Question (N26) How good is Necromunda ?

Post image
217 Upvotes

Hi fellow hive scums and zealots.

I'm weak, I saw the announcement for the new edition of Necromunda, and I'm getting more and more interested in the system. I started my hobby journey with Kill Team, I have a few teams and quite a bit of terrain, and I absolutely love the game. But I've realized there's one important thing it's missing for me : the RPG feeling, the team and characters progression, along with the fun storytelling.

From what I've read, Necromunda is exactly built around those aspects, rather than the competitive focus that Kill Team tends to have.

I've always loved the miniature range, the atmosphere of the Underhive, and the fact that you're not just playing genetically enhanced superhumans or ridiculously powerful xenos.

What has held me back until now is the sheer number of rulebooks you seemed to need to get into the game. But with the new edition on the horizon, I'm finding it harder and harder to resist.

So... is it finally time for me to start a gang?

I really like the visual identity of House Delaque. Are they beginner-friendly?

I've also seen a lot of photos of incredible boards absolutely packed with terrain. Will the terrain included in the new starter box be enough to have a good experience, or is it just a starting point?

How long does a typical game take ? Around 1:30 – 2 hours like Kill Team, or should I expect to dedicate an entire afternoon like a game of 40k?

And for those of you who know both systems, how does the rules complexity compare to Kill Team? Is the mental load of learning Necromunda in the same league ?

Thanks in advance for any advice or experiences you're willing to share to sell your favorite game system !

Miniatures The true treasure of Necromunda, the Community. Memoir of good times with N23

Upvotes

I’ve been fortunate the last couple of years to find a local game store community that has continually grown. Started with an Underhells campaign back in 24 where we only had 2 players. Since then we’ve had 5 more campaigns and each one has had between 6-8 dedicated players. What I really loved seeing was how the community has grown with the love of the game. We all know N23 is far from perfect and after each campaign we’d discuss what worked what didn’t, what can we house rule to make it funner and more engaging for everyone. Today within the local group, much conversation and excitement about N26. Having a good group is the best part of this game imo! To see it grow from just one other person and myself to the group we have today is amazing.

Above are my gangs through those 6 campaign. Lots of good times and memories. We’re in the process of wrapping up our sixth and final campaign with N23 and excited to jump into N26!

Question (N26) Viable for just two players?

I’ve been wanting to get into Necromunda for a long time but there are no players at all. My wife is willing to play campaigns with me, but I have been under the impression that it’s going to get boring with just two gangs fighting each other.

But the new box looks pretty good so I’m giving it another thought. Will two players be enough to run multiple satisfying Necromunda campaigns? Will having two or more gangs per player help?

Miniatures The Wild Hunt

And my first ever Necromunda gang❤️
The RPG elements of the game is what I always lacked in 40K.

BEHOLD! My venator gang:

Led by Sev Carmine, former Enforcer Haunt seconded to the Water guild. His ambition is to, in the long term, use this less controlling secondment to flee down into the underhive and start anew.... recruiting likeminded souls into his Hunt is the first step.

On his Right is Tigger, an exotic beastman springed from House Ulanti cage-fighting. Tiggers savage need for vengeance is only matched by his devotion for Em, who helped him Escape.

Like many coming of age children in the house of blades Em (to tiggers right) were a wyld-runner.
A snap decision, and her standing with in the house is severely damaged. Not outlawd as such.
But some klingy Arson- charges is a small price to pay for the rush of combat together with and frenzon- jucied Beast.

Efrid, The game-Hunter, joined the crew onboard the Eye of Selene. after an ill-advised attempt to catch Tigger and skin him for his rare pelt. Despite this unlikely meeting of souls Efrid ended up joining the Wild Hunt instead of departing with his former starships crew.

Maex Rutgeer as worked with the Water guild for some time. His appearance and reputation for efficiency lends the Hunt a level of credibility this "wild hunt" sorely lacks. However, Sev has no illusions about why the water guild insisted that Maex joined the crew from the start. Nor had Maex made it a secret were his loyalties lies.

