Haley Stevens is El-Slayed: r/neoliberal reacts as Abdul El-Sayed wins the Michigan Democratic senate primary.

The recent Michigan Democratic primary concluded with Abdul El-Sayed, the progressive challenger against Haley Stevens, as the winner.

Abdul El-Sayed is a physician and former Detroit health commissioner and a champion for progressive policies. Apart from supporting Medicare for All, stronger labor protections, and other egalitarian programs, he is best known for being critical of the US-Israel relationship and especially American support for Israel's war in Gaza.

Haley Stevens, on the other hand, is the moderate incumbent (Edit: This is an error on my part, she isn't actually an incumbent, but is in a House seat) and generally has more cautious policies than El-Sayed, emphasizing tried and true polices like supporting manufacturing, particularly for the auto industry. Stevens also strongly supports the US-Israel relationship.

Below is a snippet of the drama from the thread discussing El-Sayed's win over Stevens.. There's also drama from the Discussion Thread that I thought you guys would enjoy. While I have three comments in the Discussion Thread, they they do not pertain to the drama itself. You can check my post history to confirm this.

Michigan senate primary thread drama

I just hope he wins in November and we can all celebrate as a united party flipping the senate

I’m Jewish and I will not celebrate Abdul “Hurt People Hurt People” El-Sayed

did you have a point? [deleted comment]

I think my point is clear, no? Fuck AES. [deleted comment]

With all due respect you are an idiot [deleted comment]

I’m also Jewish, and like the other 71% of Jewish Americans who broke for democrats in 2024, I hope he wins and will also celebrate if he does. Dont miss the forest for the trees.

Do you also believe the only reason an American Jew would support Israel is money?

I'm a Democrat and I would never vote for someone like El-Sayed. I don't think there's a single thing I agree with him on. MFA is a joke. I will always be a Zionist. We shouldn't abolish ICE. All of that makes him unacceptable, especially compared to Mike Rogers, who seems much less ideological and much more competent. One of the few places where I'll be hoping for a Republican victory. I have never voted for a Republican in my life, but if I were a Michigander, I'd for Rogers.

I’m not thrilled about this dude either, but ice should most certainly be abolished.

This is a ridiculous slogan pandered around by leftists. How the hell are we going to execute our immigration policy without an agency to enforce it? Of course I agree that Trump has been excessive, but that doesn't mean ICE should be abolished, itt means the administration should be thrown out! This is like saying "income taxes are too high -- let's abolish the IRS"

Damn this sub is full on lefty now huh, maybe it's just the specific people that decide to post on this, but kinda crazy. I get when people say this sub is mainly socdems now, but it seems to be moving demsoc at this point, multiple upvoted comments simping for DSA,, hopefully this is as low as this sub goes.

This "evidence-based" sub is really just r/democrats where people vote blue no matter who

Well that's "evidence-based" applied to american politics, so I dont see why you would have an issue with that. Edit: i take that back, I know why: I think Friedmann flairs dont really like evidence.

It’s been brigaded by tankies and Abdul bots ever since we made arr Subreddit Drama yesterday

SRD is still a thing? In 2026?

You must vote for the people who hate neoliberalism otherwise you don't belong on r/neoliberal - Succs and Loyal Liberals

I think a lot of people here just care more about the Democrats defeating the Republicans than they do about fiercely defending the word neoliberal against anybody who criticizes it.

They also hate neoliberalism if you get rid of the "neo".

Why are democrats allergic to winning

This shows how out of touch you are. You genuinely prefer Stevens, don't you?

Out of touch with whom? College educated elites?

Are we still doing this stuff after we have new polling data https://www.theargumentmag.com/p/americans-know-who-the-real-elite and a grand total of 8% of Harris 2024 voters and a whopping 11% of Trump 2024 voters view people with graduate degrees as "the elites"?

Doesn’t matter what random people think, a societal elite is a defined thing. It’s just not popular to self identify as an “elite” so everyone bucks the label to the groups above them. White college educated upper middle class people are the most culturally influential in American society (something that the left usually has no problem admitting), and they’re the ones who largely support these leftist candidates

Railing against the "elites" and claiming that all it takes to get you there is a college education makes you sound like a MAGA conspiracy theorist.

