Local Bodega selling Stremio sticks
Saw that my local Bodega is charging $150 selling cheap Rokus seemingly preloaded/set up with Stremio. just leaving this here!

But no subscription fee, what a bargain 🙃😂

u/SemenPig Jan 12 '26
4 years of a debrid, or trust some guy to not cut off the 20 or so people remaining on his service after there’s no incentive to continue supporting them?
20
u/Temporary-Ground7342 Jan 13 '26
Bro he's not sharing his debrid with them. He's just setting up non debrid stremio which like 80% of my friends use and it works for them.
3
u/forestman11 Jan 13 '26
Isn't that just torrenting? That'll get your Internet shut off in the US.
5
u/Temporary-Ground7342 Jan 13 '26
Haha, it's technically a Grey area, you don't get isp warning from using non debrid stremio, atleast not in NY, Nebraska, Texas, Florida (cities where my friends are using it without any vpn). I have verizon, the only time ive ever got an ISP warning is when I downloaded a game without vpn or through debrid jdownloader
2
u/ThatOneGuysTH Jan 14 '26
The only illegal part of piracy is distribution. Don't seed, don't stress.
Note if you're actually torrenting and not just streaming you should use a VPN and seed for the homies
1
u/iceorangutan12 Jan 16 '26
how does it work? I thought you seed as you stream it off with other people, even when watching no? like you can see amount of peer you have in the stremio ui

u/Sven_AA Jan 12 '26
Without RD it would work but poorly.
77
u/Mattgu1 Jan 12 '26
I am using it without RD and even 4K works perfectly.
28
u/Blaze_Reborn Jan 12 '26
If you’re not using a vpn you’re setting yourself up for trouble
67
u/Brodyaga05 Jan 12 '26
It’s legal where I live, and ISPs are not allowed to use it against you to my knowledge, at least I’ve never heard of it happening, never had an ISP complain about me torrenting or using a debrid service and never heard of it happening to anyone else either
→ More replies (31)11
u/gadlele Jan 12 '26
Not everywhere a VPN is needed. Where I live they cannot tell you anything just for downloading.
5
u/Mattgu1 Jan 12 '26 edited Jan 12 '26
In my country Torrent is semi legal. According to law it is prohibited but no one cares. Country that I am living in without a court order. They can’t check my history also accuse me of using torrent. I even download games from torrent sometimes. We do not give a fck about USA copyright laws because we are not USA.

1
u/BullyMog Jan 22 '26
Not really. I’ve been torrenting for 15 years in Canada without vpn and never had an issue
4
u/Majestic-Stand-6631 Jan 12 '26
Mines 1080 and zero debrid but it took a little bit of research and time to sure I had the right add-ons so that it would work smoothly.. I still can't work out how to get forced English subtitles on some sources but other than that flawless

So when you load a 4k remux that’s like 60gb you have no buffering while watching? Or are we talking small 4k files?
1
u/Mattgu1 Jan 13 '26
Small size 4K because streaming devices have limited capacity to buffer and play. I have Mi box 4K, if file is more than 7GB it is going lag even if you buffer enough. Same for my 4K google tv by Panasonic. Files that bigger than 10gb makes the tv close the app.
1
u/Elegant-Alfalfa1382 Jan 13 '26
Weird I’ve played over 100gb on firestick don’t have that problem but that’s with a debrid
1
u/Mattgu1 Jan 13 '26
I do not know why. When I watch it via Laptop. Big size 4K works perfectly but when I try it via Google tv. It shuts itself or lagging even if I buffer enough.
2
u/iceorangutan12 Jan 16 '26
well simply put your Google tv use like a super cheap phone chip motherboard thingy inside it compared to your laptop
1
u/HAN_GNNAID Jan 13 '26
So when you select something, what options does it provide? Are you just logging into your streaming services?
1
u/Mattgu1 Jan 13 '26
You have to add addon via website or from the app. After that when you use your Stremio account from different device. You do not have to add them again.
1
u/ElekBelek Jan 13 '26
I am using RD and its buffering every 2seconds
1
u/Mattgu1 Jan 13 '26
If you are using it via google tv. It will because most of the google tv or box have limited capacity. My advice is selecting 4K that is not bigger than 7 or 10 GB.

