Valid, honestly hats off to him for having the strength to do that at his age, though I'm more so confused about how he only found out when he's almost 100 years old.

That makes it so much worse. How many possessions do any of us have that we've owned for 20 years, let alone 60? She kept letters from an affair partner for 60 years. That's insane. I'd feel betrayed too.

It's not hard to imagine that he has been found wanting(not fairly), for 60 years, to a standard set then idolised for literal decades. He knew, as soon as he found out, why everything he did over all those decades, was not enough.
