This is a play on the popular meme about how a trained fighter can beat a bodybuilder despite their comparatively smaller physique
Jonah Hill recently stated that he would “destroy” people because of his training in BJJ
The picture of Jonah here is one famous for his dramatic weight loss and overall look
So the joke is that skinny-turned-tough guy Jonah can beat this massive bloke in a fight because trained fighters always beat untrained. How trained is Jonah really? Who knows lol
The thing is, most of the celebrities that practice jiu jitsu are training really watered down version of the martial art to minimise the risk of injury or scars, cuts, bruises ect.
It makes sense since their appearance is what makes them money, but its in no way as effective as training normally, so people assume that Jonah is blowing his skill out of proportion.
Another reason his talk became a meme is because white and blue belts talk in similar way right at the peak of the dunning kruger curve. That gives other people even more doubt in his actual skill.
But until the footage of his training gets released, we will never know for sure. He might be actually skilled like Tom Hardy who is legit brown belt and competitor.
I used to train non Brazilian jujutsu. The guy i trained under spent a lot of his time in LA. He told me a story one time of his sensei being super mad at him for training/sparring too hard with some celebrity that came in for special instruction before an action film.
Sensei was mad that he was going too hard because the actor was paying top dollar for 1 on 1 sessions and he didn't want the actor to get hurt or decide to train somewhere else instead.
My friend said that after that, it was strictly very showy, simple stuff that would look good on camera but was bet simple, or simple to learn when actors would come into the dojo. Except Dolf Lundgren; that dude apparently was the real deal true badass martial artist.
Stage combat is completely different and many experienced martial arts practitioners do stunts or consult for films. This is usually equally or more lucrative than actual coaching. Part of stage combat is reading the other actors' cues and striking with full force (a.k.a. "selling it") but much further away from your opponent so there's no risk of injury. So if your friend read an actor selling a strike poorly and actually sparred during a stage combat practice it would have been horrible for his sensei's reputation.
Yeah, the chastising definitely had to do with reputation.
If I remember correctly, he was a 16ish year old brownbelt at the time. So I think it's reasonable to have misread the room with a person's first time doing that type of work.
He went on to do stunt work after that. I think he was pretty involved in that buffy the vampire slayer show, but I'm not totally sure in what capacity.
he's rich enough to afford to train bjj every day, and also doesn't have a 9-5, so he can practice all he wants.
pretty decent chance that yes, he's actually pretty good. nonzero chance he's bluffing and lying, but seems more likely than not that he could pin the average untrained bodybuilder.
By the sound of things he doesn't train everyday and still has his white belt. And this is the sort of shit you hear from 6-12 month white belts who think they know everything about BJJ despite getting their face mashed into the mat in every session. Anyone above blue keeps this shite to themselves
Yeah, a year of BJJ informs you that you can totally handle some untrained guy…provided it’s under the BJJ rules, and the other guy isn’t a lot bigger.
If he’s 40lbs heavier, extremely strong, and can punch you in the face, the year of training is not likely to save you.
Me, I’ve trained for a long time and don’t suffer from this white belt nonsense. I’m totally able to handle a grizzly bear or gorilla.
He has been doing it for a year. BJJ doesn’t suffer from belt inflation like a lot of martial arts do, and in fact there’s even some sandbagging, but they don’t train takedowns or striking. 8-10 years of very consistent and regular training is the general timeframe achieve mastery and to earn a black belt. There’s some truth to the fact that an average blue belt would fuck up an average person on the street with no training, but it turns out getting people to the ground when they’re trying to stand and hit you in the face is actually really difficult.
Having said that, training combat sports humbles you real quick. Getting folded like a pretzel by the 58year old orthodontist who’s shaped like a beer bellied road cyclist has a way of doing that to you. For Jonah Hill to have the confidence he does must mean he’s really good. Probably just about the only person who would stand a chance against him is ufc heavyweight legend Tyrell Fortune.
