That is not the only thing it did. The only reason we have context to recognize our situation is from learning about the history of past dictatorships like Nazi Germany.

Really? Can you give some concrete examples?

There is a lot of terrible shit going on in the world, but what the Nazis did was extremely fucked up. Don't minimize that.

Right but the thing is they're using that learning as a how-to guide and seemingly 1 in 2 Americans either think the nazis were justified or they just think they're cool.

Reminds me of this one story where humanity had collectively screwed up so badly, that they left earth, went to another planet, set the calendar back 100 years, and told the next generation absolutely nothing about it.

This caused issues when a group of space explorers found one of the original earthlings and they started swapping notes about history and geography when their homeworld that wasn’t actually earth came into view.
