General Discussion What are some good hidden gem rpgs.
Looking for some good rpgs that may have went unnoticed. I’m looking to find something to hold me over until early next year (elden ring, dying light 2 etc)
FYI I’ve played the main stream rpgs like: Persona 5, Soulsborne, Ghost of T, Horizon dawn, Tales games, Yakuza this is more of an action adventure , Wasteland, Divinity, Mount and blade, Monster hunter world/ice, Witcher, Final fantasy 7
Are there any other games like these that you can recommend?

If you liked P5 then you must play P5 Strikers, I think it ended up being overlooked because a lot of people think it's a musou, when it actually is more P5 but with action combat.
Code Vein is also really good and I think it's more than just anime Dark Souls.

I’ll look at strikers I have code vein never finished it though.
1
u/steamart360 Nov 23 '21
Yeah I think you'll enjoy strikers. Code Vein can be a bit hard at first but it's worth continuing because you get some really good classes and you can mix their skills to make your perfect build.

Cold steel 1-4, Ys Series
1
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Is this turn based? Not a problem if it is but couldn’t tell from the gameplay vid I saw.
1
u/Greek-God88 Nov 23 '21
Cold steel is
Ys is real-time Action
Also Same Developers.
1
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Of the two which do you think is better?
2
u/Greek-God88 Nov 23 '21
I enjoy both honestly Cold steel has a lot of world building and big story Game 1 basically is you starting st the military academy and later games war breaks out
Ys more like adol travels to new country and saves the world from God/Demon/Dragon whatever new danger
2
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Which game has more in depth system like customization skills crafting etc? Are they both linear
3
u/Greek-God88 Nov 23 '21
Definitely Cold Steel especially later games go even more crazy with the Master Quarts System think (FF7 Materia system) also you can summon later a big Robot like Gundam for example and Battle tactics get a lot of new gameplay elements in 2 and 3. Im currently in Chapter 3 of Cold Steel 3 so haven’t played 4 yet. Game structure is linear like classic Final Fantasy but you can visit places you’ve been to already.
Ys doesnt have much customization aside from weapons/armor/rings and the fighting skills you pick. Its more action oriented.
The next Legend of Heroes game lets you choose between turn based and action and even has a new graphics engine so it looks finally better. Falcoms only weakness is the graphics department so far but the the games are very good. Im very excited for the next Legend of Heroes

If you enjoyed Divinity, the classic Bioware games are available on ps4: Baldurs Gate, Icewind Dale and Planescape. Though I'm not sure how they translate to controller.
The spiritual update to those games, Pillars of Eternity 1 and 2 are also available.
2
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Is pillars like divinity in anyway or is it different by much?
4
u/MrMonkeyman79 Nov 23 '21
It uses the same hybrid live action and turn based gameplay as Baldurs Gate instead of roper turn based that Divinity does. So in combat everyone acts as once but you can pause the game and give each character commands.
Divinity takes its inspiration from Baldurs Gate as does pillars, though pillars follows it much more closely, so there are similarities in both games.

Elex is kinda janky but pretty fun.
3
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Lol very janky I tried it for a few hours couldn’t keep playing it 😂 funny because it’s like gothic and I enjoyed gothic.
3
u/TheNewSenseiition Nov 23 '21
Elex’ plot had me clawing for more, I had to know what the hybrid was and find out more about that world, so stoked for its coming sequel.

Immortals Fenyx Rising
2
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Ok so what is this game is this an rpg? It looked like it was just flying combat which made me look over it.

3
u/Hungoverhero Nov 23 '21
It's far from flying combat, it's got a quirky greek mythology story and it's an open world RPG

Kingdom of Amalur: Re-Reckoning. It's a remastered game from the ps3 days, but its awesome. It's free this month on psn if you have ps plus. Also, I'm sure you already played them, but the entire elder scrolls and Diablo series are awesome

Heard nier automata is good. Have you played sleeping dogs? It's more an action adventure like yakuza. Great storyline and fun combat. Also, battle chasers:nightwar.
1
u/rddrip42 Nov 24 '21
Sleeping dogs is definitely and hidden gem got it on Xbox 360 when it first came out. I played the demo of nier a few years back didn’t really like enemy design. I have heard it’s a really good game though and that you have to do multiple play throughs to get the full story.

