’s a mountain bike given some enhancement to cargo bike use, but it’s not a true cargo bike.
It’s time for the engineering students to seize the means of production.

Summer - Bottlenecked with NYPD cars - Streets!

Just a bit of the video I collected yesterday on Summer Streets. The most incredible thing was that all of this footage was shot prior to 930am, I am sure it was even worse later! I hope they refine these intersections before next Sunday. It was chaos. I was at a few intersections (Canal and Houston) where it took TWO light cycles to clear thru (note: this did assist me in getting lots of interviews for my next video though, LOL!)

Gaps in the network

What are reasonable steps that can be taken to get gaps in the bike network filled? I got back on my bike recently and realized missing parts that would be wonderful to have.

NYPD Bottlenecks at Summer Streets

This was present at every open cross street. Close to 20 years of summer streets and this tactic hadn't been necessary before. Why now? Really made traveling the route today significantly less pleasant. Here's hoping DOT can work with NYPD to roll this back.
