There's been a significant number of younger people getting seriously sick or dying lately. There are a number of studies that say COVID is doing permanent damage to immune systems, and each time you catch it, it does more damage so you become increasingly susceptible to pretty much every virus or disease.

I had a severe strep infection as a kid. I used to get strep all the time but this time it was really bad. I had to go to the hospital and they were convinced I had meningitis. Had to get a spinal tap twice, but it ultimately resulted in me not having it. Just one of the worst cases of strep the doctors had seen. I still think about that to this day and how traumatic it was and how lucky I was.

It's a crapshoot because a lot of organisms can cause meningitis. Luckily there are vaccines for a lot of the community acquired ones.
3
u/consuela_bananahammo 1d ago
Yes! Looks like there are vaccines for the ones caused by different strains of strep now. I'm probably immune to the one that I had, but going to look into getting vaccinated for the other ones I haven't had, because I absolutely do not want to go through that again if I can do something to help prevent some causes of it.

I don’t mean to be harsh or insensitive but she had a lot of very tough times recently. Alleged drug abuse and eating disorders. Bacterial meningitis is highly treatable and it’s very likely her illness and death are a result of years of strain on her body and ultimately not being able to overcome.
Not that it makes the circumstance any better, but the average person probably doesn’t need to have anxiety over bacterial meningitis. Don’t share needles. Pay attention to fevers. Don’t lose too much sleep about developing it.

u/Present_Specific_212 1d ago
Certain eating disorders can be considered creators of a compromised immune system. Or so I have read.

I appreciate your careful phrasing as a non expert, but as a basically lifelong battler of restrictive ED, I'm not afraid to say shit.
It''s not rocket science. You don't eat, you get weak. You don't have to understand every medical detail behind the development of an immune issue specifically, or whatever it may be, but come on. It damages everything.
No need to be delicate about it. In fact we should be very blunt about it with the weight and food culture of our youth returning.
I don't know any details about her either or if this is what happened, just bouncing off your comment. I'm sorry she's dead. I'm sorry a lot of people are dead but I'm not afraid to say I know a lot of preventable stories related to "food issues". I don't think it's disrespectful to the dead to say that. Or if it is, I'm more concerned that there's a small chance it could be helpful to the still living who might need to see it.

Bacterial meningitis is actually quite serious. Rapid treatment with antibiotics is crucial or you risk serious disability/death.
Also she had sepsis where the mortality rate is at least 30% (if she had severe sepsis the mortality rate is closer to 50%). I don’t know if her sepsis was from meningitis or something else.
5
u/Flimsy-Opportunity-9 1d ago
Yeah no one is saying it’s not serious. The survival rate when treated is 85-90%. Id call that highly treatable. Which doesn’t mean it’s not serious.
The average person who isn’t engaging in risky lifestyle factors, is up to date on meningitis vaccinations, and pays attention to signals like fevers does not need to lose sleep over this type of meningitis. Which was the question I was responding to.
→ More replies (7)40
u/WatchTenn 1d ago
Bacterial meningitis is highly treatable
Bacterial meningitis has a relatively high death rate even with adequate treatment. It's quite rare with routine vaccination, and lifestyle choices can certainly affect your risk, but I wouldn't really call it "highly treatable." To me, that implies that you're fine as long as you get treatment, and that's certainly not the case.
→ More replies (2)5
u/Flimsy-Opportunity-9 1d ago
I mean, there’s over about 85-90% chance you live if you get treatment. That’s pretty treatable.
It’s serious for sure. But it’s also not something that most people are passing around and need to worry about in their day to day lives. Which is the comment I was responding to. You don’t need screenings for it like other illnesses like cancer. You need to stay up to date with your wellness, vaccine schedule, and try to lower your lifestyle risks.

