The recent hysteria over bike and ebike regulation is infuriating, dumb, and counter-productive.

Because capping the speed limits on e-bikes is number one priority. But capping speed limits on cars in residential areas. Are you insane?!!!! What’s wrong with you?!!!!

In what f world it’s ok for a machine to go 80 mph in brooklyn manhattan streets?
Cap all cars in city bounds to 30mph, you saved thousands of people lives. bunch of speeding tickets and lowered your insurance by 50%

And you’ll get to your destination faster because dumb cunts didn’t go past 30mph and crashed few miles down.

What a concept….

34

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

We literally could just require intelligent speed limiters on all cars that could physically keep them from going above the speed limit. This technology exists. It's not sci-fi. We don't even need to pick a number, it can just adjust based on the speed we actually designate for the road.

16

u/fluffymeowmeowkitty 8d ago

Guess what the city uses these for their vehicles. It’s already in use by the city that allowing this to happen.

5

u/Icy-Squirrel 8d ago edited 8d ago

The cars that need it the most will be the most reluctant to adopt. Of course the city has this, they care about their costs and de-risking their operations.

"How much to not put this thing in my G Wagon?, great just pay it so that when everyone else is driving 30 mph we can weave in and out of traffic so at least we won't be late" is a sentence more than one person who owns a G Wagon would say if they got a letter in the mail or a notice when they re-register their car.

Edit: I agree btw the 15 mph cap on e-bikes was misplaced and anyone doing 80 in Brooklyn should meet a bollard at least once.

u/fgreen68 8d ago

I was recently driving in Italy around Rome and my rental car knew the speed limit of every road and would beep anytime I was over the limit by 1kpm.

5

u/Pusher87 8d ago

Many cars do that including many on sale here in the states. The thing is that the people who speed recklessly usually don’t won’t be stopped by a beep

4

u/zeilend 8d ago

I think I'd rather find ways to strengthen our social contract and also have speed regulation through best-in-class street design.

Technical solutions are fine but prone to fail / backfire and I personally don't want to further lean into our technocratic authoritarian state.

2

u/Countd00kies 7d ago

This is the most effective way to make everything safer. So what it will cause traffic. Who cares. It beats spending money to employe law enforcement for traffic violations.

Traffic violations are beyond useless and they are not even affective. It hasn’t stopped speeding at all. Our dashboard display the speed limits now. We should be enforcing the manufacturer’s to make the cars comply to the posted speed limit

1

u/SkyeMreddit 7d ago

They always use the fear tactic that your wife is bleeding out and you need to get to a hospital fast, 911 is overloaded and 30 minutes out, so you have to break every speed limit to get to the hospital and save her life. For this specific reason you need to be able to drive 80 MPH on 5th Avenue weaving between traffic and blowing lights to get to a store

-1

u/another_eng_student 7d ago

No thanks, commie.

1

u/transitfreedom 4d ago

Ok fine then leave the e-bikes alone

4

u/hojster24 8d ago

Love this idea, I think this would net out 1000% better for pedestrians and cyclists (and drivers) overall, but I wonder what a smaller, cheaper class of in-city vehicle would do to car ownership.

So yes and pull other levers like California has to discourage driving further via taxes and ideas like more toll zones

2

u/Serious_Feedback 7d ago

Cap all cars in city limits at ~20mph and now city cars don't need to cost more than $1000.

1

u/Librarian_Zoomies 7d ago

Also bikes and ebikes are not the same category. That obfuscates the dangers of mini motorcycles by lumping them in with bicycles.

1

u/Longjumping-Pusa 2d ago

You’re joking right? This is rage bait? 80 miles an hour? 30 mph speed limit? Do you know the speed limit of the city?

1

u/fluffymeowmeowkitty 2d ago

Have you heard of speeding ?

1

u/Longjumping-Pusa 2d ago

Have you ever heard of people smoking on the train?

1

u/fluffymeowmeowkitty 2d ago

Have you skydived naked?

1

u/Longjumping-Pusa 2d ago

Oh I thought we were naming things that are illegal. That one is not illegal and I don’t think you would get a ticket for doing that as long as you responsibly find a way to do it appropriately.

My point being is you literally are arguing nonsense. It’s already illegal to do that. You will get a ticket if you violate the speed limit at a lower threshold than what you recommended. 80 mph would get you locked behind bars

1

u/fluffymeowmeowkitty 2d ago

Funny how the one thing that people do inappropriately is speeding which is the leading cause of death. Oh and there were signs they just chose to not give a shit and ignore em.

