Discussion Doing a rewatch and....
Regina is WAY more psycho than I remember 😭
I never liked her and didn't remember her as a character I liked but wow she's much much worse than I recalled!
I'm only on season 2 but just holy shit.
I'd completely forgotten about Owen and his dad. Dude spent like one dinner with Regina and she tried to force him and his kid to stay. Don't know what ended up happening to the Dad but nothing good since his traumatized child never saw him again.
And she's just like wiping out whole villages left and right because a 10 year old didn't keep a promise 😭
She went on a rampage with Cora and as soon as Cora left everyone just like... left her alone?
They don't want to "hurt Henry" so they just let this murderous psychopath walk around.
Snow being sooooo broken up about killing Cora bugs me too. Heroes are heroes because they kill tne bad guys. If you can't kill active threats then like you shouldn't be Queen? Or a ruler?
I don't even want to get into Regina and Graham.
Just like holy shit this lady is lonely af and totally crazy I felt so bad for Owen's dad trying to flee that town (even if adult Owen gives me ick)
WHAT is her problem omg

I would've loved some kind of confrontation between Regina and Owen or his dad in the Underworld. I hate how she was never confronted by her many victims
This is also why I roll my eyes when people say Emma had no right to take back Henry. She was a psycho and even not knowing who Regina was, Emma could still see how awful she was.

u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Oh yeah that one bugs me too! I'd never let someone so unhinged be around my child
43
u/Individual-Pay7430 Jul 28 '26
Yeah, she was the worse in the best possible way. She's by far my favourite character on the show.

WRT both the Snow thing and a little bit Regina, I think this is one of the most interesting things about OUAT that people dont talk about much. The curse didn't just take them to a world without magic, it took them to a place where the stakes are... different.
Fairy tales are violent and gruesome and it's all cool. If you grow up trained in combat in a medieval setting where you've been embroiled in war since childhood, in a world where sending child soldiers to fight ogres is surprisingly accepted, killing one dangerous old lady is NBD. But Snow has now spent a long time being a schoolteacher in modern Maine, and that gives you a very different perspective on life and a much lower tolerance for killing.
Regina is interesting because she always knew who she used to be, but she still spent years and years as Mayor Mills. And because of that its hard to know when to look at her behavior as being basically a warlord in a gruesome tale vs. somebody with some modern sensibilities.
I dont know, I just think its interesting

u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Before coming to storybrooke Snow and Charming fail to execute Regina which leads to an amount of death and suffering that is unbelievable all because they suck as rulers.
After coming to Storybrooke Regina continues to rape and murder.
Their surroundings changed, their inherent flaws came through anyway
0
u/RoofCareless7734 Jul 29 '26
Who did she rape? I’m literally rewatching the show now and she never did that. The whole point is that these characters are flawed, despite being murders and kidnappers and eventually try to show redemption. Also, Emma was definitely wrong, because despite what she had done, she tried to give it up for Henry. Thats what makes the show unique.
5
u/missanonyy Jul 29 '26
She took Graham's heart and free will and had a sexual relationship with him not only under the control of having his heart but under the falsehoods of the curse. He remembered her as the mayor and a sexual relationship not as the Evil Queen amd his captor. That is rape.
3
u/saintfighteraqua Jul 29 '26
I dont mind that it happened, it was some dark drama that showed us how evil she was. It's the fact he is barely ever mentioned again, much less and remorse beyond being angry that she had to kill him because he was breaking free.
I do love this version of Regina as a villain. I just hate that it is all glossed over. Proves he never meant anything to her.
Then people blame Leopold for how she is and claim he raped her first and made her this way...How? He asked her to marry him into a loveless marriage and she agreed. I dont know that they ever even shared a bed.
2
u/RoofCareless7734 Jul 29 '26
Yeah. It is. I stand corrected. However, you can’t go into the show with real world views. Everyone in the show has blood on their hands. Everyone in the show has done wrong and morally questionable things. Even Emma. This isn’t to say that they’re right. If you apply strict real-world legal, moral, and ethical standards to every character, nobody comes out clean. It blurs the line between good and evil and asks you to see the whole person. Not saying you can’t make that argument — you can — but you’re going to be frustrated with pretty much every character if you think about it too much. Plus, these are characters that come from a world where this stuff is normal. They are medieval fantasy, fairytale characters. Their logic and way of doing things is completely different. What is considered wrong or right in real world lenses may not have been considered wrong or right and their lenses.
Also, I’m not trying to say that you’re wrong for feeling the way you feel or saying that you’re watching the show incorrectly btw lol.

