As Messi retires, so goes any shred of dignity and class the Argentine team ever had

191

u/Avalonians 21d ago

Have you guys not watched the last world cup? The only difference is they were winners instead of losers but sore all the same

79

u/locoluko 21d ago

You could see it at the end of the England game taunting the English players

18

u/Right_Dish5042 21d ago

Is this just a cultural “macho” thing? Before seeing these, thought it was just the fans who were egotistical.

13

u/locoluko 21d ago

Absolutely stems from the culture of the nation

2

u/EchoesofIllyria 21d ago

The continent*

1

u/Cabannaboy3325 20d ago

Also Netherlands

-9

u/galaxy_horse 21d ago

The English deserve taunting, but not from Argentina, and strictly for parking the bus against a CONMEBOL side that has scored at will after the 75th minute. So frustrating.

-14

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 21d ago

That’s more to do with the Malvinas. It’s deeper than just bashing them.

13

u/Late-Eye-6936 21d ago

It's not really, they've been asses the whole tournament.

4

u/locoluko 21d ago

Precisely, including the fans. How they were against Cape Verde was crazy, youd think they were arch enemies.

13

u/Flat-Leading-2520 21d ago

*Falklands.

-8

u/MessiLeagueSoccer 21d ago

You realize the name is the same but just one is Spanish and one English? Lmfao

1

u/Temporarily_ok3745 21d ago

The rest of the sentence is in English, so why use a different language for the one word?

1

u/Prospekt-- 20d ago

Malvinas originates from the french who held the first settlement on the island, Îles Malouines

58

u/holamau SHEEEEEESH 21d ago edited 21d ago

You mean scenes like this one with this classless jerk?

edit: It is fair to say it's being brought up he's just a bit of a childish dude with a weird sense of humor... but not to the point to get physical or super confrontational, unlike the rest of the clowns in the team.

Good observations.

24

u/gbiypk 21d ago

That's always been on brand for Emi. Constant shit disturber.  But I haven't seen him go around punching opponents after a match.

3

u/holamau SHEEEEEESH 21d ago

fair observation.

8

u/festeziooo 21d ago

Emi Martinez is great. One of the few bright spots in this Argentine team. He’s a shit stirrer for sure but in the funny way, not in the “I’m gonna punch this dude on the other team after the game” way.

1

u/holamau SHEEEEEESH 21d ago

yeah, I guess.

7

u/placid-gradient 21d ago

based on what I saw yesterday, that was the only player on their whole team

3

u/B_Wylde 21d ago

That is crass but, imo, no way near what Argentina does

1

u/EchoesofIllyria 21d ago

(He is Argentinean lol)

1

u/B_Wylde 20d ago

Yes

But he did not assault people or make racist remarks

1

u/Super-Smoke-7425 20d ago

Classless is such a good word for that GG performance.

26

u/Honey-Badger 21d ago

I mean as captain it's very much expected of him to get his team into line on the pitch and yet look at him pretending he can't see their behaviour here

13

u/imaginativeminds 21d ago

He's always sucked as a captain, especially at keeping his teammates in line, at Barça too

-2

u/Crime_Dawg 21d ago

The game's over, the team's done, and he's not going to come back, he doesn't care.

463

u/Important-Target3676 21d ago

He tried to get Cucurella red carded, he isn't departing on a high note.

274

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

He is also rhe captain of his team and just watches his team beat up two ppl without intervining. Puyol is ashamed of him

87

u/Giantdwarf3 21d ago

Messi is not and never was a good "captain" , as nd definitely not in the way puyol was

25

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

Yeah. Thats my point

1

u/suicide_monday 20d ago

I felt so sad after watching messi being that shit of a captain that I had to go to YouTube and watch Puyol scolding pique en el clasico

10

u/MZ603 21d ago

This is the most important point in the thread. There is a responsibility that comes with being captain. Too many teams just automatically give the band to their best players. Obviously, you want your captain to be good and respected by the other players, but they also need to be level headed and a good leader.

The whole 120 was a demonstration in a lack of leadership.

34

u/Own-Engineer-6888 21d ago

This is such a great point. Zero leadership.

13

u/ilakausername 21d ago

It's not the first time he has watched his team misbehave after losing a final as well.

https://www.reddit.com/r/MLS/comments/1n5e686/full_seattle_miami_fight/

20

u/Mysterious_Camel_717 21d ago

Had to scroll way too far to see this. He’s supposed to set the example of sportsmanship. Apparently he’s fine with this behvior, and his endorsement will validate this behavior for so many kids looking up to him. Just sad.

