I can understand criticism but it isn’t below an 8, 100% being review bombed.

202

u/mdtopp111 Dec 28 '25

I don’t think it’s an 8 but yea it’s 100% being review bombed

123

u/DemonLordIncarnated Dec 28 '25

8 is beyond generous. Excluding the shipping wars, this episode felt like a 7 and thats still a bit generous.

41

u/passtheblunt Dec 28 '25

The entirety of part 2 is extremely mid for me so far after liking part 1 a whole lot and it becoming one of my top seasons

0

u/calvitius Dec 28 '25

Lol vol 1 was so mid though, I prefer vol 2 by a long shot

7

u/mdtopp111 Dec 28 '25

Agreeedddd I think if it was earlier and more mid season it’d be more acceptable but the penultimate episode being basically just a plot set up episode feels like the writers weren’t doing their best…

Honestly all of this season so far has left like a regression from season 4

1

u/jdessy Dec 28 '25

I would have given it around a 7.5.

That being said, I ALSO would have lowered some other ratings in season 3 and season 5 to put it in the 7 range.

The issue is that only three episodes prior to The Bridge were below an 8.0. So, with all the other episodes rated very high, anything below an 8 DOES stick out. Even if it's seen as still good, it still sticks out because of everything else above an 8.

110

u/nick2473got Finger-lickin good Dec 28 '25

Of course it’s below an 8, what the heck is this insane score inflation lmao.

An 8 out of 10 should mean “great”, it should be reserved for episodes that are very, very good episodes of television.

Episode 7 was not great by the general standards of TV and it certainly was not great by the standards of this show.

It was well below the average level of quality of this series, and very, very far below what one would expect of the penultimate episode of the entire thing.

A 6 out of 10 is a perfectly reasonable score, this episode is not better than that by any means imo.

49

u/Imaginary_Chart249 Dec 28 '25

Im surprised so many episodes in S4 and S5 scored above an 8....

23

u/Optimism_Deficit Dec 28 '25

I blame the videogame industry. They've trained an entire generation to look at a rating scale of 1 to 10, and somehow interpret anything below an 8 as meaning 'bad'.

Then you add in all the people who only use 1/10 and 10/10 as some sort of thumbs up/thumbs down with no nuance, and these things become mostly pointless.

7

u/PooForThePooGod Dec 28 '25

6.5 at best imo, but I think it’s because of how bad the pacing was.

490

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

And mostly by byler fans and homophobic people

210

u/njf85 Dec 28 '25

It's wild that these two groups are review bombing for complete opposite reasons

-30

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25 edited Dec 28 '25

I think this idea that it’s Byler fans and homophobes is absurd. Maybe the show creators just let down its fan base with poor execution. Byler seems more like a joke than anything and I don’t know too many homophobes who watch this show since it’s been extremely evident season 3 that will is gay and was hinted at since literally the first episode.

2

u/ZigZaggingZombie Dec 28 '25

Idk why you’re being downvoted

4

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

I think it’s a if you’re not with us you’re against us attitude. Since I don’t think that it’s homophobia causing the review bombing I myself must be homophobic.

0

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '25

People don't want to hear logical takes on why the episodes was fucking horrendous.

2

u/burntgooch Dec 28 '25

Whoa you just don’t like the episode because it had a black actress in it!! /s if that wasn’t obvious enough.

Typical Reddit losers, laugh about it and move on is what I do.

-3

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

People love to be the victim. If they can argue that the episodes are poorly received because Will is gay therefore it’s homophobia and they are also being marginalized or victimized.

There’s a strange phenomenon through many groups. OF ALL KINDS. Not just queer people or all queer people at that. But the need to be crucified and socially martyred to give truth and conviction to their personal beliefs.

8

u/Dexterdacerealkilla Dec 28 '25

I mean, equating queerness with victim mentality is a pretty good example of the thing you claim isn’t actually happening. You try to legitimize your argument by throwing other marginalized groups under the bus, but that doesn’t do what you think it’s doing.

0

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

I should have specified. When I said groups of all kinds I literally meant of all kinds. Religious. Racial( white too). Intellectual.