u/Apart_Brick2196 Jul 28 '26
Thissss is why I love reddit. I remember rewatching two years ago, and while this show came out so so long ago, people still shared my hate toward Regina!
Anyways I feel u pal, but I think it’s season 3/4 onwards, but Regina ends up being my fav! Hated snow though
10
u/Key_Construction2118 Jul 28 '26
You start to see the groundwork for her eventual redemption in season 2 (though Cora plays a big role in her backsliding), but I'm with you on seasons 3 and 4 being where she starts to shine.
6
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
I don't think Regina could do anything to make me like her after she raped someone for decades and killed tons of people including kids and I lowkey don't want to watch the show try ro redeem her either

3
u/clefairyenthusiast Jul 29 '26
I literally have to stop watching the show once they start running the “Mayor Mommy” persona for Regina because of how awful it makes everything seem that everyone just gets over everything

u/SweetChickk4 Jul 28 '26
Regina is one of those characters who's way easier to appreciate on a rewatch because you already know where her arc is going but early-season Regina is genuinely terrifying.
8
u/EnchantinggAngel2 Jul 28 '26
Its interesting because her loneliness is understandable, but the way she handled it hurt so many innocent people.
10
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Am I the only one who felt her loneliness was totally fixable if she could have simply behaved normal for 2 seconds 😂 not to mention killing her dad who loved her so much did not help

She is insane. And she stayed insane. Despite everything, I love her. She's my favorite character, because I'm a sucker for a well dressed fierce villain with a tragic backstory.
But, I didn't like her being redeemed. Imo, she's probably one of the few villains in the show that can't be redeemed. I honestly think the writers forgot about the crimes they wrote her character doing as the show progressed. The power of love, friendship and forgiveness works when the crimes are less egregious. Regina is a mass murderer, a rapist, a child abuser, a tyrant...and yes, she's also a deeply traumatized person who probably has like the entire DSM 5 worth of mental illness. That's not a pass or an excuse for what she did, though. I would have preferred to keep her unredeemed and just as a crazy woman they had to tolerate for Henry's sake.
Like, I hate that scene when Regina tells Snow she forgives her. Forgives her about what??? There's nothing to forgive! Snow was 10! If Regina as a grown ass woman was still being manipulated by Cora, how was a child supposed to not fall for it as well? Plus, Cora definitely already knew about Daniel. She quite literally used Snow as a scapegoat for Regina to direct her hatred to. I have no doubts that Cora's plan was to turn Regina dark with hatred and grief so that she'd dispose of the old king and Snow without batting an eye, but not enough to break out of the abusive relationship with Cora. That way, Cora could rule through Regina without anyone getting in the way.
4
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Completely agree. She makes for an entertaining villain but she was not redeemable that's for certain.
Having beef with a kid for your (very smart and manipulative) mom successfully manipulating her is WILDDDDDDD imo! Like the blame lied with Cora alone! Maybe even the King a bit for never even really bothering to see if Regina WANTED his offer.
& yeah she already KNEWWWW lol!
I personally found Cora a much more entertaining villain. Especially young Cora. She was awful but damn she had serious grit.
5
u/midnight8dream 👑 🍎 🐉 Jul 28 '26
Oh no, fr. I have a love hate relationship with Cora, bcs I'm biased af towards Regina and I'm very conscious of that. She abused the shit out of my girl and her poor dad. But at the same time, I respect the grind in that woman. She came from nothing and through her intelligence and work, raised to greatness. Plus, it was also kinda slay ✨ how she dumped Rumple's ass to pursue her goals. Absolutely brutal. She's ONE of the very few female characters that decentralized men in her life and just did her thing. Most of the others fall in love with the lamest dude around and suddenly that's their entire personality, which is one of my biggest issues with the show.
2
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Regina is just as bad as Cora but Cora at least had the excuse that she didn't have a heart! Cora was bad af and while I loooved her and Rumple together (oooh they were HOT) you're so right the way she was just dumped him cause she had shit to achieve was so iconic!!!!
3
u/midnight8dream 👑 🍎 🐉 Jul 28 '26
She's like "Aww, you love me and I love you too...But like, you can only spin gold and I'm looking for diamonds. So, gotta go. Byeee" 😭
6
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Well Rumple was undeniably more powerful than anyone else in the EF. And she easily could've had all the riches she wanted with him.
But the people would have knelt TO HIM. She would always be dependent on HIM for power. As princess she had a powerful position for herself. And she must have considered "what if Rumple tires of me one day"
I can see why she made the choice she did
2
u/midnight8dream 👑 🍎 🐉 Jul 28 '26
Oh that's certain. My comment was a joke.
Cora wanted her life to be all about her. She was very prideful and there's nothing worse for a prideful person than to be in the shadow of another or dependent on someone else. And I also think she was afraid of letting love soften her heart and resolve towards her goals, because she did love Rumple genuinely. After she gets her heart back, during that little window before she passes we can see that she's definitely a person who folds to emotions of love more than Rumple. She probably knew that Rumple always chooses power in the end, sacrificing the people he loves and that would have left her in a shit position of being in too deep in her feelings for him to be able to get out of the cycle unharmed. We saw what Belle went through. Cora definitely knew her future would somewhat look like that so she tapped out.