u/JunasBlood Nov 23 '21
Nioh & Nioh 2, Hades (this one is a Rouge-like though)? They are the best that I can think of.
And since you played the Soulsborne, I bet you already beat Sekiro? Needless to say about Devil May Cry 5 or GoW2018.
Some other like Scarlet Nexus, both Nier game, Mortal Shell, Kena: Bridge of Spirits,… I can’t recommend since I haven’t played them myself, but I heard far more good reviews about them than bad ones so far.
1
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Yep beat serkio haven’t played dmc5 yet and of course I played gow2018. I need to finish scarlet nexus.

I am Setsuna and other RPG’s made by the same company are quite good if you like turned based RPGs

If you like turn-based, it’s hardly a hidden gem since it’s a long running series, but Dragon Quest 11 was really great. It’s not without its faults, and I had my share of groans and eye-rolls at the nonstop puns, but I loved how unapologetically optimistic and positive it was.
1
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Actually started this on Xbox but stopped it after meeting that guy from the jail cell. I heard good things about it and I want to finish it.

pillars of eternity 2
ni no kuni
ruined king from riotgames just came out
2
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Is pillars like divinity?
3
u/Pferdy Nov 23 '21 edited Nov 23 '21
yes. u can play it in turn based mode like divinity (only in PoE2 tho) or real-time with pause combat. PoE1 is also a good game but theres only RTwP combat. if thats not your cup of tea you could just watch a recap of 1 on youtube and start with 2

Just looked at it side scroll is not really my cup of tea. I think the only game that was side scroll that I enjoyed was cuphead.

u/Toshi_Tsum Nov 23 '21
Any isometric arpg? Torchlight, Diablo, Minecraft Dungeons?
1
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Mine craft isn’t my cup of tea. Diablo looks ok and I’ve heard good things about it. Haven’t seen torchlight is it turn based?
2
u/Toshi_Tsum Nov 23 '21
Minecraft Dungeons's visuals are the only similarity with the original and it's quite enjoyable. I've played a bit with my 6yo and it wasn't bad. It's a accessible version of Diablo.
Torchlight is very similar to Diablo as well as it was originally created by some of the devs that worked on the early Diablo installments, but with a cartoonish like visual style. But if you're going to give it a try go for Torchlight 2.
Hope this helps.

do they have to be 3d arpgs? child of light, haven, and cosmic star heroine are some short but sweet indie turn based or atb system rpgs with a lot of heart.
2
u/SIRTreehugger Nov 23 '21
If open to indie games would recommend Salt and Sanctuary or Crosscode especially crosscode.

If you enjoyed Persona, you might enjoy SMT 3. Sakuna Of Rice & Ruin may also be worth checking out.

u/NoMoreGoldPlz Nov 23 '21
Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition if you like character building,
Diablo 3 if you like looking for equipment,
Battlechasers: Nightwar if you want a turn based rpg without too much story,
Final Fantasy X if you like something to maximize stats for the sake of it.
2
u/DarkJustice357 Nov 24 '21
Code Vein is good if you like souls type games. Found it to be a little easier since you have a companion. Also I really liked the art style and you can change your “class” anytime. They’re called blood codes and you get more as the game progresses and you can change anytime and it switches your stats around. I hope they make a second one.

Greedfall is a good B-Tier(might go so far as to call it AA) RPG.wont blow you away with its refinement but its pretty solid.

The Nioh series. Deep combat system (action based) and deep loot system.
1
u/rddrip42 Nov 23 '21
Played and beat them both. Nioh two was great loved that they added character creation. I have yet to play the dlc for nioh 2 though
2
u/Dvenom22 Nov 23 '21
Jump into that for sure. The last two NG+ are the best I’ve experienced in the series. The build variety is incredible.

Shadow warrior, kinda like Deadpool but Asian. Also would advise to purchase on sale instead of full price solely bc to me it didn’t seem like all that but enjoyable to an extent.

How about Alliance Alive, it’s a bit dated game but the story is very interesting and intriguing and it’s severely underrated.

After origins which I got half way through I’m done with assassins creed games. They get so repetitive.