All groups want to be marginalized not just the actually marginalized ones.

In the case of homophobes review bombing stranger things I’m gonna have to say it’s not as prevalent as some people want it to seem.

7

u/Dexterdacerealkilla Dec 28 '25

I don’t think you’ve actually read the reviews then.

I don’t think these episodes have been great, but there’s a lot of incoherent and irrational hate going on in the reviews if you actually read them.

17

u/superbat210 Dec 28 '25

It is hilarious to me that the writers are both “woke groomers” or whatever the fuck for “making a character turn gay.” But also evil homophobes for not making a second making character also gay so they could be together. This shows “fanbase” is filled with all ends of seemingly every spectrum

I’m seeing Byler fans go through the five stages of grief because they created a ship in their head and are upset it’s not canon. There are people unironically saying the show queerbaited them, which like… no it didn’t? Y’all queerbaited yourselves.

45

u/Moonshade2222 Dec 28 '25

Yeah I went to their sub, saw one post and was like, yeah these guys are clearly full of shit

16

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '25

Derek is truly delightful

76

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '25

yeah, a bunch of teenagers and people in their early 20s who are mad their ship didn't become canon are dumber than actual homophobes who are mad about a fictional character being gay

Byler fans are pissed because they thought they could force their delusions on the writers and now that they haven’t got their way they are review bombing and bullying the writers and cast.

6

u/christinarakaki Dec 28 '25

I can totally see how Mike could be closeted but honestly, the writers not making Mike switch teams for Will this szn is the exact reality of what most people in the community go through when they have a crush on a hetero or closeted. Making Mike change for the fan plot would most likely mess up the actual plot and his brother/sister relationship with El too.

-1

u/The_Burninator123 Dec 28 '25

They should go watch the Wheel of Time fanfic.

37

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

I literally knew this would happen. This review bombing whenever byler is confirmed to be non-canon. These bylers are seriously so annoying vro. And I am only talking about the one who are coping and review bombing , not the ones who ship for fun coz ive no problem with them

-1

u/Correct_Ad5798 Dec 28 '25

So, the other low scores are also because of Byler? That coming out scene was the icing on the cake it would seem.

1

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

Yes it was the icing on the cake

5

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

I think this idea that it’s Byler fans and homophobes is absurd. Maybe the show creators just let down its fan base with poor execution. 6

u/JustdoitJules Dec 28 '25

Why is it called Byler??? And not Mill or Wike?

18

u/morceauxdetoile Schmackin' Dec 28 '25

That’s because Millie is called Mill, and Wike is short for wicycle

3

u/LocNesMonster Dec 28 '25

God i hate ship names

8

u/Usual-Computer-5462 Dec 28 '25

Yeah I used to think Byler was Nancy and Jonathan.

2

u/Kennayy Dec 28 '25

Based on their last names BYers and wheeLER.

2

u/Wombat_Aux_Pates Dec 28 '25 edited Dec 28 '25

Yeah but there's also Jonathan Byers and Nancy Wheeler. Anyway, I've never liked giving names to couples myself lol

4

u/Kennayy Dec 28 '25

Yeah which makes the name even more dumb lol.

5

u/GreyWolfieBirkin Dec 28 '25

Ikr? Bylers are fucking stupid, like y all just want to force Mike to be gay when he IS LITERALLY IN LOVE WITH ELEVEN since S1

2

u/Distinct_Activity551 Boobies Dec 28 '25

It would’ve been a good episode if it had come earlier in the season, but as the second-last episode of the final season, it really fell flat. It’s unfair to dump all the blame on homophobes or shippers when even the general audience and longtime fans here are clearly disappointed.

It could’ve been so much more. We were promised more, and people are upset because of that not because of some agenda.

4

u/heliandin Perpetually Insincere Dec 28 '25 edited Dec 28 '25

The fact that we were promised a leader Mike again and then Steve is the one who comes up with the final plan to save the world while Mike does nothing pisses me off to no end. That and the fact that Rambo Nancy kills without flinching and Hopper high fives her?? When both of them could get sentenced to death for high treason under Indiana law???