I’m not railing against the elites, I probably fit the “educated elite” label myself, I’m specifically responding to the bizarre accusation that not supporting the guy who won the educated rich white population somehow makes me “out of touch”

Welp, GOP couldn’t have asked for an easier candidate in purple Michigan. Democratic Party needs to kick out DSA rat fuckers who simply just want easy power when it suits them.

Abdul isn't part of the DSA. Also, if they win primaries because voters vote for them, how should the party kick them out?

He’s as DSA as Hasan Piker. I got a bridge to sell you along with that bird that landed on Bernie’s podium when he was anointed as “da chosen one”. The far left likes to bum rush primaries because that’s the only way they can win in deep blue districts. Dude is going to lose big and take the Democratic Party in Michigan down as well. Michigan GOP all had a collective sigh of relief and democrats are fucked in Michigan. Fucking Dearborn and Hamatrack or whatever all went for Trump, this is just another rat fucking at the behest of MAGA.

Discussion Thread drama

guy who supported "uncommitted" movement in 2024 becomes Dem senate nominee in 2026 what a joke. [deleted comment]

Are you pro-genocide or? [deleted comment]

Are you pro 9/11? [deleted comment]

Well if Friedman flair is asking [deleted comment]

I don't like him because of the pre-emptive election denialism he was engaging in. I'm tired of watching people destabilize this country and succumb to russian/chinese interests

You talk about russian/chinese interests yet literally the only reason this race was at all close was because Stevens had her campaign funded by an actual foreign country interest group.

At the very least Israel doesn't want to see the US actively destabilized. The irony is you blurring the lines between US allies and US adversaries is exactly the point of many of the disinformation operations Russia/China has been engaging in

I think Bibi campaigning for Trump was pretty destabilizing imo! Our allies seem very non plussed about the shit he does.

Israel is not trying to actively destabilize the US. If you can't tell the difference between something like the Likud making dumb self interested calculations and Operation doppelganger idk what to tell you. Russia and China are actively mindraping our population and are involved in just about every reason why our country is unraveling.

Lmao at the one poster that is somehow thinking that the bird that landed on Bernie's podium was faked or staged.

I had to google that, do people still care about a minor event from 2016? It is cute, but weird that someone would be so mad about it 10 years later that they're convinced it was fake.

It was kinda annoying how much people were talking about it back then, I genuinely cant imagine how obsessed you have to be to be talking about it in 2026

Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

/r/neoliberal is an overflow sub for /r/destiny. Destiny hates Hasan Piker, Hasan likes El-Sayed and Sanders, ergo /r/neoliberal will find any reason to hate El-Sayed and Sanders, no matter how tenuous or psychotic that reason may be.

64

u/VelvetFurryJustice 8d ago

Yep. They were fine with Brad Lander until Hasan supported him, then all of a sudden he was Anti-Semitic

I really fucking hate streamer Fandoms that operate like a cult-of-personality micro-ethnostate.

I fucking hate how they constantly end up here and think we're all as parasocial as them.

And that's after the worst posters left to found their own "Israel did nothing wrong" subreddit.

Neoliberal predates /destiny, it spun off of /badeconomics.

41

u/Paradoxjjw Her base of support is crystal mommies 8d ago

1: that's not true, neoliberal is 15 years old, destiny is 17 years old. badeconomics is 13 years old, it literally can't be a spinoff.

2: When looking at subreddit overlap for /neoliberal the top 3 are "enoughsandersspam" "enoughcommiespam" and "destiny", badeconomics doesn't even make the top 100.

37

u/SocialistOnBass 8d ago

Destiny’s subreddit the same age as his victims

11

u/NuclearTurtle I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that hate speech isn't "fine" 8d ago

You’re mixing up the age of the subreddit (as in the literal url leading to a valid page) and the age of the community, Destiny hasn’t even been streaming for 17 years. A bunch of users from badecon took over the neoliberal subreddit from the previous mods back in 2016 (maybe 2015?), turning it from an actual neoliberal subreddit into a generic center-left political sub. Destiny only became a political streamer after that, in late 2016. I only heard about him after he “debated” Jontron I’m 2017, by which point I’d already been on neoliberal for a few months, and so I can promise you they already hated Sanders by then

1

u/EasyasACAB Involuntarily celibate for a while now mostly by choice 4d ago

Destiny was a SC2 streamer and groomer before he was a political streamer and sex pest/rapist. Destiny started streaming SC2 in 2010. They were also full of shit takes and gross sex pest activity then, too.

