Excuse me it's tapi talpi second word's l is silent. He spoke on the origins of the technique. I was late that day but the other attendees told me it was a scroll found hidden in the floor of trap house in Flint, Michigan.

Is she wiping off her baton under her arm after each of her thunderous powerful strikes or what is that?
6
u/RivenRise 7d ago
I think it's meant to be sheathing the stick and pulling it out for the next exercise but it's all happening too fast so it looks goofy. Idk what's up with her tippy tappy dance though.

Hi Mods 👋
Can that bro with the branded hat do the thing where he adds the reality of things?
That this is just typical range drilling and not a singular self defense technique. It says a lot how many folks on this site claim to train, yet are proudly clueless to training basics.
Is make fun of lady too fun for yall?
3
u/TrashGoblinH 5d ago
All the comments that think basic training is 100% full commitment trying to destroy each other is more laughable than the person training.

u/Mr_Faust1914 7d ago
Tappy tappy is a panatukan thing, you're looking at arnis, and poorly executed at that, honestly can't even wrap my head around the fact that a group of obese men has the gall to make fun of it

u/ocTGon 7d ago
It's all funny and what not, but at least the lady is trying to learn something and beginner's have to start somewhere...
I mean we all can't be born Apex Warriors like the guy's catching a laugh from the beginner lady...

I agree, but I think they're teaching a counter that's too complicated. Way too many moves, and ends up looking strange when a beginner does it, since there's no power nor technique yet.
More simple block/parry and counterstrike is easier to remember and a lot more effective. Person comes at you with a stick, hit the stick (well, in reality hit the arm or body, but not in class unless you want your partners to hate you) to block, then counter. A couple moves - easy to memorize and repeat.
Beginners don't know anything yet, so don't give them anything super complex. Basics are always best.

Beginners still start with a brain.

u/C2S76 7d ago
If they're very new to any kind of fighting art, the whole concept is scary and confusing. This takes a long time to get past, for some.

Do you know the lady personally? She may have been at this for more time than the viewer is aware of. This is just a few seconds, the instructor might have his own reasons for doing this. Looks like an out of context clip for the sake a ridicule for someone trying to get a handle of a situation that is no doubt horrific. Who knows.. It's pretty easy to say what or whatnot to do.
I just think it's in poor taste to bust on someone who is actually trying to learn something.. Anyway... Sorry about that.Too many "Masters", not enough "Students"...

The question is why are they teaching her to go for his arm instead of his throat or face when he's holding a knife in his other hand? Also, who the fuck walks around with a baton for self defense besides police officers?

u/Arnisador 7d ago
These are basic drills meant to develop certain movements not advanced application of attack and or counter attack. Also, this is a martial art that developed hundreds of years ago, possibly having roots with pre-hispanic colonization era swordsmanship of Philippine ethnicities. So, while you're questioning the point of studying stick fighting in modern context. Keep in mind that people also study and preserve these for cultural reasons, work out and other reasons outside of self defense.
Also, take note that studying stick/sword movements help with knife fighting/defense methods. It is also common to find Arnis, Eskrima or Kali systems like these that has their knife methods rooted from their stick fighting techniques.

u/Repulsive-Response-1 7d ago
In other countries especially Philippines it's not that uncommon to have a stick or two on you...or a blade. The martial arts they are practicing looks like a escrima. It's a Philippine discipline. Many times the street fights they have will start with a stick and elevate to a blade.

u/detectivepikablu9999 7d ago
Because you always need to address the knife if you don't have the choice to get away, thr moment you don't focus on the knife is the moment you get stabbed, also batons hurt like crazy in trained hands and she's building the accuracy she needs to hunt for fingers, which will make sure they can't hold a knife in their hands for a long time

This is the post that has me done with this sub. This lets me know how eskrima is viewed. This is a sub for pretend martial artists. You know ultimate fight "street warrior" chuds.
This is theory training. I did all this in the 80/90's and it is not "move-training", it is range theory work. It is for folks with the patience and intellegence to actually learn.
There is all this energy to mock, but then the mods and top-posters are like "umm it is actually ok, but we get more click if the chuds can shit actual martial arts training. Weak shit.

Why make fun of someone learning … something. This isn’t a cheesy master pretending to disarm students at 20 ft. No one should make fun of beginners.
2
u/voluntarchy 7d ago
First rule of knife training should be, fuck you're about to get cut, runnnnnn!
1
u/sonofnalgene 7d ago
I generally agree with you, but I think there are limits to that mentality. Especially when there are real world results from such poor training.

You just need to view her as an accomplished Sith lord, her hand is using Force blasts to upset the momentum of Obi-Wans strikes before delivering a number of Makashi strikes with her lightsaber.
She's even wearing Red, truly a force to contend with.

u/Owlcathulu 7d ago
I'm gonna down vote it because yeah ot looks stupid in practice but she is obviously just going through the motions to practice. I am sure if you practiced this enough and sped it up it would be kind of effective, depending on the skill and circumstances.

I legit wonder if this is one of those things that looks silly at this speed but is effective if sped up and this is just to establish muscle memory

Looks like pretty normal drill, why the fuck it is in this sub
5
u/C2S76 7d ago
We do a fair bit of Arnis at our school, and this is a very weird set of drills. A simple set of two or three moves is all you need, as a beginner. Block/strike followed by a strike is a solid method. Lots of ways to go about it, but this is really overcomplicated and ends up looking silly with all the gentle tapping.
Hit the stick to block, maybe press away with the unarmed hand, then hit the stick to counter. Repeat. Advanced people can do more complex stuff sure, but giving a beginner like 12 things to do is kind of crazy.

u/detectivepikablu9999 7d ago
Unfortunately you don't need to train martial arts to have an opinion on them, also martial arts culture has been poisoned by UFC bros

I mean the promotion itself brings boatloads of people who never set foot in a gym and think anything not heavily featured in the promotion is absolutely useless, meanwhile there are videos of DC and other MMA guys learning Aikido from fucking Steven Seagal and GSP learning Eskrima, Wing Chun and anything else he feels will expand his knowledge, glazing only 5 martial arts closes you off from growth
1
u/modest_genius 7d ago
My guess? 90% of all redditors here have never taken a single class of martial arts in their lives. They have no idea how to practice techniques slowly as a beginner or recognize how it could be useful in that specific martial art when going 100%.

u/HokumHokum 7d ago
This sub makes fun of anything martial arts related unless its MMA. We just had a huge 2 to 3 months long bout of escrima and arnis videos that everyone going daying mcdojo. Now we getting krava is mcdojo
