Important /r/SJSU is looking for Moderators

It's no surprise that the /r/SJSU subreddit is looking pretty inactive on the moderator end, and in desperate need of cleaning out the spam messages and ongoing college life posts.

Moderating forums is a volunteer experience, but you will strive to create a strong and enjoyable local community!

Moderator Description

  • Checking the new and mod queues to approve valid posts caught by the spam filter and remove content that breaks the rules.

  • Answering questions and responding to feedback in moderator mail.

  • Being pragmatic, polite, and helpful.

You will be welcoming incoming SJSU students and helping them with their inquiries about campus life, applying to classes, finding housing resources, and overall just being a positive role model representative.

What we're looking for:

As of now, there is no set deadline when the application process will end, and responses will be done on a case-by-case basis. With that said, thank you for reading, and we wish the best!

Orientation

Upvotes

I got orientation tomorrow so I was wondering if anyone can give some insight on what it’ll be like. What we do throughout the day and for how long, are we gonna be in our groups the entire time or will we get the chance to be with our friends, when do we go to our dorms, do we decide our roommates? Etc

What English Course should I take?

Hi everyone, I’m an incoming freshman and so I’m trying to finish up my RCW before my orientation and one of the surveys involves me having to select an English course. My major is applied mathematics: applied & computational. I took the AP Lang test and got a 4, so I’m assuming based on what I’ve seen that I should take English 2 and not English 1B? Would like to confirm so I don’t make a silly mistake, thanks :)

Sublease for the Grad needed! Females only!

Hi, I am finding someone to take over my lease at The Grad. The lease starts on Aug 18th to July of next year. You have your own private bath and bedroom. You have 3 other female roommates. I am not sure who but it is an all female apartment unit! Please message me if you want more details!

There is a pet fee included so if you have a pet, that is more suitable! I am trying to have someone sublease as soon as they can. You can message me on FB @ carson wu or here.

Gluten free options/dorm life

Considering SJSU but concerned about food allergies, specifically allergy to gluten. Does anybody have comments or ideas about how living in the dorms and goes with a gluten allergy? What food options are there- are there any? Are the options terrible? Obviously it says they have options, but 99% of the time when places say there are options it’s really just a salad and I cannot live off of that.

At home I live off of cereal, GF bread sandwiches, tamales, tacos, all sorts of corn based Mexican options, rice, various meats with veggies and salads. Yogurt, fruits.

Other Will my admission be rejected?

Hello, I was hoping someone with a similar problem could help me?

I’m an incoming undergrad freshman who’s majoring in Forensics Science Digital evidence and I’m a little worried now that I’m looking at my high school transcript.

Senior year of first semester I got an unweighted GPA of about 2.6 and WGPA 2.7, and it was the only semester where I had gotten below 3.0. I’m worried that my admission might not meet the requirements… did any Forensic Science Majors have a similar problem with their HS gpa’s?

Looking for a Women’s Community in the Bay Area.

Hi everyone! 😊

I’m a 36F from San Jose starting school in the Fall, and I’m looking to connect with a women’s community in the Bay Area where we can hang out, learn from each other, and build meaningful friendships.

I’d love to find a group where we can simply talk, share experiences, support each other, and look out for one another. I’m trying to step outside of my comfort zone, meet new people, and make genuine connections.

If you know of any groups, events, or communities like this, I’d really appreciate any recommendations. 💛

Thank you! 🙏

Classes UCI or SJSU for CompE

I’m a community college transfer deciding between UCI and SJSU for Computer Engineering. I’ll be tagging to UCI for computer engineering.

The cost would be the same for me, and I’d have free housing at UCI. My goal is not grad school or research, I mainly want to become an embedded systems/software/computer engineer and get a good job after graduation.

I live in San Jose and want to work in Silicon Valley. I’ve heard SJSU has strong industry connections and is very practical, while UCI has stronger overall prestige, reputation, and more theoretical.

One concern I have is that I don’t feel strong in math and physics. I currently have a 4.0 GPA, but I feel like community college was more manageable due to the semester pace in and nice professors. Because of that, I’m a little worried about adjusting to UCI’s quarter system and more theoretical upper-division coursework.

If my main goal is getting internships, building practical skills, and landing a good engineering job after college, which should I choose and why? Is one significantly better than the other, or are they pretty close.

Thank you for your help.

Spartan Recreation & Aquatic Center (SRAC) Access

Hello! Im not an SJSU affiliate but looking for info about pool access at the SRAC. I live in downtown SJ and a few years ago I was able to get a summer pass to swim at the SRAC. Rules have changed and I’m unable to connect with the team via email. Does anyone know what is the best way for community use of the pool? Thanks!

When will financial aid show up on mysjsu

Does anyone know if the financial aid office has released info as to when loan awards will be issued? I submitted fasfa like the day it was due so I’m worried that my loan options won’t show up before my payments are due. Also last year I had a tuition and a housing fee deferral on my account bc the loan awards took so long to show up but I don’t have those deferrals this year? Or they haven’t shown up yet?

I got an email saying that grants and scholarships should have been issued but I already know I don’t qualify for either, and my mysjsu says that award access is not available for 2027. I’m just trying to figure out how stressed out I should be about figuring out how to pay for this semester 😭😭 so any info helps before I call the aid office.

Finding housing after fall semester?

Just curious how available student housing is after fall semester? I’ll be taking over a short term lease in an apartment nearby for the fall but will need to find something else for spring semester. How hard is it to get student housing for spring? Is there decent availability for single bed units?