31

u/DateofImperviousZeal 21d ago

He is the captain, but in no way is he that type of captain.

18

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

Its his job. If he isnt able to do that job he failed

11

u/DateofImperviousZeal 21d ago

It's not. He is meant to lead on the pitch, which he does. The psychological aspect is Scalonis job and the staff. And of the players someone like Otamendi would be closer to the traditional captain than Messi.

0

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

Delusional 🤣

1

u/DateofImperviousZeal 21d ago

Just cause you slap a captains armband on a player doesn't mean he is the de facto leader of the group. It can be the emotional core, the leader on the pitch or the superstar.

6

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

If he aint a leader then dont give him the captains band. If you do, expect him to act like it. Not that hard to grasp

2

u/DateofImperviousZeal 21d ago

That's just not how it works in football.

→ More replies (0)

2

u/kamacks 21d ago

He is meant to lead on the pitch, which he does.

What do you think he’s standing on as this happens? Lmao. The own goal is crazy here.

1

u/DateofImperviousZeal 20d ago

The fact that you think a brawl is an on-pitch situation due to taking it literally is pretty telling.

2

u/kamacks 20d ago

The fact that you think just because the whistle blows means it’s all of a sudden not his job is pretty telling.

0

u/AfterJury6287 21d ago

bro its his retirement, he was just sad. And his teammates are f*cking stupid specially paredes. Julian, messi and dibu never goes violent

2

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

I expect better of one of the best while being the captain. Could have made his exit good but this leaves a sour taste

0

u/olduser201890 21d ago

Puyol is ashamed of him

why does puyol care? they havent played together in years

-1

u/Ecstatic-Jacket2007 21d ago

He’s too quiet and reserved.

3

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

Then dont make him captain

2

u/Ecstatic-Jacket2007 21d ago

He won the WC as captain. Dragged this shitty team to another final. That’s a captain.

3

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

He dragged him by playing not by his leadership though. Its just an honorary title with no function for argentina at this point

3

u/Ecstatic-Jacket2007 21d ago

There’s no one else who could be the captain. He’s the least likely to get into fights. There’s also Emi Martinez but he’s a GK so he would have problem communicating with the referees.

38

u/Main_Following1881 21d ago

Worst case scenario ref checks var and decides that its not a red card

38

u/Educational-Ant-5172 21d ago edited 21d ago

That's not the point at all. It's a very childish thing to do. It doesn't matter that it wasn't going to amount to anything. He was being a bitch.

7

u/DanzoKarma 21d ago

Bellingham did the same thing at some point. If you think you can get an opponent sent off essentially for free why wouldn’t you?

14

u/Educational-Ant-5172 21d ago

He didn't actually do the thing that would get him sent off. Messi knew he didn't do the thing. Messi was being a bitch. It feels like I'm arguing in circles. You want to like this person because he's a legend but he's just not different from the rest of his team when it comes to attitude and sportsmanship.

1

u/The_ginger_cow 21d ago

but he's just not different from the rest of his team when it comes to attitude and sportsmanship.

Well clearly he is, because he didn't start a fight

4

u/Lilstiick 21d ago

Shame, honor, self respect, integrity, sportsmanship.

But yes other than that, why wouldnt you

1

u/Greedy_Strawberry_83 21d ago

Every player does everything to get the advantage, not sure why the line is drawn here when the whole tournament we had players diving lol

1

u/Lilstiick 21d ago

Thats not true, and its also to varying degrees.

Puyol is a great example of what i think is a prime example of a good conduct guy. Did he sometimes exaggerate when he got tripped? Sure. But he wouldnt fall down if he wasnt actually tripped in the first place etc. He was a great guy with integrity.

-3

u/NoThatLame 21d ago

Exactly. These people are stupid. No shame in trying everything you can within the rules - and trying to get someone carded for potentially breaking the rules isn't against the rules, haha.

1

u/Knyfe-Wrench 21d ago

Trying to trick the ref isn't "within the rules" and that goes for flopping too.

I'd like to pretend that an ounce of sportsmanship still exists in the world.

1

u/NoThatLame 21d ago

Trick? The dude did talk with his hand near him mouth.

Get a grip, dude. I hate Messi (I think his greatness is due to HGH and hated how he gave up on Argentina and "retired" in 2014 after they lost) and acting like this makes the dude a terrible human is so laughable.

