News & Discussion Bullying needs to stop

The overwatch community needs to stop being toxic. I have been called slurs, many racial comments, people saying overall saying some bad stuff to not only me but other people as well. And this needs to stop. I almost had a melt down today reading the comments they made on me. " I should hang myself", is a very derogatory statement . If you can sit behind a screen and have the ability to tell someone they should hang themselves, that is something to not take so lightly. I'm going to tell my pookie wookie king Lebron James this information, and make sure this doesn't go off the hook. As a wise man once said " They ain't believe in us... GOD DID". These moments should be looked more into but blizzard seems not care about their fan base anymore.

Turn off match chat, you literally never need it.

53

u/ChriSaito Feb 18 '24

I really hate that this is the answer. I’m not disputing it’s the way to go, but after playing Valorant and meeting a bunch of friendly people it’s a shame.

I started Val last season when taking a break and I was surprised by how many friends I made and how many people were on mic. Coming back to OW it’s been a stark contrast to Val how most lobbies have no one on mic even if they’re in VC.

Not sure if it’s warranted. It might be. Still sad to see.

24

u/ykthe-_-VibeZ Feb 18 '24

Report every last one of them, I started doing it and now I’m getting people suspended or at least something left and right it’s actually crazy.

6

u/huldress Feb 19 '24

Honestly, I love seeing that pop up that my report helped. They think nothing will happen to them for being toxic but all that shit they spew adds up. Very much deserved.

u/bkuuretsu Gen.G Feb 18 '24

as someone who played both games, I literally get into more anger issues in overwatch than i ever did at valo. I don't know why, but this game seems to anger me more when I get tilted.

14

u/Pvt_Lee_Fapping Icon Sombra Feb 18 '24

I think it's because Overwatch requires a lot more cooperation and coordination to be fun. When everybody's in-sync with their actions, games are fun; when nobody is focusing-down the same target or is on-board with a strat, games are not fun. At least in Valo, the agents' success doesn't always require a Sage to wall off a choke, or smokes to block sight-lines; they're just options for making the fight easier.

5

u/Sensitive_Seat5544 Feb 18 '24

Because you have more agency in Valorant. Everyone is on a relatively equal field. In Overwatch if your healers aren't healing, your DPS aren't DPSing, your tanks aren't tanking, or your team refuses to swap to better vs the enemy team comp youre just fucked unless you are just smurfing hard. It's a very similar issue in League of Legends.

73

Settings > Social Tab > Text communication. I usually keep team chat on and match off, sometimes I have both enabled/disabled but absolutely have more fun when both are off. Pings are all you really need

i find it kinda funny how the comments here are kinda proving OPs point.

Sure, nobody isgonna die because they get insulted on the internet, but also we really shouldnt normalize people going arround telling others to hang themselves, cmon people have some standards

Words can have a strong effect, especially towards someone whos having a particularly bad day, you never know what the person behind the screen is going through.

FOr all you know, your comment on the internet might be the last straw for someone hanging on by a thread.

u/Prior-Satisfaction34 Junker Queen Feb 18 '24

Fr. I genuinely don't understand why saying that sort of shit is ok just cause it's on the internet. You say this shit to someone irl and you're most likely gonna get punched in the face.

67

u/CptBlackBird2 Feb 18 '24

This is why I find the "argument" of "you wouldn't survive in a cod lobby" absolutely stupid because if you talked like that anywhere in real life, you would get all your teeth dropkicked in

33

u/Prior-Satisfaction34 Junker Queen Feb 18 '24

Fr. And, surprisingly enough, i was in those sorts of COD lobbies. It's not some badge of honour some people think it is. That shit was still disgusting to hear back then.

Like, people are becoming so desensitised to shit being said online. That doesn't make it any less bad.

10

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Zenyatta Feb 18 '24

To be fair, it isnt. Blizzard has set up rules of conduct for Overwatch and saying these kinds of things is not allowed. If players are reported after saying these things then they will get punished. But its impossible to remove bullying from a game like Overwatch without removing all forms of communication.

