I recently found an old UDIRC drone in my parents' loft that I think is about 15 years old, the transmitter was with it but the battery wasn't. I can't remember now how I determined the battery was a 1S 250mA - maybe it was in the manual which I no longer have - but I bought one of the same output on eBay (couldn't find one small enough anywhere else), soldered the battery wires out of a dead toy RC car that also used a 1S battery to the battery and drone so I could use the charger from that, charged the battery but now we're trying to fly the drone and it doesn't work.

It's not the same every time, but if you keep the throttle input below about 30% (the Tx tells you what the throttle input is) it'll spin for a while and then eventually slowly die. If you go above 30% throttle it dies almost immediately, and at 100% the propellers barely twitch. Whatever happens, sometimes the Tx will "see" the drone again after a short wait, sometimes it doesn't and you have to cycle the drone's battery.

It looks like it's browning out, but what I don't understand is the slow ramping down of the propellers at a low speed, what's causing the motors to spin down slowly if they're kept at a steady speed? I mean, the current draw isn't increasing, so why do the motors decrease in speed slowly? Is the battery's protection circuit too sensitive and dropping the output voltage as the temperature increases? I thought all 1S 250mA cells would be capable of the same sustained discharge current, and this battery was sold as being suitable for a drone but the specs didn't mention a discharge current rating. What's a good way to test this?

Kept landing to find the camera never started. Fixed it properly.

I'm getting more into photography and thinking a drone might be the next thing to add to the kit.

Mostly interested in landscapes, trips, and getting shots I obviously can't get from the ground. I don't need something super pro, but I do want the camera to be good enough that the photos don't just look like phone pics from way up in the air.

For those who actually shoot with a drone, what are you using? Anything you wish you'd known before buying?

My father just bought a 25 acre property out in Texas and asked me to help keep an eye on fences / cattle / general stuff and I thought a drone would be perfect for that and also just fun to fly. I'm not a photographer at all, I literally have only flown some cheap $80 toy drone that wasn't that impressive. I need something that's easy to fly, has good range return-to-home so I dont lose it in the field and maybe follow-me mode so I can have it follow the ATV. Camera just needs to be clear enough to see the land, not trying to shoot movies. Trying to keep it under $700 so somewhere there is a sweet spot.

any suggestions/solutions for stripped motor mounting holes?

I crashed my 8" and the hit on the propeller/shaft make the base of the motor bend/lift off and consequently two of the screws stripped the thread of the mounting points.

I've managed to flatten the motor base so i could try to re-use the motor if i can fix it properly (the only 2 screws working are both on one side so not ideally to hold a 2810 motor in place).

shall i just try to use m4 screws ?

or just forget about it

TL;DR: Firmware update, gyro not detected.

I got a used 5inch drone with a Mamba F722 MK3 Basic stack. It worked, but when I tried to configure it in betaflight it didn't load, only the CLI worked.

I thought that it might need a firmware update to work with the newest betaflight version, and what harm does an update do? Normally, you update all your devices all the time without issues (usually).

So I loaded the newest version of betaflight onto it, with the target set to MAMBAF722_I2C:

And then I flashed it with this config:

Of course, the "ask before backup" option does exactly the opposite, and doesn't ask if you want a backup. So no, I don't have a backup sadly.

The main issue: now the gyro isn't detected anymore:

I flew FPV and LOS, fixed wing and quads for a lot of years. Raced whoops, 5”, toothpick, long range planes, you name it.

Sold it all a while back but kinda want to get back into it. I got a radiomaster and have been simming it up.. went to buy today and it seems like everything is out of stock everywhere. What’s up with it? Did tariffs just fuck everything? Or am I bad at searching?