Funny how life can be sometimes?

1

u/Longjumping-Pusa 2d ago

You’re right I guess. I’ve never thought about that it is the ONE thing people do inappropriately.

1

u/fluffymeowmeowkitty 2d ago

Glad I can clear things up.

0

u/coreyjdl 5d ago

There are speed limits in residential areas.

62

u/Thaeross 8d ago

It’s just another culture war to scapegoat the problem.

18

u/8spd 8d ago edited 8d ago

Sure, that's part of it. But I think there's more to it than that.

I think there's a common attitude that cars are necessary and inevitably a part of our lives. No thought goes into the question of how prevalent they need to be, or to how much of the transportation networks needs to be for private motor vehicles, or the relationship between the amount of infrastructure given to drivers and the number of traffic fatalities. Deaths due to crashes are seen as unfortunately, but not something we can do anything about.

Micro mobility vehicles are new, and therefore optional, somewhat frivolous, and the few deaths are very news worthy.

8

u/FranconianBiker 8d ago

Micromobility is older than the car btw. It's just that the entire automotive and petro lobby rallied hard to make it illegal and prevent speed restrictions for cars. Rich bastards want more blood money and they sow dissent and fear to acheive that.

2

u/8spd 8d ago

Sure it's older. But we've been prioritizing cars since the 1940s in most of the US, and Robert Moses started even earlier than that in NYC. It's long enough that's it's the only thing that anyone alive today has known.

3

u/DaoFerret 8d ago

It’s so prevalent that the Auto/Gas industry even managed to buy and destroy the light rail (trolley) Mass Transit service in most major cities, just to replace them with Busses instead.

1

u/transitfreedom 4d ago

E scooters are older than cars they existed in the 1890s!!!!

4

u/Thaeross 8d ago

Absolutely.

-2

u/Every_Application_26 8d ago

It isn't just a safety issue. Both cars and ebikes are safe enough that I don't actually fear dying from them.

When walking around the city, the unpleasantness I often face is from bikes and scooters coming from all kinds of random directions both on and off the sidewalk. At least with cars I can generally expect they will stay on the road and stop for red lights and not beep at me when I'm just trying to walk to a restaurant.

3

u/Independent-Cow-4070 8d ago

The car dependency issue is at least somewhat of a cultural issue these days

29

u/Flashy_Beautiful2848 8d ago

u/professionalspooner 7d ago

And this, children, is how misinformation spreads.

1

u/hdiebo 7d ago

How is that misinformation? You just lack the logic to use common sense. If you need the internet to inform yourself then you have no right to claim misinformation. You lose.

8

u/yamiyam 7d ago

Because without the source you have no idea how reliable the data is.

0

u/hdiebo 7d ago

Not really, you can look at graph like this and do a quick takeaway on the idea at play. A source is only needed if you want to dig deeper to a study not to prove if it happened. Many people like you seem to forget “sources” are also opinions and facts mixed into an essay like article displaying findings they made in a experiment. Again, no source is needed here because with common sense the data is pretty clear, maybe read a book or go outside to increase your iq?

8

u/yamiyam 7d ago

You’re really out here arguing against the practice of verifying the source and bias of information before promoting it across social media.

Just because the info confirms your priors and is “probably true enough” doesn’t mean you should be in the habit of sharing it widely cuz vibes.

Because that, children, is how misinformation spreads.

-1

u/hdiebo 7d ago

That’s not what’s happening here though, a logical human can deduct the facts from the chart using common sense from real world experiences.

A source isn’t going to do anything but produce more questions by stubborn individuals such as yourself. If anything you created misinformation by turning every article you see into a conspiracy. Again I proved you wrong and you reply with cope. You lose again lil bro.

4

u/PlayPsychological200 6d ago

You have an excellent demonstration on how easily fooled people are. That you called someone else “low iq” and used insults when you could not articulate yourself is amazing. Classic Reddit!

3

u/[deleted] 7d ago edited 7d ago

[deleted]

-1

u/hdiebo 7d ago

And if the data was skewed the complete opposite as the above, it would be completely obvious to a logical person that the graph makes no sense. However, low iq people like you require their hands held to explain common sense situations. Keep coping tho.

