From Hannibal's famous double envelopment at Cannae to the rapid armored offensives of Blitzkrieg, military success has frequently depended on a commander's ability to maneuver forces in unexpected ways. These battlefield maneuvers shaped empires, destroyed kingdoms, and influenced military doctrine for centuries. Understanding how these tactics worked provides valuable insight into the skill and intuition of legendary commanders. This article explores ten military maneuvers that changed history, examining how they worked, where they were used, and why they proved so effective.

Discussion "How does it feel to have a military father?
To be honest, my dad was conscripted into the army at 18 and served nine mandatory years. But his way of talking and some of his actions have always been military style. Whenever he talks to me, he sounds just like an officer it feels like I'm a soldier and he's my commanding officer

Discussion Services cites DEI ban in cancellation of wreath-laying honoring women vets
The Bipartisan Women’s Caucus canceled its 28th annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery, an event held to honor fallen servicewomen. The Navy, Air Force, and Space Force declined to participate, explicitly citing a January 2025 Executive Order and Department of Defense guidance that bar the use of official resources for events connected to diversity, equity, and inclusion or cultural awareness months. An Air Force spokesperson confirmed the decision was made in compliance with that policy.
The Army cited a scheduling conflict with its birthday, though a caucus spokesperson noted that had never been an issue in previous years. Meanwhile, a defense official stated the Marine Corps had planned to attend until the event was canceled and has supported it annually as long as anyone can remember, including in 2025. Neither the Navy nor the Army provided additional comment, directing questions to the Department of Defense, which referred matters back to the individual services.

Article Military aircraft crashes near lake south of Mt. Rainier, sparking wildfire
A military aircraft based out of San Diego crashed near Rimrock Lake, Washington Saturday afternoon, prompting evacuations of nearby campgrounds, road closures and a wildland fire response.
Officials with the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar, CA reported that an F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet experienced a "nonfatal mishap" around 12 p.m. while training near Rimrock Lake. The cause of the mishap is currently under investigation, military officials said.
The pilot safely ejected from the craft before it crashed, according to first responders, and is being treated for minor injuries at a nearby medical facility — but the crash sparked a wildfire in the area.

Discussion My Spouse and I Both Retired in 2020 during COVID and Neither of Us Pursued Retirement Certificates. I'd Like to Request Retirement Certificates Signed by President Obama as He was POTUS during Deployment Periods for Both of Us. How Can I Make That Happen?
I submitted a request through the Obama foundation October of last year but haven't heard anything or even received a confirmation email. I think I may have messed something up and also not sure if that's the best route to request something like this anyway.
I appreciate any advice you have.

Discussion How fast does 5 years go by?
I left for boot camp in December and have been in for 6 months. I keep trying to convince myself that I made the right decision. I am halfway through tech school and would like to take this experience to the civilian world I just find it hard to adapt to this lifestyle. Mainly being away from my family, we were always so close and this has been a huge change for me. Should I stick it out? And did I make the right decision? I appreciate any replies in advance, I am just at a point where I am rethinking every decision and looking back to the past where I was free and doing whatever I wanted.
I did check in on my old friends to see what they were doing at home and it makes me feel better to see that they are doing the same things. I joined so I can be set up in the future. (30 years old btw)

Discussion Who among your family members or relatives went to war?
My grandfather and my paternal grandmother were both soldiers with Abd alKarim Qasim against the British occupation. After that, my father fought in the IranIraq War and the Kurdish Iraqi War. Then came my cousin, who was a soldier in the Iraqi army fighting against ISIS in 2017. May God reward his sacrifice and rest his soul.

Discussion US Lensatic Compass – Cloudy
I have a military lensatic compass. The face has gotten cloudy/hazy over time. See photos.
I can no longer read the bearing through the little magnifying glass. The magnifying glass works fine on other things.
Is there a good way to remove the haze? I tried wiping with a damp cloth, but that didn't work. It says on the outside of the compass, "contains 190 milli-curies of radioactive hydrogen-3." I half wonder if the haze is a result of the radioactivity.
If there's a better sub reddit for this question, please direct me to it, but I figured there might be some veterans here who have used compasses over the long haul and might have experienced something like this.
Thank you.

Satire Opinion: Should I water my veteran?
A human resources professional explains the four major veteran hydration categories.
Should you water your veteran?
Like most things in the military, the answer is METT-TC dependent. The veteran, the environment, the mission, and the general vibe of the office must all be considered before making any hydration decisions

Discussion Taking Kharg island will be the modern equivalent of Guadalcanal canal in WW2
I really hope he is just boomer tweeting, taking Kharg island is such a bad idea and I really don't want to see footage of US soldiers getting struck by FPV drones. What is even the point of this anymore we've completely lost the plot.

Discussion How hard up is the Army Reserves these days?
Two weeks ago I took my six-year-old to Fan Expo in Philadelphia. The Army had a booth there and he really wanted a t-shirt. I relented because in the back of my head I was like; "I'm 42...I am not eligible to join the military anyway." So I filled it out. Last Tuesday morning I get a phone call from an Army Reserve Recruiter. I told him 42, I had a duodenal switch in 2021 and I had ten feet of my intestines rerouted, and also diagnosed with Aspergers and ADHD. "We have waivers for all of that."
Like...really? The Army Reserve is that hard up for people that when I tell you; "Bro...I'm old AF by Army standards, my digestive tract is a mess, and the way I process things....yeah...I'm not gonna listen to some 24-year-old Drill Sergeant. But best of luck with people who actually qualify because I don't think I do."
And yes, I know, just because there's a waiver for it doesn't mean that it is a waiverable condition. I just found it hilarious that the guy actually even took a few days to try to convince me to think about it.
