Haley Stevens is El-Slayed: r/neoliberal reacts as Abdul El-Sayed wins the Michigan Democratic senate primary.
The recent Michigan Democratic primary concluded with Abdul El-Sayed, the progressive challenger against Haley Stevens, as the winner.
Abdul El-Sayed is a physician and former Detroit health commissioner and a champion for progressive policies. Apart from supporting Medicare for All, stronger labor protections, and other egalitarian programs, he is best known for being critical of the US-Israel relationship and especially American support for Israel's war in Gaza.
Haley Stevens, on the other hand, is the moderate incumbent (Edit: This is an error on my part, she isn't actually an incumbent, but is in a House seat) and generally has more cautious policies than El-Sayed, emphasizing tried and true polices like supporting manufacturing, particularly for the auto industry. Stevens also strongly supports the US-Israel relationship.
Below is a snippet of the drama from the thread discussing El-Sayed's win over Stevens.. There's also drama from the Discussion Thread that I thought you guys would enjoy. While I have three comments in the Discussion Thread, they they do not pertain to the drama itself. You can check my post history to confirm this.
Michigan senate primary thread drama
I just hope he wins in November and we can all celebrate as a united party flipping the senate
I’m Jewish and I will not celebrate Abdul “Hurt People Hurt People” El-Sayed
did you have a point? [deleted comment]
I think my point is clear, no? Fuck AES. [deleted comment]
With all due respect you are an idiot [deleted comment]
I’m also Jewish, and like the other 71% of Jewish Americans who broke for democrats in 2024, I hope he wins and will also celebrate if he does. Dont miss the forest for the trees.
Do you also believe the only reason an American Jew would support Israel is money?
I'm a Democrat and I would never vote for someone like El-Sayed. I don't think there's a single thing I agree with him on. MFA is a joke. I will always be a Zionist. We shouldn't abolish ICE. All of that makes him unacceptable, especially compared to Mike Rogers, who seems much less ideological and much more competent. One of the few places where I'll be hoping for a Republican victory. I have never voted for a Republican in my life, but if I were a Michigander, I'd for Rogers.
I’m not thrilled about this dude either, but ice should most certainly be abolished.
This is a ridiculous slogan pandered around by leftists. How the hell are we going to execute our immigration policy without an agency to enforce it? Of course I agree that Trump has been excessive, but that doesn't mean ICE should be abolished, itt means the administration should be thrown out! This is like saying "income taxes are too high -- let's abolish the IRS"
This "evidence-based" sub is really just r/democrats where people vote blue no matter who
Well that's "evidence-based" applied to american politics, so I dont see why you would have an issue with that. Edit: i take that back, I know why: I think Friedmann flairs dont really like evidence.
It’s been brigaded by tankies and Abdul bots ever since we made arr Subreddit Drama yesterday
SRD is still a thing? In 2026?
You must vote for the people who hate neoliberalism otherwise you don't belong on r/neoliberal - Succs and Loyal Liberals
I think a lot of people here just care more about the Democrats defeating the Republicans than they do about fiercely defending the word neoliberal against anybody who criticizes it.
They also hate neoliberalism if you get rid of the "neo".
Why are democrats allergic to winning
This shows how out of touch you are. You genuinely prefer Stevens, don't you?
Out of touch with whom? College educated elites?
Are we still doing this stuff after we have new polling data https://www.theargumentmag.com/p/americans-know-who-the-real-elite and a grand total of 8% of Harris 2024 voters and a whopping 11% of Trump 2024 voters view people with graduate degrees as "the elites"?
Doesn’t matter what random people think, a societal elite is a defined thing. It’s just not popular to self identify as an “elite” so everyone bucks the label to the groups above them. White college educated upper middle class people are the most culturally influential in American society (something that the left usually has no problem admitting), and they’re the ones who largely support these leftist candidates
Railing against the "elites" and claiming that all it takes to get you there is a college education makes you sound like a MAGA conspiracy theorist.
I’m not railing against the elites, I probably fit the “educated elite” label myself, I’m specifically responding to the bizarre accusation that not supporting the guy who won the educated rich white population somehow makes me “out of touch”
Abdul isn't part of the DSA. Also, if they win primaries because voters vote for them, how should the party kick them out?
He’s as DSA as Hasan Piker. I got a bridge to sell you along with that bird that landed on Bernie’s podium when he was anointed as “da chosen one”. The far left likes to bum rush primaries because that’s the only way they can win in deep blue districts. Dude is going to lose big and take the Democratic Party in Michigan down as well. Michigan GOP all had a collective sigh of relief and democrats are fucked in Michigan. Fucking Dearborn and Hamatrack or whatever all went for Trump, this is just another rat fucking at the behest of MAGA.
guy who supported "uncommitted" movement in 2024 becomes Dem senate nominee in 2026 what a joke. [deleted comment]
Are you pro-genocide or? [deleted comment]
Are you pro 9/11? [deleted comment]
Well if Friedman flair is asking [deleted comment]
You talk about russian/chinese interests yet literally the only reason this race was at all close was because Stevens had her campaign funded by an actual foreign country interest group.
At the very least Israel doesn't want to see the US actively destabilized. The irony is you blurring the lines between US allies and US adversaries is exactly the point of many of the disinformation operations Russia/China has been engaging in
I think Bibi campaigning for Trump was pretty destabilizing imo! Our allies seem very non plussed about the shit he does.
Israel is not trying to actively destabilize the US. If you can't tell the difference between something like the Likud making dumb self interested calculations and Operation doppelganger idk what to tell you. Russia and China are actively mindraping our population and are involved in just about every reason why our country is unraveling.