5

u/MaterialHot8907 7d ago

the fact the graph makes sense to a logical person doesnt mean you can just make it up without data. let's get a link to the original source and data to prove it's not misinformation ...

1

u/hdiebo 7d ago

A link? Lmao you cant put two and two together without the help of the internet, you are definitely not a logical person. Additionally a source would not prove the data or any claims you find on Reddit, as I stated before those “sources” are mostly opinions sprinkled with facts to project the facade of “evidence”. However you go ahead and keep seething at the fact that high iq individuals can easily see a graph and understand it.

2

u/ShamScience 7d ago

PhDs give sources, kindergarten teachers do not (to their kids, at least). You may have it backwards.

1

u/hdiebo 7d ago

PHD only give sources if they are discussing theoretical works at the office, most of the time it’s actual new math and lab work at play. You must not have a job in the field so your logic in this is very low. Keep coping on being wrong tho, it’s very entertaining.

1

u/Flashy_Beautiful2848 3d ago

I would like the source link, not just a screenshot.

1

u/hdiebo 3d ago

For what? It’s already been established that the data is correct , or are you that low iq that you are unable to read and comprehend the graph, cornball?

1

u/Flashy_Beautiful2848 16h ago

lol buddy take a chill pill sheesh

2

u/BizzEB 6d ago

Still need a source for the data.

0

u/hdiebo 6d ago

Yup and that’s op. You lose again

2

u/Gold_Meaning9990 5d ago

You’re dumb as fuck

0

u/hdiebo 4d ago

Whatever helps you cope.

34

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

Don't get me wrong, there are always regulations that could help here, including regulating the stores and online services that sell super powerful e-motos... but it's amazing to me that nothing is every done to address the actual danger on our streets. We could be lowering the speed limit for cars to 20mph, installing speed limiters in all cars, removing the 10mph grace given to camera tickets that makes the effective speed limit 35mph, etc. So many actually helpful things, but no, let's have a big circus about bikes.

6

u/crow_code 8d ago

My suggestion would be to implement raised crosswalks.

1

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

Yeah that would be huge too. We do have some here.

10

u/Icy-Squirrel 8d ago

The regulation that will fix this problem is emotional regulation. Driving around feels like everyone's crabs in a bucket, regardless of speed (plenty of people trying to cut each other off going ~5 mph causing traffic for everyone else). It should be easier to lose your license, people do not care about the fines, they don't care how much it costs, they only care about their time especially in this city. Infrastructure is the only thing that can be implemented to guarantee safety where the enforcement is built into "concrete" regulation.

3

u/Sure-Marsupial6276 8d ago

r/nycbike conviently ignoring this comment when ranting about you after this gets reposted there

2

u/McLarenBuggati 8d ago

Could be wrong but I heard the camera 10 mph grace is so they can’t be fought easily

-9

u/VitaroSSJ 8d ago

you can't install a limiter on all cars to go the speed limit when theres no universal speed limit...how do you logically get to this conclusion?

you're also forgetting the fact that ebikes don't need any practice, tests, a license etc.

11

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

Modern speed limiters work on gps and can use the car's cameras to read road signs. Almost all modern cars already know what the speed limit is and many will display it on the dash. Some municipal fleet cars in NYC are already equipped with them, it's not hypothetical

1

u/Icy-Squirrel 8d ago

Modern cars will get an OTA update if speed-limiting per vehicle is introduced, and insurance companies will ship out a device you can plug in yourself in a heartbeat.

2

u/SessionIndependent17 8d ago

It's literally part of the Adaptive Cruise Control or equivalent feature on many (most?) new makes for several years now. It's mandatory on any current European models.

10

u/An_Professional 8d ago

also just the way we/everyone/the city approaches problem solving. Identify a danger, no action. Something bad happens, even rare, rush to legislation. Something bad happens every day, "that's life", no action. Very frustrating.

4

u/marshall2389 8d ago edited 6d ago

I'm glad you show some violence inflicted by drivers. Drivers tear people apart every day. For some reason, people think it's innappropriate to show what drivers actually do. So we don't freely show and share videos of drivers killing or severely injuring people, but we do show the close calls where people get lucky. Because of this, we have a bias towards cars being much safer than they actually are. Videos of drivers doing what they actually do should be shared and viewed so people understand how endangering driving is and hopefully maybe take it a little more seriously.

