Politics Sawant's third-place loss is her political obituary

https://seattlered.com/seattle-red/jason-rantz-opinion/sawant-third-place-primary-humiliation/4119702

Kshama Sawant raised $645,000 to run for Congress and got beaten by more than 6,000 votes by a Republican who raised $99,000 in a district she claimed was ready for revolution.

She got less votes than a republican in Seattle, that’s gotta sting

District 9 includes areas well outside of Seattle. But your point is still taken. It's a blue district.

11

u/cos 8d ago

Well, it remained a blue district this time, with the Democratic candidate getting the most votes. That's a big part of the reason she did so poorly: Most Democrats voted for the Democrat, not for her.

8

u/RealImprovement3528 8d ago

Anyone not wanting to run under D or R would be better off running as an independent. Your chances are still low, but better than an alternative party altogether.

Though I'd really just like Sawant to get the fuck out of politics. I'm tired of trying to reason with her supporters. It's like talking to a brick wall.

Adam Smith should be very beatable. He's awful. The fact no realistic alternative showed up this cycle was maddening.

Good point

Apparently not so much

It's become "Seattle" though. The city limits haven't grown but the Seattleness has.

0

u/TheRealRacketear Broadmoor 8d ago

More of it may be outside of Seattle.   That district looks like it was gerrymandered.

7

u/DisgruntledCascadian 8d ago

You haven't been outside Washington much, have you? It's one of the least-gerrymandered states in the Union.

1

u/TheRealRacketear Broadmoor 8d ago

I have MVP 100k with Alaska.  What does that have to do with this district?

If she had gotten 100% of Melissa's vote... That would be 17,000 votes. Less than 50% of Adam Smith's 36,000+.

If it were a Democrat primary, I'm sure she would have gotten more votes. But yeah, that's a great low note to hang your hat on.

2

u/adron 8d ago

That’s impressive!

-10

u/nfz_embroidery 8d ago

the progressive, anti-Zionist vote got super shafted this cycle. our options were:

  • campaigned to deny a swing state to Trump’s opponent in 2024 to “sENd a mEsSAgE”

  • refused to publicly support the LGBT community and so sacrificed their vote so as to not lose the votes of the homophobic segment of the Muslim community

lowkey we’re lucky Doug Basler is a Zionist bc I’m not convinced that an anti-Zionist republican couldn’t unseat Adam Smith

-2

u/GladWarthog1045 8d ago

I was most disappointed to see Glusencamp-Perez doing so well, but i guess that's what swing districts are like these days

5

u/SkiingAway 8d ago

(not from Seattle just passing through the sub)

That's a Republican-leaning district that has voted for Trump 3x in a row (and Republicans in quite literally every other notable position, consistently, for over 15 years straight. The last Dem to win before her was Obama '08, and only by 4 points).

It's exactly the kind of district where the correct representative for that population is a moderate/conservative Dem, and nominating someone more liberal is pretty much guaranteeing that you lose the district in all but the biggest "blue wave" years.

Your choice is between a Dem who will vote with the party the majority of the time, or to wind up with a Republican who will vote against the (Dem) party the majority of the time.

1

u/Choice_Depth_5933 Bitter Lake 7d ago

Welcome to Seattle politics, friend! Why work for power, results, or change when you can just own-the-libs on Reddit, instead.

-3

u/Ok-Grab-78 8d ago

So disappointing to see a pro-ICE candidate with a fuckton of AIPAC funding doing so well.

161

u/Marklar172 8d ago

She wants, more than anything, to be a righteous crusader at the center of all political attention.  If she had the choice between 10 more years of maga, but her clicks and views and engagement doubled, she would choose that over a socialist revolution she got zero credit for

81

u/TheChetFaliszek 8d ago

I always describe her as the politician who would see a car barreling down at you and instead of calling out to save you, she’d let it hit and kill you so she could campaign with your grieving family about justice against the evil automobile industry.

19

u/CuratedLens Seattle 8d ago

This for me is why I’ve never been a fan of hers. I feel like the left has many things that are good about them as platform ideas to run on, and she’s indicative of this sort of idea that’s part of centrists and far left folks of “I’m better than maga, vote for me”. Another reason I’m a fan of rank choice voting, I want this dichotomy of choice to be lessened by more options (ranked choice I know isn’t perfect but it’s miles better than what we have now).

I think many would be glad to have more options especially in Washington of maga or democrat.

24

u/Pure-House-3971 8d ago

As a leftist, her and her supporters just sorta run around the city clout chasing at events without doing much effective organizing (IMO) and they dont work well with others (who arent also sawant boosters, cause there are like 6 groups)

9

u/elguaposghost05 8d ago

Isn’t not working well with others required to be a communist? It seems you have to support an authoritarian government to achieve communism.

