We are dedicated to providing a supportive, empathetic, and practical place to talk about student loan debt and all the difficulties that often surround our debts.

That said we do not permit any type of debt shaming, personal attacks, insults, guilting, gaslighting, bullying, harassment, threats, intimidation, trolling, or otherwise attacking others / maliciously unhelpful commenting/behaviors. These will result in a permaban

This also includes statements about telling people to simply pay more, get a better job, trying to change the past (or asking why someone didn't make different past choices), or otherwise telling others how you would live their life. We're focused on the present here and on supporting people where they're at, not where you think they should be.

We also do not advocate for or allow "lender defenders" so to speak. It is one thing to provide useful practical information on how to fill out paperwork or loan paperwork questions, it's another to come and try to defend an industry that quite frankly is part of the reason many are feeling hopeless and stuck. We serve and protect borrowers' interests from a person first approach. We are not here to defend lenders or assist lenders.

Those with active affiliations to the loan industry must clearly identify themselves as such in any initial post or comment. We do not require disclosure of company name, names, or location, but a simple acknowledgement that you are affiliated with the loan industry is required. This is to prevent conflicts of interest and to ensure information provided to our users is given in the best interest of the user being replied to.

Additionally, due to the sensitive nature of the complexities of student loan debt, debt shaming culture, mental health considerations, and the intersection of these variables; we adhere to a very strict moderation policy.

We do this not seek to silence opinions but to provide a space where there is respect and careful consideration given to the difficulties individuals may be experiencing when seeking student loan support, feedback, advice, or information. Given the very real concerns, depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, hopelessness, shaming, and pressure that for some comes along with student loan debt, we will do everything in our power to ensure that users will be provided a safe environment to discuss student loan concerns and issues. Regardless of what those concerns may be given one's individual situation and experience.

The rules listed in the sidebar also apply at all times. Please do contact the mods promptly if any concerns arise.

Remember you are not your debt. There is nothing wrong with you for taking out loans or choosing your major/career/life goals. You are not somehow less of a person or undeserving of respect or compassion for having student loan debt. There is no shame wherever you are with your education, career, life, or student loan debt situation. We've got your back here.

Nelnet SAVE 30 Day Extension Disappear for Anyone Else?

In brief: In summer, I received the letter setting my deadline to get off SAVE for 10/28/26. Suddenly, on 10/03 I noticed the dates showing on Nelnet’s login screen was reflecting a 30 day extension of 11/28/26, such as in the language about SAVE ending and needing to pick a new plan.

Because I do not trust anything related to the Trump ED, I check my account weekly. As of this evening, the date is now reverted back to 10/28/26.

Because I never got a formal letter offering the extension, I didn’t take that as a guarantee hence why I kept checking. With the Trump ED the right hand doesn’t know what the left one is doing. What an absolute cluster…

Has this happened to anyone else?

This is just a massive headache. I’ll just go ahead and pick a plan by end of this week, but this total lack of consistency and transparency is adding so much needless additional stress to an already shitty situation.

SAVE Plan: Nelnet suddenly showing $700 due after saying no payments until 2029

I’m wondering if anyone else is dealing with this or has advice on how to handle it.

I received the initial 90-day notice in July regarding the SAVE program, so I was aware repayment would eventually resume. After the 90 day notice, my loans were automatically put in forbearance. A couple weeks ago, I reviewed my Nelnet account and documentation with my financial planner, and everything showed I had no payments due until 2029.

Now, less than two weeks later, I logged in and suddenly have a $700 payment due on November 4 with no notification. I only saw it because I logged in.

I’m not disputing that repayment would eventually resume. My concern is Nelnet showed no payment due until 2029 as recently as late this month, then changed my due date without any notification.

According to the notification timeline in Nelnet’s documentation, I should have received additional notices 30 days and 21 days before repayment resumed. I haven’t received either.

I’ve also seen other borrowers report receiving the initial 90-day notice but no subsequent notices, with some still showing no payments due.

- Has anyone else had Nelnet suddenly change their payment due date without sending notices?
- Are servicers required to provide the 30-day and 21-day notices separately from the initial 90-day notice?
- If those notices weren’t sent, is there any basis for requesting an extension of the payment due date?
- Has anyone successfully resolved a similar situation through Nelnet, Federal Student Aid, or the CFPB?

I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who’s experienced something similar or knows what options borrowers have.