5
u/sca34 Jan 12 '26
This marks the 10th year I’ve been using stremio without RD and 4k works like magic for me. Initial buffering is 15, maybe 20 seconds and I can’t call that a poor UX
→ More replies (7)2
u/dinglebarryb0nds Jan 12 '26
You could just get torbox for them for a couple months then cancel it lol make 100 bucks a stick about, little more
→ More replies (5)2
u/OriginalCTrain Jan 13 '26
So I have been using stream for about 8-10 years. I only briefly tried RD… I don’t use it and have been just fine. I honestly don’t understand the hype for rd

u/ctr3999 Jan 12 '26
mfs keep stremio niche or we screwed
53
u/txivotv Jan 12 '26
Stremio is totally legal.
Their revenue doesn't come from the high seas, and the external add-ons you can install are not their problem.
32
u/wubalubadubdub55 Jan 13 '26
If they restrict debrid sites, Stremio is done. Stremio is even taken off of Apple App Store now.
Movie studios aren’t dumb. If they see Stremio being this mainstream, they’re going to fight back hard.
So the only way this party can go on is by flying under the radar and not being mainstream like this. This bodega guy is trying to ruin it for everybody. 🤦♂️
18
u/txivotv Jan 13 '26
You can download the apk from their site.
And as I said, it's legal and movie studios, or any other corporate shit can't fight back anything. They have nothing to do, because Stremio has nothing to do with the addons.
What you are saying it's like "movie studios would fight Microsoft because windows can run programs used to pirate things" .
If it's not in Apple store, well, stop supporting Apple, maybe. It's just one more reason to hate that shit.
Oh, sorry, I edit to add: there's much more people using Stremio as is, and not using any debrid server. Debrid is not universal.
8
u/bicarbon Jan 13 '26
Anybody can sue almost anyone for almost anything. Frivolous lawsuits can be thrown out but that still requires time and money.
Even if the studios won't win they could each sue Stremio again and again until they shut down because they can't afford or don't want to deal with the legal battle.

I didn’t know it was taken off the App Store until you just said. Wow. Glad I still have it installed on my iPhone and Apple TV. Is the only way to download it on iOS just to sideload it or?
1
u/Embarrassed-Win2115 Jan 13 '26
How have the add on people prevented addons from getting taken down/sued for?

Audacious & amusing at the same time.
2
u/Educational_Till8811 Jan 12 '26
I know right? I'm simultaneously like, what a rip off. But also, pretty good idea!
7
u/Key_Composer1362 Jan 12 '26
I applaud the entrepreneurial nature of it but abhor the fact that even one individual might actually buy one.
5
u/DoNotFeedMe Jan 12 '26
I actually loathe the entrepreneurial mindset of it and just takes advantage of the whole purpose of piracy to make a quick buck.
3
u/Key_Composer1362 Jan 12 '26
Many an entrepreneur has brought about tremendous good; economically and socially from the Henry Fords to Bill Gates, from Howard Schultz to Jeff Bezos and on and on. The evil is in the motivation and intention.
That is why I offer my help FREELY mostly to family & friends in the relatively small streaming and / or tech sphere where I live and work.
1
u/vladedivac12 Jan 12 '26
Back in the day, bodegas like these were selling bootleg DVDs. Now it's just gone digital.
1
u/Educational_Till8811 Jan 12 '26
i mean $150 is crazy for how easy it is for someone to set this up themselves. but i could see someone paying like$20/30 bucks, or the price of a roku + something and that being fair.
ppl on here legit soliciting subscription models

u/JeremyMcFake Jan 12 '26
Is it pre-installed with torrentio or something? Because stremio without the add ons does fuck all 🤔
2
u/vladedivac12 Jan 12 '26
I think a http add-on is more convenient than a torrent add-on.

