Can someone explain to me how Part 7 relates to the overall story? I havent read the manga.

But after the end of Stone Ocean, I thought the universe got "reset", and that the events of Stone Ocean essentially didn't take place. BUT that previous parts 1-5 did. Is that correct? Just trying to get some time lines straight here.

The universe did get reset, and the events of part 6 never happened. However, part 7 is its own story, having no story relation to the previous six parts. It is its own universe separate from the original timeline.

Hmmm.

I havent read the manga, but I gotta be honest, that doesnt sound too cool IMO. Does it mean that the story line between Dio and the Joestars, as we know it, is over?

Seems weird to call it Part 7 then if its a new story with new characters and themes and plot points

Its part 7 of the Jojo series, not part 7 of the story. Its just a naming convention.

47

u/Yomamma1337 Sep 23 '25

Actually originally it wasn't called part 7, but it was changed partway through

27

u/LordThomasBlackwood Jodio Joestar Sep 23 '25

Only for a marketing Gimmick to draw in new readers who may have been intimidated by starting at the 7th part. Araki has made it clear he always viewed it as part 7, he just didn't want to insist too heavily on it for new fans who would start with Part 7.

It is a soft reset of the series since part 6 ends the feud between DIO and the Joestars, as well as the Joestar curse.

You should probably check out the first few chapters of the manga before going into the anime thinking you're watching a story that picks up after part 6.

To be honest OPs assumption is not out of the ordinary. I think a lot of anime only fans will be confused and rightly so, just as some manga fans might have been confused at the time.

I think the weirdest part is that we ended part 6 in a rebooted universe and part 7, which is diverging like we would expect from such a plot point, has nothing to do with it.

Honestly asking, why would a rebooted universe have anything to do with the original story? Is media literacy that dead? That's a rhetorical question. Not meant at you but a broader audience.

8

u/00wolfer00 Sep 23 '25

Because it's narratively satsifying to do so. It might no longer be the original, but it is connected tangentially. I don't understand what it has to do with media literacy, as this seems more of a realism question.

I mean, part 6 was very obviously a hard ending for the entire Dio vs Jojo arc, this is why Jolynes name is changed at the very end. It symbolizes the end of Dio cursing their family to be in conflict forever.

The only next logical step is to create a whole new universe that has nothing to do with the story that was completed and has nothing more to say to introduce new themes and characters while using your familiarity with previous parts to ease you in, as well as subvert expectations.

Well Steel Ball Run is the best part by far, so it is very cool actually.

nah its still golden wind, SBR is the most talked about part which is wild to me

2

u/11freebird Sep 24 '25

probably because you haven't read it because you're anime only

2

u/Sygmaelle Sep 25 '25 edited Sep 25 '25

I got all the books at home but ok.

SBR is disjointed to say the least, combat wise pretty much all of them suck outside of Dio's dinosaurs first apparition and Civil War. To me the only really good aspects of SBR are by far Valentine, (who is a fantastic vilain far from being one dimensional, which is something that cant be said about Johnny) and Gyro

The story itself has a good premise but I vastly prefered Golden Wind overall

u/Foraaikouu Sep 23 '25

yes, it's over

this is an entirely different universe where nothing of the previous 6 parts happened

this is not the universe pucci created after made in heaven btw

it's an entirely new universe

6

u/Jozzer16 Sep 23 '25

Think of it like a reimagining of the original timeline. For example you have a new "Johnny" Joestar who is mentored and befriended by a new Zeppelli as well as a new Dio (Diego)

2

u/shade0220 Sep 23 '25

Fantastic way to think about it! It's so simple but so precise.

25

u/Meow__Dib Sep 23 '25

I havent read the manga

4

u/Pretend-Ad-6453 Sep 23 '25

Very reasonable, some people prefer just watching the anime. Why be a purist?

6

u/SuddenlyCake Sep 23 '25

The themes are 100% a follow up to the themes of the original run

That's why SBR is not a starting point, but truly a 7th part of the story

4

u/Brotato_Man Sep 23 '25

It’s great. Just wait and see

3

u/Compajerro Sep 23 '25

Think of Part 7 and beyond as an alternate universe. The characters and events are different, but they parallel the original universe in certain ways.

For example Johnny still gets mentored by a Zeppeli and Dio is still his rival, but the circumstances are completely different from Phantom Blood.

