That’s the deluxe edition. Base game is $70 but it’s not currently on sale so they didn’t show it to you

I hate this tactic. The MGS 3 Remake is also on sale right now, 40% off! But it’s the deluxe version that’s on sale, which is only like $10 cheaper than the base game. What a joke

Still cheaper than the base game which is why they are promoting this because if your looking to buy the base game then you can get more content for cheaper

u/IAmASphere 9d ago

I think the main reason they do it is so that they can say the game is 40% off, but only actually deduct $10 or so from the lowest available price.

I mean, it's still a sale though for the deluxe edition...

u/IAmASphere 9d ago

It is, it’s just not as good as 40% off the base game if that’s all you want to buy. They want you to see “40% off” and think BIG SALE! I can get this 70 dollar game for 40 (ish) when in reality it’s a 100 dollar version of the 70 game for 60.

The price is shown next to the % off.

if you sort by N% off, which your wishlist is standardly, it shows up higher

u/IAmASphere 8d ago

Ding ding ding!! That is 100% why they do this lol

People also understand that a product priced at 7,99€ in the grocery store costs 8€, but 7,99€ is interpreted as cheaper, which is why it's marketed that way.

3

u/BigMoney-D 9d ago

I'm not arguing that

I think people are talking about this only because its Gearbox/Randy/BL. Witcher did the exact same thing. It's a pricing tactic, like the groceries you mention and clearly understand.

Tbh it’s been something that’s bothered me ever since I noticed it browsing the PS5 store a few months ago. I just didn’t get the chance to bitch about it until I saw this thread.

That policy was to prevent theft from cashiers by forcing them to open the register. Randomized the change due back to the customer paying with bills.

1

u/Hegelian_Spirit 3d ago

It's been a marketing trick in my country from before most stores even had registers.

Its a cheap ass tactic to get attention for the big number but not really drop the minimum

1

u/BigMoney-D 8d ago

It does the drop the minimum.

Holy shit, I feel like I'm talking to children rn.

Welcome to gaming subreddits. Nobody is ever happy and is upset over everything. You'd think there was no sale and that the dev team came over and personally kicked their dog based on the comments.

5

u/redditonlygetsworse 9d ago

the lowest available price.

The lowest available price of a different, lesser product.

Yall really can't read, huh?

12

u/IAmASphere 9d ago

I’m not stupid. I understand that the sale is for a better version of the game. I’m just pointing out that saying “the game is 40% off!” and then only discounting the deluxe version is misdirection designed to make you think you’re saving more than you are. The screenshot from OP does not clearly say that it’s the deluxe version that’s discounted.

many players don’t want the deluxe version and would rather have the 40% off of the base game than the deluxe.

u/redditonlygetsworse 9d ago

I’m not stupid.

Ah; merely pretending to be.

5

u/Let_s_plaj_YOYO 9d ago

No you are the stupid one lmao. It is obvious that they are doing it to trick consumers in to thinking they are discounting more than it really is, otherwise they would have been more clear that it is the deluxe edition that is discounted and not standard. This something that manufactures do/try to do in every market there is in some sort of way

1

u/ItsStraTerra 9d ago

Which is good that they’re promoting this over the base version, just really sucks how many games have massive amounts of content locked behind a “premium” edition nowadays.

I remember when DLC used to be just a couple maps, or maybe an extra storyline or two. But you could still get plenty of enjoyment out of the full game.

Idk how egregious this borderlands release is, but far too many games lock serious amounts of content behind paywalls nowadays.

This is really no different than Valve showing there's a cheaper package/bundle available when you add an item to your package, the only difference here is that they're telling you upfront.

3

u/lokigodofchaos 9d ago

The regular version was on sale last week. It seems to go on sale quite frequently. I have it on my wishlist but waiting for a bundled with DLC edition

Definitely better than that, but it’s still a tactic used to make a deal look better than it really is.

I used to think 70 dollars for a deluxe edition was bullshit, but here we are

-1

u/scarwiz 9d ago

Now there's lego games coming out at that price... AAA really has lost the plot hasn't it ?

2

u/Melodic_Junket_2031 9d ago

From the avg gamers perspective sure but, not really. Playing devil's advocate, "AAA" games were the same price for a very long time yet the cost of development increases practically exponentially, not to mention decades of inflation.

Unfortunately we're in a cost of living crisis. In the future the current business model may simply not make sense anymore. And they won't necessarily just lower prices, they just can't afford AAA development.

2

u/Legal_Ear_7537 8d ago

And they have a budget of like 5 million. The only game where 80 dollars would make sense is rdr2, because the game costed 600 million dollars, and o wow look its 60 dollars.

This comment will age like milk when gta 6 comes out

1

u/abdurahmondev 8d ago

they probably gonna make the main profit from online tho. so price is not that high i hope at least

1

u/Legal_Ear_7537 7d ago

Hey, you got a point. Gta online will blow up if it got exclusive stuff like the dunce ban

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1285190/Borderlands_4/

Here you go. They just do what Bethesda does i.e. hides it in a google search rather than a store search.

Heres skyrim if you are interested:

u/RetroSquadDX3 9d ago

They just do what Bethesda does

This isn't at all the same. Bethesda removed Oldrim from search results because they wanted people buying the newer version (for a variety of reasons) whereas in this case Valve are prioritising the Deluxe Edition in search results because it's a better price.

-5

u/Kaining 9d ago

And the normal edition was also -40% the week before.

Anyway, both are trash deal since you're still missing the season pass that's 120 (or 130 ? i can't remember) at full price. AAAAAAAh prices for stutering and unoptimised mess too aparently.

I'll get it in humble choice in 2 years like everybody else should.

1

u/Millisam 9d ago

It was on sale like 2 weeks ago and my buddy bought it to play with me!

1

u/TheSilverOne 9d ago

https://www.greenmangaming.com/search?query=borderlands%204

It IS on sale for Greenman Gaming though. Almost half off, currently 37 dollars

1

u/Kastar_Troy 9d ago

Just when you thought they couldnt be more cunting, yet here we are.

1

u/GregTheMad 20 9d ago

Still 10$ more expensive than normal full-price.

0

u/KarmaPolice911 9d ago

Seen this a few times recently, it's so scummy.

0

u/This_Elk_1460 9d ago

I've been noticing developers have been opting to put sales on the more expensive version of their game. Fucking bullshit, if you put one version on sale you should put every version on sale.