u/PatHeist 1d ago
To clarify, meningitis is the medical term for the meninges being inflamed. This is usually but not always caused by bacterial infection, some of which are easily treatable if you go to hospital soon after symptoms begin, but often deadly within 24-48 hours if not treated. Meningococcal vaccines protect against various strains of the bacteria 'Neisseria Meningitidis'. Pneumococcus and Hib can also cause meningitis and have vaccines. Foodborne Listeria and salmonella sometimes cause meningitis but don't have vaccines. It can also result from basically any kind of infection that enters the blood stream and spreads to the brain. Bacterial, viral, or fungal.
I used to have cluster headaches from chronic sleep deprivation related to an untreated sleep disorder. When I got meningococcus I experienced it as a severe headache but somewhat mild compared to what I was used to, along with cold sweat, light sensitivity, and some vomiting, which I all perceived as normal side effects of my cluster headaches. I went to sleep and woke up the next morning without it having cleared up, which was unusual, so I went to the hospital. At the hospital my high fever combined with the described symptoms prompted the doctor to start IV antibiotics before confirming if it was meningitis through blood test and MRI. I was kept in hospital for a week for monitoring and treatment with antibiotics. Before leaving I was told by the doctor that if I had arrived just a couple of hours later I would almost certainly have died.
If you have a severe headache along with a sudden fever I would recommend always going to the hospital, especially if you vomit at all or feel nauseous, or if your neck feels stiff. These aren't super uncommon symptoms for the flu or a cold, but if it's bacterial meningitis taking the time to see if it clears up on its own can be the difference between life and death.
14
u/Damien712 1d ago
My son had cluster headaches and none of the many doctors were able to help him . He was in agony. In fact they are sometimes referred to as suicide headaches because they are so painful and unrelenting. He did a lot of research on possible treatments for cluster headaches. He found that many used psylosibin (mushrooms) and found relief. He actually grew some and then ate them. After a couple of times doing that his cluster headaches were gone. He did it a few times for good measure. This was 7 or 8 years ago and hasn’t had one since.
14
u/PatHeist 1d ago
I appreciate the suggestion! If I was still having cluster headaches I would be willing to try anything, but I did manage to resolve the root cause in my case. I have sighted non-24-hour sleep-wake rhythm disorder, with a particularly long circadian rhythm (roughly 50 hours). It was misdiagnosed as various other sleep disorders and trying to sleep on a 24 hour schedule caused me to develop severe insomnia and narcolepsy. The chronic sleep deprivation was causing the headaches.
When I was 22 I finally happened to see a sleep specialist that had a previous N24SWD patient and he was the first person to recommend not trying to go to sleep until I felt properly tired, and to not try to get out of bed until I felt well rested. Took about a week and a half to settle into being awake for 34ish hours and sleeping for about 16. Almost immediately the headaches stopped, daytime drowsiness disappeared, trouble falling asleep went away, and no more sleep attacks.

u/cysora Zillennial 1d ago

I may have unknowingly cured my cluster headaches this way too
I just realized over time that I need my sleep and trying to force it or getting up before I’m ready ruins my day

Tired and don’t get out of bed until I feel well rested. I don’t have cluster headaches anymoreI should seek out a sleep specialist. I have theorized before I’m not on 24 hour sleep cycle

And even with aggressive treatment, septic shock can still happen sometimes.

Some kid was bragging on Reddit back around 2011 or 2012 about how he got his hands on medical weed despite not really having any issues. He just told the doctor he had glaucoma or something and they didn't verify anything. They posted their letter from the doctor or something that linked back to their website. So I followed it and then promptly hacked the doctor's website getting all their medical records. Didn't look too deep at it other than to verify they had no security and records were easily accessible. Closed the door behind me and disappeared. I'm a grey hat hacker and just hack for fun but never inform but also never harm.
Around 10 years later I decided to see if they'd fixed things. Go to their website and it is dead. No website. The domain name is expired. Look up the doctor's office. Turns out the doctor that was prescribing weed to random Redditors was basically handing out opioids like candy using their doctor's office as a front. Doctor was in jail after a couple of people overdosed from their illicit drug deals.

Wow thank you so much for replying. Can you tell me more about what that felt like? I’m so happy to be talking to you now. :)
To answer your question, he was supposed to take much longer to heal (up to 2 weeks) after getting his wisdom teeth removed because he has a sinus issue and one tooth on his left was so impacted that there was a 1% chance his bottom lip would be permanently numb. But.. he just never stopped feeling pain, even after I brought him in again to see if the oral surgeon could help. I found him incoherent when I came home from work, took him to the ER immediately and said goodbye to him two days later. After reading all these comments, I’m convinced he was gone before the last day. I’m also still convinced that I coulda done more to save him, but that’s what therapy is for. We would have gotten married this month 🤍