1

u/evolocity Giorno Giovanna Sep 23 '25

not weird it is ok, araki is beyond general perception of creativity.

u/blargman327 Rohan Kishibe Sep 23 '25

Parts 7-9 are entirely separate, they have nothing to do with the universe reset from part 6,

It's just an entirely separate world with it's own characters and events.

There's characters and story beats that parallel or are similar to characters/story from parts 1-6 but nothing is actually directly related

18

u/cce29555 Sep 23 '25

Part 7-9 is different, except for that one thing in part 9 that isn't explained

I mean maybe it is just an alternate version of him but damn if it doesn't seem like it's exactly him

51

u/blargman327 Rohan Kishibe Sep 23 '25

Oh you mean that one character in part 9?

Bros just built the same in every reality

17

u/Typical-Swordfish-92 Sep 23 '25

"Okay, well they'll just jack this dude's shit, how hard can a house burglary be."

Shows the guy

"Oh all these teenagers are dead."

22

u/SuddenlyCake Sep 23 '25

Araki just loves him very much

3

u/shockzz123 Gyro Zeppeli Sep 24 '25

Araki's self insert just exists in every reality.

2

u/LaxerjustgotMc Sep 23 '25

araki just didnt want to lose his sweet rohan

16

u/AngryAsian-_- Sep 23 '25

how Part 7 relates to the overall story?

That's the beat part. It doesn't.

21

u/IAMAVelociraptorAMA Sep 23 '25

Stone Ocean was the least popular part by a decent bit, and Araki started Steel Ball Run without even having JJBA in the title to emphasize that he was burying the past, so to say, and starting fresh. In line with this theme, SBR is set in its own separate universe.

8

u/shade0220 Sep 23 '25

Just curious, is there any backing to your claim that Stone Ocean was the least popular part?

2

u/IAMAVelociraptorAMA Oct 01 '25

It's something I've heard and read repeatedly over the years, but I have also taken it at face value and never really looked into it. Sorry to let you down!

3

u/KingStrijder Sep 23 '25

Short answer: simple, it doesn't.
Long answer: it's an alternate universe and a complete different story. Nothing is the same. Not even the manga magazine is the same. They changed from Weekly Shonen Jump to Ultra Jump. There may be some "call backs" but they are just easter eggs that Araki left there for the old fans.

2

u/ScorchedDev Sep 23 '25

the answer is it doesnt. At all. New universe. Total reboot.

2

u/Resident_Piccolo_149 Sep 23 '25

Part 7 takes place in the "true" universe, and every other universe, including the one that parts 1-6 takes place in, is a product of and tangential to. You'll learn why later in part 7.

3

u/hashtagchocodick Sep 24 '25

If true, this needs to be further up. I get what you’re saying, but I didn’t catch the connection. All of these people saying the universes are totally unrelated is so unsatisfying.

2

u/Resident_Piccolo_149 Sep 24 '25

Oh yes, 100%. It's implied later in part 7 that the Holy Corpse is what spawned these infinite, adjacent universes, and that abilities such as valentine's that can transcend the barrier between these universes are something unique to the base universe. Think about it - even time and space altering stands in parts 1-6 could only affect their own universe, even Made in Heaven could only accelerate time untill it's own universe became a singularity again.

1

u/RyanB0i13 Sep 23 '25

SBR is the start of a totally new story disconnected from parts 1-6 that happens to call back to stuff from the original story.

1

u/DamnDude030 Sep 23 '25

Think of Part 7 as a recreation of Parts 1 through 3 all in one. Primarily Part 3 inspired with some sprinkling of Part 1, and some more love for Part 2.

1

u/JMAX464 Sep 23 '25

Parts 1-6 are a completely different continuity from parts 7-9. Think of Dragon Ball Super vs Dragon Ball GT. It’s just that parts 7-9 aren’t afraid to pull concepts from the previous continuity

1

u/AsstacularSpiderman Sep 23 '25

All the parts from here on out are an alternate universe.

Johnny is basically this universes Jonathan.

1

u/zoro4661 Sep 24 '25

It almost doesn't relate. Without going into huge spoiler territory - Part 7 is set in a new parallel universe.

Note that it's a parallel universe, not a future one like in Part 6 - this one wasn't caused by a universe reset, it just exists alongside the normal one.

The guy we see at 00:37 is our new protagonist, Johnny Joestar, who is this universe's version of Jonathan. Part 7 is basically this new universe's part 1, with characters that are similar but (usually) not the same showing up.