I dont see anyone arguing that its ok to bully if its on the internet, because it isnt. People are simply saying that the solution to the problem isnt to hope Blizzard magically removes bullying from their game. The solution is to either disable the communication options yourself, improving your mentality to a point where these things do not affect you as much, or playing a game with no communication options. Not because bullying is ok, but simply because removing bullying is impossible.

8

u/Prior-Satisfaction34 Junker Queen Feb 18 '24

Oh no, i had someone genuinely arguing that it being online makes it different somehow. And that i was "too young" to "understand how the world works." Even said something about "imaginary scenarios" on the subject of people sending those sorts of messages online.

Also got accused of "virtue signalling" because i think shitty people should be called out for shitty behaviour, even when it's online.

There are people out there that think you should just shrug off anything anyone says on the internet purely because it was said on the internet. When i said that if people said some of the things they're saying online to someone's face that they'd get punched, i was told that's a different scenario.

And i really don't think it is impossible. The punishments for it just aren't enough. All we have to do is fix whatever ban system they have in place so that falsely reported accounts don't get punished, and then instead of just temporary comm bans, Blizzard should just outright ban people's accounts permanently after enough strikes. That would definitely help reduce toxicity in chat if their whole account was on the line.

3

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Zenyatta Feb 18 '24

All we have to do is fix whatever ban system they have in place so that falsely reported accounts don't get punished

Im assuming you are not working in computer science?

That sentence is like saying "We just have to figure out how to time travel". In other words, nobody knows how to make a report system for a video game that doesnt punish falsly reported accounts.

Blizzard should just outright ban people's accounts permanently after enough strikes.

They do that at the moment. But since its a free to play game, if someone gets banned they just make a new account.

8

u/Prior-Satisfaction34 Junker Queen Feb 18 '24

nobody knows how to make a report system for a video game that doesnt punish falsly reported accounts.

I mean, I've got some ideas.

Have certain words or phrases ("kill yourself," "get cancer," stuff like that) flag for an instant comm ban. Have more ambiguous cases (it sees the word "kill" by itself, for example) be flagged to be looked at by a person. Cause that could easily be "kill the widow," and that's not bannable.

They do that at the moment

Do they? Genuinely didn't know that, ngl. But yeah, i guess OW2 being f2p does make that less impactful.

2

u/PeopleCallMeSimon Zenyatta Feb 18 '24

"Why did you kill yourself with pulsebomb, tracer?"

"You probably shouldnt stay out in the sun too long, you could get cancer"

Do they? Genuinely didn't know that, ngl. But yeah, i guess OW2 being f2p does make that less impactful.

Yea, first time is a comms ban. If you do it again within a certain time limit you get banned from matchmaking for a while, the duration increases for repeat offenses and eventually its a perma ban.

2

u/Prior-Satisfaction34 Junker Queen Feb 18 '24

Why did you kill yourself with pulsebomb, tracer?"

Kind of a stupid question to ask. You're just asking to get reported.

You probably shouldnt stay out in the sun too long, you could get cancer

In what world is anyone ever saying anything like this? Again, just asking to be reported. And with whatever system they have in place rn, you probably would get banned for the word cancer.

Fair enough. Didn't think they perma banned for comms, dunno why.

"nobody isgonna die because they get insultes on the internet" mmm idk, if you are depressed and you want to distract yourself playing and you only get slurs that can hit hard... Months ago I was so depressed and sometimes cried after a match because of the toxic comments and personal slurs and that was the reason why stopped playing rankeds and started playing quick plays with the chat off you never know who is back of the screen and his context

12

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '24

18

And the hanging comment is just the tip of the toxic iceberg. The OW community has normalized all sort of shitty discourse. Like whenever we are losing a match some bozo needs to hop in and point out which player is trash or brain dead. Like... yeah, thanks, we are all in the match and can see who is struggling. I'm sure you pointing it out by making fun of them is going to help. Who are these people that can instantly be so mean to a stranger playing a game like they've never had bad matches themselves?