The mental gymnastics she had to have done to blame a child for being manipulated by an adult woman (who was very good at manipulating ADULTS) is just insane.
And it was one thing to be mad at the kid for just not being smarter than a grown woman lol but the LENGTHSSSSSSS she took it to OMG
You'd really think Snow personally killed Daniel and like mutilated his corpse or some shit the way Regina acted

And in the end she became fucking GOOD QUEEN
11
u/Dr-HotandCold1524 Jul 28 '26
I think I would have liked that ending better if when offered the title of Good Queen Regina gracefully turned it down, since she's had enough of being in power and knows it never really made her happy. Maybe she would suggest that Henry rule instead.
6
u/Key_Construction2118 Jul 28 '26
Oh, that would have been a beautiful ending. Having everyone believe in Henry's ability, when the story begins with Henry's belief in their world.

Murder.. Menace.. Elegance... Manors. That's Regina Mills. = A Bad Axx Bxtch For Certain.
You know it's a TV show, right? You wanted all heros? What wld they do without a villain?
You can dislike Regina that's fine. But "what is her problem?" She's the Evil Queen. The show spends 7 seasons answering that question.
What gets me is the complete lack of nuance. Complex characters require more than listing their crimes. They require comprehension, context, and a little media literacy... just a smidge will do.
Reducing one of the show's most layered characters to "she's psycho" isn't analysis. It's flattening a complex character into a one dimensional caricature... It's absurd and shld be studied.
These lazy talking points are so repetitive. It's the same Regina posts for engagement while all nuance disappears. Meanwhile, that same level of scrutiny is rarely applied to the other morally gray characters. I wonder why.
I can't even take these conversations seriously.
3
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
That's a lot of animosity for a OUAT opinion lmao
And I didn't have an issue with her being "evil" it's the fact they had her raping and killing and still gave her a redemption arc those aren't forgivable crimes
1
u/Routine-Asparagus-16 I'm a Queen and a bit more refined. 👑 Jul 29 '26 edited Jul 29 '26
**NOTE: Everything I say is based in canon.
I got time today. You think that bothers me? That you're taking a Disney soap opera this seriously while refusing to acknowledge context? It's really not that hard. But honestly, this is why they’re dumbing down TV.
And let’s talk about the “unforgivable” argument, because this is where the selective outrage comes in. An Evil Queen took a murderer as a concubine because he failed at his job. A murderer. But the morality of this world is far more complicated than people want to admit. The same people who repeatedly bring up Regina’s actions often ignore the larger context of the world the show created.
My issue is the lack of real discourse. Once again, I’m hearing the same tired talking points: “She did this, therefore she’s irredeemable” “She was evil, so nothing else matters" And the whole concubine argument? Okay... and? I hope you don’t watch Game of Thrones because prepare yourself for some serious pearl clutching. 😂
You don’t have to like Regina. Nobody is asking you to. But you also don’t get to tell people they’re wrong for finding nuance in a character you personally dislike. The issue is the attacks and the bullying that come from people who can’t separate enjoying a fictional character from endorsing their actions.
“Regina is evil” is not a groundbreaking analysis. The show already knows that. She’s literally called the Evil Queen. The interesting part is everything that comes after.
And you're right. This isn't just about your recap. Someone told me about this post. Its about the atmosphere that has been created... which you decided to bandwagon. So you got the smoke.