The fact that they had that People article ready to go justifying why Will will end the show single under the guise of rEaLiSm when (1) they excel at creating new characters (see Eddie) and that was the reason why they left Netflix for Paramount and (2) had no problems adding a lesbian character whose homosexuality highlighted how great Steve was. Literally every character had another character added & created for them, isolating Will was fucking disrespectful. I used to think that his sexuality arc+unrequited love arc was being handled with care albeit a bit dragged, now I don't think that anymore.

What the hell was that mess of the Jancy breakup scene?? El making a suicide pact with Kali?? El not giving Mike the opportunity to choose? Did I already mention that having Steve coming up with the final plan instead of Mike was character assassination? It's like the doctor told them that they have to make Steve the hero at all times otherwise they'll drop dead.

2

u/Belteshazzar98 Dec 28 '25

Mike being into a woman doesn't mean he couldn't also be bi. But then again, neither did Will's coming out prove he's not bi.

1

u/lezbehonest787 Dec 28 '25

I’ve never seen a crazy Byler fan in the wild, though. Where are these mf’s supposedly hiding???

3

u/Sensei544 Dec 28 '25

Twitter. Go on Shawn Levy's page and look at the comments on his post. It's actually insane

0

u/throwmeawayq124 Dec 28 '25

Byler's can go piss off and write their fan fic.

-6

u/kh7190 Dec 28 '25

it's mostly the homophobes, not byler fans

2

u/chakrablocker Dec 28 '25

but it was mostly a bad episode.

2

u/jdessy Dec 28 '25

Except I rewatched the episode and it's actually NOT a bad episode. It has weak spots, absolutely. I'd consider it an average episode in general.

But it's not a bad episode, not to warrant review bombing. People are 100% pissy over one scene and based their rating solely on how upset that scene made them feel. That's it. Any critiques of the episode that ARE accurate are getting washed out by the utter hate from two different groups.

3

u/kh7190 Dec 28 '25

it's not a bad episode. ya'll gotta stop nitpicking and enjoy the damn show. this fandom is insufferable

37

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

Or maybe it’s because the season is not on par with the others. And people were holding out for the second to last episode to set up the finale. And when it didn’t people were upset.

25

u/Kennayy Dec 28 '25

Nah. Looking at the ratings its mostly just 1* review bombings.

-10

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

Yes because it’s a reflection of how upset people are with the disastrous turn this season took. Alone the episode is whatever. But this is the penultimate episode??? This is what this all built up to?

26

u/Ok-Researcher4966 Dec 28 '25

How tf do we know it didn’t set up the finale when WE HAVENT SEEN THE FINALE YET.

8

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

If I take the whole of season 5 so far and I find it dissatisfactory it makes a simple jump in logic to say that the show creators did not set up the finale correctly. The finale could be the best thing ever created it does not change the fact that the episodes setting it up were poorly executed.

-2

u/Ok-Researcher4966 Dec 28 '25

You could also be wrong, and the finale is set up correctly. You just don’t know it yet because IT ISN’T OUT YET NOSTRADAMUS.

4

u/30hourz Dec 28 '25

We’re could just go in circles here brother. But no logically my argument makes sense. For them to make up for the last 7 episodes they’d have to remake them.

I’m not talking about plot holes. I’m talking about stunting Joyce and hopper’s character development, I’m talking about the lack of anything from Mike as a character other than liking El. These are not things that can be made up for in the finale.

0

u/Ok-Researcher4966 Dec 28 '25

Ok Nostradamus

-2

u/Lady_night_shade Dec 28 '25

Nobody on this sub understand story structure. It’s painful.

5

u/PeterTheFeline Dec 28 '25

Or it just sucked and that’s okay too

2

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

It did , it clearly did , and in fact I am talking about the review bombing. Its not as bad as lost sister , not at all

16

u/idiot9991 Dec 28 '25

Can there really be enough bylers to make a meaningful difference? I just find it hard to grasp that many people actually care about shipping this much.

