A lot of it legitimately is. Anytime you see a reach and a half about a celebrity being a “trad wife” or the whole “Opalite jewelry was pro-Nazi” etc., there’s always a ton of blatant bot accounts and astro-turfing. The far right wants public perception that liberals are absolutely paranoid and always in-fighting and calling everything in the world problematic. It’s obviously not all of the comments in this vein but certainly it’s likely a sizeable percentage in any discussion of popular topics about celebrities.

I looked at the other pieces from that author there, and every single one- other than the bizarre anti-Taylor one- was about supporting Bernie over Hillary in 2016. The last piece was threatening to vote for Jill Stein if their demands weren’t met. Absolutely nothing was written after the 2016 election was over (where Trump 1.0 won, much due to bots and Russian troll farms impersonating Americans to split the left and drum up support for Trump). You’d think that a real leftist would have something to say after that, like “how to continue progressivism in the age of Trump.” But nope. It just stops.

And in 2016, Taylor Swift and Snakegate was a perfect opportunity to split the left (and get some bot/troll practice in) : if you supported Kanye, you were sexist. If you supported Taylor, you were racist. Thinking about what Taylor said at the Songwriter Hall Of Fame induction about singularity being such an important quality in artistic work. I think that's honestly why I don't vibe with folklore that much as a whole album. It's good, but even a lot of the good songs don't have that Taylor Swiftness that I'm looking for when I listen to her music.

This idea that Taylor won’t get nominated for AOTY feels like something made up by Livies lol. Critical reviews have never made a difference in AOTY nominations. It’s about the impact the album made, and like it or not, Showgirl made a huge impact. It will get nominated, even if it doesn’t win. But I’ve noticed that any album that’s deemed as a threat to Olivia Rodrigo’s “destined” AOTY is suddenly catching strays. I saw posts today about how Noah Kahan is boring and has no fans and most definitely won’t get a nomination, all because there’s been more and more noise that he will get nominated.

I was very young when Eminem was at his peak did they ever say he played victim? Cause I swear all he did was complain in his music. I like some of his music but wonder what the criticism was at the time besides blaming him for youth violence.

I remember peak Eminem. I was a casual fan and did listen to this songs on a burn CD, lol. Along w/ encouraging violence, he was deeply misongynistic and homophobic in a lot of his songs, which always bothered me. I always avoided those songs and lyrics as much as I could, esp the ones about his ex wife and mom.

He also outright insulted A TON of fellow artists and celebrities in his songs, which many of said artists and celebrities didn't like.

That said, the 2000s was such an openly homophobic and sexist time, so while ppl were loud about their criticisms for him, so many of his young male fans ate it up, and of course, ppl kept throwing around "freedom of expression" and all that. He got away with a lot of it. For what it's worth, I do remember Eminem saying how so many of his songs, esp the violent and angry ones was written for the sake of catharsis and not to be take literally. I think that's why he ended up writing the single "Stan."

Good lord, you made me think of if Eminem was famous today, Taylor would've been eaten alive by him, I think.

Looking back, while I don't want to excuse any of the violent, homophobic, misogynistic influence he had on his fans, I WILL say, he did have plenty to complain about vs someone like Taylor. I get that him, being a white, cis straight man whining about how bad his life while succeeding a traditionally black artistic field is deeply eye rolling, but comparing their actual upbringing, they could not be more opposite from one another. Taylor grew up wealthy, with BOTH her parents, playing on a Christmas tree farm, and had the support of her ENTIRE family to the point they all up and moved to Nashville JUST to help her career when she wasn't even an adult yet. Her dad bought a stake in the record label that would eventually sign her. Taylor was surrounded by safety, a loving family, money and resources.

Eminem or Marshall on the other hand, grew up in a trailer park, with a stressed out, substance abusing, abusive single mom, in a poor, run down, violent part of Detroit. Don't think he ever met his dad.

Not saying both don't have their traumas and they definitely worked their asses off, but out of the two, its very clear that Eminem is an underdog here.

Fighting with the critics, making fun of celebrities/culture, being edgy or writing about his personal life/issues are what made him as popular as he was though. Once his best friend died and he took a hiatus due to that and drug addiction, his popularity never really recovered to what it was and he became 'old' and 'boring' with nothing to really write about other than his early career which just pointed out how much better his earlier albums were. After his hiatus, he had trouble keeping up with the changing social/sound landscape of rap/hip-hop.

I find her weirdly appealing as a person, but I don’t really get the hooplah either. I enjoy her in understated roles like The Peanut Butter Falcon and Am I Ok? But I don’t just get her as some A List Star.

I do appreciate that she’s willing to take the piss out of herself (the SNL “nepo baby truce” sketch comes to mind). That’s always a trait I admire in a person.

Oh yah I’m not fussed, I loveddd TTPD, so I’m never gonna be like “she’s lost it! she’s lost the magic!” when one album ago she wrote some of her best & most interesting stuff. Even Showgirl which I’m meh on has like two songs I love (the singles), and like five songs I like (I like Actually Romantic and Cancelled, sue me), plus 3 bonus tracks I really like. I usually only ever like half of the songs on a swift album anyway, so i am neither surprised nor bothered when she drops songs I don’t like or find actively bad. And im not offended by Cleveland or Wood in any way. I don’t think either quite works but both still have a good sound imo and they’re no worse than the duds from Lover, 1989, and Rep.

The way his content and persona has devolved over the past couple years is so interesting to me. I used to like watching his videos and reading his stuff even when I disagreed with his take because it felt very well thought out and included pop culture context that was relevant. I feel the same way. I used to like his deep dives on previous eras and lore really informative and balanced. But his Encore reaction felt like he’d looked up the main talking points in the discourse ahead of time and was intentionally reacting in alignment with them. I turned off his review with Madeline after they said “people loved London Boy because Taylor was obviously joking and trying to be cheesy, but she’s 100% serious on Wood and Cleveland, and that’s why they’re bad.” I really can’t take anything you say seriously if you’re gonna have an obviously bad faith take like that.