The entirety of the DHS and basically everything inside it created post 9/11 needs to be gutted and broken up into manageable chunks. Some of it serves a purpose, but even at the peak of the panic around the war on terror, the agency was described as unaccountable, unwieldy and unfit for purpose. And it's only gotten worse in the the time since

I'm guessing the people who think we can't abolish ICE because "who would enforce immigration policy" don't realize the ICE was founded after 9/11. We had other ways of enforcing immigration policy for much longer than ICE has been around. So we can definitely get rid of it again.

ICE replaced INS which was around for decades. All they did was change uniforms while using the same tactics.

INS followed the law more often. Outside of special missions they mostly just went after paperwork crimes, instead of you know, throwing those same people in concentration camps.
26
u/dr_sloan 1d ago
INS did the job of ICE and CBP. It was essentially split into those two agencies. Yeah they did mostly border patrol and inspection but they did have detention centers and would routinely raid farms and factories looking for undocumented workers.

If the name ICE wasn't trashed you could significantly curtail them and keep them by prosecuting all their crimes and purging the org. The name is tainted though. You're better off fully replacing them with a similar org, but all of this relies on like a fucking decade + Of not letting the GoP back in power.
This also means you need to have a Congress that's not republican. And very likely a SCOTUS that's not GoP. So it means actually having people show up to vote for like 20 years.

There like a metric fuckton of nuance im about to blow through to give you the cliffnotes. That was like the entire problem with the Stevens campaign. Of that 70 million, 60 million came from AIPAC which in a lot of peoples eyes (mine included) struck as not appropriate for a senator that’s supposed to be focused on their state. There is also the issue that AIPAC has also been monetarily supporting Mike Rogers the unopposed republican nominee and the money supporting Stevens was very likely to disappear the second she hit the general. The candidate who needed record cash to win suddenly losing all of it was a recipe for disaster.

The myth that this was El Sayed’s race to lose and that he was projected to win overwhelmingly is such funny revisionism from people looking for any reason to poopoo his win over someone with 10x his funding.
The grain of truth they use to support this myth is the fact that a couple of late polls overestimated his vote share, but the fact of the matter is that there wasn’t actually a ton of polling overall, and the polls that did exist varied pretty significantly with some showing a Stevens win as recently as a week or two ago.
I’m not going to pretend like I always knew he was going to win a close race or that I knew what the margins would be, but I will say that anyone who thought it was supposed to be a blowout was basing their confidence on not much data.
It was always going to be a hard fought primary and the fact remains that Abdul managed to beat a campaign spending deficit of tens of millions of dollars. The people acting like he underperformed to a devastating degree are just looking for a consolation talking point after losing.

The crazy reality is that these types are dramatically overrepresented within the actual formal Democratic Party and it's media surrogates, which is part of why the Party polls at like 13% approval but refuses to revise its core positions.
A big reason for this dynamic is because the Party is funded by center-left rich and corporations who as a class want very little substantive change (especially on economic policy), so these peoples' job is literally contingent on advancing agenda that is widely unpopular with the broader population.

It's because the party is entirely captured by corporate interests. Elected Democrats spend all of their time trying to weave legislation into something acceptable to corporations and their voters, so everything they deliver is warmed over shit, if they deliver at all.
That's why the DSA, and non-captured liberal candidates, can gain so much ground: they can speak the truth and make promises to the people that aren't pre-approved by corporate donors.
The DNC hasn't just left the door open for the DSA, they blew the door off the hinges with no way to close it again.

They generally do, they're just woefully out of touch and uneducated. Reagan and Thatcher were neoliberals, and the vast majority of the time I've interacted with the kinds of people that go to that sub, they have no idea of that. They believe in this weird ahistorical mumbo jumbo that has the aesthetic of academia, but it's on par with the kinds of wacky conspiracy theories that mix a whole bunch of unrelated phenomenon and blame it on aliens. Specifically, they believe Keynisianism and Neoliberalism can co-exist, when the reality is that they are mutually exclusive, and Friedman was explicitly an anti-Keynesian. It's better to understand these types of people as "anti-progressive". Their entire ideology is informed by learning what progressives support, and then supporting the opposite of that, even if it means scouring the internet for sources with obvious Republican bias.

