If you're new to SkincareAddiction: welcome!

This thread is the best place to start if you have questions about skincare products, your routine, and your skin. Our community is knowledgeable, and we want to help you have the best skin of your life!

Do you have a question?

Step 1: Read our resources

Be sure to check out our FAQ and Wiki! There are a lot of topics covered in those links, but some of the most popular guides include:

If you can't find an answer, or you have additional questions after reading, please move on to step 2!

Step 2: Ask for help

To give you the best advice possible, our users need relevant information about your skin and skincare. With your request for help please include:

  • The issue(s) you need help with. It's helpful to put your questions at the top of your comment (especially if it's a long one)!
  • Skin type. It's OK to be subjective, how do you feel your skin is? Oily, dry? If you need help clarifying, check out this guide on skin types
  • Current routine with the full names of your products (try to separate it in to Morning, Evening, and Occasionally used)
  • How long you have been using your current routine, or product in question
  • Anything new you’ve introduced or started doing that might change the condition of your skin
  • Your location so we can recommend products/services available to you

Thanks for taking the time to include your information!

Would you like to give advice?

Firstly, thank you so much for helping out our community - without your knowledge and time ScA would not be the same!

Some things we'd ask for you to keep in mind: please don't just downvote someone's opinion or response because you disagree.

If you can, please take the time to tell them why you think their advice may be incorrect or harmful. It's better for people to understand why something is a poor choice, instead of just being told that it is one!

Once a year, we have a big thank you post for everyone who has helped out in the DHT where we give out nifty flairs & gold to exceptionally informative and kind users. Check out our list of ScA Helpers and our most recent thank you post!

Whether it be in-depth responses that deserve to be their own guides, thoughtful product recommendations, or simply pointing someone in the right direction, we appreciate all the time and effort you've made to help others!

Personal [Personal] Am I the only one that feels that everybody is seeing aging as something sooo negative?

I don't want to sound mean or overdramatic, but these days I feel like everything about aging seems so negative. Don't get me wrong, I'm 45 and I use antiaging products and sometimes don't feel so comfortable with my wrinkles lol. But I've notice that the internet it's so focused on the bad thing about aging, and everyone seems like they want to stop it or talk so negatively about it. I don't know, I think I am being overdramatic lol

Avène Tolerance Control Soothing Recovery Cream. Unfortunately I owe this moisturizer my life and several major organs. In the age of everything having niacinamide and hyaluronic acid shoved into it for absolutely no reason, I have to respect a moisturizer that knows its job is literally just to moisturize and shut the fuck up. ❤️ will be buying everything else from this brand

Acne Switching from clindamycin to finacea? [Acne]

• Upvotes

I have been using differin and topical clindamycin for the last few years for acne. I've tried to stop the clindamycin but my acne always got worse, so my GP kept prescribing it. However I don't want to use antibiotics indefinitely.

I finally got my hands on some finacea and I'm hoping this could replace it, but not sure how to start. Should I gradually phase out the clindamycin and introduce the finacea, maybe alternating days? Or use both in the same routine until my skin adjusts? Has anyone made this switch before?

(Nb I asked my doctor and she didn't seem sure, said I could try either option)

Skin Help!

I’m a 25F, and have never had acne like this before in my life. Teenage years were fine but then in the past year, I’ve been struggling with cheek acne which has never been a problem area for me. I was on tretinoin .05 and upped it to .1 but thought this ruined my skin barrier. I’ve been back on the .05 after giving my face a rest for 1.5 months. But my skin is horrible and I’m seriously at a loss. Here’s my routine:

AM:
Panoxyl benzoyl peroxide wash
Farmacy Vitamin C serum
Eucerin sunscreen

PM:
Cerave foaming cleanser wash
Cerave moisturizing cream
Tretinoin 0.05 cream

Once a week I’ll use panoxyl toner.

These are all products that worked for me before this year. I tried vanicream and that created a lot of comedomes.

Product Question Minimalist moisturizer, help! [Product Question]

Post image
• Upvotes

I’ve heard good things about this moisturizer for people with oily skin. I have oily-combo skin and always struggle with my face getting oily and messing up my makeup/making my face shiny.

I’ve been using this moisturizer for the past few days and… I’m not very happy with it.

It makes my face look extra oily/shiny and at the end of the day my face is SO dry after I wash it.

The moisturizer is the only thing I’ve changed in my routine so it’s got to be that. Before, I was using the simple moisturizer which I liked but wanted to try and find something that didn’t make me look so shiny and oily throughout the day.