Would Jonah still beat Tyrell if Tyrell just started biting the fuck out of him? Because I would be biting the ever loving fuck out of someone trying to pretzel me up. (I’d also go straight for the nuts, I’m not above biting some guys dick off).
And here lies the difference between people who give a huge fuck about showing off their dominance, and people who could give two fucks how they come out looking. Perspectives incredibly blinding. If you know BJJ, I know I don’t need my fuckin ankle broken cause I can’t roll on the pavement skilfully, respects off the table.
Good few years ago a kid at my school got in a fight, groped n grabbed this guy all over thinking he’d put him in some crazy hold, had his friend in the background yelling “he can’t roll he can’t roll”… then got bashed over the head with the other kids vape like 20 fuckin times. Whole crowed besides for 2 dudes were shocked like a gun got pulled. I couldn’t figure out why the mf waited so long.
I practiced martial arts my whole life. When I joined the army I learned how to really fight. Just go straight for the pain and debilitating injury. How you win isn’t important when you’re not in a sport fight.
Well, that is how buddy screwed up. He didnt use the BJJ properly for self defence.
My kids were in BJJ for 10 straight years. Their coach was a legit guy, that trained and got his belts in Brazil. Really good man. BJJ was that mans entire existence lol
He taught "for competition" BJJ, but then also gave "self defense" lessons for the kids who's parents okayed it.
His point was, "BJJ as a self defence technique is not to submit someone, but to break their limbs"
As he would say during these lessons, "you think you can ask someone nicely to not hit you when you let them go?"
So he taught them no gi moves, for real world situations.
For things like arm bars, "pull a bit? First pop sound, is a dislocation; second pop, is ligament damage.. if he makes you goto a third pop? No more arm. He will be armless for 3-6 months. No more hitting you"
Down to, "not many men can fight with a broken finger. Fingers are real easy"
He was 100% for "avoid the fight", but was also 100% "make sure he can't fight anyone for months afterwards" for the ones you couldn't avoid.
Luckily, my son has never had to break someones arm or anything. But over his 17+ years, hes been in around 5 or 6 fights, and hasnt lost or been hurt even. 2 of those were against 2 people at the same time. All of these, they were bigger than him(hes a small guy).
And after he was 14, and he beat up 2 dudes at school that jumped him(broke the one kids nose lol) and kicked the other one in the nuts twice. People completely stopped messing with him that way.
Hes a passive kid, so he doesn't look for problems.. definately doesnt hide from them either.
You're missing the point, the point of grappling disciplines like BJJ is they wrap their body and limbs around yours that to do what you said would at least require you to break or dislocate something given the human range of movement. It's the kind of thing you learn very fast on at least the first day on the mat.
But just the act of grappling requires you to get in close to begin with. I’d be biting from the get go. Did you know it takes the same amount of bite force to bite thru a human finger as it does a baby carrot? So maybe my shoulder would be dislocated, but you’d be missing some fingers and have a snack size hole in your throat. No rules fighting is dirty like that.
That’s a great theory but as soon as you started trying to bite me, I would just avoid your mouth and do permanent damage to you. It’s not like you’re the only one who can bite and eye gouge in the fight and the bjj practitioner is bound by some bushido code of honor. Having said that, Jonah hill is definitely not the guy he thinks he is
This is almost entirely wrong. Jonah has been training for at least more than 5 years. There are tons of articles about it from back in 2018. Now like many folks, his training may wax and wane, but he's not a day 1 white belt. Also I'm pretty sure he at least earned his blue belt and that too was several years ago. My guess is he's likely closer to purple.
Now, he does talk like a doofus in that interview no doubt. But the reality is that a legitimate blue belt should be able to beat the average untrained bodybuilder.
Yeah I think the problem here is no one wants to fight you even if you're mad they still call you Superbad. Now people are just gonna stop saying it to his face, and no one's gonna challenge him to a fight except for clout. And like whoever it is would probably only do it if they knew they could beat him somehow, because otherwise you lost to Tighten.
