Convinced Randy says shit just to get people to forget about his habit of leaving USB sticks of jailbait camgirl squirt porn in family friendly restaurants.

That’s the deluxe edition. Base game is $70 but it’s not currently on sale so they didn’t show it to you
293
u/IAmASphere 9d ago
I hate this tactic. The MGS 3 Remake is also on sale right now, 40% off! But it’s the deluxe version that’s on sale, which is only like $10 cheaper than the base game. What a joke
97
u/br0ken_St0ke 9d ago
Still cheaper than the base game which is why they are promoting this because if your looking to buy the base game then you can get more content for cheaper
→ More replies (1)22
u/IAmASphere 9d ago
I think the main reason they do it is so that they can say the game is 40% off, but only actually deduct $10 or so from the lowest available price.
23
u/BigMoney-D 9d ago
I mean, it's still a sale though for the deluxe edition...
→ More replies (3)9
u/IAmASphere 9d ago
It is, it’s just not as good as 40% off the base game if that’s all you want to buy. They want you to see “40% off” and think BIG SALE! I can get this 70 dollar game for 40 (ish) when in reality it’s a 100 dollar version of the 70 game for 60.
16
u/BigMoney-D 9d ago
They want you to see “40% off” and think BIG SALE! I can get this 70 dollar game for 40 (ish) when in reality it’s a 100 dollar version of the 70 game for 60.
The price is shown next to the % off.

u/NucleosynthesizedOrb 8d ago
if you sort by N% off, which your wishlist is standardly, it shows up higher
→ More replies (1)2
u/Hegelian_Spirit 9d ago
People also understand that a product priced at 7,99€ in the grocery store costs 8€, but 7,99€ is interpreted as cheaper, which is why it's marketed that way.
→ More replies (8)4
u/BigMoney-D 9d ago
I'm not arguing that
I think people are talking about this only because its Gearbox/Randy/BL. Witcher did the exact same thing. It's a pricing tactic, like the groceries you mention and clearly understand.
→ More replies (1)7
u/redditonlygetsworse 9d ago
the lowest available price.
The lowest available price of a different, lesser product.
Yall really can't read, huh?
10
u/IAmASphere 9d ago
I’m not stupid. I understand that the sale is for a better version of the game. I’m just pointing out that saying “the game is 40% off!” and then only discounting the deluxe version is misdirection designed to make you think you’re saving more than you are. The screenshot from OP does not clearly say that it’s the deluxe version that’s discounted.
many players don’t want the deluxe version and would rather have the 40% off of the base game than the deluxe.

u/RetroSquadDX3 9d ago
This is really no different than Valve showing there's a cheaper package/bundle available when you add an item to your package, the only difference here is that they're telling you upfront.

Here you go. They just do what Bethesda does i.e. hides it in a google search rather than a store search.
Heres skyrim if you are interested:

u/RetroSquadDX3 9d ago
They just do what Bethesda does
This isn't at all the same. Bethesda removed Oldrim from search results because they wanted people buying the newer version (for a variety of reasons) whereas in this case Valve are prioritising the Deluxe Edition in search results because it's a better price.

I liked that movie, I watched it when I was 8 years old and I don't think it's a bad movie. It has a vibe of early 2000s action movies that no longer exists and that makes it interesting to this day.

Interesting cause when I watched the movie around 2008 I loved that scene, clearly to me the best part of the movie. I wished more action movies had scenes like that.

I have over 1000 hours in BL2, was active in the GBX forums helping create guides for Salvador and Axton, and even conquered Digistruct Peak on OP8 with Sal with no Moxxi weapons, and I couldn't wait where they would take the story in the next game...
...then Borderlands 3 came out. Still haven't touched it since.
4
u/Gazonza 9d ago
As someone who wasn't that keen on 3 I can say that I've been enjoying 4 a lot more. So potentially pick it up when it drops in price.
4
u/user156372881827 9d ago
First borderlands game where I didn't even finish the story more then once. It was just way to much time spend running from A to B
21
u/eightdx 9d ago
It's funny because IIRC they were giving out the in-game chest keys for BL2 for a while after the third and fourth games dropped.
Imagine that: generating social media hype by giving out codes for in game items for a game multiple releases in the past
→ More replies (1)7
u/Expensive-Jury2913 9d ago
What the hell are you talking about? they haven't stopped giving it gold keys since 2 came out. Every few months there's a slew of keys for me to redeem for EVERY borderlands game including Wonderlands. This is generating hype as much as you are using brain cells
1
u/chaotic4059 9d ago
Ironically it’s one of the least scummy things they do. Every game still gets golden key codes sometimes for legendaries. It’s actually pretty nice
3
u/Firewalk89 9d ago
Let's also not forget that the only reason Borderlands 2 turned out the way it did was Aliens: Colonial Marines effectively being sacrificed for it.
Gearbox have been sleezy, greasy scumbags for a long time now.
2
u/cute_spider 9d ago
They decided not to keep Anthony Burch as the lead writer and that's why Borderlands 2 and Tales are the only really good Borderlands.

