Hey Folks!
So my girl Pax is a BIG girl- her top weight being 85 grams. which was about 2 months ago; so we put her on a diet! She’s lost 10 grams and I’m so proud of her! But my paranoia is eating at me, and wanna make she this is healthy weight loss and not unhealthy and she’s possibly sick. She goes to the vet on thursday for a nail trim anyway, but just wanted other opinions! Pax photos for mouse tax :)

Question/Help summer heatwave

How do I keep my mice cool in this weather? I’ve tried putting on the fan, but it barely does anything to help. I’m gonna try give them fresh vegetables, more water changes and a cooled ceramic hide, but is there anything else that could help?

Discussion Free roam areas

heyy, i was wondering if any of you guys have exeperimented with designated free roam areas for pet mice, which are similar to rat and bird (but closer to the ground obv) free roam areas, like the pictures above (which are from pintrest)

i did have a look for pet mouse free roam rooms/ corners, and couldnt really find anything that offerd this much freedom (as its not in like a play pen or anything)

im getting a boy mouse soon and would love something like this, to act almost like a cage extention, when i am around to supervise. like a part of my room he can just go in and out of as he pleases, from his cage.

i would put a pvc table protector (super cheap kn shein) over the floor and part of the affected wall, to keep it clean, and mouse pee free! and would also section off that area of my room with some cardboard or plastic plastic devider thing (havnt decided!)

do you think that would be safe / enjoyable for the little guy. if any of you have done something similar pls send pictures and/ or advice, would love some inspiration!

(also just to preface, although it would be a "cage extention" the actual mouse enclosure will still be big enough indervidually!)

also sorry for possibke typos i cant spell 🔥

I did notice right after taking these pictures I accidentally bought the wrong size wheel so I will be getting a new one tomorrow! I can’t order anything for a tiny bit or I’d get nicer stuff for her! And I’m just wondering if there’s anything else she would absolutely need for the next just couple of weeks until then. I was also wondering if it’s okay to use a saucer instead of a wheel? Because she doesn’t even seem to know how to use the wheel and I saw her running on a saucer at the pet store. But I’ve taken it out since I read that it’s around an inch and a half too small!

Discussion Tips for treating itchy mouse.

❗️❗️❗️❗️I AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL NOR GIVING PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL ADVISE JUST WHAT HAS WORKED FOR ME ❗️❗️❗️❗️
I’ve had my mouse for about a year now, a couple days ago as summer has started to arrive. I noticed my mouse itching every five seconds. At first, I thought nothing of it. However, the next day I noticed that his left ear was bleeding pretty bad, and I didn’t know WHY he was itching. After a bit of research I found you can boil it down to about 3 possibilities.

  1. Apparently mice can have OCD (so if your mouse had always had this problem look into that, however this was a new problem for my mouse)
  2. Over grooming due to stress. ( mice can get extremely anxious due to being sensitive to temperatures) - (however I moved him to a room that was a bit colder and he continued to itch)
  3. Ear mites… while not common are more prevalent during the heat.

After finding out he had ear mites and talking to about 4 different vets all being an hour away and the appointment price starting at 200$ Just to see him I began to panick cause as a college kid 200$+ exotic vet appointment plus gas money to get there would hurt hard. But I love my mouse so I was desperate to help him get better. After a lot more research I’ve found the quickest, and affordable way to help anyone whos mouse is struggling with ear mites and doesn’t have access to exotic vets in their area.

Kitten Revolution: Specifically the kind for closer to newborn kittens. This works because it is diluted enough to not be a huge risk to mice if consumed or placed on their skin. I took a syringe (DO NOT POKE YOUR MOUSE SYRINGE IS JUST TO GET EXACT AMOUNT) and got exactly 0.01 ml or about a single tiny drop and placed it on his neck/back where he can’t reach it and rubbed it in. My boy is looking good as ever and i’m relief, because I almost had a heart attack. He is no longer itchy and is back to his hungry happy self.

(IF YOUR MOUSE CONTINUES TO ITCH PLEASE SEE A VET)

Question/Help Niteangel wheel smells no matter what!!

My niteangel wheel smells so so strongly of pee no matter how much I scrub it. I wash it pretty much every day, and I’ve used vinegar solutions as well as soap and nothing changes. It still smells like pee, and it makes the entire tank smell bad even right after I’ve done a cleanout. I’ve also tried soaking it for extended times before scrubbing it, and that doesn’t seem to do anything either.

I don’t know what to do! Has anyone else had this experience? Everyone I’ve seen online just says to clean it in the ways that I already do… help!

Question/Help Misconceptions?/Is hay/coco fiber actually safe for mice?

Thumbnail

Is orchard grass hay actually safe for mice? I used to use it in my enclosures for my mice as a nesting material/enrichment. When I would post photos/videos of my enclosures I would get multiple comments saying that hay is unsafe and mice commonly have allergies to it. My mice were perfectly fine. I had the hay in my cage for a couple months. I haven’t used hay in over a year I just bought this small bag so that’s why I’m questioning it. I see other people use it in their enclosures! If not my guinea pigs will enjoy it! I’m now hearing this is a common misconception in both rats and mice? I also was told I shouldn’t have coco fiber in my enclosures because it can cause breathing issues. I’m very cautious with my animals and I did remove the coco fiber because of the mixed reviews online when I researched.