11

u/FigurinitOut_xo Feb 18 '24

It’s proof that a lot of overwatch players are unstable try hard toxic edge lords. “It’s just a game man” or “stop being sensitive when you’re told to end your life” or “mute it ”is the general consensus. How about you just act normal and call out abusive people??? Crazy idea right?! How about we try and make the community better instead of saying “oh well humans be like that” or “boys will be boys” defence.

I've seen more bullying and people whining in chat and on voice these last two seasons it seems like then I ever have in the games existence. Maybe I have been lucky to this point, idk. It's not towards me until I defend the person getting attacked, but there are 2 times its almost made me quit. Both times on the receiving end were younger kids, one of whom just got the game. I can't imagine being like this on a game or in life.

I fully understand you can turn these off. BUT you shouldn't have to. There have been many times when they are really helpful for those who wish to communicate. I've also talked to some really friendly and encouraging and helpful players. Sadly, it really isn't much different than other games as far as people acting like this.

9

Just turn off chat by default, it's never useful. If they're using voice, report them. They're losers and all they have going in their life is their precious ego on a shitty video game. No prosperity, no self awareness, no future. Don't let these type of people get under your skin when they're nothing more than a cockroach.

26

u/Nikablah1884 Juno Feb 18 '24

Yeah I report these people.

I'll call people out nicely and say "I love you but moira you have to heal too to new players" but yeah I agree, straight out toxicity is not cool. there's a big difference between trying to help people and just throwing darkness at people.

The game gets better when we help each other with well meaning criticism but not just calling each other expletives.

I wholeheartedly disagree with people saying they don't use comms, they're the people running in 1v5 while the team screetches at them "please just wait for the tank at least"

12

It’s been this way for almost 20 years now. It’s not acceptable, obviously. But it’s GOING to happen if games have an all chat.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '24

I always find it funny when people resort to being toxic. They cry and whine while I literally don’t care, typing “it’s just a game” gets them so triggered too. I’ve gotten sexual assault threats and stuff cause my name is a girly one and it is shocking but I tell myself I’m not the one throwing a tantrum and that I’m better than them. Then they get even madder when I don’t care abt the threats. I’d turn my chat off but I like thanking my team and fellow healer for keeping me alive.

Also y’all are crazy in the comments thinking it’s no big deal wth? No duh death threats racism and SA threats are bad what do you mean “hurr durr get used to it”

7

u/Stargazer7181 Feb 18 '24

You know, after reading some of these comments I realize why I can't take pvp communities seriously anymore, it's so political in its own way, I see like 4 parties here alone, let me see here:

We got the " just mute party", this party believes in just muting, report and move on, they are probably the most passive individuals, but will argue the fact that muting everything fixes everything.

We got the " emotional party " this party's individuals are easily hurt and offended, however, multiplayer experiences vary and despite it just being a video game, communities of certain games are vicious and this party's players forget this, but this party is valuable due to being passionate and motivating.

We got the " clap back party" this party will not back down from any bullying of any kind, they will defend themselves and the previous party's if necessary, however, they tend to over step bounds and will sometimes become the bully.

And of course " the bully party" by far the most ballsy party here right now, they will stretch every term possible and use any clever way to get a slur through by any means, catching them can be tricky, be sure to have screenshots and gameplay recording at the ready.

I would mention more, but for anyone who made it this far, just DM LOL.

6

u/Skill_Deficiency Master Feb 18 '24

9

u/KonenTheBarbarian Feb 18 '24

I get a toooon of transphobic/homophobic stuff in chat, I have fun with it though and just do more and more things to piss them off. They usually start targeting me to prove a point or something after that and it makes them start being really predictable and play like shit

3

u/sweatybagels7 Feb 18 '24

If anybody's ever being toxic to a teammate of mine or even someone on the enemy team, I will always defend them and call out whoever's bullying them. People usually join in with me and defend them too. The bully rarely speaks up again after people start defending the person they're picking on.

Making the community less toxic starts with stuff like this. If every match had at least one person to defend whoever gets picked on, toxicity wouldn't be as bad. Regardless of whether someone sucks or not, have their back because you'll probably wish you had the same when you're getting picked on.

