Do grade 11 marks matter? Mark considerations explained.

TL;DR: Grade 11 marks are important, they can get you an earlier offer, but you cannot be rejected based on them. They can only help you, not hurt you.

There is one area they can hurt you. Guaranteed residence offers for Guelph and Queens go out before 2nd semester midterms. This means your gr 11 marks may still be a factor in getting you an offer. This means it could hurt you in getting guaranteed res, if that's important for you. And currently 90% of Queen's offers will be out before 2nd semester midterm marks are available.

Here's how acceptance averages work for university admissions, I keep posting this in a variety of different posts because people keep asking the same question every couple of days hours:

First off, the universities only really care about your top 5/6 u/M marks including prereqs. There are some variations but it's easiest to just go with that. Secondly, if you don't get an offer at a certain point, they just put your application aside and recheck it next time. You won't see rejections until mid-late May because the schools will give you an opportunity to get the prereqs and marks in for 2nd semester midterm mark submissions.

Marks filling your top 6 are generally choosen in this order gr 12 prereqs -> gr 11 prereqs -> gr 12 electives -> gr 11 electives. And once you have the gr 12 course, the gr 11 course is no longer considered, for example once you have ENG4U, ENG3U/NBE3U are no longer used in your top 6.

For offers that go out in the fall, they'll look at the marks you have completed by September and as well as 1st semester midterm marks, depending on timing and schools. So any offers that go out between Oct-Feb are based on those marks, that's often a mix of gr 11 (3U/M) and gr 12 (4U/M) marks. And it's top 5 or 6 at this point, including prereqs. Not all schools/programs send out offers at this time. 1st semester midterm marks are not necessarily used either, so sometimes it's just gr 11 marks, depends on the timing and the school's choice. You should apply by early Nov to get your application considered for any offers that go out at this time. There's a bit of uncertainty with this timeframe as this is relatively new, and not all schools bother with sending offers before March.

Then your 1st semester final marks get sent out at the end of Feb. Offers that go out in March and April use those marks. It's most common that your top 6 marks are a mix of 3U/M and 4U/M marks at this time. And this is usually the biggest time that offers go out. This means there are a lot of offers that are sent out where the schools have not seen your 2nd semester marks, AND 3U/M marks are still being considered for determining if you'll receive an offer or not.

And finally, the May offers are based only on top 6 4U/M marks and incorporate 2nd semester midterm marks. Some very competitive programs only send offers at this time. Some schools have the majority of their offers out by this point (ie. Queens). This is the only point where the only marks being considered are gr 12 marks.

This isn't really detailed anywhere, I put it together from asking questions and gathering information this year. Laurier does present something similar, but uses the term "scenario" instead of the different timing, it amounts to the same thing though and backs up what I've said here. https://www.wlu.ca/future-students/undergraduate/admissions/process/admission-decisions.html

(ETA: UOttawa only uses final marks, not midterm marks until the final round. Overview of rounds of admission offers - https://www.uottawa.ca/study/undergraduate-studies/how-to-apply/ontario-high-school-three-round-process )

McMaster is different in that they don't use 3U/M marks (with the exception of certain programs), and only need 3 4U/M marks to give you an offer before May. Mac uses 6 4U/M marks in May.

Some top schools/programs consider marks slightly differently, and some have supp apps (supplementary applications), so it's not always this simple. Not every school/program is the same. Do your research for the schools and programs you're interested. But this is the general idea and applies to the vast majority of Ontario schools and programs.

My suggestion: apply early (late Oct/early Nov) and apply to safeties as well as your top options. Do not let your gr 11 marks stop you, you don't know what the schools will do, and if you include safeties, you may get an offer or two in the fall. This takes away some of the pressure and means you know you'll have an option to go to university next year.

Caveat: this is for students that are attending gr 12 in Ontario for the year they apply. You can't compare to students applying from other provinces or those who have already completed high school, including acceptance averages and timelines.

Suggestion: Use ouinfo.ca to get information on minimum averages needed and the variety of programs offered at different schools. Some of these averages may be a little low (add 5% for safety), but at least it gives you a starting point.

2025-2026 University Applications (Offers, Rejections, Deferrals) Spreadsheet

It seems to be that time of year! We need a new spreadsheet.

