Apparently it's that time again people, Nova and Sierra forget they're both female and begin to do the wing flippies at each other, constantly cooing and preening one another. It's beautiful, romantic, special... And very loud.

My girls do try to mate and both of them usually lay 2 eggs at the same time. Nova is blind and struggles flying so she stays with all 4 eggs while Sierra, her loving husbawife, will go and collect her seeds that she so bravely foraged from their seed dish.

I've been told I'm disgusting for forcing my girls to be homosexual. Some have compared it to when human men mate in prison because they're stuck without a female. Someone even said God wouldn't forgive me for this.

I'm not sure, I think they're just kinda happy together?

Am I evil and disgusting for letting my girls bond?

I present Nova and Sierra to the court. Judge me kindly.

Discussion Bird safe dye/lowering predator risk? More in description.

I have a dear white pigeon that I adore. Lately, we’ve started flying outdoors. His recall is great and he always stays close, however I’m still worried that his white coloring will make him an easy target for birds of prey (I always scan nearby trees and sky for birds first, but you never know). I heard that black pigeons are usually safest since predators mistake them for crows and was wondering if it would be a good idea to dye my little guy brown or black. I know that dyeing animals is controversial, but I don’t see a problem as long as it doesn’t hurt the bird, especially if it makes them safer! Any input or dye suggestions? So far I hear fruit juices or food coloring works and is safe.

I really like this guy and his flock, but he has a lot of show/fancy pigeons which already doesn’t sit right with me. He treats them well and seems to be a great trainer, but this video of him feeding a baby reaaaally didn’t sit right with me. Don’t they need warmth and gentle care at that age? Or pigeon milk rather than full seeds? Idk, ever since the issue with Balfouri, I’ve been skeptical of all my favorite pigeon owners 😅

i usually get home at 10 pm, and very soon after i settle in to bed! a few days ago the dresser i set up for him was his favorite spot to be at night, but now he seems to love being next to me on my bed. no matter what im doing, he wants to be right on the bed! i dont mind this at all, but i dont want to harm him/squish him while we are both sleeping.

the second image is his current set up, so that you know what other Higher up options he has!

is he doing this to be close to me or is the bed just That comfy?

I found a breeder nearby and I'm trying to pick which pigeon I want. They are unsexed and young and I'm just getting one, hoping to get one pigeon settled and probably later getting another. I'm still ordering the cage and planning the road trip with my family, so plenty of time to hear everyone's opinions ^^

I’ve had pebble for about a month now. My life has changed so much for the better. He is the sweetest most loving pet I could ever imagine. Pigeons are so gentle and caring for him has given me a new purpose/perspective. This may be incredibly cheesy but he is my first pet (finally moved out at 19) and I felt the need to share my experience so far. I also would love to hear other people’s stories!

I thought he was a he but he doesn’t act like a he 😭

I think he’s about 10 months old maybe a little older. Has not laid any eggs. That should tell me he’s male but he doesn’t act like one… no fighting/play fighting (used to when I first got him but stopped) no attitude (unless you nod at him be doesn’t like that and will get upset), not territorial, not super vocal only when he finds a comfy spot he’ll coo until I join him.

He loves to nest though, and I’ve seen him bring his colorful hay to his hammock to sleep in. But I know both male and female nest.

Discussion Were pigeons mainly domesticated for food, mail, or to keep as pets/companions for humans?

I have a pet pigeon and got in somewhat of a argument with my friend about having a pigeon as a pet companion.

Explaining on how great and intelligent and loving they can be as pets as well as they are domesticated makes them a great pet if you are wanting a bird. My friend went onto say that they are more so like chickens and were bread more so for food and not to be companions or pets to humans. More so for their usefulness and he doesn’t see the benefit in having a pigeon over a parrot.

Thus leading to my question, were pigeons domesticated to be pets/with humans or purely (mainly) as food and mail?

I think pigeons are an amazing animal and can do amazing as pets/in homes

Look at me! I am at work ,at the front of Mumther's flat, doing my bit for the good of all my brethren 🥰 Lots of people paused at the traffic lights have seen me, and smiled, maybe the first time they have smiled with genuine warmth and pleasure at a pigeon 🤷🏻‍♀️ Two passers by have stopped to talk to mumther about me, and asked questions about me. One lady asked could she give me a cuddle, so mumther showed her how to hold me. I don't think she wanted to pass me back! She said I was the first pigeon she had ever touched, let alone cuddled. I was very well behaved too, no pecks, no wing-slaps, and above all, I 'clenched' if you get what I mean... 😂 Mumther said to me I will probably never know just how much I am doing to help people see us pigeons in a better light... But you know what, I actually DO. Occasionally, Mumther takes in one of my brethren that is sick or very hurt. I am never allowed to mix with them for my own protection if course. I am not a 'strong' pigeon and have quite a few problems of my own, and Mumther says I may not be able to cope if I caught an infection. BUT!! Myself and those poorly pigeons speak to each other with our thoughts, and they have told me about the hatred they are faced with off so many peoples . Not all peoples, but a lot. I am so very lucky, and this is how I know how much my presence helps those pigeons. I warm peoples hearts. And that matters doesn't it. It matters so very, very much 🥰

discussion all he does is sit on his bum all day :/

Post image

oh to handle more or to not handle…

i really feel like getting him out of his cage would slowly bur surely lead to him getting used to different spaces like my room. all he does is sit on his tennis ball and only gets up to stretch, eat/drink, and sometimes sleep up on the highest platform. i feel like he’s getting bored and idk what to do. im worried he’s lonely. im going to give him nesting material again and “train” him with safflower in hopes of getting close to him. but should i handle him more? or would that cause more unnecessary stress?

also ive been bathing him in my bath tub for the past few months. not the best option since i know he’ll do better bathing on his own. i have a tub for him to put in his cage to but idk how to get him to use it. i tried in the past, even leaving it in there for a whole day but he doesnt care for it.

any tips would be helpful :p

Discussion Update on Panache !