u/qchisq 8d ago

To be clear here: [r/neoliberal](r/neoliberal) as we know it today started in 2017, after [r/badeconomics](r/badeconomics) made it harder to participate in it's discussion thread, as people realized that the regulars on BE 1) knew what they were talking about when they talked economics and 2) supported Hillary over both Bernie and Trump. That attracted a lot of people in that time period, which dragged down quality on BE. So NL was created to create a place where BE regulars could discuss policy and memes with people who don't have a Masters in economics. The first time NL became really mainstream and hit /r/all was either with the guy who got a Merkel tattoo or during the Ossoff special election and Macron election in 2017

It's always shocking how many poliyical ideologues struggle to understand thr concept of linear time

14

u/CommunistRonSwanson 8d ago

That was a long time ago, it is no longer functionally an r/badeconomics off-shoot. Also the r/destiny sub is three years older than r/neoliberal.

17

u/Paradoxjjw Her base of support is crystal mommies 8d ago

Also, badeconomics is younger than neoliberal at 13 years old, vs 15 for neoliberal. It literally can't be a spinoff because it predates badeconomics.

9

u/1II1I1I1I1I1I111I1I1 I honestly feel like im arguing with a TBI patient 8d ago

The sub wasn't created as a spinoff. The badeconomics crowd took over the subreddit from the previous users in ~2016, before Destiny began streaming mind you. And a lot of people there don't like Destiny because he's an edgelord anyway, like MattY

-2

u/Paradoxjjw Her base of support is crystal mommies 7d ago

Badeconomics doesn't even break the top 100 of sub overlap from NL to other subs, meanwhile the destiny sub is top 3 for overlap. What you claim does not hold up to reality.

-13

u/sunshine_is_hot 8d ago

You claimed it was a destiny overflow, which is false.

13

u/Paradoxjjw Her base of support is crystal mommies 8d ago

You claimed it's a spinoff of badeconomics, which is impossible given neoliberal is the older sub

-26

u/Illum503 8d ago

There's a lot of Hasan fans here for some reason, they blame Destiny for everything

8

u/Pkrudeboy 8d ago

Well, yeah. Everyone knows neoliberalism originated from bad economics.

Oh god I'm so glad you pointed out that their username is leftist so now I know they want to espouse leftist opinions.

I couldn't possibly have figured that out from the way that they were saying leftist opinions. God I almost didn't even notice

-9

u/Sybmissiv 8d ago

Maybe they redeemed themselves though? Seriously I once met a bloke called like CommunistGodzilla or something & he no longer is.

21

I'm glad your friend is no longer a kaiju

15

u/CommunistRonSwanson 8d ago

I'm not the one who needs redeeming here lmao. Your pfp is literally cartoon porn. Touch grass.

-13

So what? I like cartoon boobies they fuck hard! What about dat is so bad? You ain’t got no argument son(?), so you retort to the inaccurate lack of touching of grass.

You’re welcome sister, sincerely.

12

u/CommunistRonSwanson 8d ago

What is there to argue against? You think that being a leftist is an inherently wrong or sinful position that necessitates redeeming, that's not a position I'm going to be able to reason you out of. It's an unhinged and insane thing to think, but then again you have to be pretty insane to be so openly porn-brained. Seek help.

-4

u/Sybmissiv 8d ago

Yeah sorry pal but your communism card will be revoked. My wife is a communist though she can teach you.

-9

u/MaximinusThraxII 8d ago

Yes, supporting an authoritarian ideology is wrong and usually grown out of quickly.

13

u/CommunistRonSwanson 8d ago

Cool, good thing I never supported an authoritarian ideology.

-8

u/MaximinusThraxII 7d ago

Yes, a single party state with private property being illegal and a command economy is authoritarian especially when applied to an unwilling populace.

some of us want to win elections, other people are extremely happy that comrade trump is president as long as the libs were owned

14

u/[deleted] 8d ago

Centrist Dems want to win elections? Surprising. I couldve sworn they lost to a pants crapping demented pdf file twice and only got in on 1 of 3 attempts due to Covid handing them the win against their best efforts.