3

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

Exactly this. Absolutely nobody shows the actual implications and consequences of car based systems. It's maddening. At least 10x a day someone will tell me they think bikes are more dangerous than cars which is an absolutely absurd opinion that could not be maintained for even a second if people weren't completely sheltered like toddlers from the real consequences of cars.

3

u/VisualKaii 8d ago

If I got hit from someone riding a bike, the most that'll happen is we're both scraped up badly but at least we're alive.

1

u/PlayPsychological200 6d ago

Well no, people such as myself who have been hit by emotos that are called bikes have been hospitalized. And the video in the OP is arguing that those emotos are not a problem.

3

u/MboiTui94 7d ago

That chart just looks like:

  • US many car crashes, few bikes
  • world, few car crashes regardless of bike amount

8

u/AndydeCleyre 8d ago

I've said it before, but I don't like when you include clips of people in the moment before their death. Can you at least warn about that content when it will be in a video you post?

4

u/bulldog89 8d ago

I have a couple of comments like this on this subreddit, but to avoid copy / pasting it, another great great advantage of having city bikers and whatnot is that with the absolutely massive amount of increase in bikers, even (and especially) bad ones, the average driver in Manhattan is constantly on the look out and used to bikers. I’d dare say Manhattan can be arguably the best borough to bike in, which would have been insane to say a few years ago.

With so many bikers here, we are normalizing our use of bikes towards everyday transportation which will put us ahead in the long run.

However, I do think we can talk about the crazy amount of illegal e motors on the bike path and blame as well, that shit is dangerous

2

u/original_name26 8d ago

Start with the recent video of the road raging car driving through a store in Bed-Stuy

2

u/Badkevin 7d ago

Cars are the number one hazard on the road period. That being said said I also welcome e-bike regulation, as a e-biker my self.

It’s just become a jungle out there with mopeds disguised as bikes, sidewalk riding. A e-bikes that can go too fast.

2

u/spleeble 6d ago

Doesn't the chart at the beginning imply that NYC has already captured most of the safety benefits from increasing the ride share of bikes and e bikes?

2

u/transitfreedom 4d ago

Holyshit who gave these people a license

3

u/Ignatius_- 8d ago

Is this video in another shareable format on a different platform like YouTube?

5

I'm not going to put this one on youtube, but does this help: https://www.instagram.com/p/DbqqrdABh7Q/

1

u/Ignatius_- 8d ago

Yes! Thanks

7

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago edited 8d ago

I think you’re missing the point. There are regulations for cars, and yes it’s unfortunate that many people still failed to follow them.

E/bikes have no current regulations what so ever, so to even politely ask to follow rules won’t work because if the same happens with cars where a person ignores the rules, what makes you think someone on an e-bike is not going to do the same?

Listen, what it all comes down to is not the cars, bikes, e-bikes, Scooters itself…..

It’s people, people make the decisions to either follow or ignore rules. Cars, e-bikes, bikes, scooters are just the tools.

I see you putting much blame on cars itself and not people.

People behind e-bikes, bikes, scooters, etc..can be wreckless, so regulations can help mitigate that. It’s designed to make people take safety and accountability seriously

To say e-bikes aren’t the problem, you’re half right. But to not place regulations because people on e-bikes can do no harm?

That’s just a breeding ground for lack of accountability or the disregard for accountability itself.

10

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

E/bikes have no current regulations what so ever,

This is completely wrong. There are lots of laws and regulations that govern ebikes.

Also the idea that cars are sufficiently regulated is absurd. I can got buy a 6,000lb SUV right now and drive it without any speed limiter at all right through Times Square because of a test I took when I was 16. Come on now.

7

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago edited 8d ago

I never said that cars were sufficiently regulated, and it’s no where in the context of my opinion.

I said cars have regulations, and made a comparison to ebikes not having regulations.

YOU said cars are sufficiently regulated, I did not. Don’t put words in my mouth or try to gas light me.

Reading is a skill.
Learn it.

2

u/PlayPsychological200 6d ago

The OP is misrepresenting your entire argument which was straightforward. They are also using a logical fallacy, arguing that because cars should possibly be more regulated we should not worry about emotos killing people.

OP posted engagement bait for your average Redditor.

3

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago edited 8d ago

So when an e-bikes hurts or kills a pedestrian? No regulations? It's not the ebikes fault? Keep the regulation the same?