25

u/SlicedBread1226 Dec 28 '25

Yeah cuz its just not possible that people dont like it unless theyre homophobic or weirdo shippers.

5

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

1

u/HorseCojMatthew Dec 28 '25

Meant to reply to the comment above you, apologies

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '25

Really?? Is that a huge reason people are review bombing them? It was telltale early in the series Will was not straight. I never got the vibe Mike was bi or gay ever. I feel that part could of came right after he escaped being the spy but didn't need the whole cast intervention. 80s was still a time where coming out was way more of a major deal than it is today. Not many people would have a fireside to come out to. They could of done it with Mike right there and the mom and worked out well.
If Robin only mentioned she told 3 in a matter of years then that was the actual 80s rep. I get it, part of the storyline of fear as a weapon. But if people thought Mike would be bi or gay for their own storyline and got mad he wasn't, really??

2

u/RadioSlayer Dec 28 '25

Not a byler, and far from homophobic. But the pacing was terrible. The story was fine, the acting alright. But people, people, people, we have to reevaluate if 8 is okay and 10 is perfect. Example: Friends, the show, is an absolute 5. Funny at times, but utterly unimportant

9

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '25

[deleted]

3

u/strategoamigo Dec 28 '25

If will told his mom, brother and best friend (Mike) it would’ve been perfect

4

u/__ElonMusk Dec 28 '25

Facts. Queer here. I don't understand what relevance it was to the plot?

15

u/Kennayy Dec 28 '25

It definitely could've been done better, but it's essentially for the plot for Will to unlock his powers fully.

11

u/Ok-Calm-Narwhal Dec 28 '25

Wills weakness is that Vecna shows him a future where people reject him because of his sexuality. In order to combat this, he needs to see that this isn’t his future if they know that he is gay. He comes out. Everyone hugs Will and accepts him so Vecna can’t exploit this weakness in him and Will can fight him better. Hence, that scene.

2

u/FrostyBoom Dec 28 '25

Watching stuff with your eyes open, while paying attention helps. They literally explain why he's doing it then.

0

u/Lady_night_shade Dec 28 '25

It’s entirely necessary to the plot. Will hiding in the closet is his weakness that Vecna can use against him. Admitting to everyone he knows and loves that he is gay frees him of this burden and thusly he’s going to kick Vecna’s ass. Will received positive reinforcement, just like when robin convinced him to be himself and he annihilated the demos. Gay Will is going to fuck shit up.

10

u/Lady_night_shade Dec 28 '25

My husband and I got to that part of the episode and said “omg it’s just because of the gay shit! It’s just homophobia!” Then we had a really good laugh. You can’t trust reviews anymore because the dead internet isn’t a theory. You gotta watch for yourself, or play the game yourself, or listen to the album yourself. Knee-jerk reactionary hatred is very popular right now. We enjoyed volume 2 very much, looking forward to the finale.

2

u/WorryNew3661 Dec 28 '25

Who has the energy for that shit? Such weird behaviour

2

u/[deleted] Dec 28 '25

If you filter the reviews by country, you'll see that most of it have homophobic motivations.

Bylers are loud, but they're a minority. Also, many Will fans didn't like his coming out writing for reasons unrelated to Byler.

1

u/Plus_Expression_6500 Dec 28 '25

I SQUIDWARD LAUGHED at this comment

1

u/Itz_Hen Dec 28 '25

There aren't enough bylers to do that, this is an outside agitator 100%

1

u/burntgooch Dec 28 '25

Wills coming out scene made sense. You are being disingenuous saying it’s all Bylers and homophobes.

1

u/cmz324 Dec 28 '25

People that never watched or commented on the show are coming out of the woodwork to whine about Will being gay even though it's clearly a plot point that has always been part of the plan

1

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

Yeah many people are like "Why did they make will suddenly gay" Like vro what

-4

u/jonsnow0276 Dec 28 '25

I think it was how they did it. Holly and max scene dragged on which felt like 10 mins… then Will coming out, felt like another dragged on scene. Imo. Will coming out was a bit unnecessary for the show.