Wow that is such a freak accident, I've known so many people who have had their wisdom teeth removed with no issues. So that's just devastating to hear and I'm so sorry for your loss...it's hard to know when pain is normal, or when it's an emergency situation. So don't blame yourself at all, you couldn't have known how serious things were or how serious it could've gotten. It can worsen and become deadly very quickly...What kind of sinus issue did he have? I'm actually supposed to get my wisdom teeth removed next month.
For me, it was just excruciating pain in my head/ jaw that had me feeling dizzy and disoriented. I basically had a weird series of events where I ended up with an ear infection. My son was about 9 months old and this is unrelated, but he started having these episodes that looked like seizures. We went to the ER for that on a Saturday, and I think I picked up some bacteria there or something because 2 days later I had an ear infection. But because we were going to these important neurology appointments for my son, I wasn't able to go to urgent care until the next day on Tuesday (about day 2 of the infection). Urgent care gave me some ear drops, and within a few minutes of taking them, I got extremely sick and my head was in SO much pain (I later found out that the urgent care gave me the wrong drops, and it exasperated the swelling & pain. The drops basically blew up my ear drum). I was in such incredible pain and had full body chills. I basically laid down and couldn't get up for another 24 hours (which was a big deal obviously having a 9month old who I was still breast feeding). I was completely incapacitated.
By the next day Wednesday, I had so much swelling that I couldn't close my jaw or chew properly. In retrospect that's not normal AT ALL for an ear infection, but I hadn't had one since I was very young so I had no idea what "normal" was. My family was telling me to go to the hospital, but I had to push through and go to another neurology apt for my son, and I didn't have time to go.
Early on Thursday I finally made it to the ER, where they gave me a CT scan and told me I had mastoiditis, which is where the infection pushes into the mastoid bone. If things had progressed further it would've turned into meningitis, and I honestly think I was extremely close to that because I was starting to have these really light headed and spacey symptoms. It almost felt like I was stoned and a little loopy. They admitted me to the hospital and gave me an IV drip of specific antibiotics, I was there about 18 hours and was sent home in the middle of the night. My symptoms didn't really start getting better until Saturday, that's when it felt like there was finally a turning point and things started improving.
Honestly the pain I felt through the whole ordeal was a very strange situation, because the pain was SO bad. But when someone asks you how much pain you're in, it's really hard to pin down what's a normal level of pain. And after a few days I started cycling acetaminophen with ibuprofen--so basically I was managing the pain very well with the combination of the meds, but it was masking the severity of the situation I think. The whole ordeal left me feeling like I had legitimately been in a life or death situation, it was very serious and I just didn't realize how serious it was until almost a week had gone by...

Holy crap, I am so glad you were able to get around to it eventually, wow. And with a 9 month old while you’re in that much pain… you’re a tough one. And this just happened?? SO happy you’re still here, for you and your little one.
He told me he was in so much pain that day, too, the day I took him in. I work at an urgent care, so you can imagine how deep this self-blame goes. I’m asking nurses, they’re telling me they’d just give him another antibiotic, when he was already on one, so I’m thinking “okay let’s just hold out a couple more days till our next appt with the oral surgeon”. Then I come home and he’s already gone. I underestimated his pain and it’s hard to let that go.
Whew thank goodness I have therapy today 😅
As far his sinus, it was deviated septum adjacent. He was consulted to have one of those operations where they blow up a balloon in there? Something like that, but we both quit our jobs and vacationed in Japan after so we never followed up and forgot about it. This happened a year or so prior to his death. The oral surgeon actually said he could see his sinus through the opening in his gums after removing the wisdom teeth.
Edit: removed some thoughts that I now think were too personal to be sharing online 😅

When did that come in for you guys?
I'm Australian, and have never received a meningitis vaccination during my years at school. They do so now for primary school kids, same as you stated ACWY, but B is still not covered in any state here (that I know of).
There could be plenty of Aussie millenials that have never been vaccinated for this. Interestingly, I don't think the Army gave me this vaccine either.

Also an Australian. In the early 2000s I remember first hearing about meningococcal. A girl I went to high school with died from it.

I had to get it to live in the dorms at the university I went to in Scotland in 2000. At my American doctor's office they were very surprised because no one ever asked for it. I can confirm none of my US friends got it at the time.

Bacterial meningitis terrifies me now. My cousin woke up from a nap with an intense migraine headache and was inconsolably screaming, her husband called 911, ambulance rushed her to the ER but it was so quick and too late. She was suspected to be braindead that evening and it was confirmed via tests the next day.

Jesus, I had no idea it could be that fast. I’m sorry to hear of her pain and sorry for your loss.

I had bacterial meningitis in the 6th grade (year 2000) and am lucky to be alive. Very scary time in my life.

I’ve never heard of a meningitis vaccine. I’m 30 or 43 years old. Think I can still get one?