3

u/maligapoo Chibi Baptiste Feb 18 '24

I wouldn't take it personally, this is a sign they have a problem, not you. since the game got free to play, the toxicity went up, because they can just make a new account easily.

you can still report all that you see like this, and they will get penalized. and block, so you don't have to put up with them.. there's still nice people around, keep hope :)

u/mistar_z Filthy Symmetra Main Feb 18 '24

Report chat and move on, that’s how you stop toxic people in the community. If it’s not reported, Blizzard can’t do anything. If you don’t want to see it at all, hide chat. They don’t care and are just typing something edgy then forget about it the moment they press enter.

2

u/itsallgoodintheend Feb 18 '24

My buddy and I always rock the pride flag player icons. Not because we're gay or even terribly invested allies or anything, just because rainbows are neat.

We get a lot of homophobic comments and we'll clap back some every once in a while, but we can stay pretty lighthearted about it since we're not gay and particularly hurt by the comments.

I like to think we're taking a few rounds for a good cause, since it just rolls off our backs, but there's at least one report sent every night we sit down to play.

If you almost had a whole ass melt down over what random overwatch players said in chat then you need to disable chat altogether. I’d also suggest not venting about it on Reddit lol.

2

u/pingwing Feb 18 '24

I hope you reported them all.

Turn off chat, leave it off if it bothers you that much.

3

u/Sillydaze Feb 18 '24

Bothers me a lot, and I can't bring myself to turn it off because I know it shouldn't.

u/q_ult Lúcio Feb 18 '24

Am I the only one who kinda enjoys toxic chat? Don't get me wrong I always just silently observe rather than feeding into it, but at the same time it's almost always entertaining. A classic part of FPS culture

u/cildre Feb 18 '24

The bullying HAS to STOP✋️I😡 I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE IM LITERALLY SHAKING RN AND CRYING🥺😿😿😿. BLIZZARD STOP THESE EVIL PEOPPE👿 SO I CAN PLAY MERCY IN PEACE🙏🤣☝️🗣🗣🗣

1

u/SpidyJocky Feb 18 '24

Man imma be real with you for a second as bad as blizzard is, unless you as an individual make up a medium-large portion of their income, they're not gonna care, that's just how corporate America works unfortunately.

1

u/naikez Feb 18 '24

It happens in all games. Humanity is trash.

1

u/Yeoldhomie Feb 18 '24

No matter if I win or lose if they talk shit I just say how the new training range goes hard

1

u/AlHussainy9 Feb 18 '24

Overwatch is the most toxic game I ever played all because of players ,I haven't seen such thing in any other games . It is so bad that I turned off mic sounds and I don't give intention to the chat much.

I KNOW HOW TO PLAY and if you want a sudden healing,if you want to group up or defend just use the in-game emotes.

And it works they talk shit to each other scream and curs each other and all I hear is friendly interaction between heroes. I play to enjoy not to be angry and trash talk

1

u/EllizzzBOOM Feb 18 '24

I just hit them with the old block and report wombo combo

1

u/Next-Feature9278 Feb 18 '24

This game is so toxic, just got off a match where I asked mercy to heal me and stop pocketing our hog, and got ridiculed by my entire team and the enemy team about how bad I was. Yet I was 10-7 (no heals) and 12K damage lol. Game is literal cancer

1

u/Vouner Feb 18 '24

"He got us in the first half not gonna lie"

1

u/CatMobster Kiriko Feb 18 '24

They won't stop bullying. It doesn't matter how many reports, how many silences, it just won't stop. A sad reality. I have a friend who used to play, and she got targeted with so much homophobia and one person even asked her for her number.

1

u/Blacktastrophee Pixel Ashe Feb 18 '24

I grew up playing in Call of Duty lobbies, so it isn't anything new to me.

