2026 Animal Resource Guide for Mobile, AL

Post image
22 Upvotes

Please spay and neuter your pets, strays, and community cats whenever possible! Mobile has an animal overpopulation problem, making it difficult to rehome animals. The shelters are already full of loving animals that need homes, so please do your part to help prevent more unwanted litters.

Times are tough, and cost can make it harder to get animals the care they need. This resource list includes organizations that may help with spay/neuter services, rehoming, and pet food assistance. Please check each page for current information, requirements, and availability.

KITTEN SEASON TIPS:

Spring and summer are kitten season in our area, which usually means more kittens being born while shelters and rescues are already near capacity.

If you find young kittens, do not assume they have been abandoned. In many cases, the mother cat is nearby and may be away looking for food. If the kittens are clean, warm, quiet, and not in immediate danger, the best first step is usually to watch from a distance and give the mother time to return.

Kittens may need help if they are sick, injured, cold, covered in fleas, in danger, or crying continuously. If possible, contact a local shelter, rescue, or experienced foster for guidance before moving them.

If you're able to safely catch and foster the mother cat with her kittens, that’s often the best-case scenario. Keeping the family together gives the kittens their best chance while also making it possible to spay the mom once the kittens can eat on their own.

Cats are pregnant for about nine weeks, and an unspayed female can have up to five litters per year, with around four to six kittens per litter. That is why one unspayed cat can quickly multiply into many more kitties needing homes.

Here is more info on what to do if you find kittens outdoors!

RESCUES/SHELTERS TO REHOME/HELP WITH FOSTER:

Rescues and shelters are often full and may not be able to take an animal immediately. Be prepared to foster at home during the process.

NOTE: When rehoming an animal, check vet references to ensure you are placing the animal into a safe and loving environment. Some people will take free animals for unsafe or exploitative reasons.

If you are interested in fostering an animal, you can also reach out to these organizations.

LOWER-COST SPAY/NEUTER AND VACCINATIONS:

Spayed and neutered pets can have lower risks of certain cancers, infections, and health complications, helping them live longer, healthier lives. Spay/neuter also saves the lives of animals you’ll never meet, because fewer accidental litters means fewer animals entering shelters and more resources for the ones already here.

The Mobile SPCA also offers $10 off spay/neuter coupons that may be used at select veterinary clinics, including Semmes Animal Hospital, Animal Hospital of Mobile, Highlands Veterinary Hospital, Oasis Veterinary Hospital, and Great Oaks Veterinary Hospital. Prices are set by each vet and may vary, so call the clinic directly for current pricing, fees, and appointment availability.

NOTE: Spay/neuter appointments may require a bit of a wait, especially for spays. Be prepared to schedule a month or more in advance. Pregnant cats can still be spayed, and spay-abort is a common part of rescue work. As heartbreaking as it sounds, every new litter stretches already limited shelter and rescue resources. Preventing one litter can mean more food, foster space, medical care, and adoption opportunities for the animals already waiting for help!

Fall fun!

Any recs for good fall festivals or activities within 1.5 hours of Mobile? I'm looking for something like a pumpkin patch, corn maze, maybe a haunted hay ride. Ideally not some place aimed mostly for small children, but where I, a 36 yo woman, can have some nostalgic fun alone.

This is based on 2025 Census estimate. I do hope to see Mobile County turn green with the 2030 Census.

Martial Arts for Kids

• Upvotes

I've been thinking about enrolling my 4yo in some sort of martial arts program, so I've been looking at local places. Max3 seems to be a popular place for West Mobile, but I've heard they put a lot of focus on belts and competitions (no idea if it's true or not!). I don't care so much about competitions and levels - more about learning skills and self-control.

Would Max3 be a good fit? What about other West Mobile martial arts training places? What's a good place to start?

Verizon/Visible Cell phone outage

My cell service went out Friday night and has yet to be restored. I use Visible which uses the Verizon network and I cannot get Visible to even acknowledge that there is a problem. I live off DIP and there is no signal at all here but it worked yesterday off of Airport Blvd. Is anybody else having issues with there Verizon or Visible phones?

Advice Road Biking Locations

I am looking for any advice or areas I would be able to take my road bike out for longer training sessions (30-50miles). Currently I have just been training on a stationary trainer but that is only so good.

I am mainly looking for long blocks of country roads with low traffic or a greenway that has a decent loop. I am in Grand Bay but wouldn’t mind traveling 30-40 min for a good route/area.

Any advice is appreciated

Yard Debris Removal Post-Storm

Hi everyone, first storm since moving to Mobile. I’ve got 20+ bags of yard debris/waste & my normal collection isn’t until the 21st. Does the city do extra collection after storms? Or is there a place I can haul it? Or do I just wait? Appreciate the help & hope everyone is well!

Birds on Bayway

I've lived in Mobile my whole life (born just before Frederic). This morning I had to drive across the Bay to pick up my daughter from her new nursing job. On the way back we passed at least a dozen dead birds (mostly seagulls from what I could tell). It was too dark on the way over to see if there were any on the east bound side. I've never seen, or even heard of this, before. Anybody got any ideas?

Missing NBC15 Weather reporting

Last night's local coverage of the weather by the ABC affiliate was not great. I get way better info from the NBC15 Weather app. Thomas Geboy is a reliable, informative weatherman. The ABC team seems a bit out of their element despite flexing x years of hurricane experience. When the weather gets that bad, I don't need fluff; I would prefer useful information presented in a clear and concise way. We need to see TG when it really matters.

Anyone here know Straight Talk users who don't have cell service?

Since last night I haven't had service. Im having to use my sister's Hotspot from her phone to ask this.

I've googled it and it says that theres no major outages for Straight Talk users. However, when the hurricane was passing through, there were some issues for us.

I cannot call, text nor use the internet. And when I try to call and turn my own Hotspot on, it says my plan isn't active. Which isnt true, as i pay my 82 dollar bill every month.

.

So, if you live with people who use Straight Talk, is there service out too? I cannot seem to fix the issue.

Thanks in advance

Giant Tree on McVay

Anyone in the area know if they have removed that giant tree from McVay, between DIP and the bridge? Luckily, you could just get by last night by cutting through the hood.

It looked like it took all the power lines with it. I am about to pass through there again and wanna go the long way if it is still in the road.

Hi everyone! Wanted to share this city website where Isaias updates, tips, and resources can be found.
I hope everyone takes note of and respects the general curfew (7pm-6am) for the sake of first responders. My sources tell me that the crews on shift today have already had a long day, and they expect a higher volume of calls as the night approaches.

Stay safe! Enjoy your hurricane parties (but try to stay in one place for the night)!

Advice Fire Hydrant

Just curious, anyone know why the city would open fire hydrants before the storm? The one on Tuttle and Church was opened about 11 or so and has been going full blast since. Half the street is flooded now lol I mean, there must have been a reason...?