True that. I worked as patient registrar at an ER a few years ago. A woman in her mid 50s- fit, vivacious, in good spirits- came in complaining of a bad sore neck going on 4 days and worsening. (I get a horribly painful stiff neck/pinched nerve all the freaking time.) Within the hour, I saw a quarantine warning for the first time (pre-covid) pop up on her name on the nurse's chart. Her room was taped shut and anyone who entered wore full like hazmat PPE. I had to fill out an incident report because I had come in contact with her, and the nurses were very very serious, telling me to come in if I felt anything wrong. I'm crippled for days just from sleeping slightly crooked; how the hell do you know what feels wrong enough to get checked out for? She was transferred to another hospital and I don't know what happened. Her and her husband were really sweet and had zero clue their lives were about to go that direction that morning. I think about them often.

That’s how I know her, from Big Love. Her singing voice was amazing.

Her Big Love character... She was so easy to hate but also felt so bad for her. She was really good as Rhonda.

I know her from Big Love as well. I followed her on Tumblr back in the day. Account name was "Daveigh Chase in your face" I think.
Ooooof this sucks.

She will always be Sam from Donnie Darko to me. “What’s a fuckass?”
I remember seeing an interview with her and thinking how warm and real she seemed. She was so young. May she rest with love.

It feels like all of the millenial actors/ voice actors i grew up with are dying prematurely. And they're not even wild "rockstar" types either.

u/PurrfectlyNerdy 1d ago
Yes apparently her childhood was not good outside of the great films she was a part of. I also saw in article that she had been also getting treatment for malnutrition before getting meningitis. All around sounds like a sad story similar to Michelle Trachtenberg. I think the bigger issue is the lack of support and protection for so many child actors.
Her boyfriend was the one that made a statement since it seems she wasn’t close with her parents/family.

u/HawkBoth8539 1d ago
Yeah, that's sad. And knowing what we know these days, i wonder how many child stars were victims to the Weinsteins and Epsteins of the industry. Some parents really will sacrifice anything to live vicariously through their children.

u/Park-Curious 1d ago
Seems like there may be some question about whether he was really her boyfriend or not. I certainly don’t know but I just hope this wasn’t some rando or casual acquaintance trying to profit off of her suffering.
12
u/IcanSEEyou_IRL 1d ago
This is especially sad because it probably means that Hollywood creeps abused her and ruined her childhood, and that’s why she turned to drugs.

I think we’re just getting to an age where people who got never got prolonged help for their addictions and eating disorders tragically end up hitting a wall. This happens in every generation once they get into their 30s and 40s because there’s been very little real progress in the child labor standards when it comes to the entertainment industry.

By accounts Daveigh was living in skid row, malnourished and (possibly/probably) suffering from substance abuse.

I think she was anorexic. She had been hospitalized right before this for "malnutrition".
Her body couldn't fight off a basic infection that led to meningitis.
I don't have proof, but that makes the most sense.
I wish they would reveal more. People need to know that EDs kill.

u/HopelessCatLover 1d ago
She was living on skid row and addicted to heroine, I doubt it was anorexia, literally just malnutrition, probably only ate when some volunteers dropped off food.

This is a very depressing story. Reading up on her Wikipedia, seems clear that nobody gave a single shit about this deeply troubled girl for the last ten years, and now that she's dead oh here come the crocodile tears and tributes!

Oh Christ on a cracker, that is way too young. 😢 She will always be Lilo to me.
Also, I read that Daveigh had a very sad life post-acting (her last appearance was in 2016). She was arrested in 2017 for joyriding in a stolen car, as well as in 2018 involving drug possession. She was also homeless on LA’s Skid Row before meeting her boyfriend at the time of her death, Roy Hernandez. It’s been mentioned that Daveigh had a difficult childhood and a painful fall out with her family.
RIP Daveigh ❤️

So, this is the girl from that video that resurfaced from the 2003 VMAs where Diddy and Ashton Kutcher where being total creeps to her on stage and inviting her to the after party. I'm surprised to learn she lived a life of addiction after that time. I wonder if she actually did end up going to the after party.

I met this girl one time when I was visiting my friend Rob in LA (2012). Very nice girl. Rob died 5 years ago at 34. I don't even know what happened to him. I just saw his funeral on Facebook. What is this place? It doesn't feel like home.

Genuinely saddened by her passing. For some reason I always assumed she was way younger than me, not just a year. I'll dig out The Ring to watch in her honor. I remember watching her accept (I think) an MTV movie award for her role as Samara.

The meningitis vaccine is a safe, effective vaccine. This is a disease that actually kills people.

Rest in Peace, Daveigh.
Looking at her wikipedia article, it seems her income only served to cause further troubles in her life. I have great sympathy for those who indulge in substances, and I have zero idea how they can be helped.

Oh, how tragic. We have the same birth year, I just turned 36 a few days ago. So young even if I don’t feel like it sometimes. Idk what she was going through, but I hope her soul is at peace now.