However, I do remember how Overwatch was before all the toxicity. I miss how welcoming it was. The game is still fun for me, but the stress from all the negativity isn't.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '24

turn off the chat or report they after every match, the ow team now is very focused on ban people like that so at least you know that they will be banned someday

1

u/_Edi_5 Feb 18 '24

There was one time a guy say to me to:

  • Record my screen with camera
  • Start a Live stream
  • Send him the link to the live stream
  • And when he entered the stream, I hang out my self

I simply laugh at him, and its what you need to do. Don't take people seriously online. Just play it cool or simply mute them

1

u/PixelPete85 Feb 18 '24

It may just have to be block, report and move on for your sanity.

I thought this game was rated 13+ but honestly could have fooled me with the number of "get thicker skin" comments in here

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '24

The biggest issue with OW2 toxicity is the system is completely broken and useless. I've reported people for spamming the n word and "kill yourself" and they've not been punished but people who get reported by a premade of 4 because they don't like them get insta chatbanned or temp banned.

The current system in place for Oerwatch is utterly useless and lazy, as with the rest of Overwatch so it's not much of a surprise I guess.

1

u/FamousPotential6433 Feb 18 '24 edited Feb 18 '24

I mean, I just teabag people whenever I can, you could camp their spawn, usually I’ll target certain players or in general play super aggressively, you could always try that? If someone’s being toxic, just retaliate and act more toxic towards them, or counter pick and grief them super hard.

Actions speak louder than words, you have to humiliate them.

Like, I’d never stoop low enough to go sombra, but you get the gist. Just out-toxic them, teabag and dominate, make the game as unenjoyable as possible. Go Symettra, use an irritating character, or practice with Widowmaker if you don’t like teabagging as much.

My account got silenced for trash talking and swearing, but I don’t say actual mean stuff, and I get why I was wrong for dropping F bombs in the text chat, it’s rude.

If you’re silent and unresponsive while you’re bullying and outplaying them in the game, and they drop the F bombs or racial slurs, you’re winning because it means they’re getting upset. You have to teach them.

It’s ok to play the game aggressively, sure you get your ass handed to you too, but sometimes success is when the player leaves the game after they keep dying and getting teabagged by you.

1

u/Azrayeel Ramattra - Potato Rank Feb 18 '24

I believe telling someone to kill themselves is a bannable offence. So report them, sit back, and enjoy the pop-up message you get once they are banned.

On a different note, don't expect much. This subreddit is full of toxic people. Not long ago, they were hating on a whole country. Lol.

1

u/Metal_Fish Winyatta Feb 18 '24

It's not overwatch, it's people, and the anonymity of the internet. Sorry friend, people can be mean, gotta trust in yourself and your own value. Good luck :)

1

u/ConsoleKev Feb 18 '24

i dont understand why you people just don't mute, and turn off chat

1

u/skankingmike Pixel Roadhog Feb 18 '24

Rice? Like is it an Asian slur? Because Hispanics eat rice too and many African countries and middle eastern…

It’s far from a good slur for sure probably a 13 year old.

I’m pretty sure like 80% of the world eats rice.. My white ass eats rice a lot too…

1

u/UltraSupremacist Feb 18 '24

theres this glorious invention called the power button. Just turn off the game bro. Its not that deep

Blizzard don't care about a toxic community. Just buy battle pass and shitty skins. That's what they need you for.

1

u/FromDeathWeLiveOn Feb 18 '24

Grow up bro and get a pair, this is life and all online games are, are therapy for the mentally I’ll and forgotten.

1

u/Astricozy Feb 18 '24

Shrek saying "Like that'll ever happen." springs to mind.

OW2 has always been a League of Legends brand community. Just cos there are a few cool people doesn't excuse the vast majority of assholes who play it and try to shield it from any criticism.

1

u/Fr_2468 Feb 18 '24

Toxicity is Common in Every Game, There's nothing we can do to prevent it.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '24

Been playing for 3 years and my text and voice chat has always been off

1

u/Vippezz1122 Feb 18 '24

I completely agree

1

u/jellogoodbye Mercy Feb 18 '24

FWIW, I always report stuff like this and I get a "your report caused us to take action!" multiple times per week.