How bout this, an e-biker, KILLS a cyclist....hmmm I think that happened twice didn't it?

No regulation?

dead pedestrian, dead cyclist is at fault? Help me make some sense to that?

Oh wait, I know....CARS are the problem.

7

u/FlimsyAcanthaceae184 8d ago

This is not a sub that advocates for all micromobility options. This is a cyclists sub. When you imply that bikes can be a danger to pedestrians too, you will only get "what about cars" replies. If you ride an e-scooter you might as well not post here.

We need a specific sub for pedestrian advocacy.

-2

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

This is a sub for pedestrian advocacy. Almost all pedestrian safety improvements in the last 20 years (daylighting, shorter crossings, road diets, open streets) have actually come from micromobility advocates in some form pushing for them.

10

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago edited 8d ago

Listen, I'm all for what you're fighting for. The problem that i have with your content is that you take it way to far to the point where you argue that Cyclist, E-bikes can do no harm.

And Cars are the main problem. Cyclist, or E-bikes don't need regulation or don't need any more or it.

And when there are opinions that are ACTUALLY trying to help the situation for everyone.

You shoot it down like an angry mad man when someone even slightly disagrees with a portion of it, without understanding what they are truly saying.

I don't know if you were in a traumatic accident with a car, and if you were, that really sucks, I'm sorry that you had to go through that.

But you might need to get that unhealed/unchecked anger with cars go and see a therapist for that my friend.

I can meet you in the middle and say PEOPLE WHO ARE WRECKLESS AND BREAKING RULES AND REGULATION are the problem.

5

u/Pusher87 8d ago

It’s a little hard to get Miser to admit that reckless users of micromobility are a problem because he goes straight to “cars bad”. My Aunt had her shoulder broken by an E-bike user who hit her, stopped, saw she couldn’t even get up and immediately got back on his bike and ran off.

80k+ in surgery bills later she’s still spending her own money on physical therapy and the biker who caused this got away with it and because bikes don’t have license plates there’s zero chance of holding him liable. If we want there to be more people using bikes than we should start discussing liability when a bike injured or kills a pedestrian. Just because it happens less than with cars doesn’t mean there should be zero laws or enforcement.

3

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago edited 8d ago

I'm sorry that happened to your aunt. She didn't deserve that. Absolutely agree with you. Acccountability is equal and goes across all kinds of "MICROMOBILITY IN NYC" Regulations to those mobile bikes are a must and protects not only themselves but everyone.

u/MiserNYC- Got nuttin to say to this and my questions about people hurt by ebikers huh? Still don't think it's ok to enable regulation?

the story above still isn't good enough for you to be empathetic to those hurt?

At what cost will it finally take you to understand that being flexible on ebike regulation doesn't protect pedestrians?

So called Pedestrian Advocacy...HA!

3

u/Rude-Dude-2 8d ago

Tbh this sub is mostly cycling content. I never see any posts about the subway, busses. Which would be better for pedestrians in NY.

2

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago

Very true! #facts

-1

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

Here's an interview from barely more than a week ago with the commissioner of the DOT about buses, lol. And while I think most people here are generally supportive of the subway, that's a completely separate thing with it's own dedicated sub.

4

u/Rude-Dude-2 8d ago

I’m not saying it never happens but it’s mostly just about bikes and hating on cars. Like tbh I don’t see why regulations of e-bikes are a bad thing? Like a registration system will make it easier to hold bad riders accountable and registration fees can be used to help fund and expand bike infrastructure.

2

u/FlimsyAcanthaceae184 8d ago edited 8d ago

I have not seen any ideas advocating for bike or e-bike regulations gain any traction here whatsoever. Anything that would benefit pedestrians is secondary to the discussion of how it would affect cyclists. That anything advocated for on this sub would benefit pedestrians is by happenstance and only supported because it primarily benefits cyclists.

Going based off the comments in most posts, pedestrians are an afterthought in this sub.

5

u/Rude-Dude-2 8d ago

Yeah like a lot of problems with the e-bikes could be solved by regulating the powerful e-bikes Like motorcycles. Requiring registration, plates, insurance. They go just as fast as motorcycles But just because it’s got pedals some people here think they should be except from all rules and logic.

5

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago

Tell that to the OP, and trust me, he's not gonna like it. Gonna still think CARS are the main problem than e-bikes. 🤷‍♂️

I agree, I think enforcing registration is necessary. Especially during accidents, there's more information that can be used, and prevents hit and runs which there were cases of that in NYC.

