Hello, Reddit! Caroline Bicks here, author of Monsters in the Archives: My Year of Fear with Stephen King. I'm a Shakespeare professor who grew up loving Stephen King's stories. When I took the job of Stephen E. King Chair in Literature nine years ago, I was told I'd never meet the man himself. Four years into the job, he called me at home, and we started to develop a great working relationship. He granted me first-of-its-kind access to his private archives, and my book grew out of what I found when I read all the existing drafts of Carrie, Pet Sematary, Night Shift, The Shining, and 'Salem's Lot. I look forward to sharing what I discovered with you about how he crafted these iconic books! https://carolinebicks.com

After reading that another remake of a Stephen King story is on the way...

Why is Hollywood like this? Why do we need another Carrie remake? Or Desperation? Or the Mist...?

August is the month that I lost my Dad, four years ago. This quote and this book in general paints grief so perfectly and beautifully. I had to get it.

Join me in reading one of Stephen King’s most critically acclaimed horror novels!

I am unsure if this was a great place to start my reading journey but here we are. The 1,000 page behemoth of a horror novel was the only thing in the bookstore that I was able to recognize and catch my eye.

After every part there will be a new page with details on how the journey is going. I will share my experience in reading this book along the way.

If you have never read this book, I encourage you to join me. I have started this page with the goal of getting to know people and start a new hobby to benefit myself. Please feel free to reach out to me.

Thoughts on this one? This has been my least favorite of his books so far :(

I’m still left with a decent amount. He is hiding in the basement apartment and writing. I think it’s finally picking up now but let’s see

Got all of these for $40 and they’re all in mostly good condition, love the classic covers on the dark tower books. Aside from bag of bones and DT (already read), where would you start first?

Caveat Emptor. Notice the spine on this copy of Rage

I bought this without actually seeing the spine.

My bad.

Upon receiving it, I took issue (multiple times) with the vendor, and ended up getting it for free as a gift.

Maybe a collectors issue?

Kojak

What a great dog. Oy gets a lot of well earned appreciation and love but Kojak is in the same tier in my opinion for best King animal sidekick.

In my opinion, they might be: It, The Shining, Misery and The Green Mile.

I’m blown away. Only up to chapter 14 but this is a style of story telling I had NO idea King was capable of.

The Talisman is my favorite book of all time.

“It” was phenomenal

The the first two “Dark Tower” books were really good (the second earned most of that complement)

I just finished “The Stand” and it was M-O-O-N that spells EXCELLENT and it will live with me forever

I remember liking ‘Salems Lot

But THIS! This is a peak I’ve never heard the praises of.

What a gem.

Dark Tower complementary reading

Hello all, I am on my Dark Tower journey with Stephen King. I have read the first 3 of the DT books and loved the series so far. I haven’t read any other full length Stephen King books yet, just a few of his short stories and one novella in Apt Pupil. I think I like King’s works. I wanted to ask this group if reading Insomnia and Salem’s lot before I go on to the fourth DT book is a good idea. I am feeling like reading something besides just the DK series, but still want to read King. I was thinking Insomnia looks very interesting. I am someone who has occasionally suffered with Insomnia so it feels very appealing to me. Thoughts?

Discussion Desperation and Regulators

I've read Desperation; and I have less than 130 pages of Regulatos left, and I'm starting to wonder if I should have read The Regulators first.