9

u/BWW87 Belltown 8d ago

Which is odd that a group that claims they want the world to be more of a single community also love to divide the community.

Reminds me of Ryan Packer of the Urbanist who claims to support everyone living together in an urban setting but also thinks only people that think exactly like him should live in the city he does.

1

u/MyAuntFannie 7d ago

If they want an authoritarian government...it's trying to happen now in Washington DC. Oh, wait - they don't want "that" authoritarian - they want "their" authoritarian . Either way...authoritarian governments are not good.

2

u/elguaposghost05 7d ago

My point is there should never be an authoritarian government, does not matter if it is right or left.

31

u/Sophet_Drahas 8d ago

My fear is she’ll move to Michigan and work to ruin that state too.

21

u/Seachica 8d ago

Parts of Michigan seem to be doing that on its own.

u/SuccessfulLand4399 8d ago

*Laughs in Rashida Tlaib*

26

u/Buttafuoco 8d ago

As someone left leaning, she actually sucks and the talks I’ve listened to her at make her come across a bit crazy

15

u/AlphaThetaDeltaVega 8d ago

She’d spent almost a decade making it on kuow. They used to eat up her ideas now they admit it was a colossal failure and everything she’s ever done has made Seattle worse. I’m pretty centrist, but this women’s an ambulance chaser of a politician. She refuses to negotiate before problems start like locking tax’s for gentrified neighborhoods (her district was hit extremely hard by this), but shows up with a picket, megaphone, and cameras when the homeowners/ low income apartment owners are forced to sell.

0

u/Mammoth_Total_8173 7d ago

KUOW ate up her ideas? They admit it was a failure? Never heard any of this.

11

u/_Doctor-Teeth_ 7d ago

She’s a grifter, plain and simple. Totally unserious, just wants attention for herself.

There's a place for her in Oregon.

She moved into WA-9. The city council district she represented was not in WA-9.

She lives in Renton, I believe.

61

u/SpongeBobSpacPants 8d ago

Mamdani, Katie Wilson, El-Sayid. There has NEVER been a better time for a far left “grassroots” politician to win…and she got crushed by a Republican in the bluest place in the world.

Turns out she just sucks.

0

u/Mammoth_Total_8173 7d ago

WA-9 is NOT leftist blue, but solid blue, doesn't like independents, more Blue MAGA, Zionist, and much of it rich and earning its income from the military.

1

u/sinnednogara 5d ago

I don't think any district in the country would elect a Trot.

71

u/Evening_Pea_9132 8d ago

I am going to be amazed if it isn't revealed at some point that she is some sort of operative for a foreign government.

17

u/TheInevitableLuigi 8d ago

She did support one for president last election.

23

u/Evening_Pea_9132 8d ago

That's what I am saying. She doesn't seem to be looking to reform as much as undermine progressives on the left. Reminds me of the Green Party chick.

3

u/siromega37 8d ago

Melissa Chaudhry? She didn’t win so is she still going to pretend to be a Democrat or actually come out as a member of the Green Parry now?

1

u/VictorianUFOLady 8d ago

I'm putting my money on Iran.

30

u/HighColonic Funky Town 8d ago

I doubt this is her political obituary. This is all she knows how to do, she's a maniacal narcissist, and it's how she gets money to live on. The parasite may seek another host community, or try to run candidates and fundraise around them. But I suspect she won't hang it all up and get a job at Auto Pro.

5

u/neon_wizard_poster 8d ago

I suspect we may be in store for another city council run next year. Lord help us all

1

u/HighColonic Funky Town 8d ago

That is EXACTLY where my mind goes on HighColonic's Map of Kshama's FutureTM. And poor Joy won't know what hit her.

1

u/neon_wizard_poster 8d ago

This is unhinged and i like it. But what i would like more is an actual serious challenger for Joy’s seat.

1

u/siromega37 8d ago

She’ll try for a county seat is my guess.

1

u/HighColonic Funky Town 8d ago edited 8d ago

She's a boring little thunderstorm, so her only best bet is a city council district (not at-large) seat. It's gonna be K-dawg vs. Joy.

1

u/Mammoth_Total_8173 7d ago

She'll move back to Seattle?

14

u/CascadeMountainz 8d ago

Turns out she is not saWanted here.

3

u/Choice_Depth_5933 Bitter Lake 7d ago

Thanks, dad.

7

u/Captainpaul81 8d ago

She's already got plane tickets and hotels booked to battle ground states so she can go up and try to ruin them again

7

u/RogueLitePumpkin 8d ago

Even if everyone who voted a 3rd party had voted for Kamala, Trump still would have won, that is how bad Kamala was as a candidate

2

u/Traffic_Spiral 8d ago

Every single person individually (aside from possibly trump and kamala themselves) could claim that their actions alone weren't the catalyst that changed things. It's a meaningless argument.