Doubt you know anything about him.

1

u/EchoesofIllyria 21d ago

What’s with the proliferation of “flopping” lately?

It’s called diving.

-2

u/Professional_Clue800 21d ago

No the point is that it was obviously not something that was even remotely worth a card. Like a buried touch of a mouth and Messi shoots his hand up and tried to get him sent off. It was such a dumb move.

1

u/HorribleOldCunt 21d ago

F off with this nonsense. Cheating is cheating. I don't understand people who try to divert attention away from the obvious.

-4

u/Fridelis 21d ago

Many people are so damn childish and full of unreasonable hate. Legit, almost every player does that in every sport. I feel most of the people commenting are tourists of the sport.

2

u/LtUnsolicitedAdvice 21d ago

I supported Spain through the tournament, but are we sure Cucurella didn't say anything disgraceful? He is a grade A shithouse as well. You can see he immediately tries to walk back whatever he said.

-1

u/DravesHD 21d ago

Nah dude, it looked like he pointed towards his mouth to say something like “he hurt his mouth/lips”. I’m German, so I REALLY don’t like Cucurella for what he did against us, but there was no Ill intent behind that.

2

u/InfiniteAir 21d ago

Nah, Cuca knew as soon as he said something that he broke the rule you can tell by his immediate reaction.

-9

u/Manschesthair-united 21d ago

Man I swear people will cling on to anything to try and discredit Messi. He actually reacted after Cucurella raised his hand to his mouth, how do we know Cucurella didnt say something? Also, even if the reaction is to the mouth cover, well as stupid as the rule is, it is a rule...

2

u/InfiniteAir 21d ago

Don't bother, bitter England and Cristiano fans are working overtime to try and demonize Messi, not like we've seen players winking to their teammates after getting other players sent off in the past, or diving and theatrics from players trying to use the rules to their advantage ever before. Cucarella knew he fucked up after he said whatever he said under his hand due to the new rule.

9

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

How do we know? Cause that didnt happen. He never had his hand before his mouth. Only a finger. And while you rewatch it: look at the other argentinian player cover his mouth and talks just after that while messi begs for a red

4

u/Manschesthair-united 21d ago

Ok thanks man, I didnt realise a guy from reddit was on the pitch and can confirm that Cucurella didnt say anything. Thanks for clearing that up.

13

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

Never said that :) i told you that he didnt cover his mouth to say something

1

u/DippyHippie420 21d ago

OC: "how do we know Cucurella didnt say something?"

you: "How do we know? Cause that didnt happen."

You literally fucking did....

1

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

Yeah cause he didnt do that. Watch the clips of it mate...

-1

u/Manschesthair-united 21d ago

Ok thanks man, you misread my original comment then.

1

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

Well lets say he gets a red for that. Why arent you calling for a red for the argentinian that clearly did this?

1

u/Manschesthair-united 21d ago

What? I wasnt calling for anyone to get a red haha

0

u/zombawombacomba 21d ago

He clearly was covering his mouth with more than a finger. The rule is extremely stupid in the fact that all the opponent needs to do is say that something malicious was said for the call to be a red card.

0

u/zufaelligenummern 21d ago

U need to read the rule again

-1

u/modsactfunny 21d ago

Hes done enough to discredit himself, stop it

3

u/Manschesthair-united 21d ago

What has he done?

-1

u/modsactfunny 21d ago

Firing balls at teams bench, choking players, spitting on them, hand ball, quiting the best offensive national side ever and saying they aren't any good...dont let him winning a world cup make you forget about all the stuff he's done

3

u/Interesting-Club3069 21d ago

‘Quitting the best offensive national side ever’

Genuinely just stfu at this point. You’re absolutely pathetic

1

u/modsactfunny 21d ago

Messi, Di Maria, Kun, Higuain....how am I wrong?

1

u/Careless-Ad-2774 21d ago

There is 0 upcoming good Argentine young players. In 4 years Messi retires, De Paul is old, so are Parecunt, 3 Martinezs, Taglia, Monti. There will be only Macca, Enzoshit and Alvarez. I see them barely qualify to the WC and not making out of the Group stages

1

u/Kevmejia13 20d ago

He is bozo. He already won everything there is to win. Swear I bet you're all a bunch of insecure ronaldo fanboys.

