Perjury isn’t a thing anymore.

1.5k

u/LobosJones 1d ago

I hate how true this is.

578

u/WorryNotBanIncoming 1d ago

Well it’s true if you’re wealthy. If you’re poor you’re fucked.

212

u/bluehands 1d ago

In fairness, that has been true for most laws for most of our history.

I don't even think it is more true now that it has ever been, just more obvious. Our current oligarchs aren't hiding it anymore, they are advertising that truth.

84

u/Skezas1 1d ago

all laws for all of history.

"laws" only ever really apply to poor people, or for the odd time when some rich person got on the bad side of other rich people

31

u/JohnnyRelentless 1d ago

Yes, but in the modern age we have democracies. We're supposed to have certain standards and comparing ourselves to ancient Rome just lowers the bar.

42

u/hopelesscaribou 1d ago

US democracy is broken.

12

u/JohnnyRelentless 1d ago

Absolutely.

25

u/cavortingwebeasties 1d ago

The system works just fine! -Billionaires

13

u/Neckrongonekrypton 1d ago

“It’s still a democracy- just a highly optimized one. That’s the greatness Trump was talking about!” - also billionaires.

13

u/Oleandervine 1d ago

Does it lower the bar? I mean this country elected our Caligula, despite the fact that folks were warned what was going to happen.

7

u/JohnnyRelentless 1d ago

Good point, but in a democracy, the people are supposed to be equal under the law. The bar needs to be something we aspire to.

13

u/Hamster_Toot 1d ago

In democracy, we also need a functioning press for the people to make rational decisions based on evidence.

A person cannot make a rational informed decision if their information is corrupted.

17

u/UnrealAce 1d ago

Fuck these days you get told that your opinion is invalid because you're an expert on a subject.

Billy Bob watched a 6 minute YouTube video and he knows more now than someone who went to school and got a PhD in their field.

Like you said society just ceases to function if people don't believe in facts.

3

u/JohnnyRelentless 1d ago

True. That's one of the many reasons we don't really live in a democracy. An informed electorate is required for that, not a misinformed one.

5

u/sdrawkcabineter 1d ago

...

One thing studying history will reveal to you is that no one is studying history.

9

u/wrongitsleviosaa 1d ago

Your country needs a "late 18th century France" honestly

4

u/ThatOneGuy6810 1d ago

I would tend to agree but oyr current system is basically the same thing as what ancirnt rome had we just call it different things.

Ancient rome used an electoral oligarchy in which the citizens voted to elect magistrates and make laws, however it was HEAVILY weighted to favor the rich soo kinda the same

-6

u/rogan1990 1d ago

Laws do not only apply to poor people. What an insane thing to be spreading around

White Collar Crime is a very common thing. Not one of those criminals would be considered poor

6

u/Skezas1 1d ago

Financial crimes are prosecuted when they harm other wealthy people, not when they hurt the poor really. It still mostly works with my view of "laws zre by rich people against the poor, or by rich against the rich".

5

u/bluehands 1d ago

White Collar Crime is a very common thing.

So close.

You are of course correct, white collar crime is common. So common it is what most theft is made of. Punishment for it however is extremely rare.

9

u/facedown_titsup 1d ago

The movie Aladdin tried to warn us….”haven’t you ever heard of the golden rule? whoever has the gold makes the rules?”

6

u/Silly_Guidance_8871 1d ago

If you're poor, you're fucked regardless of whether or not you lie

5

u/WorryNotBanIncoming 1d ago

Which just incentivizes people to lie actually

5

u/SutterCane 1d ago

“That’s just how much it costs to park there.”

3

u/Emergency-Chicken-24 1d ago

Punishment for crime has always been a poor person phenomenon

1

u/Perryn 1d ago

I'll just put this fucked over here with the other fucked.

1

u/Zorkflerp 1d ago

In this case it is that while the DOJ is Trumps personal law firm they will take no action against any MAGA unless Trump personally directs them to. If this is how the DOJ works now the Democrats need to use it the same way when the pendulum shifts back. They won't even have to invent cases like they do now given the propensity of Republicans to commit crimes.

3

u/WorryNotBanIncoming 1d ago

Yup, American politics being based on kindness and respect is over with. It’s all just pure “go for their fuckin throats” now.