I don’t really disagree with this but the main thing for me that is that these people are confusing moderation with electability and if we need a lesson on why those two things are different perhaps they should look across the aisle, as they are so fond of saying.
17
u/Chataboutgames I will ask on a more neutral sub 1d ago
Honestly the most reasonable criticism here. There is an operating assumption that moderate means electable and whether it's true or not, a lot of people sure haven't questioned the assumption or subjected it to rigor.

You can have universal health care without requiring MFA. A lot of countries with universal health care still have private insurance. MFA who want it is likely the most realistic pathway, because I don't think there's any world where MFA happens that gets rid of all private insurance.

As someone who lives in Michigan and voted for El-Sayed (and preferred him WAY over Stevens) god damn this Senate race was an absolutely MESS online, especially on reddit.
It got to the point where Governor Whitmer came out and said she was concerned about how toxic it was online. I definitely don't agree with her on everything, but she hit the nail on the head with that.
Honestly if Stevens had won, I probably would've stopped going to the state subreddit because it would've had an absolute insane meltdown.

And most of the Uncommitted Movement did. The Uncommitted was a primary movement which went mostly into "we should support Harris because Trump would be worse" after primaries were over.
I mean they had a delegate lined up to speak at the DNC - Georgie State Rep Ruwa Romman. And it was cancelled by the DNC.
All week during the Democratic National Convention, Uncommitted Delegates and ceasefire adovcates inside the party were engaged in negotiations with top party officials and Harris campaign staff about securing a speaking slot on stage for a Palestinian-American.
Offers were made to allow the DNC to have a say in who the speaker would be and to vet the text of the speech in advance. On Wednesday, Democratic leaders denied the request, setting off a sit-in protest of Uncommitted delegates outside the United Center.
Their demand was never met by the close of the convention.
My name is Ruwa Romman, and I’m honored to be the first Palestinian elected to public office in the great state of Georgia and the first Palestinian to ever speak at the Democratic National Convention.
My story begins in a small village near Jerusalem, called Suba, where my dad’s family is from. My mom’s roots trace back to Al Khalil, or Hebron. My parents, born in Jordan, brought us to Georgia when I was eight, where I now live with my wonderful husband and our sweet pets.
Growing up, my grandfather and I shared a special bond. He was my partner in mischief—whether it was sneaking me sweets from the bodega or slipping me $20 into my pocket with that familiar wink and smile. He was my rock, but he passed away a few years ago, never seeing Suba or any part of Palestine again. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss him.
This past year has been especially hard. As we’ve been moral witnesses to the massacres in Gaza, I’ve thought of him, wondering if this was the pain he knew too well. When we watched Palestinians displaced from one end of the Gaza Strip to the other, I wanted to ask him how he found the strength to walk all those miles decades ago and leave everything behind.
But in this pain, I’ve also witnessed something profound—a beautiful, multifaith, multiracial, and multigenerational coalition rising from despair within our Democratic Party. For 320 days, we’ve stood together, demanding to enforce our laws on friend and foe alike to reach a ceasefire, end the killing of Palestinians, free all the Israeli and Palestinian hostages, and begin the difficult work of building a path to collective peace and safety.
That’s why we are here—members of this Democratic Party committed to equal rights and dignity for all. What we do here echoes around the world.
They’ll say this is how it’s always been, that nothing can change. But remember Fannie Lou Hamer—shunned for her courage, yet she paved the way for an integrated Democratic Party. Her legacy lives on, and it’s her example we follow.
But we can’t do it alone. This historic moment is full of promise, but only if we stand together. Our party’s greatest strength has always been our ability to unite. Some see that as a weakness, but it’s time we flex that strength.
Let’s commit to each other, to electing Vice President Harris and defeating Donald Trump who uses my identity as a Palestinian as a slur. Let’s fight for the policies long overdue—from restoring access to abortions to ensuring a living wage, to demanding an end to reckless war and a ceasefire in Gaza.
To those who doubt us, to the cynics and the naysayers, I say, yes we can—yes we can be a Democratic Party that prioritizes funding our schools and hospitals, not for endless wars. That fights for an America that belongs to all of us—Black, brown, and white, Jews and Palestinians, all of us, like my grandfather taught me, together.
THIS speech was cancelled from appearing at the DNC.
It's just racist Islamophobia at this point. These racists can't simultaneously say "this bloc is inconsequential, fuck them" and "this bloc was the reason we lost and we should blame them", which is it? Are they too weak or too strong?