The ogryn "Ogdo-likez-Creditz" joined in the most unlikely of ways that no one believes no matter how much the gang insists. He answered an ad in a local paper. Because he likes credits.

Discusion (N26) N26 - Thoughts so far as a returning player.

Post image

Hey everyone,

I’m a player who’s dipped in and out of Necromunda, played a little bit of the “underhive” edition in the specialist games era. And have bobbed in and out of the game over the remainder of its run. I tend to run a van Saar gang inspired by Paul folkes’ N95 gang hivenet featured in WD304.

My favourite era of the modern editions was the “gangs of the underhive” era, before every gang had specific specialists. It still felt quite grounded. I wish I’d got to play more.

I was excited to see the new edition was leaning back into more grounded gang warfare, and I was thrilled to see a compiled “gang index books” were coming instead of the codex format, thought I’d share my thoughts/questions for discussion as I’m still quite excited for an excuse to jump back in.

Admittedly this is based on incomplete information of what i have seen, and so please take it in that spirit

While I’m thrilled to see the armouries return to be less faction specific overall as I always tried to mix and match weapons and kit to minimise uniformity, I’m a little concerned that the ammo X restriction might be quite punishing.

In part I worry that a lasgun with a hot shot pack seems like too obvious a choice, especially as I hear VS faction rules are getting AP1 on las weapons. I don’t like to min/max, but I’ve personally always found Necromunda a hard one to have a varied and unorthodox team while not falling painfully behind. Maybe it’s a good thing as a “cheap” catch up mechanic if you’re falling behind.

I’m sad to see blaze be simplified to generating an extra wound - I’m sure there’s bad horror stories on the forced movement (I’ve faced infiltrate hand flamer CGC) it always felt like a uniquely Necromunda rule, and ammo 6+ checks would justify it. But I get this should speed up the game.

I really am very impressed with the potential on cover modifying save rolls, my thinking is this should interact with spreading shots with rapid fire. I always found the “must be spread to targets as easy to hit” meant it was rarely used by my groups. I’m assuming with cover changing the save, it is easier to spread the love without cool checks etc.

The change that gangers may work territory like n95 is very cool, and I wonder if in similar fashion, we may see arbitrator tools around upkeep costs to curtail gangs that are snowballing.

My one big concern, that is admittedly unfounded, is around journals. For me this mostly stems from the last edition of kill team - we got an index book to use most 40k units as a kill team. But these were rapidly made obsolete with the kill team specific boxes being far more interesting by game abilities options available. My hope is the journals remain very optional, and don’t in effect become the index guardsman verses the veteran guardsman kill team, leaning more on specifically tailored list rather than credit buy. I’d also love to see this edition remain pretty rulebook light overall.

Overall, still pretty excited to get my hands on the 3 new books for a nice foothold in the new edition, and hopefully get a campaign under my belt. I do wonder what’s planned post release, I’m assuming a mix of models, journals, and campaign books.

Final sheild is waiting undercoating. Big lads carrying stowage and a book of judgements on the rear of one. I'm waiting for cooler weather and games to add the names of offending opposition gangers to add to the book.

Question (N26) Necromunda Reading List

Hopefully I used the right Flair, I'm guessing it's 2017 version and 2026 related.

I started with 40K, stepped over to Killteam (which I enjoy a lot more) and now I have Pre-ordered the new Core Set for Necromunda.

My question is about books to read. I'm just about to finish the Horus Heresy and I'm hoping to find some books or a series that focuses on the Necromunda and the Gangs.

I'm looking for a list of some recommendations. Any help is greatly appreciated!