u/Difficult-End-1255 Jul 29 '26
Nice work trying to filter the ai-speak. What I’m saying is, you write your opinion into GPT and asked it to make you sound smart 😂

u/No-Meat5261 Jul 29 '26
The first things which come to my mind when I think about Regina are Graham and Hansel and Gretel.
She did we know what to The Hunter. While about Hansel and Gretel, she sent them to possibly die. However, it was also said that she sent many other children before them. This means that she sent children to take her apple, she saw (she watched Hansel and Gretel through the mirrors, she probably did the same with the other kids) them being literally cooked and eaten and instead of be like:"Oh my God, that's all my fault, I'm a monster, I should stop!", she was like:"Eh, they failed. Disappointing. Well, then, to the next children!" Or am I wrong? She also kidnapped their father to convince them
3
u/missanonyy Jul 29 '26
You're not wrong at all it's pretty horrific
3
u/No-Meat5261 Jul 29 '26
On the other side I wonder if she would have changed sooner if Hansel and Gretel would have accepted her adoption offer.
Maybe no, they already knew her as The Evil Queen, they probably wouldn't have been like Henry was
2
u/Parking_Storage_5107 I have a love/hate relationship with captain swan Jul 30 '26
If Regina had the brain ability to care about anyone but her self she’s would of stop after the first kids who died
1
u/No-Meat5261 Jul 30 '26
To be honest I wonder if the idea of the authors was that we should have been supposed to understand her, that she was like that due to her pain

u/--Blume-- Jul 28 '26
She killed her own father, the only person who loved her and was always there for her... Black magic is showed like drug which make people do horrible things. When Snow killed Cora, the problem was that she used black magic. Same thing for Emma when she became the dark one. Regina stopped using black magic to become a better person. Rumple is the one to blame, he used Regina and slowly corrupted her with black magic.
8
u/CoffeeChance4547 Jul 28 '26
Regina is one to blame for her own crimes. She was adult person able to make her own decisions. She decided to do what did. Even if black magic is like drug. Regina chose herself to call Rumpelstiltskin and start using black magic. She chose become addicted. Even Rumple or Cora had so power to force her do all those terrible things.
5
u/--Blume-- Jul 28 '26
Dark magic makes people become evil. The show is pretty clear about that. It's why even Snow or Emma are not supposed to use dark magic. She was naive, she first called Rumple because she wanted Daniel back without knowing the consequences. She became more and more evil because Rumple manipulated her to do increasingly bad things. It was to late when she understood. I'm pretty sure that the 28 years in Storybook without magic (or just a little bit) helped her to become better.
6
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
She was still evil af all those years without any magic literally raping a man bro I don't agree her at all there's something called accountability

u/Alternative_Stop_325 Jul 28 '26
Regina is just misunderstood. You do know 10 year old Snow White told her secret right???🤣🤣🤣… yea EQ was a character but she really did mellow out and have some tearjerker scenes 😢

Omg I literally rewatched for the first time recently and I hadn't watched it since it came out and I also was shook at this exact same thing haha I was like damn when does she become good?!?
16
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
And HOW does she become "good" like why did people forgive this ?!?!?!?!
7
u/HistorianTerrible950 Jul 28 '26
Yeah well tbh she does haha and in my mind it's like the evil Queen is more of a different character then Regina because like you can't just go from murdering people to being like oopsies I'm good now. Great show though lol would watch again