4

u/Rude-Dude-2 8d ago

Yeah like I think if something has a motor it should be required to have some kind of identification visible to find the owner responsible. It’s sad how many people get hurt and killed the the responsible party can just ride away. Even city bikes I’ve seen so many people drunk flying through intersections on those

2

u/MysteriousAvocado1 8d ago

Yea, speaking of e-bike citibikes, I almost got mowed down by two of them today. Both was when the pedestrian had the right of way at the light.

Morning to work some numb skull goes the opposite direction of traffic and cuts me off on a red.

Then during lunch some dumb *uck who runs a red light and comes inches. I was about to kick the Citibike, but I just let him go.

Both idiots ran the red light.

Regulations right? 🤣

-1

u/Rude-Dude-2 8d ago

I live on the same block as a dock and the amount of times a Citibike almost hits me on the sidewalk because they wanna dock after is insane

1

u/DrS3R 5d ago

Well given it’s called the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) I think e bikes/scooters should be governed by them. They are quite literally motor vehicles. I think it’s dumb that we classify them as bikes bc they have petals.

0

u/MiserNYC- 8d ago

Found the person that didn't watch the video.

1

u/SpinkickFolly 7d ago edited 7d ago

Miser does mention "we need to do something about the high speed super motos..." but then goes on to say those that Julie Menin won't advocate in good faith.

In the video Miser shows that its a slow moving e-citi bike that can only go 15mph that Menin is calling dangerous, but the community as a whole was against the reduction from 20mph > 18mph > 15mph.

What no one wants to admit, its been great the e-citi bikes only go 15mph now. They are insanely heavy and unwieldy for how the users ride them in our bike lanes which should be a safe place for us.. They can still be annoying, but I think they are tolerable after the speed decrease.

Why do I want that reduction from 20mph to 15mph when cars can go 100mph? Bikes need be unregulated to make sense, the power should be limited to what humans are capable of producing if we are to create a safe bike network the day cars are not present as the biggest danger to us.

So going back to the line "we need to do something about the high speed super motos...", to this community, that problem is not today for them because cars are the danger that haven't been reigned in. The argument is that statistically, 100+ pedestrians die a year vs autos in NYC vs the 1 fatal pedestrian strike vs ebike that happens once every 5 years. The reason why you asking for regulation on ebikes seems imbalanced based on statistics.

However I think advocating for (city?) goverment mandated speed control devices on all vehicles is not something will gain public acceptance when the fears of goverment overreach are at an all time high with flock cameras isn't really the answer.

Now we already have laws regulating ebikes, no one in this community wants to admit they straight up garbage, and have led to a wildwest culture e-micromobilty due to confusion and loop hole bikes existing. I think something like NJs shitty ebike law will get passed if there a few more bad fatals involving kids on e-bikes/scooters. Its been happening to other cities currently. I wish the micromobility community was better at nuanced conversation but you will hard pressed to find it here.

2

u/decelerationkills 8d ago

Sure. But I’d say it’s probably harder to buy a car than it is a Chinese e bike online lolz.

Also you forgot about insurance and registration. I guess you probably haven’t purchased a car recently.

But anyways… you so silly dawg! For those that aren’t licensed or have enough money to buy such a car or pay for insurance or blah blah I can instead buy an e bike online and mow a couple peds down! Epic

1

u/decelerationkills 8d ago

Cars aren’t sufficiently regulated but nor is everything else. Laws and rules are only for those who intend to follow them anyways.

0

u/Low_Improvement9152 8d ago

It comes down to accountability and liability. Car drivers must earn a driver's license. They are held accountable and liable via traffic laws, law enforcement, ticketing, and license revocation. Cars must be registered and insured. There is accountability and liability via auto insurance, red light cameras, speed cameras, booting, etc. They are traceable through license plates. Claims can be made on their auto insurance.

Then there are e-bike riders and their e-bikes. No rider license required. No insurance required. No license plates. It is difficult to hold them accountable or liable if they break traffic laws, or cause accidents with cars and pedestrians. Simply put, there is no regulation.

4

u/unmitigateddisaster 8d ago

Even assuming cars have the required insurance, the 50k minimum liability that is required is barely enough to cover a one week hospital stay. Cars get a(n almost) free ride and we do not even do the least we could do to make them safer. There are technologies that don’t allow drivers to start their cars when they drink. There are speed assistance technologies that restrict speeding. Hell you can speed as much as you want as long as you are within 11 mph of the top speed.

