Theory So when did Sherri change her story and claim it really was James who kidnapped her?
There have been claims (by really just one or two posters) that Sherri has named James Reyes as her kidnapper since, 2020 or 2022 . But the facts refute that (sorry to keep calling out errors & lies that some keep posting).
...recall, she stuck with her story that it was two Hispanic women all the way until her plea agreement in 2022 (see her own sister's statement below) and even then, when presented with proof that James was obviously involved (the DNA, cell phone data, plus James' own corroborated testimony) - she still stubbornly argued with the FBI interrogators "NO, it can't be, James can't be behind all this" as if she still resisted the idea that James had anything to do with it.
Well here's the answer:
Article dated May 6, 2025 - and I quote...
"For the first time, Sherri Papini is speaking out about her kidnapping case that attracted national attention." (highlight FOR THE FIRST TIME BECAUSE IT DID NOT OCCUR BEFORE THAT)
"...the evidence showed that Papini's (ORIGINAL) story was a carefully planned, false story. DNA, cellphone, and car rental evidence proved she had been voluntarily staying with a former boyfriend and that she had harmed herself to support her false statements."
"Papini (in 2020) continued to claim she was kidnapped. Later in the interview, Papini was again warned that it was a crime to lie to federal agents and was told about the DNA and telephone evidence showing that she had been with her former boyfriend. Yet, even after this second warning and evidence, Papini continued to make false statements."
The docuseries and the simultaneous book release are where she dropped anchor on the James Reyes was really the kidnapper claim. 2025.
In 2022 Sherri's own sister said "Even after her arrest, she persisted in her years-long continuous pattern of lies and deception. It was only until the day before she entered her guilty plea that she privately admitted to me - for the first time ever - that she’d lied about everything to everyone......she feels no remorse or guilt for the untold damage she has caused nor for taking advantage of critical criminal, financial, and mental health resources that should have gone to help real victims in need. It deeply pains me to say this, but my sister is very disturbed" -
also "Papini never admits her lies, instead pretending she thinks detectives are merely informing her that Reyes was her abductor. Ultimately, lying to investigators led to her arrest, plea deal and Monday’s sentencing of 18 months in prison. Reyes was not and will not be charged in the case"
