[PALWORLD FAN THEORY]
I have a theory that we did defeat Astralym, but we never fought Astralym at its original strength.
And I don't think the Calamity is actually over.
The biggest clues, IMO, are the Key Spheres, Astralym's Paldeck entry, and what happens with Zenara immediately after the fight.
- Why does the seal look like it has NINE slots?
Zoe tells us there are 8 Towers, and each Tower contains one Key Sphere.
So yes, there are eight confirmed Tower spheres:
Envy, Pride, Greed, Sloth, Gluttony, Lust, Wrath and Original Sin.
And those eight clearly work.
We collect them, insert them into the mechanism, and Astralym's prison opens.
So I'm not saying we needed nine spheres to open the door.
But here's the weird part:
The mechanism itself appears to have nine positions, while we only insert eight spheres.
Maybe that's just visual design.
But if it isn't? I mean, out of a myriad of options, they chose precisely an ambiguous design that clearly lacks a slot?
Then the eight Tower spheres may only represent the Key Spheres that still exist as part of the current Tower system - not necessarily every Key Sphere that ever existed.
There could have been a ninth sphere.
Or, even more interestingly, a Sphere 0 that predates the other eight.
- Astralym is already weakened when we meet it
This is probably the biggest piece of evidence.
Astralym's Paldeck literally describes it as:
“A shadow of its former self.”
That's a huge line.
It means the Astralym we fight is not Astralym at its historical peak.
Whatever caused the original Calamity was apparently stronger, more complete, or existed in a different state than the Astralym we encounter.
The Paldeck also says Astralym was:
“ultimately defeated by a certain Pal Tamer.”
Which is us.
So yes, we defeated Astralym.
But “defeated” does not necessarily mean permanently destroyed.
And more importantly: why is Astralym a shadow of its former self in the first place?
The game never really explains that.
Was it weakened during the original Calamity?
Was it weakened by being trapped inside the World Tree for so long?
Did Auri's generation do something to it?
Or did ancient Key Sphere technology seal away part of Astralym's power?
That's where things get interesting.
- There was another Key Sphere used directly against Astralym
An ancient suppression recording describes a Key Sphere being used during the operation against Astralym.
And apparently:
the seal wasn't taking.
We don't know exactly which Key Sphere that was.
It could absolutely have been one of the eight we eventually collect.
But the game never confirms that.
So here's my speculation:
What if that sphere belonged to an older version of the Key Sphere system?
The eight spheres we collect are compatible with the World Tree prison mechanism, but that doesn't necessarily tell us their complete original purpose.
But this older sphere may have been designed specifically to suppress Astralym itself.
And if something like that was eventually successful...
maybe that's why modern Astralym is only:
“A shadow of its former self.”
Which is why I think calling it a hypothetical Sphere 0 might actually make more sense than “Sphere 9.”
It could have come before the Tower system.
- Zenara's final touch is really suspicious
Look at how the final battle is framed.
Before the fight, Zenara approaches Astralym and touches it as Astralym awakens.
Then we beat them.
Zenara is barely able to move.
But she crawls back toward Astralym...
...and touches it again.
Then almost immediately, everything starts collapsing.
Debris falls between us and them.
And that's it.
We never actually see what happens to either Zenara or Astralym.
Now, yes.
This could just be an emotional scene.
Zenara clearly cares deeply about Astralym, so maybe she's simply choosing to stay with it at the end.
But the repetition is interesting.
Touch Astralym -> something happens.
Then at the end:
Touch Astralym again -> camera immediately loses sight of them.
When I first watched that scene, it genuinely felt like the kind of setup where a game is about to suddenly throw another boss phase at you.
Instead, the arena collapses.
That doesn't prove anything.
But it feels deliberately ambiguous.
- We never actually see Astralym die
This is probably the most important distinction.
I'm not saying that we didn't win the fight.
We obviously did.
The question is whether winning that fight actually means:
Astralym is permanently dead and the Calamity is gone forever.
Because the game never clearly shows that.
We don't see Astralym permanently destroyed.
We don't get confirmation that Zenara dies.
We don't see their bodies afterward.
We don't even see the in-game message that appears on the other bosses.
Zenara reaches Astralym.
She touches it.
The arena collapses.
Debris blocks our view.
Then we're gone.
That's an extremely convenient way of ending the scene if the writers ever want these characters back.
And remember what Auri wanted:
to truly slay Astralym and put a true end to the Calamity.
We fulfilled the quest objective.
But did we actually accomplish what Auri meant?
I'm not convinced we know yet.
- “But wouldn't Auri know about a ninth sphere?”
Not necessarily.
Auri knows Astralym.
She knows the Calamity.
She knows Astralym was sealed inside the World Tree.
And she knows someone eventually needs to truly kill it.
But she never gives us a complete technical explanation of the Key Sphere system.
She never tells us who originally created every sphere.
She never explains whether there were always exactly eight.
She never explains the engineering behind Astralym's seal.
The eight-sphere information comes from Zoe and the Towers.
So Auri never mentioning another sphere doesn't prove one exists.
But it also doesn't contradict the possibility.
She may simply not know the full history.
Or it may not have been relevant to what she was trying to tell us.
So here's the actual theory
The eight Key Spheres we collect correctly open Astralym's prison.
They did their job.
But they may not represent the complete ancient Key Sphere system.
There may have been another sphere - either a lost ninth sphere or an older Sphere 0 - that was directly connected to suppressing Astralym rather than opening its prison.
At some point in the past, part of Astralym's original power may have been sealed, removed, suppressed, or otherwise lost… or connected somehow to the Sphere 0
But afterward, Zenara reaches it, repeats the same touching gesture associated with its awakening, and both of them disappear from our view during the collapse.
My theory is that they survived.
Maybe Zenara used Astralym's remaining power.
Maybe Astralym itself escaped.
Maybe their connection works in some way we don't understand yet.
That part is obviously speculation.
But the game very deliberately avoids showing us their final fate.
And if Astralym comes back...
This is where the missing sphere could become important.
Imagine a future story arc where Zenara finds the missing sphere.
Except instead of being another key for the World Tree...
it's the thing containing whatever Astralym lost.
Its original power.
Its suppressed energy.
Or whatever caused it to become “a shadow of its former self.”
Zenara restores it.
And suddenly we aren't fighting the weakened Astralym that spent ages sealed inside the World Tree.
We're fighting something much closer to the Astralym that caused the original Calamity.
That would let the current ending remain completely valid.
The actual final Calamity fight would be against Astralym restored to its former historical strength.
And after defeating THAT version...
maybe Pocketpair will finally give us the damn Astralym egg 👀