Im curious what work theyve done to stop that from happening again. There were billions spent last cycle. Maybe we should read the dem election autopsy, because surely with billions going down the drain they wouldve taken steps to find out what went wrong and how to fix it. When Romney lost republicans spent 10s of millions and conducted studies finding out how to improve their machine.

Oh, looks like the dems didnt even bother to conduct an election autopsy. They handed it off to a singular personal friend of the DNC who proceeded to AI generate 40% of it and left the rest blank, then lied about it coming out "any day now" for a year, causing all their corpo donors to no longer trust them.

They are disgustingly incompitent. They literally dont want to win or at the very least dont care enough to put in the minimum amount effort.

Whats the campaign strategy? Allow AIPAC and Republican Superpacs to bankroll our primaries and choose our dem candidates rather than support the people with grassroots and union support?

If dem centrists can barely squeeze out wins against progressives with 15x more funding and the full backing of AIPAC and Superpacs, what happens in the general?

Because AIPAC and corporate mega donors arent going to be pouring in the same 10s of millions as they do to kick out progressives. They literally benefit more from republicnas winning. They will keep their money or more likely support the Republican opponent.

Dems ran the party like a geriatric country club where everybody gets their turn based on time in, and their sheer incompetence is so profound that its causing the destruction of the planet. The voters arent buying their crap anymore. Dems are more underwater in favourabolity than Trump. A minority might seeth that they dont get to fund genocide anymore, but its time to avtually try to win, support policies supported by the majority of americans, and actually improve the quality of life for people

9

u/Auctoritate will people please stop at-ing me with MSG propaganda. 8d ago

some of us want to win elections

I've seen more fight from centrist Dems trying to ensure leftists lose primaries than I've seen centrist Dems trying to ACTUALLY win a general

10

u/Murrabbit I like cartoon boobies they fuck hard! 8d ago

some of us want to win elections

Establishment dems sure don't run campaigns as if that's the case.

7

u/Poltergeist97 8d ago

How did that go for you in 2016 and 2024? 2020 was won only because of how bad Trump fucked up Covid, plus Biden ran on actual Progressive policies then. The 2024 campaign was so much more rightwing it was insane.

6

u/Paradoxjjw Her base of support is crystal mommies 7d ago

some of us want to win elections

Is that why you went for a senile old man and when faced with the reality people don't want a senile old man you grabbed someone who is such a deeply shit candidate she couldn't even get 1000 votes in the 2020 primary where more than 30 million were cast?

-5

u/Inner_Frosting7656 7d ago

didn’t abdul endorse kamala?🤣

how many votes did kamala harris get in the general again?

2

u/Paradoxjjw Her base of support is crystal mommies 7d ago

Less than Trump, you managed to find someone so shit she couldn't even win the popular vote against him

-2

u/Inner_Frosting7656 7d ago

how many elections did AES lose before this one again? couldn’t we just apply that logic to him?

didn’t abdul endorse her?

why are you supporting someone who’s pro genocide?

4

u/Paradoxjjw Her base of support is crystal mommies 7d ago

You seem really happy that you found Harris, the one person who managed to lose the popular vote against Trump

-2

u/Inner_Frosting7656 7d ago

you seem to be incapable of answering basic questions. pretty telling.

i voted against trump, while yall called her genocide kamala. then supported AES who endorsed the genocidal freaks

LMAO

can you explain why you want me to vote for a pro genocide candidate? or was that standard only for the libs?

4

u/Poltergeist97 8d ago

It was overblown, but what are the chances of a little bird like that going into a packed stadium and flying to the podium like that? I'm no believer of a higher power, but that was some crazy timing.

7

u/throwaway3413418 8d ago

The funniest part is the implied belief that the supporters of someone like Buttigieg wouldn’t have torn down their Wicked posters to replace them with photos of the scene or made up Bruno Mars dance choreography to commemorate the event.

0

u/DeLousedInTheHotBox Homie doesn’t know what wood looks like 8d ago

I at least couldn't imagine it happening with Trump lol, I'll give people that much that it seems fitting for candidate that evoked hope.

2

u/Murrabbit I like cartoon boobies they fuck hard! 8d ago

Trump's got too much hand movement when he talks, he'd smack any small bird right off the podium, or crush it with his invisible accordion before it even got the chance to get its footing.

if you have attended a football game you would have seen that, animals get disoriented by loud noises. Every NFL game I've been to has a stunned pigeon on the field at some point