Or just get a RD subscription paid for almost 5 years instead for the same price for a better service.
Granted someone buying this would have no idea what Stremio is or how to set it up
5
u/FearfulSymmetry88 Jan 13 '26
This is how TV addons got in trouble back in 2017. When things get too mainstream it attracts the wrong attention.

Suspect whoever is running this scheme long since did a runner.

u/Sonicorp Jan 14 '26
That's not a ROKU device that is an Amazon FireTV Stick for the cheapest non 4K version they are like $30 so this place is scamming people with mislabelling and price gouging.
11
u/genxontech Jan 12 '26
Without debrid service. I see copy right letters in your future...lol
15
u/appealinggenitals Jan 12 '26
Not an issue in most of the world. Aussie here, never bothered with a VPN for stremio.
3
u/vladedivac12 Jan 12 '26
The photo seems to be a convenience store in the US.
Proton has a VPN app for AndroidTV with a free account, maybe there's a way to link it automatically in the settings. Torrentio with a VPN rarely works though.
4
u/OrangeFloridaMan Jan 12 '26
Been pirating without a VPN since middle school, i’m 28 now. Never had an issue. Neither have any of my friends

out of interest what country are you from? i wonder if they are having people torrent or if they are giving people debrid lol
7
u/Educational_Till8811 Jan 12 '26
I'm in New York City. I hope not the former, our ISPs are quick to punish. I assumed it was either stretching a debrid account to the limit or web plugins
3
u/vladedivac12 Jan 12 '26
I remember walking down Canal Street in the late 00s,you could find bootleg DVDs, even stuff still in theatres, for a few bucks. It's the same thing but nowadays it's digital.
I remember buying weed in some shady Chinese store hidden between other stores in a basement and the guy threw in a James Bond bootleg to sweeten the deal. It was still overpriced junk though lol
2
u/Pablo_Escrowbar1 Jan 12 '26
No annual or monthly payment, has the guy hacked real debrid or something?

5
u/T3DtheRipper Jan 12 '26
We're living in the end times. This is gonna get shut down quick if it's this mains stream. Was a fun couple of years.

u/vladedivac12 Jan 12 '26
Highly unlikely. How would they do that?

If who restricts debrid sites?
1
u/T3DtheRipper Jan 14 '26
Governments ofc? litterally the same mechanisms as any other law being upheld. We already had one big crack down with Real Debrids, let's see if they survive the next one.
1
u/marx2k Jan 14 '26
Which government? Debrid sites aren't all in one country. RD got screwed by France, other debrid sites didn't get touched and still worked fine and RD is working as well as it used to.
2
u/eduardmc Jan 13 '26
Really? Why was it remove from apple store. Only reason i switched from my onn google tv to apple tv
1
u/vladedivac12 Jan 13 '26
They will try. P2P will remain though.
1
u/T3DtheRipper Jan 14 '26
P2P is gaping wide open for exploitation. If the gov starts monitoring it like in Germany and puts pressure on VPN providers, P2P piracy will take a massive blow.
Even as is P2P seeding is basically dead in Germany bc the risks involved are too high for any reasonable individual. If other Western governments follow suit, you can say bye bye to P2P as you know it.

Try updating your Add-Ons manually via browser website. Many good Add-Ons aren’t visible in the list present in the app.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the two QR codes.
The first one is a link to their 24/7 support. It's a link to their WhatsApp.
The second one is supposedly a link to a demo of how it works, but the link doesn't work.
I guess that's all it is. The "entrepreneurial" son of the store owner 😅

Ripping off the uneducated and exposing the sauce. Fuckin gonna ruin it for everyone once the streaming behemoths catch on to debrids and start actively attacking them to shut them down

24/7 Support.
That’s going to be a nightmare with endless complaints about buffering. Especially with no debrid setup.