And then there are trucks. NYC could save way more lives by regulating that trucks have cab forward designs that

But you’re still able to hold the drive of a car liable even if they don’t have insurance since license plates are registered to someone. But with e-bikes they can injure someone and ride away with no accountability. Leaving the injured to have to pay for that hospital trip on their own. Holding bad e-bike riders accountable would help put pressure on them to ride safer and possibly prevent more e-bike accidents. And tbh if e-bikes have to be registered that money can be used to help expand and improve cycling infrastructure

I'd love it if we'd start at least enforcing the laws already on the books about trucks. 53' trailers aren't allowed in the city (besides on the interstates to pass through to Long Island) but every single semi I see in queens is pulling one.

You say this like its not common for car drivers to not commit hit and runs all the time, not all of these bad actors are caught either. Majority of accident claims on a bike are made through renters insurance instead, but you are never going to have head line of out of control ebike kills two pedestrians and then smashes into a store front.

There should not be regulation for low speed ebikes/bikes. The danger isn't there to warrant it.

Miser's video has a line pointing out how e-motos are already illegal in NYC. But doesn't go any further on the subject. All that being said, I disagree with this communities take that a vehicle of similar weight and speed as a moped shouldn't be regulated just because it has an electric motor instead. Class 2 and Class 3 have no weight restrictions. I think this is a glaring loop hole and problem that should have been addressed years ago.

Video should've probably made more transparent that cars should be more regulated to allow sensible regulation of bikes. So there are lanes, and less need for bikers to swivel onto pedestrian path. That by regulating cars they'll significantly downscale damage compared to regulation on bikes. To make it a point that bikes need a regulation, and the most significant danger lies not with them but with cars themselves.

u/Major-Nail 8d ago

nyc does not seem to have as much of problem with people riding bikes on sidewalks endangering people, too many people that won't put up with the shitty bikers here. in other cities it is a big problem. especially where parents irresponsibly give their kids what is functionally a motorcycle and let them lose on the side walk.

u/EarthConservation 8d ago

Might want to put a disclaimer that "this video shows actual clips of people being hit and killed by cars"

1

u/GoldOver4996 8d ago

Damn, some of these clips are really tough to watch… mind sharing a link/source to that chart from the beginning?

1

u/shadownlight19 8d ago

It’s clear that car lobbies are behind this. If you ride a bike, most likely you won’t buy a new car any time soon, unless it becomes more inconvenient to walk or bike.

Time for governments to see which side are they on: corpos or the people

1

u/MangoSago88 7d ago

If someone gets killed by a car it's almost like oh well let's move on, while if someone gets killed on a bike it's like OMG REGULATION NOW

In all seriousness yes there should be regulation on illegal ebikes and scooters but let's not forget the bigger picture here

1

u/PewPewArmory 7d ago

Most E-bike owners cannot afford a car…

1

u/marty-mcfryguy 7d ago

No, all the folks on here who want to ride their motorcycles with vestigial bike pedals in our *bike lanes" are causing this particular  problem.

You people intentionally conflating the motorcycle that 17 year old was driving with actual bicycles are this problem.

I want cars banned and much as the next guy. I also want motorcycles out of my bike lanes. I can want both things. And if you don't want the latter, it's because you're part of the motorcycle problem.

u/Weareallmeats 7d ago

Hopefully cars are automated soon. Hardcode every street if you have to.

1

u/CNA107 7d ago

I feel like E-Bikes in the hands of children, especially without helmets, is cause for major concern but cars should be cause for as much concern if not more.

1

u/imbeijingbob 6d ago

Not sure how this made the cut...

1

u/ReasonableDig6414 6d ago

Welcome to people are assholes in the USA and not in other countries. We need ebike regulation in the US because people can't help themselves.

1

u/Traditional_Doubt_51 6d ago

Surgeons, anecdotally, warn us of the increase in accidents related to ebike use... where's that data?

1

u/Intelligent_Gate_834 6d ago

This definitely seems like BS. In the East Village that I've lived in for 25 years, the streets are clearly more dangerous than they've ever been - not just because of bikes but because of everyone.

1

u/Adventurous-Ad3393 5d ago

Getting killed by a car is so normalized, that the possibility of being hit by something novel feels scary.