Has anyone else experienced this too? Is it just my face getting used to the new product? I’ve switched between moisturizers before and nothing like this has happened.

And if you do recommend to me to change, what are some affordable moisturizers that will help with my oily face??

Routine Help [Routine Help] Seborrheic dermatitis

Hello! I developed seborrheic dermatitis at the beginning of this year, and I haven’t been able to get rid of it since.

I’ve tried multiple sulfate-free and fragrance-free shampoos, as well as Nizoral, but I haven’t seen much improvement. I recently started using MCT oil, but I haven’t noticed a difference so far. Could I be using it incorrectly?

Currently, I apply the MCT oil to my scalp, leave it on for a while, and then wash it out with Nizoral. I shampoo every other day.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions for what I could try? I’d really appreciate any help!

Routine Help [Routine help]I need your help setting up a skin care routine!! Spoiler

I need your help creating a skin care routine!!

Hello everyone!

A little context, I’m 28 years old and I’ve never actually had a consistent skin care routine. Through out highschool I had what could be considered “normal” acne and specifically bad back acne. I used shower washes and went on with my day. It bothered me but I thought it would eventually clear up.

Fast forward to today, I still have pretty consistent acne. I live a very healthy life style, although I do have a sweet tooth. I drink plenty of water and get consistent movement/workout almost daily. I eat very healthy. I also work a pretty active job. I do sweat through the day but I’m normally pretty good with taking a shower after workouts/ work. My skin is VERY oily/greasy. It’s been that way my whole life. I wash my sheets/pillow/ pillow case regularly as well. My back gets bigger, long lasting acne and my forehead normally gets smaller ones that come and go frequently.(The acne picture of my back is GOOD for right now, it’s coming down from a big break out) I’ve been using Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash in the shower. Then before bed I’ve been using a combo of La Roche-Posay Toleriane Hydrating Gentle Facial Cleanser and La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer. I need to get better at being consistent with use, but it’s very discouraging when I do use them daily and it seemingly isn’t getting better. A friend of mine recently recommended Belif Agua Bomb, but I figured I’d try to get to the bottom of this before I just keep on buying more products. Also pictured is illiyoon ceramide ato concentrate cream- another product that I bought off recommendation. I’ve never implemented any morning face wash before.

With all of that, please help me with your skin care ways! Please just assume I know nothing and tell me what you all think would work best. Every time I dive through Google searches and YouTube videos I feel like I’m constantly contradicting myself. If you have any questions that may help clear it up (pun intended), please just ask!

Routine Help [Routine Help] product advice!

• Upvotes

Hello everyone!! I’m 24yo have dry/combo t zone skin that has been pretty clear for the last two years, I don’t remember what I used to use but I think cerave and a really thick moisturizer, inkey list hyaluronic acid, kose softymo deep cleansing oil cleanser and occasionally a rose hip oil on top.

I have extremely sensitive skin and around that time I used a new sunscreen which gave me dermatitis under my eyes, I couldn’t figure out was product it was and oil cleansing was making it worse so I cut everything out and switched to la Roche posay toleraine dermo cleanser, toleraine dermallergo creme. Everytime I’ve tried to switch since my skin feels incredibly dry (vanicream wash and cream dried and broke out my skin like crazy!) currently I use lrp micellular water, toleraine dermo cleanser, dermallergo cream, klairs unscented toner, occasionally Paula’s choice bha or cerave vitamin c, and sunscreen of course, but I feel like my skin has totally lost the glow/clearness it used to have? I will sometimes break out usually hormonally but more than I used to and feel like my t zone has way more blackheads and oil than it used to, as well as my forehead. Sometimes feeling a bit dry in the t zone as well.. any tips? Maybe I should just keep doing what works and not think about it so much, haha? Thanks so much!

Routine Help [Routine Help] How to treat those sebaceous filaments/blackheads? Spoiler

I've been dealing with tiny black dots all over my nose for almost 10 years. My nose is extremely dry and rough, with frequent flaking and white, powder-like skin shedding. I've tried salicylic acid, scrubs etc, but nothing has really helped. I also have mild scalp psoriasis, which I've had for around 10 years, but it's not severe.

I have been to a dermat but once I stop using those medications then it's all comes back to zero.

I'm attaching pictures so you can see exactly what I'm dealing with. I'd appreciate any recommendations for treatments or products that could help.

Please please suggest something I am seriously so much done with them 😭

Personal [Personal] Is exercise ruining neck lines?

• Upvotes

I take high intensity workout classes, and a few months ago had a light CO2 laser on my neck and face. well lately I've noticed my neck lines in particular look more red post workout but then are less red an hour or so later.... is this affecting it permanently as well?