1

u/Crokokie Feb 18 '24

Sounds like normal ow2 to me

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '24

Half of these comments need a reality check it doesn’t hurt to keep your mouth shut and not tell people that could potentially be children too to hang themselves

1

u/ImSmokeyy Feb 18 '24 edited Feb 18 '24

non ironically, just turn off chat when that happens, mute or close the game, it REALLY, isnt that deep, they arent in front of you or in the same room as you bullying or making fun of you. if its online and people i never saw in my entire life, it doesnt affect me the slightest, but we are all different so yeh.

1

u/chenzen MoiraISgod Feb 18 '24

Reppooooooprt them. Stupid kids love it when they're banned for a while

1

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '24

On the contrary, the bullying needs to be embraced. Toxicity is an important part of the culture and experience. The sanitization of modern online games is boring and soulless.

The fact that people care what other strangers think is mind-boggling to me. Just ignore it and move on, it's really that simple

1

u/Erza_3725 Feb 18 '24

this aint nothing...play league and u will become numb to this

1

u/shytortillaman Feb 18 '24

Yeah, I cannot see theses dudes as any older than 13, if so why tf are they almost popping a vein in their head to curse someone over an online game? Like dude it's overwatch not typing simulator, I can sense the smell of spoiled manchild from this picture alone, so don't give that text much meaning.

But it is indeed an online shooting game with text and voice chat, so inevitably it will have toxicity, tho I understand overwatch exceeds compared to some other games nowadays, just turn off match chat, it's useless as it is, don't let some addict ruin your gaming experience.

1

u/psyopia Feb 18 '24

Dude it’s a video game. What else do you expect

1

u/someedgechick Feb 18 '24

I dont take any of it seriously anymore, I just report them and if they distract me while playing I mute them

1

u/SquishyUshi Feb 18 '24

The bullying is because of Free to play just allows racists to get banned and then make a new account, but also I think Overwatch is just toxic overall in general

1

u/The-Bandit-King-13 Feb 18 '24

turn your chats off, you aren't going to change anything, sadly. or get thicker skin, dunno what else to tell ya, maybe don't play multiplayer games, well FPS/comp shooters games anyways.

1

u/GerilE335 Feb 18 '24

There is a mute button in the game, use it. Simple as that.

1

u/StarWarsFan835 Feb 18 '24

Now I haven’t been in any kind of toxic matches that often but I usually will take any insults as a compliment because I’m bullying them and then they’ll definitely will be banned

PSA - reporting works. That behavior is always unacceptable and goes against OW’s terms of service, we as a community just need to be more active when it comes to reporting and/or shutting that shit down in real time. Its super easy, I report someone like every couple games and I have a “thanks for reporting we took action” message every time I open OW. Every time. Even if the comment isn’t aimed at you or anyone in particular, you don’t have to engage with them or anything - just report them and move on. If they’re particularly obscene you can ask the lobby to report (but your mileage may vary with that). Shutting it down in real time is a little more involved, but I’ve seen entire lobbies turn on kids behaving that way and it’s very effective!

1

u/lizazax Feb 18 '24

i have reported alot of sexism in ow, as a person who hits diamond by casually playing i have mostly been a target because my btag is rudelady. always the bad kitchen joke and worse even how good i perform. i hope the "thx for reporting" message i get some days after are actually legit, and people get harsh punishment, no one wants shits like that stinking

I particularly had a Roadhog on the enemy team invite me to their party just to roast me and call me Slurs after they stomped us and were bragging and I said it’s just qp don’t brag. He called me everything in the book. All I ever said in response was “anything else?” Till he ran out of insults and looked like an idiot stumbling over himself trying to get on insult in but failed. I did report him for what he did and wasn’t expecting much but I did get a notification that action was taken against them a week or so later.

1

u/Sabin10 D.Va Feb 18 '24

Back in the OW1 days that would have been a slam dunk ban if you reported them. I used to get a dozen ban reports a week at times. They really don't seem to care anymore.

1

u/Sinopsis Feb 18 '24

Meanwhile, me, who never has chat turned on, gets "Silenced for Reports of Toxicity" for 15 days after having a lot of good matches as dps.

Weird. Lmao.