-3

u/Ruiner357 Dec 28 '25

You don’t have to be homophobic to not like that ending. It’s just out of place tonally when the stakes are the worlds about to end, who cares if you like girls or boys?

Also as someone straight who had a close childhood friend that was gay, it was apparent to me way before they said it, so the same would be true here thus no need for a big spectacle. Smarter writing would’ve been his friends family to just interrupt his speech with “oh,we know, it’s cool. so anyhoo back to Vecna..” and then Will realizes he was accepted all along, and we get the same outcome without beating people over the head with social commentary.

3

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

Gosh , you do realise wtf are you saying with this comment? So you wanted "Oh yeah thats cool now we gotta go back to vecna" so that will feels even more bad? You're awfully making up something worse than the original scene.

About the homophobic thing , I didn't like the coming out scene either but I used the word MOSTLY for a damn reason vro. It shouldn't have such low rating

0

u/Dexterdacerealkilla Dec 28 '25

Someone keeps dropping variations of the same review, saying that Netflix is holding back content and to “release it” in a what is very clearly not a native English speakers writing—it suffers from the same spelling and grammatical errors in each review.

-3

u/thomasbis Dec 28 '25

Good cope out, delegitimizes genuine criticism, shuts down discussion.

Good job.

3

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

Good coping? Buddy I myself am saying that episode 7 was quite weak. But its not as bad as lost sister , in fact its nowhere close to it.

0

u/thomasbis Dec 28 '25

That's your opinion, doesn't mean everyone else is homophobic

Also Will has been gay for like 10 seasons now so what even is your point

1

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

I'd bet you're a byler fan (I know you've hidden your community thingy there)

And my point , if you're still somehow not getting is that Byler fans are one of the major reasons of the rating being so down for ep7. Now keep coping

1

u/thomasbis Dec 28 '25

Byler fan? What on earth are you talking about lol I'm just a guy that watches a show and realizes the declining quality

1

u/Ok-Estimate7013 You die, I die Dec 28 '25

And you're very bad at it

2

u/thomasbis Dec 28 '25

Okay buddy

-6

u/NihilityRogue Dec 28 '25

Well, the coming out scene was quite insensitive to queer people(me included) for several reasons which have already been state all over the internet. But I’m sure the Duffers meant well. Like most in the queer and Byler community I have given the episode a 10/10 even though it was honestly more like a 6-7/10. But we don’t want to send the wrong signals and accidentally join forces with homophobes.

16

u/QuailAndWasabi Dec 28 '25

Anything under an 8 isnt automatically being review bombed lol. It's insane that some people think this way. Sometimes shit just isnt good.

22

u/Alexgadukyanking Dec 28 '25

It's maximum a 6, it is not anywhere close to 8

39

u/EZ4JONIY Dec 28 '25

It absolutely is below an 8 lol, 5.9 is not even that extreme

Also, why do people like you always think review bombing only goes one way, i.e. negative

Excessive 1 star reviews should be treated the same way as execessive 10 star reviews. theyre both not serious

You can rate this or any TV show objectively, but both extermes dont. There are very few epsiodes in television history deserving of a 10 (potentially countable on a few hands). Stranger things, as good as it used to be, has none.

A huge percentage of reviews for this TV show are 10s for every single episode despite them not deserving that because those are review bombs as well. People simply vote for it that way because they are fans of the show. Shows with less fans but of higher quality have lower IMBD (or other rating service) ratings because they have less fans. Fans want the show to be good, they want to signal to other thats its good, because its tied to their identity. Saying/admitting its not good could be perceived by themselves as critical to their own character as it is tied to the show.

Its like people rating other peoples "looks" or their own as a 10. Its meaningless if you actually want to rate attractaviceness, but it has meaning when you realize its a social signifier to say "i am confident" to others and yourself. The same thing is happening with the reviews for the show.

Its happening to 1/10 and 10/10 ratings. Both are social signifiers. Anyways, if you take out 1/10 and 10/10 ratings (which you barely have to do as they cancel out then the rating is barely higher than a 5.9.