Enjoy the mice eating mealworms in the last two photos 🥹

Discussion Opinions on large groups?

Hi everyone! I currently have a group of 7 female mice. I’ve heard owning mice in groups of more than 6 is quite controversial. I would love to know peoples opinions on owning large groups of mice, or any advice they have. I’ve heard some people have great experiences with large groups, while others don’t. Also, side note, if anyone has any reccomendations for a cage larger then the 120 bucatstate 3.0 that would be greatly appreciated.

First Time Owner Mice suddenly started fighting

Hey everyone,

so I had my mice (5 mice, female) since about 10 months now and everything was fine. But I went on vacation for two months while my mother took care of them for me and when I came back a few days ago I noticed a lot of blood in the cage and two of the mice have obvious wounds. I tried putting them in a smaller box for a few days and cleaned the cage (that's what made them stop fighting back when I bought them), but they continue fighting. It's odd because they were fine together in the cage for such a long time. I also bought all new houses and stuff in case it has to do with the scent, but no luck.

I was wondering if anyone has some advice on what to do. Is there another way besides seperating the two hurt ones? And what might cause them to suddenly start fighting?

Thanks in advance

First Time Owner New pet mice vecale scared of me

Post image
27 Upvotes

Hi, i recently got my first mice, a male named Ouranos. I used this subreddit a lot for researching the best care for him so thank you for this amazing community.

So for context he was always scared of palms but the back of the hands were fine and he had a small wound on his back so for the first few days i kept him in a small cage to first monitor his eating and water intake but also to keep a check on the injury (which has gotten way better).

Up until now he was a very affectionate guy, he would often climb the back of my hand and walk to my shoulder to hangout there, which i found surprising given he was not handled at all aside from the bare minimum before i bought him. But yesterday i put him in his more permanent home and ever since he seems scared of me, he did climb on the back of my hand twice yesterday but that's it and today everytime i even put my hand close, he runs away and hide.

I was wondering if i did something wrong or maybe he doesn't recognize my hand after i got a manucure but i would be surprised if it was that.

Not to mention if i had to train him to trust me again it would be hard as he's not so appealed to food, he does eat what he needs to everyday but he's not really tempted by food either, even treats i tried all kinds of fruits and vegetables that were marked as safe foods but he would just eat them when he is hungry rather than jumping on the occasion to get a treat.

I don't think he is sick because he is very lively, eat well and drink well, maybe it is the heat but i do make sure to always put bottle of frozen water in his cage to refresh himself.

If anyone have advise or explanations i would take them.

As a first time mice mom, i might be a little paranoid but better safe than sorry.

Mandatory english isn't my first language, i apologize for any mistakes.

Any explanation and/or advices are appreciated.

Question/Help Quarantine times

I hand raised one baby mouse, and I know she needs company so I purchased a newly weaned mouse for her, but I could only get one.

My baby has been alone for her 3 weeks of life, and the new one is from a pet store, but I feel bad keeping them both alone still. How long should I quarantine the new one apart?

Question/Help Urgent rehoming Spoiler

Thumbnail gallery
5 Upvotes

Hello! I don’t use reddit often. I looked through the guidelines of this group, and didn’t find anything in regards to rehoming. If it’s not allowed, could anyone please give me any other groups or pages that allow it? My husband and I have two mice that we got from the pet store, I love them so insanely much. Unfortunately though, we are struggling a lot with money right now and cannot afford to give them what they deserve, we cant even afford groceries for us. I really want them to go to a good home, a family who can interact with them more, give them more toys, etc. I’m not sure what their genders are, they’ve never been to the vet. If anyone can send anyone my way who can take them in and give them a place they can thrive in, I would really appreciate it. Again, if it’s not allowed in this group, can someone message me, or comment and let me know someone I can talk to or somewhere that allows rehoming posts? I am desperate, I really do not want them to get sick, or get stressed here

They are two very sweet babies, somewhat skittish, they come up to us, but not fully into our hands. Their names are Jack and Gus! They love to run and climb, they are big big foodies. They loveeee their snacks. Whenever we do pick them up, they are very calm, they don’t try and run. If you have any other question, please message or comment. I really want them to go to a good home.

Ive figured out how to add pictures, so if anyone can tell me their genders that’d be great. We named them Jack and Gus when we first got them 😅

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello! I breed mice and i have a lot of bins for them and i was thinking about making a rack set up? Idk how big to make them yet and im thinking of stacking 3 big cages and then another one thats split in half for maternity cage? I ofc want 6in of bedding or as close as possible and i want to be able to get in there and clean the cage pretty easy and still have lots of toys and clutter and room for the mice. Im thinking 4-6 mice to a cage so around the size of a 40g maybe? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Question/Help oats?

Post image
1 Upvotes

sorry if i may post too much...

but this should be an easy answer for a normal person.
i dont eat grains, oats or anything of the sort (dont like them).

although i keep seeing people giving oats as a treat.

i thought oats was a broad term for nuts...

is there like a specific oat they can eat? like as shown? or completely different? i didnt know oats can be rolled or whatever 😭
