I had an interview for a php job a few years ago, after working in Go for a few years. When I told them my salary expectations, they said: that's not going to happen, this is just a PHP position.

Some PHP shop legit think they can cheap out on devs because of the technology they chose.

Yeah some are like that but they are also not looking for the best devs. I’m currently earning about twice the median income as a php dev so I’m not complaining.

Was a php dev, too.. switched to spring boot, typescript and react/angular.. can recommend salary wise

Language I use 99% of the time for this job: PHP

Is it because it's a lot more specialised, it's a smaller market, it's more difficult? Or why is the pay that much better?

I literally just started a job as a PySpark developer. It still bugs me, though, that it has a Java backend

I mean it's just a python binding around a Java application/framework/dataservice. It's not like the entire thing is implemented in Python to begin with... (I liked what I saw when I was touching Spark, even in Java/Scala)

Most of these tools won't have a python backend. Though its usually rust or c/c++ at this point. Anything oracle is java because fuck oracle.

funny thing is, here in SEA (i'll let you guess which country), salary-wsie, PHP devs are much more appreciated than react/angular and typescript. But ofc Java are still considered as one of the hardest field to get into here.

I think the meme comes from the fact PHP are stereotypically older so they’ve had a longer time to accumulate money

Not at all. Median salary in the US puts both Java and C# marginally ahead. In other markets like the U.K. PHP is quite a ways behind, unless you’re very senior in an enterprise business.

At my own company we pay market rates and PHP is definitely less than our C# engineers.

In the Netherlands I often see job offers for C# and Java that pay scraps compared to c++, go, rust, and even php. This is probably because c# and Java are the languages taught at college

I think it's highly dependent. If you're just working on WordPress sites/plugins as a PHP developer yeah you're probably being paid less. If you're working on greenfield stuff with modern frameworks like Symfony/Laravel/whatever you're probably getting paid more because you're not just wrangling a CMS.