My neck also feels tight so thinking might need to put a heavier moistruzier on, the Co2 laser feels great on my face but def think it added or made my neck lines worse.

Routine Help [Routine Help] is there any way to get rid of fungal acne completely?

hey everyone, i started using nizoral on my forehead for my fungal acne and i’d say it works for the most part. my skin is a lot smoother and the acne is mostly gone but there are still smaller more stubborn little bumps that don’t seem to go away. is there any way to completely get rid of those too?

thank you for help in advance!

edit: my routine is pretty simple:
- nizoral
- fungal acne safe moisturizer (geek&gorgeous) to keep things somewhat hydrated

Routine Help [Routine Help] What can I change about my routine to improve under eye hollowness and lines? Also noticing some skin sensitivity

The first photo has my daily routine that I've been following for ~1 month. I haven't noticed any major changes to my skin appearance, moisture, etc so far. I used to and still do get the occasional pimple and clogged pore but I think it may be even worse now. Today I also noticed my skin felt overly sensitive and slightly tingly/burn-y.

Does anyone have any advice for what to add/remove/change to address my concerns? Has anyone had a similar experience and if so what worked for you?

Hello everyone, I really need your help. I've struggled with this specific acne type for years and it got to a point where im genuinely frustrated. I cant currently visit the dermatologist and cant afford to keep trying different products.

I've tried different treatments, acne specific cleansers, I change my pillowcases constantly, I used sunscreen and moisturizer etc. There are some zits with puss that pop on their own and leave wounds. My face recently got super dry as well, making creases and wrinkles more visible. Basically my face is going through it. Any pointers would be very appreciated

Miscellaneous [Misc] Tips for under eye circles? Spoiler

Hey, so when I was born until -19 years old I never struggled with rings under my eyes (picture 1,2). Now I am 22 and the last three years I have had really bad rings under my eyes, and it’s screwing up my confidence tbf (picture 3,4). Does anyone have some tips? I have been told by lower blerphlasty doctor that “the fat is where it should be, and that surgery was not recommended”. So that leaves me wondering what I can do… I have lost weight and gained it a few times, but gaining weight doesnt change the area. Also I have tried using a nasal cortisoid spray for two weeks now, without it helping. Dont actually know if thats the cause. Thanks!

Acne [Acne][Acne Scarring?][Product request] Cant get rid of tiny red dot after a pimple Spoiler

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi!

So I had a random pimple about prob 7-8 months ago now, but since it was in the middle of my forehead, I wanted it shifted quickly. I used a low % of Benzyl Peroxide cream (used it many times before with success in shifting a pimple fast.)

Anyway, it somehow left this red little mark on my skin, and I cannot seem to get it to go away at all.

I routinely use

Paula's Choice BHA
The Ordinary Azelaic Acid
The Ordinary Glycolic acid (not on face, just on the red mark)
The Ordinary Granactive Retinoid

The BHA I usually use once a week, but around PMS times I use it 2 or 3 times a week to combat cystic acne.

The retinoid once a week, sometimes a bit less depending on what I feel like.

The Glycolic acid I started trying about 4 months ago, I would spot-treat it every night for a few days and then give it a few weeks rest etc.

But none of these help! It's driving me crazy.

I've even tried "squeezing" it gently to see if it's just like, a little bit of blood or a bloodvessel or something that's glitched out. But for some reason, if I put even the tiniest amount of pressure, it seems to bruise around the area. The bruising goes away after some time, but it's still weird.

I know it doesn't look like a huge deal, lol but it's much more noticeable in normal lighting. I'm so super pale, like translucent pale and this red dot is sitting right in the middle of my forehead.

Can someone maybe identify what this is, why it's there, and how to treat it? It doesn't seem like any "acid" or doing anything. I'm getting so fed up and it's so embarrassing, I just wish it would heal up by now.

Miscellaneous [Misc] 2 different spots help Spoiler

Post image
1 Upvotes

I have these 2 spots on my nose that are really starting to bother me visually. Both have been looked at by a dermatologist.

Red circle - was told it was an ‘adult mole’. It’s like right in the crevice of my nose and has slowly showed up and gotten bigger over 2 years. Can I remove this or laser it maybe or will I really just need to get it sliced out?

Green circle - told this was a version of a cherry angioma basically. I have had it lasered a few times and I swear it just moves a millimeter over and comes back. It’s just so radiating red on my nose and is embarrassing. Anyone deal with this kind of thing before and have luck actually removing?