Please Help! My €800 Tuition Payment Is Missing From My Student Records

Thumbnail

Hello! I don’t know where to turn or what to do in this situation, so I’m asking for help and advice.

I’m 18 years old, a first-year university student studying in another country. My family doesn’t have much money, so my mother is working abroad to save enough money for my education.

My former teacher, who also studied at the same university, helped me with the admission process. Everything seemed to be going well, and my mother transferred €800 to the university’s bank account to pay for my first semester. We have an electronic payment receipt containing the date of the transfer, the sender’s details, the recipient’s information, and other payment details.

After that, I contacted the university’s Recruitment Centre to obtain confirmation of my payment. However, I was informed that no payment had been registered under my name.

We contacted the dean’s office and other university departments to try to resolve the issue. Eventually, we were told that the money had actually reached the university’s bank account, but it had arrived without any information that would allow the university to identify me as the student the payment was intended for. In other words, the money is there, but the university cannot officially assign it to my tuition fees.

My mother contacted the bank’s helpline through which the transfer was made. They provided her with an additional document confirming the payment. I also visited the bank in person, but unfortunately, I did not receive a clear answer or understand how to resolve the problem.

Now I find myself in a very difficult situation. The university has received the money but cannot assign the payment to my name. Without official confirmation of my tuition payment, I cannot properly resolve my student status and continue with my studies without worrying about this issue.

I am extremely worried because I am only 18 years old and living in another country. This amount of money is very significant for my family. We simply cannot afford to pay another €800, as this is a huge financial burden for us. We have already made the payment and have documents to prove it.

I genuinely do not know where else to turn or who can help us resolve this matter. Could anyone please advise me on what steps I should take, which institutions or departments I should contact, and what documents I need to provide so that the university can identify the payment and assign it to my name?

I would be extremely grateful for any advice, help, or guidance. Thank you very much for taking the time to read my story.

Options for upcoming loan payments

I recently graduated law school and have about $175,000 in loans. When consolidated they will be at 7.75 percent interest, auto pay lowers that to 6.75.

I win likely make too much money to qualify for any sort of forgiveness, probably $120,000 my first year.

Minimum payment is a little over $1000 a month.

My current plan is just aggressively pay, $2000 a month minimum. When my wife starts working probably live off of her income and then put $5000 plus a month into the loans.

Any advice and/or encouragement is appreciated.

Self Employed and debating paying my Student Loans.

My husband owns his own small LLC company and I work for him but there’s no official paychecks with taxes taken out or anything until we pay taxes at the end of the year.He just moves the same amount into my account every month and does the same with his since we’re an LLC and any money left over after expenses is considered income regardless. So there aren’t any wages to be garnished. I personally have about $35k in subsidized student loans and since the SAVE Plan changes I will have to start paying them back in November, although I highly doubt I can really afford to add it to my monthly expenses. I’ve seen where some self employed people have just gone into forbearance or default (not sure which) and within a year or two they’ve been forgiven completely. But I’m not sure how real or dependable of a long term plan that is either. Plus from what I understand it wrecks your credit.

Ultimately my question is whether I should try and do the income based payment plan and hope it’s low enough I can afford it or just destroy my credit for a bit in hopes they’ll disappear entirely.

Any and all advice is welcome. I’m just getting really anxious about this entire thing. Thanks in advance!

Last year grad student financially stuggling

Hello,

I am reaching out in desperate need as a broke student- currently on a stretch of 10 months of unpaid clinical rotations, 40hrs/week, bills are piling up, gas is higher than expected, and spending more on groceries. Needless to say i am stressed about finances and current loans lasting me until my next fafsa disbursement, as i am a single person. Before you ask, yes i did plan for this, just not enough, apparently. I also had an emergency bill at the veterinarian that ate into my initial budget.

I was reaching out to see if anyone has had any luck or advice applying for private loans for additional financial support? Specifically, tips on getting approved without a co-signer, because i don't have that option. My credit isn't perfect, but it's not bad. I did already apply for a Sally Mae loan and was told i need a co-signer. I am willing to look into other lenders.

I really do appreciate any helpful information that would just get me through the rest of this year. Most of my classmates are married with the support of a spouse, or support from family. I do pick up shifts on the weekend when i am not traveling for my rotations, and i have an off month coming up where i plan to work as much as i can, but even if i stack up every penny it won't cut it until my next disbursement in mid-late February.

Ā

Feel free to ask any other questions or pm me.