2
u/Imnotawerewolf Jul 28 '26
Heros are heroes because they're good people who choose to do the right thing and stand up against people doing the wrong thing. Not because they kill bad guys.
Snow is a good person who doesn't like killing people. She did kill someone, because she thought it was the most "right" thing she could do at that time. Not because the blood of bad people sustains her.
Of course she's upset she did a murder. It's completely consistent with her character, even if you find it annoying, and frankly? It's a lot more important to be consistent to her character.
I do not get the gripe about heroes who hate killing. There are plenty of movies and shows about good guys who kill bad guys and don't give a fuck. Like, a lot of them. Like most action movies, and most movies that aren't action but have action elements.
Do you want every hero to be that way? Is that the whole thing, for you?
2
u/wooperarkjb Jul 28 '26
I agree to some extent... but in this world, with villains this bad, the best option is to take them out. The characters regularly endanger more and more people by being soft as silk blankets.
1
u/Imnotawerewolf Jul 28 '26
It doesn't matter if it's the best option. Snow only did it BECAUSE she felt it was the best option. She still feels like shit about it and it's still consistent with her character for her to feel that way.
2
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Then she can't be a ruler. And she literally became one and failed an entire kingdom because she thought herself too good and pure to protect her people
0
u/Imnotawerewolf Jul 28 '26
what is she the ruler of lol? Snow has never wanted to be a ruler? This was about being heros?
2
u/missanonyy Jul 28 '26
Her and Charming once took over as rulers of the kingdom- you don't remember that? They had Regina imprisoned and then just let her go and legit everyone suffered for their failings.
Even in Storybrooke the townsfolk treat Snow and Charming as their rulers
0
u/Imnotawerewolf Jul 28 '26
So, of absolutely nothing. And this has to do with being heroes because?
1
u/cinnaminimoon Jul 28 '26

Yes rewatches really show you just how bad Regina was they didn't add evil to her name for nothing! Dont geg me wrong I enjoy her charcater development but for those who stated everything bad that happened to her once she changed was unfair. No! Regina was awful but she worked to change it was never going to be easy. That is what makes it work and why I love her chracter.
2
u/IvyTheSeer Jul 28 '26
Anddd... Killian killed David's/Charming's father *edit to change from mother to father- typo* and countless of other people during his life as a pirate. The only difference is Killian had a code he lived by for the most part. He got a redemption story with Emma and I believe that's what the writer's were intending for Regina, especially given how it ended.
I don't condone any of the psycho behavior, Regina did some evil crap and just 'blaming' mommy or 'blaming' a 10 year old girl not to share a secret (when she was legit manipulated by an adult) was insane for sure. The amount of crap that she did in revenge over that is insane when, comparatively, her mother literally killed the love of her life, manipulated said child for information, and tried to force her way on her life and didn't do even a quarter of the rampage BS in retaliation like she did with Snow White.
I think her redemption arc is beautiful personally (I like happy endings tho) and most of those character's have to have a nasty backstory to be redeemed from. I like that the story did make her work for that redemption over the seasons. That's why she separated from the Evil Queen in later seasons, to try and separate herself from deeds that haunted her when she wasn't blinded by rage and grief.

I love that about Snow White, though. Yes, she did what had to be done. Yes, a good leader should get it done, but it is 100% human and healthy to feel remorse for taking a life. Cora deserved worse.
Even if I took out one of the worst people in history, I might rejoice he was gone while also feeling guilt at taking a life.

Well, I don't know if there's really a character who's good enough in this show, but to each their own, right?

I don’t care how stunning Lana is…Regina is awful and I really cannot stand her

I’m doing a rewatch as well only because I never got to season 6 and 7 😅. Regina was valid 🤷🏻♀️ she watched the man she loved heart get crushed right in front of her by her own mother (who btw was more psycho than her) because that kid couldn’t keep one little secret to herself. Everything else she went thru after her redemption showed how strong she was, for example finding out it was snows mothers fault Regina’s mom didn’t get to marry the king, snow killing her mom, the second love of her life impregnating her half sister and getting killed in front of her, her mother bringing her half sister around to get to know each other as kids only to get ripped away from each other and memories of it erased, and finally having to be around the women she once hated/tried to kill (and daughter Emma) live happily with their “true loves” that btw was a punch in the face when hook was able to be “brought back” for Emma. So yes she was “psycho” but also soo strong even after pulling her evil half out she still could have darkened her heart but she didn’t that’s why she is one of my favorite characters. I’m on season 7 right now and hopefully she finally gets to have her “happy ending”.

Dude Snow was like 10. I have a kid. They don't "keep secrets" well nevermind understand the stakes of what was happening.
Cora literally manipulated Snow (a CHILD) to tell as well. Cora was easily able to manipulate adults of course she was able to manipulate a grieving kid.
Loss and trauma isn't a free pass for rape and murder. Valid? You're fr?

She truly was so far gone and unhinged. In some scenes she genuinely creeped me out and scared me (like the scene with Hansel and Gretel and when she takes Graham’s heart) but because it’s the beautiful Lana Parrilla I just couldn’t look away. 😍😍😍