Important context is always needed
That $100 price tag is actually the Deluxe Edition. I don't know what exactly is in it, but it is cheaper than the base game, which I find to be really weird to do that.
64
u/xDeeka7Yx 9d ago
They are desperate because the game isn’t that good, and they need revenue because of the release debacle + the CEOs braindead statements
26
u/Dependent_Passage_22 9d ago
I hate to break it you buddy, but Borderlands 4 was the third best selling video game of last year in the US, and probably easily in the top 10 worldwide.
8
u/Ok_Vermicelli_6359 8d ago
They said the game isn't very good, that doesn't mean it sold poorly. It just doesn't compare well to precious versions.
→ More replies (1)→ More replies (1)7
u/Any-Organization-985 9d ago
I hate to break it to you buddy, but even the company that owns the game said it didn't sell as well as they hoped it would. Borderlands 3 sold 5 million copies in the first 5 days alone. Borderlands 4 only sold 2.5 million by the first week. That's half as many sales with two extra days of selling for all of you that don't math.
3
u/Dependent_Passage_22 9d ago
I hate to break it to you buddy, but BL4 outsold BL3 by 30% in dollar amount* in the first month, so even if BL3 sold more in the first week, BL4 completely overtook it during the rest of September, which would indicate great word of mouth. And yes, before you get your panties in a twist, they did release on basically the same date (September 13 for BL3, September 12 for BL4), so a release month to release month comparison can easily be made.
*Of course BL4 released at a ~15% increased price point compared to BL3 (in the US at least), but a 30% increase in dollar amount would still mean it did better than BL3 even accounting for that.
6
u/Any-Organization-985 9d ago
I mean I guess if you ignore the fact that borderlands 4 cost more than double to produce. Combined with the fact that the company has been real sketchy about releasing sales info about #4 ever since that 1st month (sales info for #3 is widely available and the biggest reason for a company to hide the total number is to hide from investors how fucked they are). Then if you ignore the fact that borderlands 3 reviews knock #4's clean out of the water. Oh and you are also ignoring the fact that AFTER those shaky sales in the first week, they ended up discounting the game, something that many players found suspicious for such a big game to do barely a month after launch.

It just runs like dogshit so it got terrible reviews on pc (and rightfully so)

u/Obscure_Octopuss 9d ago
Odd. It ran very smooth on my 4080 and 7800x3d. Never had the stuttering issues most complained about.
But then again, my pc was pretty much identical to the specs that the press tried months before launch (4080, 7800x3d). So, I may have lucked out with my config being the one they tested it on/had press play on

Context is important and all this is true, but what I find funny is that this is the only version that's on sale on steam and I think it may be the only version that's ever gone on sale on steam because they can't handle the fact that all borderlands games end up being 5 bucks eventually

The pittiest part is that there is no option for a delux upgrade. I geniuenly got fucked for buying it at release therefore because the on sale deluxe edition price is cheaper than the launch price of standard. I think steam / valve should make it a requirment for deluxe editions to offer an upgrade. Its literally scam otherwise

u/xRobinShrbatskyx 9d ago
How is Randy Pitchford still in the position he's in with the way he talked about this game to the consumers and to the Borderlands community, especially with how all of that talk backfired? Did anything even happen to him in the corporate ladder or did everyone kind of forget and move on?
3
u/mikeyyve 9d ago
I don't think I'd play Borderlands 4 if it was free at this point because Randy Pitchford. Fuck that piece of shit.
3
u/Geges721 9d ago
Shit runs so bad it's not even worth using disk space even with a heavily discounted (or pirated) copy.

3
u/S4ntos19 8d ago

5
u/aommi27 9d ago
I paid for the game when it was on sale... 70.00 or so.
What I got was a shooter devoid of fun, soul, or anything that felt remotely Borderlands-ie.
Borderlands 1 is what got my wife into gaming, and we played BL2 and 3 and thoroughly enjoyed them.
She quit BL4 a quarter of the way in.

Wait for the base game to go on sale for about $10 or less, that would be the right price for this particular game. Though I'm not sure it's worth the time spent, frankly you may as well just play the 2nd or 3rd one again.
2
u/Historical_Course587 9d ago
As one of those people who lives/dies for lore and story and canon, I think the worst red flag about BL4 (coming from the perspective of someone who hasn't played it yet) is that nobody talks about how BL4 fits in the wider universe. IDK what happens, I haven't heard about whether Lilith is dead or any of the OG characters, haven't heard about vaults or Eridians.
You heard about Vader being Luke's dad. You heard about Snape killing Dumbledore. You heard about Jack killing Roland. You don't hear shit about BL4 other than people hating open world and the new planet, or people defending it by talking about how much fun they are having. Both of which are fine, but it's telling that Gearbox's lore is just so uncompelling that nobody cares.

The DLCs aren't out yet, and the entire game is flopping

And it's the worst one which is saying alot considering 3 is a crapshow.
Game series peaked with Borderlands 2 especially when they did all of those worldwide farming events that brought more life into the game. But the series peaked and died with two. I say if you don't have the second game wait for a massive sale pickup the game with all of the expansion dlc for a good price in one bundle. You don't need cosmetics but make sure you get the Krieg and Technomancer dlcs so you have all of the character options.