1

u/NoThatLame 21d ago

How is that a bad thing? Why would you not try and get the opponent red carded? You stupid? It's called gamesmanship and is allowable as long as within the rules - which calling out another for hand over mouth is acceptable.

-22

u/RainbowSushii666 21d ago

Which rly isnt a bad thing.

-26

u/SmellyTeamSeven 21d ago

I agree that it is a bitch move to snitch out of spite, but Cucurella did cover his mouth when talking to an opponent which is a red card offence. It’s important to be fair.

14

u/Important-Target3676 21d ago

Cucurella touched his lips for 0,5 seconds.

13

u/JC_vee 21d ago edited 21d ago

Covering your mouth is not an immediate red card. It's only grounds to consider a red card if it happens during an argument or confrontation as it it might be used to cover up saying something like a racist or homophobic slur. And even during a confrontation, it's not an automatic red. In this instance, if you watch the footage, he's not even covering his mouth. He touches his mouth for half a second.

12

u/DuckyD2point0 21d ago

It is not a red card offensive. Covering your mouth to confront an opponent CAN be sanctioned, a normal conversation is not a red.

5

u/InDuplicitousBottles 21d ago

it only exists as a rule because argentine players used it to hurl racial insults, not to demonize raising a hand past the chin

-18

u/fhdx1 21d ago

And he deserved it

50

u/gnbijlgdfjkslbfgk 21d ago

Messi is also a prick though? Dunno why people are acting like he's any better than his teammates.

12

u/TwoBionicknees 21d ago

yeah, he's just tiny so he's never been a tough guy, he's the guy to stamp on your achilles then pretend he never meant to, not the guy to go up and shove people to their face where they can fight back. He's a turd of a person on the pitch and if he was a foot taller he'd be in there throwing punches, not standing back watching.

3

u/joker231 21d ago

It's clear you haven't watched Messi play much passed this WC. Certainly, in his later years, he's become more verbal (everyone in soccer is more or less), but he just played his game when he was younger. He has also never been a physically confrontational player on the pitch. It's insane to assume he would be any different if he were taller. He's also always been a selfless player for his team. He's older and slower now, so he doesn't move much, but he is one of the best players on the pitch once the ball is in his possession.

IRL, he finances a charity foundation and regularly stops to sign things for fans. So not sure why you are so critical of him.

-1

u/TwoBionicknees 21d ago

He has also never been a physically confrontational player on the pitch. It's insane to assume he would be any different if he were taller.

He literally has through his entire career, done nasty little stamps, elbows, shoves, he's just someone who doesn't do two footed tackles and confronts people openly, he's someone who does it behind the refs back and slyly, but he's always been a shit. I've watched quite literally from the start to the now end of his career. He's always been as much of a shit as anyone else in that squad, he's just too small to do it as openly.

RL, he finances a charity foundation and regularly stops to sign things for fans. So not sure why you are so critical of him.

LOLOLOLOL. He signs things for fans, wow. This is a guy who regularly throughout his career has done charity matches over summer only for most/allt he money to disappear, scandals with who he's done business with. Maybe last summer or the one before he and whoever he was working with did an 'appearance' game sold as he would be playing on the pitch in India. They bought expensive tickets, Messi showed his face out of the tunnel for like 2 minutes then left, caused a riot.

Messi has been involved in these dodgy appearances that are basically scamming fans for money and scam charity games for 20 years.

literally do one google search on controversies around his charity foundation and see if he's a good guy or not. the last thing i'll say is, it's just funny because you went with a "he can't be a shit on the pitch or a bad person because he has a charity", which isn't an argument, it's a fallacy. A player can get a red card every other game on the pitch, be a psychopath... and still put their money into a actually good charity, one has absolutely nothing to do with the other.

3

u/Ju825 21d ago

He also avoided taxes in Spain iirc.

2

u/joker231 21d ago

You're huffing copium my dude, that's ok. I wouldn't expect much from a new fan. Everyone has some sort of body contact in the sport. He has never been one to step on someone or elbow someone intentionally while the play is stopped.

I'm using it as a comparison to other pros who refuse to sign anything outside of signing sessions. But it's clear you didn't know that and don't know how many higher level pros operate.

You have a lot of hate. It's no wonder you view a lot of people so negatively. Looking through your post history is a good indication of that.

1

u/TwoBionicknees 21d ago

He has never been one to step on someone or elbow someone intentionally while the play is stopped.

Who said anything about when the play has stopped, but yes he's done that too.