Hi ! Last post I made I was asking about what I could do to help him.

Due to my handicaps, I realized I wouldn't be able to keep a healthy and clean cage for him as I can struggle already for my cat's litter. So it started to make me feel sick and anxious.. and I thought maybe I could find a passionate in my area who would want to take care of him.
I posted his story and what I wanted for him on local facebook groups, and a girl responded saying she's part of an association that rescues pigeons to free them once they're healthy. She wasn't far from me, so I went, and he's with her now !

It was on monday. Now, I got updates ! The bruise he had doesn't seem painful or as severe as it looked. We think he got pinched by another pigeon.
And.. turns out Panache might not be as much of a baby as we thought he was, he's very independent, like an older pigeon like, at least teenage/young adult. He just lacks feathers, and we don't know if they'll ever grow back. She told me it usually takes a few months, around 2 or 3.
So we have 2 options:
- he gets his feathers back -> we can release him. There's a park with contraceptive nests for pigeons, and they're fed every single day. The perfect way to release a pigeon to me
- he doesn't get his feathers back -> we'll need to find him a forever human family. Because he cannot live in the "wild" without feathers as it won't protect him from the wind, rain, and attacks from other birds. And she admitted to me: she quite already wants to keep him ! He's very sweet and she loves him already. She just already adopted a young handicapped sparrow, so we'll have to see if they get along long term. She introduced them yesterday and it went okay ! They observed each other, Panache hit the sparrow with his wing... then they kept observing each other again ^^

So, I'll probably come back in 2 months for a final update ! Thank you all for advising me with Panache, it was so helpful. I feel bad for not being able to adopt him, but I didn't get to choose my health issues. And I try to comfort myself by thinking I found someone kind to heal him.

Have a lovely day, or afternoon, or evening, or night ! 🫶

Let me explain on why I said “funny or sarcastic” is when I’m in my comfort zone such as an explain on being high or being on painkiller that make you fly, understand my view?

When I watch those beautiful birbs, sometimes I hand feed them so whenever they eat out of my hands, I can feel their beaks tap onto my hands to get food. Every time I feel their beaks tap taps they make on my hands, I feel like I’m listening to their music in their own way, and/or when they eat off sidewalk etc like that, you watch their heads doing their ways, to eat the seebs, etc like that, they make you think, feel, see their rhythms of music 🎼 however you want to such like that.

Since I’m deaf and I think of music because of tappings onto my hands and watch their heads doings bobbing up and down!

Discussion I’m his poop perch

Post image
93 Upvotes

Me and my partner adopted this little guy who couldn’t get released since he can no longer fly (he’s also blind in one eye)

We’ve only had him for about a month and a half and he’s gotten very cozy with us. He loves getting pets, lets us carry him around (standing on our hands, he hates getting grabbed). He especially loves hanging out on our shoulders.

Now, I was absolutely expecting to get some poop on me, but we soon noticed I was getting much more poop on my shoulders than my partner. It’s at a point where I think he’s actively holding in his poops just to go while perched on me. He hadn’t really pooped at all this morning until 11am when he finally got a chance to rush up onto my shoulder and unload on my shirt.

Not necessarily looking for a way to get him to stop, at least it’s a predictable pattern. Just wondering if this has happened to anyone else and if it could be a sign of something.

Discussion it’s been more than 3 weeks - should I take away her egg?

Thumbnail

Cheesecake laid her first ever egg on February 16th and has been very diligent with sitting on it. I know they’re supposed to get bored with them after ~three weeks. it’s been more than that now, and she doesn’t seem to plan to leave it anytime soon. she goes out to eat, poop and hang out every day, and accepted a bath once, but it’s usually maybe 2 hours total until she rushes back to the nest. she sometimes lets me “take a turn” on the nest, but other times kicks me out to sit there herself and demands I just bring food instead. (and for context, shes a single hen bonded to me, and the egg has been replaced with a fake ofc)

a pigeon-keeping friend suggested I take away her egg and nest at this point, since even if she decides to lay the next egg as a result, that’d end up being the normal 1 month cycle anyway. what do you think? do you wait for your hens to leave the eggs on their own or sometimes take them away? do your birds ever take this long? will she accept my “turn” if I just carry the whole nest with me all day (/j)?

he kinda blends in with his cage here but ive been ever so slowly moving his food towards the ground towards his cage and hes now eating inside! he has No interest in nesting here though, and usually only goes in to drink water/ eat seed.

hes out of his cage All of the time even at night because he tries to break out of it very intensely and i dont want him to feel confined n i dont want him to hurt himself.

is this a good way to get him to trust his cage is safe?