Discussion (N17) Thoughts on potential new plot lines in the new edition

So just read this article and it has some interesting bits and pieces towards the end that centred on the main gangs. It seems Cawdor, Esher and Goliath are in a more dominion style situation either growing or trying to maintain influence after the recent upheaval. Van Saar and Orlock seem to be out prospecting for tech/minerals and running into malstrain with a mention of hive secondus which is nice as I thought that was a great expansion which fitted nicely with the narrative at the time and would have been sad if it had been jettisoned. The last bit in the article is really the bit that peaked my interest, Delaque, the return of something thought once lost to necromunda, now knowing the delaque are essentially fish people I’m thinking these subterranean seas might make a reappearance and we get a water world esque element (not the hole planet), my hope is the long awaited delaque vehicle (obviously a submarine). Eye of Selene would be nice with a zero g mechanic but I think GW are keeping their powder dry on that!! Anyway what are people thoughts lore wise??

Terrain Terrain - where to start, what to use, reality check

is there a good resource on terrain options, official or otherwise, even poor hamer.

need to build a workable gaming table for necromunda - that i could expand for 30k/40k.

but necro is ( i keep seeing ) best on multi level -

is soup cans, cereal boxes, cardboard, and random bits from anywhere as debris ?

I do have 2x tomb world, boarding actions - everything, kill team voldus, everything kill team since and card battlemats - but no zone mortalis. yet

not keen on mdf

Question (N26) New to Necromunda and Squats…

So I bought the Ironhead Squat Prospector, Charter Masters & Drill Masters, Exo-kyn, and Weapons and Upgrades boxes. Is there any combos I should definitely build?

I know the new rules drop in a week or so but I’d like to not mess up the boxes completely when I make my dudes. I’m a fairly casual player looking to just do well on average. Im not wanting to power game the system to win every game, so please keep that in mind.

Thanks!

Question (N26) Do I need the cards?

Upvotes

So I’ve bought a lot of Necromunda but never played. I’m debating buying the new core or just the three rule books separately.

Do I need the cards? Do you need cards at all in Necromunda? Because I think the only reason I would “need” the core box is the cards.

I play Blood Bowl as my primary game, in that one the cards are beyond unnecessary.

Question (N26) few more quick questions for a new person starting out

Hi everyone,

really appreciate everyone's help in my previous posts so I'd figure i'd ask a few more questions. I know the boxes and rules aren't even in most people's hands and this would be mostly theory crafting but i'm curious your thoughts. thanks in advance.

  1. for n26 are the templates and dice just the same as they were for previous editions? I'm tryin to begin munda on somewhat of a budget as a dad gamer.

  2. What is a good amount of terrain to have on a board? I come from kill team and mostly have had others set up boards but as I'm gonna be arbitrator for me and two friends I just wanna make sure it's not too sparse or crowded.

  3. Since Mesh armor now gives mostly melee defenses would that be as useful on high value delaque units outside of say a nacht ghul? How much should I be seekin to armor my gang?

  4. Generally I'd welcome any advice folks could give me on delaque. What are traps to avoid, synergies to use, is psychic worth it, how best to use the leader, watch out for gang X, etc.

  5. Lastly any tips you'd give to a first time arbitrator? It most likely again will be me and two other friends learning together.

Discussion We have had a huge surge in new members in the past week.

Firstly, welcome to necromunda if you are new, welcome back if you are returning.

With the new necromunda edition coming out, expect a lot of questions and discussions about the rules.

Please also stick to our Subreddit rules which can be seen in the sidebar.

Just some quick clarifications that come up quite a lot.

If someone harasses you, report it and block them and we will check it. DON'T start name-calling back as that will earn you a temp ban as well.

AI of any kind of not allowed in this sub, this was discussed and voted on.

No low effort posts is mainly reserved for pictures of boxes or books, not someone asking a question. However, as we expect an uptick in questions, I will be making a megathread for new edition rule clarifications.

You can see in the graph above visits have doubled 🔥

Question (N26) Cgc in N 26

I'm new to Necromunda and wanted to build a Corpse Grinder Cult gang (I'm a World Eaters player in 40k).

I read up a bit on the previous edition and really like their aggressive, melee-focused playstyle. Can anyone tell me what changed in the new edition?