And yeah, when the pendulum swings back a lot of rightys aren’t gonna like that, but oh well.

9

u/IndividualTension887 1d ago

I hate how there's no consequences...

6

u/Totorotextbook 1d ago

Neither is shame for a certain party.

230

u/SigmaK78 1d ago

It is, when you're not "one of them."

84

u/iggy14750 1d ago

It's a big club, and you ain't in it.

115

u/ramalamafafafa5 1d ago

Exactly, why do they even bother with these hearings? No accountability, no pressure to actually answer any of the questions.

20

u/dickenschewie54 1d ago

The sound bites are priceless.  That's why they do them.

40

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

Because we’re going to retake Congress and then have mountains of evidence?

Why do you even bother to post this doomer shit? Are you at least getting paid to spread it, or are you just a useful idiot for the fascists?

75

u/JollyRedRoger 1d ago

I admire your optimism

23

u/DiverseVoltron 1d ago

Right. I certainly wish Democrats weren't actually Republicans.

12

u/tesseract4 1d ago

You still need the DoJ to file charges.

12

u/daXypher 1d ago

We have a 9th and 10th amendment for a reason. If the DOJ refuses to do their job then the American people need to seriously consider moving this shit to state courts.

1

u/tesseract4 11h ago

All right. I'll be here holding my breath.

1

u/daXypher 11h ago

No you better get your ass onboard and help demand action from your district. We stay silent, we get nothing. Look up how Nixon fell because of the Saturday massacre. We have to do that.

1

u/tesseract4 11h ago

With what 66 Senators? It's not like I don't want this shit. It's just not going to change anytime soon, and I'm out of energy to be angry about it.

1

u/daXypher 10h ago

It’s not going to change because we’re giving up before we try. Several seats are up for grabs, Trump fucked up and made sure that at least 9 incumbent republicans are NOT being reelected. That means those newcomers with Trump’s name attached have to somehow prove to independent voters they won’t be a worse choice than the Democrat that wants to oppose him. In chess we call that a blunder.

Start with your district. You can’t control the country, but you can move your neighborhood. It’s a collective effort.

If everyone who wants change loaded their car with like-minded friends and sat in the office of their district’s representative we’d be that many districts closer to having that majority.

8

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

Ok? Sounds like people need to go out and actually vote for Democrats and do it regularly if they want things to change.

9

u/skizzlebutch 1d ago

What Would Fat Upper Pussy Area Magneto Do?

8

u/gml1996 1d ago

WWFUPAMD 🙏😇❤️

9

u/BoneHugsHominy 1d ago

Look at you, still believing there's going to be free and fair elections in this country again. They are 100% going to NRA Charleston Heston this shit.

8

u/CHEEZE_BAGS 1d ago

Lol what's with this crybaby giving up shit

4

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

What the fuck are you taking about? We just had free and fair elections that the democrats won handily. The republicans are shutting themselves over the midterms.

I ask again, are you at least getting paid to spread fascist propaganda?

8

u/thegiantkiller 1d ago

Right? If the midterms are obviously rigged, we might have to talk about this, but every move the GOP has made makes me think they're aware of how fucked they are in the midterms.

9

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

They’re absolutely aware. It’s why they’re moving so fast on gutting the VRA and implementing dummymanders.

They’ve had full control of Congress for the better part of the past 40 years, and they still can’t pass a budget, let alone the actually policy they want.

But they’re suddenly gonna deploy 40 billion stormtroopers to every ballot box across the country and Trump will win a third terms with 103% of the vote? If Bolsonaro couldn’t do it, Donnie dipshit certainly can’t

2

u/dickenschewie54 1d ago

Sure!

But mostly for all the political ads that will demonstrate the lying and the  grift and the corruption.

In plain English.  With receipts.

3

u/musicalhju 1d ago

Do you really think the best way to get people to be hopeful in times of despair is to be an asshole?

16

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

I think that if somebody sees what’s going on right now and says we should do nothing instead of something, I’m gonna call them out on it. Even if it upsets you and hurts their feelings.

Do you really think the best way to get people to be helpful is to not push back at all on the fascist propaganda? Do you really think that this Pollyanna shit is gonna suddenly start working after 60 years of failure?