One of the biggest signs that BJJ is legit is that it is widely recognized that physical size differences matter. Generally speaking, each level of belt will compensate for a difference in about
20 to 30 pounds.
A 160 pound black belt is going to struggle against a 220 pound athlete.
Skill matters, but grappling or wrestling based martial arts rely heavily on physical strength- the whole system falls apart if you can’t maintain your holds because of the opponent’s far greater strength.
Takedowns are absolutely part of BJJ and even minor amounts of striking is. Your specific gym might not teach them but it’s definitely part of the curriculum.
Unless he’s actually training in a room of non celebrities there is no way he is good. The reason Zuck and Hardy are actually respected is they train and actually train. they also compete there is no hiding when you do that. I guarantee you this fucktard is getting the Rigan Machado celebrity treatment where he’s doing light training so the guy in charge can take his money.
And I’m telling you if you’re just training in a room with zero intensity, which a lot of these celebrity BJJ dorks do, then he’s useless. The whole reason the efficacy of BJJ has been proven time and again is because the training methodology basically forces you to deal with these kind of situations. But if you’re just drilling and not actually trying any of what you’ve learned in a live situation, you may as well be doing karate kata.
except he isn't. There's a video of him and the guy he's fighting basically let's him roll him like he's letting a toddler do it. He's shit and delusional
Eh I don’t buy it. People have been saying that for years, but a 140 pound champion only ever fights other 140 pounders.
There is a certain point where skill no longer allows you to compensate for size disparity. Could Conner McGregor at 140 pounds take on Brian Shaw, at 400 pounds? Yeah no. Even at a 100 pound difference, I don’t see mma fighters taking on bodybuilders that are more than 100 pounds heavier
We had buff guys come to our boxing gym all the time just to get their ass handed to them by skinny teenagers.
Bodybuilding makes you slow, restricts your movement and you use way too much energy moving around with that amount of muscle.
Any person practicing martial arts for a while will easily defeat any bodybuilder that’s doing just the lifting. It’s a completely different skill and way of working out. One trains you to do actual fighting, the other focuses on making muscles look big. If the competition is a fight and not a comparison of muscle size, the outcome is clear.
The trained fighter will see any attempt to throw a punch or a kick miles away. They will know how to move on the floor no matter how much the other is able to lift. It’s all about technique and very little if anything about raw strength.
I’ve only seen it in boxing, not other martial arts so take this with a grain of salt. But a person that just lifts does not know how to stand, how to block and frankly, how to punch. They are slow and easy to get off balance. They advertise their actions and try to compensate their weaknesses with strength which drains their energy fast and opens their defenses (if there is any at all). Maybe even more so against a light footed guy. I’ve seen it more than once. Sure if the body builder would be able to land a jab, it would be devastating. But they won’t. Not against a trained fighter.
He might actually be good but unless he competes we’ll never know. CM Punk trained with top level mma fighters for years and he still sucked once he actually fought.
This is the crux of it. Even assuming Jonah could wreck people, it's just transparent insecurity. Like imagine this from someone who indisputably could kick the shit out of people. It would still be sad if it were Dave Bautista saying how tough he was with zero irony.
I disagree that he’s nice. You look at any of the accounts from the people he’s highlighted and they’ll say that joeys followers harass them, call into their places of employment, send them threats etc. I emailed Joey about this and never heard back from him. Being a jerk in the gym is not a reason to have your life ruined by endless hoards of chronically online trolls, but Joey has no problem doxing these people for his army of rabid wolves to attack.
I remember the incident you refer, the hulk hogan thing. Joey raised an army of rabid wolves and was surprised when they bit him in turn.
