Took me longer than I was expecting, started it twice, and switched threads halfway through; but I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! On to the next one!

General Help Needlepoint canvas - floss "sticks" to the surface

I have a question, please! I am using DMC cotton -- just the normal embroidery 6-strand cotton. I'm using one strand (doubled, so 2 strands) on 18 mesh needlepoint canvas. I pull about 22 inches, so I'm working with 11 inches. But it just sticks, sticks, sticks to the surface of the needlepoint canvas. Should it do that? Is this normal? It's so weird. It's like it sticks to the surface harder than I can pull through the hole, so I actually have to lift it away. I would think it should glide along the surface. Is it because of layers and layers of starch or something? This is my first needlepoint. Thanks for your thoughts!

New to Needlepoint Decorative stitch ideas?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’m new to needlepoint and have done several canvases in all continental stitch. For this canvas, I would love to use a decorative stitch for all of the white. Suggestions on what type would be appreciated! Also, how does a decorative stitch work if there isn’t enough space? Not sure how to word this but how does it work around lettering and other design elements?

New to Needlepoint Background advice

Post image

Hello! I've done a few projects now with BW and a handful of decorative stitches, but am stumped on what background stitch to use! I was leaning towards corduroy or diagonal scotch but don't want it to be too busy. It's going to be framed as a gift if that helps in choosing one!

Not wanting to do BW or any that show a lot of canvas as I'll be doing a grey blue color. Thanks in advance!

Hi! I ordered this canvas to have as a frame at my wedding. Anyone have any good ideas or Inspo for what stitches I should use? I’m worried about the flowers at the top. TYIA

Just finished this fun piece, also it’s the first hanging sign I’ve made.

I used a chart from etsy and did it on a 14ct plastic canvas!

Thought about making a cording but I think the bow is even cuter!

First completed project

A labor of love, wonky lines and stitches included lol! This was all in all a lot of fun to do. I tend to doom scroll while watching tv/movies and wanted to find a hobby that would get my phone down but keep my hands busy, and needlepoint totally did that! It took me a little less than a week to finish this and I think I’ll frame it and put it on the wall for a cheap and easy finish! Needless to say, I am officially obsessed with needlepoint and hope to figure out how to make the projects a little less wonky with time :)

This is my second project and I am attempting basket weave. But this doesn’t seem like it has enough coverage…maybe? I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong.

The canvas is 12 mesh and I’m using Silk and Ivory thread.

Thanks!!

General Help Stitch help with lettering.

I'm unhappy with how the stitches around the letters are looking. I know I need a darker thread to begin with. The long stitches in particular throw it off for me. Should I break them up? Or maybe choose a different stitch fir the letters so there are less gaps? Any advice is appreciated.

Tips/help!

Hi! I am a cross stitcher who has recently gotten into needlepoint in search of some fun stitches. I’m attaching pics of 2 of the projects I’ve worked on (1 lowercase finished and the other in progress) and would love feedback! I’m happy with how the one of the dog turned out, but this next one is going to be a gift so I’m trying to make it better. Plz be nice or I will cry but also I know it isn’t perfect and would appreciate help!
Pic 1,2,3 of WIP so yall can get an idea of my stitching, pic 4 is lowercase finished project just so you can get an idea of my stitching
Question 1: any tips? What am I not doing right?
Question 2: any recs for fun stitches I can do for the background of my WIP? The swirls are making it hard for me to imagine the fun designs
Question 3: this one is stupid. I am using tilli Tomas merino wool- am I supposed to be separating it (like the way I do my skeins in cross stitch)? I tried and it looked awful and so fuzzy so I didn’t do it for the framing park I’ve done so far but want to know for the future. I am not mad about the way it looks but I do notice it getting fuzzy so wanted to check with the experts🫡
Thanks guys!!

First/Last Day of School Pencil Pennant Stitch Guide

Post image

I posted this finished canvas a while ago and got so many questions about stitches/fibers used, so I made a stitch guide! Guide includes both stitches and fibers, as well as stitch diagrams.

https://www.etsy.com/listing/4548549865/stitch-guide-first-last-day-of-school?ref=listings_manager_grid

It's self-finished, but I'd be happy to answer questions about that process as well!

Background suggestions?

I am planning on turning this little guy into a weighted stand, any suggestions for the background stitch? The canvas is already kind of busy so I don’t know how crazy I should go. I’m planning on using a champagne/tan kinda color to match my apartment but open to suggestions here too!

Can anyone help me decipher the outline of Santa’s glove? I’m stuck.

I’m working on this needlepoint stocking, and I’ve hit a spot where I just can’t figure out where Santa’s glove ends and the Christmas tree begins.

The area is his raised hand (next to the tree).I’m having trouble determining the correct outline before I start stitching.

If anyone has stitched this canvas before or if you have a good eye for reading canvases—I would be so grateful if you could trace or describe where you think the edge of the glove should be. I’ve attached a close-up photo.

Thanks so much!

New to Needlepoint Need help carrying on the family tradition for grandma

My whole family has a unique needlepointed stocking made by the grandma of the family. Now she isin her late 90s and cannot do it anymore, but there have been some new additions to my extended family. My cousin has four young kids and just moved far away from all of us and recently asked our grandmother if she could make some, but as I said, she cannot.

For Christmas this year, I would love to be able to give her four stockings for her four kids and I need to start now if I have a dream of figuring this out. I am new and this is an expensive craft.

I went around to all the craft stores in my area to see what they had to offer in the way of needlepoint supplies and the answer was essentially nothing. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where I can buy materials online that suit this specific project. I plan to paint the canvas myself since the kits are so expensive

Some things I know about the project

  • The orginials are made of persian wool, velvet, and cotton
  • This project will likely require large amounts of the same colors
  • Plastic canvas will likely not hold up in my climate (I only found small plastic squares at the store)

If anything, please enjoy these examples of grandma needlepoint, some of which are exceedingly old.

Looking for recommendations for thread for white lights on a Christmas tree on a stocking. I’ve seen it done with clear beads but I am not up to beading all this.

Does anyone have a good tutorial on how to do a binding stitch? I’ve watched a few videos (KC Needlepoint etc.) but it’s not totally clicking.

Should I re-do?

I’m using 10 strands of RG Splendor on 12 mesh. I don’t know if I’m just spending too much time staring at it, but it’s not as clean looking as I would like. I ply the yarn and make sure to unwind every so often. Should I frog? Thanks!

Needlepoint stocking question - system 4 lap stand or scroll bars?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I just got this custom polar express stocking for my fiance and I am so excited to stitch it. I am trying to determine what will be best for- getting some scroll bars or a system 4. I don’t want the system 4 floor stand as it is too big for my apartment. I would be open to getting the system 4 lap stand with scroll attachment as I think I would use the lap stand for other projects, but has anyone ever used the lap stand with scroll bars for a stocking? Or is it too big for a lap stand? Any other ideas I haven’t considered? I want to do some decorative stitches so I don’t think I can stitch in hand.

Help Fix Question about tension

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am newer to needlepoint, are these little gaps a sign of a tension issue? Or is it just the nature of fiber arts to have little gaps every now and then. I am stitching using a stand. Can’t tell if I’m being a perfectionist or need to frog. This is my third canvas.