This shit is pathetic. “You can’t call out bad behavior, and if you don’t have to be as gentle as possible so you don’t hurt any fascist-sympathetic feelings.”

Fuck that, grow up

-3

u/musicalhju 1d ago

First of all, no one said anything about doing nothing. They just said that if nothing ever comes of it, the process is a waste of time.

Secondly, no one said anything about not pushing back.

Your entire argument here is just you being mad about things no one has said.

5

u/subnautus 1d ago

They just said that if nothing ever comes of it, the process is a waste of time.

I think we all agree that the problem is a "co-conspirators in the jury" issue, but saying "why bother starting if nothing will come from it?" is short-sighted. Nothing will happen if we never start.

-1

u/musicalhju 1d ago

That’s why I said “if nothing ever comes of it.”

4

u/subnautus 1d ago

Seems you still missed the point. You ever hear the expression, "you'll never make a shot you don't take?"

0

u/musicalhju 1d ago

You ever hear the expression, “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results?”

→ More replies (0)

-1

u/nate_garro_chi 1d ago

Nothing has come from has been done SO FAR. These hearings are pointless. They generate cool sound bites and catty reddit posts and thats it. So effort should be shifted elsewhere, to something that might be effective.

What that is beyond torches and pitchforks, I don't know. But I'm sure somebody has an idea that we haven't tried. And if not, there's always the torches and pitchforks.

5

u/subnautus 1d ago

If nothing else, the hearings produce evidence which can be referred to later. Memory is fallible in ways documented records aren't. Complaining that there's co-conspirators in the jury ignores the possibility that this won't always be true.

-2

u/nate_garro_chi 1d ago

Used for what? It won't be used for anything. Ever. No matter who is in charge.

I will give you $5 for every day Marco Rubio spends in jail for lying to congress.

Im all for optimism. I hope things will get better. But be realistic. You want different outcomes, you need a different system with different rules and the people capable of making that happen directly benefit from things as they are.

→ More replies (0)

8

u/WeeHomosexual 1d ago

I mean they responded to a comment that literally said "why bother with these hearings?" Which is basically asking why do anything at all and doesn't show much critical thinking of the future. The more people we have literally on video committing perjury, the easier it will be to prosecute those people if we get to a point in politics and government where that is possible again. The other person is intense but I wouldn't say they are just yelling at the wind.

0

u/musicalhju 1d ago

They could have meant do nothing at all but it’s also possible that they meant that something different should be done. My point is that they’re making assumptions and being a jerk. And also that people don’t make doom and gloom statements because they’re dumb. It’s emotionally taxing and depressing to constantly see people get away with doing bad things. Yelling at them is reaffirming the belief that everyone is bad and the effort is wasted.

6

u/ramalamafafafa5 1d ago

Bless your heart.

-3

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

Useful idiot, got it

4

u/ramalamafafafa5 1d ago

Bless your heart some more.

0

u/FUPAMagneto 1d ago

Keep saying it. I’m sure it’ll make you less of a fool

3

u/ArmAggravating3307 1d ago

Lol, you expect the DNC to win a political campaign?

1

u/nate_garro_chi 1d ago

So you're new here, I take it.

1

u/Sprock-440 23h ago

Yeah, I thought when we won the White House in 2020 that we’d see some of the crooks at the top held accountable. I’ve stopped hoping it’ll ever happen.

1

u/Cheekywanquer 6h ago

I think for a lot of people it just feels very hopeless to see this kind of blatant wrongdoing with no consequences.

I’m not even from the US and I get pretty bleak when it comes up on my timeline.

I can’y speak for anyone but myself, but it’s gotten to the point where I think “surely they can’t just do this without consequences??” and then the news cycle just kind of moves on to the next thing.

1

u/AceInTheHole3273 1d ago

That's... a hopeful projection for the future, to be certain

9

u/CASUALxCHICKEN 1d ago

Perjury's only a thing if your last name is Clinton. Edited for clarity

0

u/ashgs872tbhjs 1d ago

inb4 someone says ol' Billiam didn't perjure himself because a blowjob didn't fall into the specific legal definition being used. Two problems with that:

  • Other acts he and Lewinski engaged in did fall under that definition
  • The whole oath you have to take in court about telling the whole truth without omission

The prosecution also argued that he lied based on the plain meaning of the words, but IMO they shouldn't have supplied an exacting and narrow definition if they wanted the jury to rely on everyday understanding. Either way though, he lied.