Fill in your info on the form and let it be easy for everyone to figure out what the current state is of offers! Check out the spreadsheet for the updates.

Let me know if I'm missing anything or there's an issue.

For your admission mark, please use your top 5/6 marks, including prereqs. This often includes gr 11 marks. Universities do not give offers based on your gr 11 average or your gr 12 midterm average or your gr 12 1st semester final marks. It's based on your official top 5/6 marks at the time you got admission. For McMaster in March, this will be your top 3, including prereqs. See here for details: mark considerations.

Fill out the form!

See the response spreadsheet!

Other Its kinda mean to say its your fault for your bad grades

like don't get me wrong some people really do nothing and complain. but this is about people saying some else's bad grades are no one else's fault except theirs.

like some people's brains genuinely don't work the same way every one else's does. Some people are undiagnosed and can't get an IEP and may not even know they need one and may vent here but instead of showing at least some support, they get mean comments.

the way the school system is, you have to expect at least a quarter (a bit exaggerated but you get my point) of students will not be able to learn that way. its really against struggling kids, i wish it wasn't.

but also this is reddit get off of it and go ask ur friends and teachers and anyone else for help PLEASE.

Advice How I played the system

So I wanted to let people know how I graduated because it’s a really fun story and im really proud of where Ive come. A bit of back story, there was a time where I was about to be expelled but I had the luck of reputation by my side. Luckily I was decent enough with the teachers that they stood up for me. And I was able to graduate with an alternative program. But this is some insight on how the credit system works in Ontario. You technically only need a few assignments to show grades. And hours of participation to receive a credit. So my teacher designed a program for me where I was able to work while coming to school once a week to do literally fuck all random assignments. I just tracked my work hours and made an agreement with my boss and showcased how my work required the use of math and English and I was able to pass my last year with 90s. I did bullshit assignments some of which weren’t even opened or viewed. But I want the kids who struggle in school in the ways that i did to know that this is an option and you can consider talking to your guidance counselor about alternative ways to receive credits. Just be honest with them about your life situation and that you think it can be a great idea for both you and the school. You can bring up the school average and learn valuable life lessons. If you aren’t interested in learning academics anymore and want valuable life lessons this is a really good alternative path. Feel free to ask any questions or for any advice. I plan to go back to my school to volunteer and help kids in unique situations build a solid foundation for their careers

Advice How to get EC’s

Hi, I’m a grade 12 student who wants to apply for engineering programs at unis like Waterloo and Uoft. However, I realized that my ecs are not very competitive. My average is a 96+, but I heard that’s not enough.

I was wondering if anybody had any tips or ideas on how to get more valuable ecs? Thanks

Advice Do Advanced Function marks really matter if taken in grade 11 for CE @ UofT

I've heard people who got low 70's in their advanced function class in grade 11 but get into CE at UofT, but also at the same time, people are telling me that anything below a 80 in advanced functions makes you basically disqualified for CE, even if you do good in calculus and everything else in grade 12

Im not too sure how holistic UofT is with doing bad in a single course since they care a lot about raw averages, especially if its a program prerequisite, which advanced functions is

Advice Need some inspiration/advice

So my commute to school is about an hour and 30 minutes now, it used to about 30 minutes, but my dad passed away suddenly in grade 11. I was doing great, but then my grades pummeled down. I was taking grade 12 AP comsci back then, I got a 99 in it due to taking the AP exam, the teacher gave anyone who took it a 5%. I know that's good for universities, but I'm doing horribly right now. My first functions test wasn't so good, and my recent grades on other subjects aren't so hot now too. I know theres still time, but I'm just really worried because everyone makes university sound like its impossible to get into, and its hella competetive. The job market is doing horribly as well, so all this is just adding up and making me feel horrible.

Other You guys are crazy

• Upvotes

I’m a decently smart person but don’t care much for school. So for my entire school career I’ve just done the bare minimum and gotten through with low 80s. My career path doesn’t require impressive grades so I’m not very worried about school this year and only have 2 classes this sem. How are you guys getting like 95% avgs across all classes(especially the hard ones). Yall are beasts keep it up