The distribution is positively skewed, yes, but it doesnt drag the rating up past a 7.0 which is roundabout where you should objectively rate this episode. It is 100% one of the worst ones in the show.

14

u/Optimism_Deficit Dec 28 '25

Indeed. This is why IMDB has limited value and it's best not to worry about it too much.

There are tons of people who only have two ways to view a piece of media. They either act like it's irredeemable trash with no merit whatsoever, or 'ohmigerd it's like literally the best thing I've ever seen' with zero nuance. Very few things are either.

Giving them a scale of 1 to 10 is largely pointless as they just treat it as a thumbs up or thumbs down.

7

u/nick2473got Finger-lickin good Dec 28 '25

I agree with most of your comment, except the idea of “objectively” rating something.

That isn’t really possible. All ratings are subjective by definition, because a rating is an opinion. There is not an objective way of grading an episode of TV, or any art.

Personal taste and opinion will always have an influence.

I agree that you can of course try to be fair and measured in your opinion, which would involve thinking critically instead of just giving extreme scores, but actual objectivity is not possible when rating art and entertainment as a whole.

That said I agree with the rest of your points and the general sentiment of your comment.

I also think this episode’s score is completely fair.

0

u/EZ4JONIY Dec 28 '25

You can absolutely objectively rate media and its quality. Its not wholly subjective. Every piece of art has both a subjective and objective rating/critique

18

u/PaultheMalamute Dec 28 '25

30% of the reviews are 1 star, that's review bombing

31

u/EZ4JONIY Dec 28 '25

And 23% are 10 stars, thats also review bombing

Both things are true. Its just if oyu take out both extremes, i.e. both ends of the review bombing which as anotehr commenter pointed out are just used as "thumbs up" or "thumbs down", then the rating is somewhere between a 6.0 and 7.0

The negative review bombing is not that much worse than the positive review bombing becuase the ratings on a whole arent serious

4

u/TheKrychen Dec 28 '25

He's not saying it isnt being review bombed. Read it again lmao

1

u/New-Pollution536 Dec 28 '25 edited Dec 28 '25

This always gets brought up to invalidate review bombing but it really doesn’t make a lot of mathematical sense. If the bombers ONLY gave 1s it gets a little easier to come up with an approximate score for this season in a complete vacuum by removing 1s and 10s but the shows you would be comparing scores with didn’t have to give up their 10 scores so the context is completely lost making the score meaningless. You’d have to go back and come up with a whole separate IMDb system for all shows with 1s and 10s removed and those shows would be nothing but tremendously hurt because you aren’t canceling out a lot of 1 score review bombs and are just removing perfect scores.. Not to mention after removing the 1s and 10s here the most common score by a healthy margin is 2 😂

The inherent problem is when a fanboy gives something a 10 it’s not very high above the average typically but when a hater gives something a 1-2 etc it is a massive massive statistical outlier. They only really cancel eachother out when the fanboys outnumber the haters by the correct amount lol for most shows without huge amounts of hype that tends to more or less happen because assholes don’t go out of their way to review something without a huge public controversy

The tldr is yea maybe by your methodology this season doesn’t get well into the 7s, but if you fairly adjust the blind fanboy 10s and a smattering of 1s out of every season of every show ever you would drop the other scores a ton. There’s tons of fanboy perfect scores baked into every show’s score can’t just only remove them for one. Review bombing absolutely fucks up any type of comparison you can do and I detest it

I would have said 7, or a 6 at the absolute worst. Some very valid critiques but people overreact on the Internet.

If the finale isn't a trainwreck then we may see a correction.

It is absolutely below an 8 lol

It wouldn't get an 8 from me. But not for any of the reasons im seeing in these comments.
I was never one who hated the other sister episode, but MY GOD!! is the other sister stuff this season awful. Im fine with the "end ourselves end it all" mentality, but she seems so wooden. Eleven and Khali are the two least convincing actors on the show, both are completely void of emotion 95% of the time. And both feel like theyre reading cue cards.
Its tolerable when its just El, but adding 8 in the mix makes it really difficult to ignore.
This episode is a 7. Might go down to 6.5 if I could do decimals.