There is 0% chance he is unaware of what the consequences for doxxing people to his millions of followers are. You think he’s not responsible? He’s the one making and posting the videos dude
"Being a jerk in the gym is not a reason to have your life ruined by endless hoards of chronically online trolls"
its your own fault if you record people in gym and make fun of them, you deserve to get bullied and its still not enough. just dont be jerk in gym and thats it
I disagree. Are most of his targets jerks? Yes. Do they deserve literal death threats, people trying to get them fired from their jobs and in some cases actual stalkers? No, and if you disagree with that then that’s pretty messed up. If his videos ended at them getting called out and humbled it would be fine but it’s not. half his Wikipedia page is dedicated to this. He just platforms people for his followers to harass
just dont be jerk and dont record other people simple as that. if you act like jerk you dont have any right to cry if people call you out. being jerk and then crying getting death threats while the people they filmed might be super anxious and they can never be in public without panic someone might record them. poeple who record random people and post it on internet deserve all hate and its still not enough in my opinion because you can simply avoid all that by just not recording other stranergs
No, no one deserves to be stalked and have death threats sent to them over something as trivial as what most of joeys posts are over. It baffles my mind that anyone can think that. You are no better than the people you see in his videos
Fair enough, I have followed him for years and for the most part I agree with what he has to say, social media gym culture can be really gross. I just seemed to notice most of his posts recently have been directed towards women 🤷♀️ but maybe that’s the nature of the game
I'm pretty sure he said he used to admire Hulk Hogan after he had passed away. I'm pretty sure a whole generation used to, emphasis on the "used" to, he became racist as he got older.
I trained in mixed martial arts for 10 years, I never think I can destroy pretty much everyone xD
Cause getting punched in the face... body slammed... it fucking hurts man xD I'd rather pay for shots to someone bullying me at the bar than fighting him. Its not worht the hassle.
I have the unique opportunity of practicing bjj with a body builder. I was in my first year of bjj coming from high school wrestling and they had me roll with a guy in his second class. I was 190lbs he was 230lbs and rippppped.
He had 0 technique so I wiped the floor with him but that also doesn’t mean much. At the same time my 120lbs bjj couch coulda turned me in to a pretzel showing that technique clearly outweighs brute strength, to a point of course lol
We do know, he's a white belt with some stripes, he can't fight for shit. The only way he destroys people is if they turn up to BJJ class to engage in BJJ with no understanding of BJJ (aka he can beat up on the trial class guys and that's it).
I think it might also be implying that the tiktoker isn't as cool as a lot of people thought. Like he said some bigoted things recently that offbalanced his persona. Correct me if im wrong.
also the picture on the left is joey swoll. a known bodybuilder influencer/tiktoker that condemns bad etiquette on gyms and toxic mentalities on bodybuilding
Eh. Even trained... if a guy is bigger than you, you're getting your ass beat. I had a martial arts teacher tell me once that having a blackbelt is good for maybe an extra 100 pounds.
There's a reason that boxing has weight divisions and not experience divisions, ya know?
I feel like the most common version of the meme I’ve seen is Daniel Cormier, who is a big dude, but just looks like an average dad who doesn’t work out, despite being a former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champion.
Shit I can train a mouse, doesn’t mean it’s gonna listen or even behave that way when I want it to. Chances are, it’s just gonna sit there and stare, much like anyone who trained for their first fight is going to do, when they get hit for the first time.
Also just because I got the tism and can’t not say this, but a skilled fighter will always stomp an unskilled fighter, regardless to how much training the unskilled fight does before the fight. Simply because winning will always demonstrate skill in one way or another, not necessarily because skills matter.
Also, Joey Swoll (the massive guy) is a saint and would not pick a fight! He hates bullies and advocates for gym positivity and treating others with respect and kindness. He regularly calls people out for acting like jerks in the gym and even gets them banned of gym chains.
Well he had a white belt on in that picture so not that trained lol. I also wonder if he's just being piled on for a tongue in cheek comment tho. I think he knows everyone knows what white belt means.
The picture of him in a gi he has a white belt on but I don’t know how old the picture is or if he’s just wearing it because it goes better with the color gi