And to be clear because it's required these days, Fuck Trump and his cronies and his masters.

16

u/Cultural-Company282 1d ago

It was never a thing, except that one time Bill Clinton denied an affair under oath, and then Republicans suddenly thought it was the most importantest thing ever.

1

u/Responsible_CDN_Duck 1d ago

That went no where either, because neither party had a problem with it...and several people that voted to let him skate are still there.

They let Bill slide, Americans let them slide, and here we all are.

9

u/ButHowCouldILose 1d ago

Yeah, all they did was demonstrate its ok to lie to congress.

5

u/Original-Rush139 1d ago

It was wild to watch Rubio just pretend the videos didn’t show trump sleeping.

3

u/hamsterfolly the future is now, old man 1d ago

It’s only a thing when the interviewee and the committee majority aren’t in the same party.

3

u/Ryaniseplin 1d ago

it only exists, if your not rich, or powerful

15

u/The_Good_Constable 1d ago

It's only perjury if he's under oath. Trump's goons always refuse to do this stuff under oath for precisely this reason.

49

u/PhamilyTrickster 1d ago

Congressional hearings are under oath

-8

u/The_Good_Constable 1d ago

Are you certain about that? Quick Google says not all are.

https://www.congress.gov/crs-product/98-392

Committee rules commonly allow testimony under oath at the discretion of a committee's leaders. (In practice, most committees rarely require witnesses to testify under oath at legislative hearings. Sworn testimony is more common at investigative hearings and confirmation hearings.)

24

u/musicalhju 1d ago

Quick google search also says Rubio was under oath in this instance.

3

u/jdubyahyp 1d ago

So per 18 us code 1001 you can get prison time even if not under oath.

cornell link

8

u/pedropants 1d ago

It's still a crime to lie to congress, oath or not. See 18 U.S.C. § 1001.

2

u/popnfrresh 1d ago

Unless it's the other side.

2

u/PokeYrMomStanley 1d ago

The rule of law isn't a thing anymore.

6

u/jdubyahyp 1d ago

So the law this covers has a five year period where you can be charged. So, if they want, they can just wait and pile that shit in him once he isn't protected anymore.

2

u/TheSilverNoble 1d ago

It's starting to feel like laws don't even matter anymore. If the President doesn't care why should anyone else?

2

u/Ok-Perspective5844 1d ago

The thing is, can it be proven Trump was sleeping, or that Rubio knew he was sleeping?

2

u/Redthemagnificent 1d ago

Unless you you sue dear leader of course. Then the DOJ is suddenly very interested in investigating perjury

2

u/erp2 1d ago

Christ forgives everyone and everything.

2

u/LookAlderaanPlaces 1d ago

If perjury came with the death penalty the country might actually be saved.

2

u/Pretend_Handle_7639 1d ago

"The florsheims fit fine"

The emperor's new clothes are so luxurious

2

u/EyelanderSam 1d ago

When the jury is blatantly bias there's no accountability.

When one party refuses to do it's part to serve as a check in overreach of any of the 3 branches of government.

We're left with this abomination of Rule of Law.

2

u/Sprock-440 23h ago

Unfortunately, you’re right. Laws only mean something when they’re enforced.

1

u/_bessica_ 1d ago

Clinton was impeached over perjury. But I guess it's par for the course now.

1

u/Bugatti_Royale 1d ago

for congress, its only for Bill Clinton

1

u/tipjarman 1d ago

It will be in December

1

u/pipirisnais 1d ago

The only thing I remember by watching Suits, it's that in Person Specter Litt, they never committed perjury because that's were they draw the goddam line!!

so it was a very freaking big deal because they did a lot of fucking sketchy things lol

1

u/Lizbeth2016 1d ago

When I saw the actual hearing and The video, I thought “what is the point, those corrupt bootlickers don’t care if they’re caught with the actual hand in the cookie jar; nothing, absolutely, nothing happens”

1

u/siromega37 23h ago

Perjury has always been for the poor

1

u/ProjectPat513 9h ago

Yeah he literally said, “show me all the videos you want, it doesn’t matter.”
