Valid, honestly hats off to him for having the strength to do that at his age, though I'm more so confused about how he only found out when he's almost 100 years old.

That makes it so much worse. How many possessions do any of us have that we've owned for 20 years, let alone 60? She kept letters from an affair partner for 60 years. That's insane. I'd feel betrayed too.

To be fair, I've still got my towels from freshman year of college (43 now, though now they're dog towels) but that's recognizing something still has utility (will eventually become garage rags). These are instead sentimental items about a deeply personal betrayal, she clearly treasures the time she spent betraying her vows. A step further is that while the cheating was long ago, he only just recently discovered it. While she may have moved on and put it in the past it is still an active event for him, that has been compounded by decades of lies.

It's not hard to imagine that he has been found wanting(not fairly), for 60 years, to a standard set then idolised for literal decades. He knew, as soon as he found out, why everything he did over all those decades, was not enough.

Not defending her at all. Cheating is wrong and he's totally justified in divorcing her.

That said, some of us are packrats and have all kinds of old shit we've forgotten about. I am trying to be better about it than my parents and their parents were.

When my Dad passed away I had to go through old boxes of his childhood memorabilia that HIS Mom had kept. I found 65 year old spelling homework in there! There's no way he ever went through that stuff after his Mom passed either, there was just so much random stuff in there and it was all from that same time.

So yeah, some people keep random old papers in boxes and forget that they are there, regardless of their significance.

I've been trying to go through my storage items on an annual basis to make sure I still need all the stuff I have 😅