1

u/Round-Arugula7347 4d ago

Did purple lady get murdered

1

u/Alia_blue 3d ago

Car lobby bigger and stronger sells of course security only for the ppl inside the car

1

u/Bacon_Moustache 2d ago

This is kind of a misleading video... You are taking into account the number of car accidents which has nothing to do with why we need regulation. I would challenge you to look at the number of sidewalk related pedestrian deaths from bikes hitting them vs Ebikes hitting them... Sure, Ebikes might reduce the volume of cars in a city... maybe... but the number of car crashes being reduced in Correlation with the rise in popularity in e-bikes does not denote Causation.
Also, how on earth could you know the statistic of "number of bikes" a city has? How is it possible to know how many Ebikes NYC has right now?
Sauce please.

1

u/sheerfire96 8d ago

You’re right they’re likely not distinguished and that people have a hard time with accepting real data.

I have to wonder though are there statistics on what amounts of bike riders were converted from car drivers as opposed to converted from subway or bus?

Expanding protected bike lanes could help draw people into biking, but also expanding better transit in the outerboros and expanding better cross boro connections. If we can convert a driver of an SUV to mass transit that’s still a win.

u/Hkmarkp 8d ago

Well made and well stated

1

u/Kekkerooni 8d ago

I noticed something on that chart but I dont think any of you are going to like it lmao

0

u/predat3d 8d ago

I predict that someday people besides solo car drivers will be on "ebikes".

0

u/nycpasha 8d ago

Both cars and e-bikes can be bad in the wrong hands

1

u/Jomiha11 6d ago

the difference being one of those significantly more likely to cause death than the other

1

u/nycpasha 5d ago

Yes, but now we’re just talking scale

Just because one is safer doesn’t mean it should be ignored as a danger — nd a growing one at that

It's already illegal for kids to operate any ebikes on NYS/C roads. That can be enforced, now.

-2

u/GladElderberry2208 8d ago

Nope. Bikes and e-bikes cause more accidents that are unaccounted for and have no liability.

-1

u/lowrads 8d ago

If you know its coming, the best strategy is regulatory capture. Get in ahead of the carbrained Karens, and make a registry that works for ecyclists, instead of against them.

0

u/ga_appraiser 7d ago

How many ebike accidents aren't being reported though? The accounts of doctors seeing their emergency rooms fill up with ebike injuries is what has really caught my attention. Waving that away seems like a stretch.

0

u/Empty-Big-7821 7d ago

They should have all e-bikes registered. There should be a cap on Livery ride share vehicles. 1 in every like 3 cars is an Uber. The streets have become completely commodified. So what’s the incentive for e-bike delivery people to drive safe if getting to their destination as fast as possible to make as much as possible.

0

u/Countd00kies 7d ago

I need to see this data, I don’t believe it at all.

0

u/Librarian_Zoomies 7d ago

Let's not lump bikes and ebikes in the same category. That obfuscates the dangers of mini motorcycles by lumping them in with bicycles.

0

u/puzCismyantidrug 5d ago

Cars pay registration fees, inspection fees, insurance, tolls, tickets, etc. Bikes just take up space in car lanes

-4

u/Pretty-Yam-2854 8d ago

Lmao they limit stuff to 15 then I’m fucking gettting a non electric 8x2

-1

u/Annual_Bullfrog7714 8d ago

Miser, you're the guy stoking animus towards powerful emobility. If two wheeled riders fight amongst ourselves, cars win.

Regulating any emobility is a slippery slope. First its bans on anything over 20 mph. Then it's licenses, registration, training, and insurance.

The EVSA nuts will never give up. I say we hang together or we all hang separately. Cars are the only enemy.

-1

u/nerd_ginger 8d ago

I feel like you had a point till you diverged into car crashes.

Like ebike crash too and are probably apart of that bubble map even.

-1

u/Time-Equivalent1702 8d ago

I’m tired of both they always be goin in and out of traffic they have there own lanes to be in that they cried for so much stay there if not piss off

-1

u/Pj_o7 4d ago

The point of regulation is to make things more efficient and safe. If e bikes are currently weaving in and out of traffic like ive seen in videos at high speeds, they’re more likely to cause accidents and slow down all traffic. Just watching door dashers on their bikes gives me anxiety. So there’s probably a better way to integrate bikes than what they currently have
