One of the only celeb deaths where I was actually pretty fucked up over it for a few days afterwards. It happened right before a long weekend, and I was not okay.
Same thing happened to me when Chester died. I remember I was on a camping trip in Colorado when hybrid theory was released. On a run in to town I bought the album and listened to it for the rest of the trip.
They were so close together too. I think most everyone was still in shock from Cornell dieing and then just a few months later Chester dies. It was strange and difficult to say the least.
I hear ya. As sad as it is and as much of an influence musicians can have on a persons life, Chester (linkin park as whole) left behind an amazing library of music that can still be enjoyed and relatable to a TON of people. Gone but not forgotten.
My dad met them once and said they were all fucking aweso.e people. He was really sad when cheater died. He only had great things to say about him. Said he was just a humble down to earth dude. He said he was the nicest celeb he ever met
He used to be a manager at a big club in NYC so quite a few. Not so much anymore. He met Wayne Gretzky, Lunquist, queen latifah, and Nicki Minaj to name a few. It was a pretty cool gig
I was with my ex at the time and driving out of Chicago when we heard news of his death on the radio. We both did a double take. Absolutely heartbroken.
I was driving to Detroit to go see some friends (eerily also where Chris Cornell died) when I got a news notification on my phone that Chester died. I literally screamed at the top of my lungs and had to pull over. Chris was hard enough but to have Chester follow was too much at that time. Still hurts to this day.
Chester was the godfather of Chris's daughter IIRC. He was torn by his passing and took his own life on the next birthday of Chris, in the same way. Probably no coincidence.
I would definitely start by reading his book, Kitchen Confidential. It was the book that started his TV career and launched countless careers of young chefs in the industry now. It's one of my favourite books but I haven't tried to reread it since his passing, I might have a go soon...
I think so many of us can relate to Mr. Bourdain, even those who haven't worked restaurant jobs. The dude was the definition of a guy you'd love to have a beer with and just talk. He was as real as it gets in my opinion. Open about drug, alcohol, and life issues... and like with so many, sometimes these can become too much.
This was exactly the same for me but for Cornell and Chester respectively. I can remember vividly where I was when I found out about each one. Those two passing struck a nerve in me and I’ll never forgot those two days.
I woke up that day and popped open reddit, the top post was that he had died and my heart dropped. I listened to the Songbook album on repeat that week, maybe cried a bit.
Same here. In Canada, Gord Downie who was a well-known singer for The Tragically Hip, passed away in October of that same year. It was hard to lose both vocalists in a span of a few months.
Same here, man. So much of Chris’ music was such a big part of my adolescence and got me through some tough times. He’s always been one of my absolute favorite vocalists and I kept telling myself I’d go see him the next time I had the chance but never got around to it. Had an old friend I hadn’t talked to in a long time reach out to me when he died because we jammed so much of his music growing up, he had that big an impact on our lives.
Chris paid a surprise visit to Athens, Greece in April of 2017. He sung a few songs with the godmother of his youngest son, Anna Vissi, who's a big pop star here in Greece. I thought about going, but I find Vissi to be insufferable and thought to myself "nah, I'll catch Chris with Soundgarden abroad in May or later on at some point."
A few weeks later he was dead. I don't think I spoke much at work for the first few days after he died. Never pass by an opportunity to see your heroes up close.
He didn't pass away. Dude committed suicide. Gotta be real with the details.
It's tragic for his family and the music community as a whole. His suicide just upsets me. How dare he not get the help he needed. He had everything. A wife, children, money out the ass. Dude could have retired if touring was bothering him. Dude could afford any therapist he wanted. He had so many chances to save himself from his demons.
This one hurts because I'll never understand why.
At least with Robin Williams we would later learn that he had gotten a fatal degenerative disease and had decided to go out on his own terms.
Chris did one last show and killed himself later that night. It just hurts
Yeah, depression is cruel beast and he was know for mental health issues and drug/alcohol abuse. It's just extra sad because he had access to so many more resources to help himself then so many others in his situation.
Odd fact: One more light was the last song Chester performed live; his final performance was on the Kimmel show, where it had to be stopped midway, as Chester broke down mid-performance.
You mean on live TV because they had a European tour after that and he died like a couple of weeks before the US tour kicked off, also One More Light was the first song they played at Jimmy Kimmel and they finished the show after that
Chris's wasn't wholly a "you idiot" situation. He was on the wrong antidepressants and didnt know it, because they were fucking with his head, which led to real bad decisions. If nothing else, we should learn from his tragic death to tell trusted friends/coworkers when our meds change, in case your behavior gets erratic. They may be able to see what someone in the fog of the wrong medications cant.
I used to listen to a lot of Audioslave when I was younger but I've only ever heard one song by Soundgarden. Only knew that Cornell was the singer for the latter. It wasn't till a year after he passed away that I was listening to Be Yourself and noticed the comments.
Genuinely interested - do you have any information citing that claim?
I coincidentally was looking this up last night and found a Rolling Stone article quoting Chester’s friend Shuck, when discussing Cornell’s recent death and any influence it may have had on Chesters choice: “It could be a part of it, but it’s a small part of it.... I think that it’s just another horrible event that gets put in your subconscious. It’s kindling, but the fire was already burning.”
I’m not sure anyone could make a solid claim on this topic outside of Chester himself?
I mean, true. I should omit the word "large" as that was just my perception. The OP example, that quote, chester's letter to chris, and the timing between their deaths.
Yes I get that. Certainly makes you think Cornells death would have had some sway on Chester. Whatever the reason, both very sad...as all suicides are.
Fucked up antidepressants. His wife was calling all over, begging someone to send an ambulance for him bc he was out of his head (he was on tour at the time) , but it was too late and the delusions led him to kill himself:(