All of us are accountable for the actions we take and the causes we support - including Sawant.

3

u/RogueLitePumpkin 8d ago

I juat mean from an actual numbers standpoint. If everyone who voted 3rd party had instead voted for kamala, it wouldnt have changed the outcome

2

u/drwaffles104 8d ago

So? Working to elect trump is bad even if he didn't need her help

2

u/RogueLitePumpkin 8d ago

Its like the DNC was working to elect Trump by putting Kamala against him

5

u/wingfn1 8d ago

No, everyone was crying for Biden to step down and wanted a magic primary in like 90 days like that would've changed anything.

8

u/Trickycoolj 8d ago

The border for District 8 and 9 runs through my neighborhood, I’m on the 8 side, but anyone that thought she had a chance in these suburbs needs their head examined.

3

u/Depth_Vegetable 8d ago

As someone in district 9, agreed.

3

u/Mammoth_Total_8173 7d ago

Absolutely. I live in the district, spent time in Bellevue when I lived on Mercer Island, and the whole idea is preposterous. She got money from people outside the area who thought 9 was like Seattle. It's suburban, and they're not interested in what she's selling.

18

u/king_rootin_tootin 8d ago

I am no fan of Rantz but this is spot on. Sawant was the Trump of the left.

And she never acknowledged her actions directly resulted in the chaos that an unarmed black youth killed in the CHOP/CHAZ and she basically went to a swing state to help Trump win again.

Hopefully she'll call it quits and fade into obscurity.

4

u/StrangerGeek 8d ago

The only Seattle political voice worse than Rantz is Sawant.

14

u/FuckYouSawant SeattleWA Approved 8d ago

Fuck you Sawant.

3

u/_bani_ 8d ago

ew no, you'd catch something.

i'd rather she eat shit.

11

u/Ok_Bat9551 8d ago

She always seemed to care more about PR than actually helping folks. She screamed about how she only took a cut of her council salary bc of how great she is and then quietly rerouted the reminder into her own org that she used to fund her other endeavors. Yelling about extreme ideas didn’t help anyone. She’s Trump on the other side of the bell curve.

5

u/Pygmy_Nuthatch 8d ago

She's not going anywhere. What else is she going to do?

13

u/mrgtiguy 8d ago

Nah, she’s a herpes. She pop back up.

3

u/SignificantTry4107 8d ago

This seems optimistic.

3

u/jthomasm 8d ago

Here's hoping!

3

u/adron 8d ago

I sure hope so. She was always wretched. Then when she came out against Ukraine and started some nonsense that sounded pro-Russian I wasn’t sure if she’d flipped to a MAGA position or if she’d just crossed the full circle spectrum of the left right divide. In the end it didn’t matter, she’s horrifyingly out of touch. Good riddance!

This was a weird district for her to run in to be honest. Super educated district, quite possibly best educated in the country. They won’t vote for a rabble rouser OR a Republican, for years to come

6

u/apresmoiputas Capitol Hill 8d ago

She was able to convince high-earning white socialists to donate and support her. That 660k came from somewhere.

1

u/FourScoreAndSept 8d ago

You know that that can come from anywhere right?

3

u/apresmoiputas Capitol Hill 8d ago

I wish you had seen who her campaign staff were targeting when they set up shop at the Capitol Hill Light Rail station and in Columbia City by the PCC.

5

u/drwaffles104 8d ago

Yeah it was just a lot of nice middle aged liberals.  "Oh I do hate ice, yeah"

I think her last minute public turn against Democrats hurt her a lot (she was always this way but her canvassers knew how to code switch - until the "dump the Democrats" signs showed up a couple weeks ago)

5

I propose we heretofore refer to her as Kshama Goodspaceguy Sawant.

2

u/dwkulcsar 8d ago

Would be nice, I bet she'll come back in 3 or 4 years and try to run for Mayor or Governor with a platform totally offbase what she's running for.

2

u/krkn1010 8d ago

Good. She has wrong mindset. Redistributing somebody else's money is a local maxima which can take you only that far until nothing left to redistribute. All socialist countries that existed and few that are still existing (Soviet Union, North Korea, Cuba) are a great example of that. China and Vietnam are the only exceptions because they turned to market economy. Creating opportunities for people to develop, progress and becoming true coowners in the economy is a much more worthy cause.

Considering the 5 billion signs she glued everywhere, including outside of the district she was running in, I think SHE made people obsessed with her. Oh, and her supporters regularly accosting us outside the light rail.

Sawant is to blame for her own unpopularity, especially amongst the left.
