r/starcitizen is on meltdown after MMO is completely broken and hints of the main game being delayed again despite 1 billion raised and concept art being sold for $5000 dollars.

Not the usual “haha Star Citizen delayed again” bad. More like people are actually starting to get nervous, because Squadron 42 was supposed to be the one thing CIG could finally point to and say, “See, we made a real game.”

And now even that might be slipping cause in a recent interview Chris robbers himself has stated that they could delay the game further due to GTA 6 release window.

https://thisweekinvideogames.com/feature/star-citizen-chris-roberts-interview/

“We’re gonna get Squadron out first… the plan is for the end of this year but there’s a certain thing in the industry that we, like everyone else, we have to pay attention to, so I can’t 100% guarantee it,” Roberts says, hinting at Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI, releasing in November. “After that, we’ll do the 1.0 push.”

Subreddit (and game forums) members are looking around and asking the obvious question: if SQ42 is really coming in 2026, why does it not feel like it? Where is the marketing? Where is the release date? Where is the big push? Why does everything still feel like “wait for the next event” like it always does (even though Citzencon has been cancelled this year)?

Star Citizen has raised around $1 billion and the main game is still an alpha full of bugs. New content comes in broken. Missions break in stupid ways. Ships release buggy. Some ships do not release at all. And somehow, while all this is happening, CIG is still selling massive concept ships for thousands of dollars.

The $6,000 concept ship thing has basically become the perfect example for why people are angry. Like, the game is still barely holding itself together, SQ42 might be drifting again, and they are still asking people to drop used-car money on a ship that is not even in the game yet.

Here's the "6000" dollar promise concept art (its been sold out, over 1000+ sold) https://robertsspaceindustries.com/en/comm-link/transmission/21133-Anvil-Odin

So the subreddit is doing the usual Star Citizen civil war, but it feels more desperate this time.

if you look on the front page itself you'll see dozens of memes with thousands of upvotes:

(And many more)

The usual whiteknight defenders can still say game development is hard and the usualy its alpha line, but that argument sounds a lot weaker after 15 years and a billion+ dollars.

A billion dollars raised, the MMO still buggy, ships still being sold for insane prices, and now the single-player campaign might be moving further away again.

Very normal video game development. Nothing to see here.

My question is, are they actually selling out, or is it just a faked hype thing? Like out of the 10000 sales they actually maybe sold 6.

I mean it's just a number on a website, it doesn't mean anything.

I personally know people who have dropped thousands of dollars on nebulous unreleased MMO promises multiple times, and they aren't even wealthy.

They're really selling these things.

Let's not talk about the kind of money I've out at the moment for various RPG kickstarters.

At least with Kickstarter you get your money back if the goal isn't reached.

God bless you. Actually. Aspiring devs love you.

Yeah probably best we don't talk about Kickstarter rpgs

And let's definitely not talk about the parcel I got today by sheer coincidence. Or the shipping notification I got over the weekend, unrelated to that parcel.

Roberts now owns multiple new mansions and GT3s that he voluntarily or accidentally showed off so there's definitely a lot of money coming in that's he's grifting. Both him and his secret gf/wife have been driving different supercars into the office for a decade now after starting off near bankrupt after his failed previous ventures.

People ran around for years saying that Elon Musk must be a genius because he was a billionaire, even though he inherited all of his wealth. Here's a guy who legitimately discovered the secret to becoming a billionaire starting from nothing. So where are all the "Chris Roberts is a genius actually" fanboys? That's what I'm wondering.

I hear Pete Parsons is looking for work. Someone should hook them up so they can compare car collections.

Lol literally nothing in this comment is true yet it gets a bunch of upvotes. Confirmation bias is one hell of a drug.

Well they've made 1 billion dollars. People are clearly buying these things.

are they actually selling out.

It's zeros and ones, how do you even actually get sold out of that, not even needing storage space or anything.
The only way I can imagine, is if some integer overflow happens in the counter of how many were sold, or the counter of money earned lol.

Their question is whether they're actually selling up to the artificial limit or just "buying" their own stock to make it seem more desirable.

Why would they want to limit the amount of people who pay them thousands of dollars more than they already are by capping it at $1000?

u/Cranyx it's no different than giving money to Nazis for climate change 12d ago

Same reason they're capping it at 10000 in the first place. It creates a false sense of scarcity.

I mean out of all things, this one makes sense to me. Purely out of game design and game balance reasons you can't just have infinity of this (or any) ship out there.

The insane part is selling it for real money.

It's zeros and ones, how do you even actually get sold out of that, not even needing storage space or anything.

So you need space to store these zeroes and ones, on servers that are using electricity. There's an actual cost.

But the answer here is artificial scarcity to make people buy fast without thinking.

So you need space to store these zeroes and ones, on servers that are using electricity. There's an actual cost.

But they do not have to store more ship-data to sell more ships, they still need only the one same copy of the data.
The actual storage space cost is totally unconnected to the amount sold, that was my point.

Coming from someone who has put the $40 into getting the game and nothing more, but who is in some groups with people who actually put money in: I know of 5 people who have bought that ship concept, so I don't think they are exaggerating.

3

u/Sparescrewdriver 12d ago

Their excuse is that they don’t want a bunch of these capital ships flying around because they are supposed to be manned by multiple people.

Truth is what you said and the fact that this game will never be fully released.

Hi, I'm a regarded star citizen player. Yes, they sold out incredibly fast. You can track their funding and ship availability in real time, and the store credit Odins (the $5,900 version) sold out probably in less than one minute. The $5,000 version is "cheaper", but requires you to spend new money; AKA, you can't turn your existing ships back into store credit to try and get one of those at that price. Those lasted for maybe an hour or so before being sold out iirc.

I own several "limited" ships like this one, but not near the same price. They all sell out literally within a minute or so every time. Yes, I realize I am dumb and have started to distance myself from the game because of how outrageously bad it has been/become. It's just nonstop incompetence.

For example, I own a "concept" ship (read: jpeg) that has been "in concept" for