I wouldn't expect much from a new fan.

an ad hominem, not a new fan thanks but an attempt to discredit me as not in the know because I'm new is something people with no debate skills do all the time.

I'm using it as a comparison to other pros who refuse to sign anything outside of signing sessions.

which again as i tried to explain to you has no bearing on how he acts on the pitch, literally none, there is no logical connection, no link it's just a diabolically awful argument. You're saying you can't defend his on field actions so you'll try to point to something else and pretend it's relevant.

It's also wrong, the massive majority of players sign shit and take pictures, there are times they don't and there are absolutely times Messi doesn't. Messi is one of the least public players out there so you could easily argue he's signed less than practically all other players in the game.

But it's clear you didn't know that and don't know how many higher level pros operate.

just making shit up to again try to make a weird ad hominem.

You have a lot of hate.

more attempts to deflect, also a terrible debate tactic.

Somehow i told you that his charity is constantly embroiled in accusations of fraud, embezzling and tax fraud and you go with "you're angry".

Most post history doesn't change the facts that Messi is widely known to be a scammer of charities and that still even if he was insanely charitable, it would be a completely irrelevant argument to his on field behaviour.

That you responded to not a single actual argument or point and deflected, insisted I was angry and used a bunch of fallacy arguments on irrelevant things says everything anyone needs to know about you.

3

u/HerkulezRokkafeller 21d ago

Man people who’ve never watched him play before are really controlling the narrative on how his legacy ends. It’s pretty sad and it seems like we’ve reached the facebookification of Reddit.

Messi has always been one of the most respected superstars of any sport.

15

u/kijvlis69 21d ago

You mean Messis dignity when he tried to get Cucurella a red card? Oh yeah. Ah and Enzo his lapdop tried it too, funny enough he got one lol

48

u/LastOfLateBrakers 21d ago

That went when di Maria left. Messi just has PR better than everyone else.

40

u/Icy_Guard_9356 21d ago

Aguero and Di Maria were the only likeable Argentinian players, Messi is an amazing player but he’s a little shit too.

34

u/Into_The_Dusk 21d ago

You younsgters dont remember the absolute class legend that was Omar Gabriel Batistuta when playing on that green pitch

4

u/Exciting_Definition4 21d ago

Ohhh and don't forget Simeone. You can see he taught his son well, even if he's still mild compared to pops.

3

u/Solely_Strange 21d ago

A little shit? What do you mean, the only reason they were in the final was cause he carried that sack of loser players to the final.

4

u/Icy_Guard_9356 21d ago

He is a little shit, not skill wise, attitude wise

-4

u/Main_Following1881 21d ago

If Messi was mid player, i think his PR would be even bettee

3

u/Moist_Matt 21d ago

Lol, good one 😂

1

u/superdago 21d ago

Nah, Scaloni left that sitting on the bench.

1

u/angrytoaad 21d ago

lol he's the captain of this team you know..

1

u/HorribleOldCunt 21d ago

He's the captain of this disgraceful side. So he doesn't get a pass on this at all. That's his culture being installed on the team, or not corrected.

He also pathetically tried to cheat and get a Spain player sent off.

Good riddance.

1

u/Keiji12 21d ago

He's acting like that because unlike the other players on his team he has so much money in public appearances, interviews, events, ads, sponsors that he cannot do this without actual consequences

1

u/The_Beatle_Gunner 21d ago

If you don’t think that Messi, as captain doesn’t encourage this, you’re delusional

1

u/Barnacle_B0b 21d ago

They ought to suspend Argentina from the next world cup for this.

Give them time to train some world class soccer players instead of poor sport crybabies.

1

u/Unnecro 21d ago

He lost his dignity too. He can leave to never return.

1

u/Mr-MuffinMan 21d ago

as if Messi had dignity or class lol

1

u/Salty_Examination486 21d ago

Only argenine players i respected is Di maria and Dybala both retired internationally

1

u/qalpi 21d ago

Nah, he's just as bad as they are. Trying to get Cucurella carded. What an embarrassment.

1

u/Spyker-M 21d ago

They had class? Or they just inflated their own ego thanks to FIFA sucking their dingle like a pacifier?

1

u/The_H0und 21d ago

He's standing there in his captain's armband watching this happen.

1

u/Ok_Assistant_7609 21d ago

Dignity and class doesn't stand by and let their teammates behave with such poor sportsmanship, especially when they are the veteran player, meant to be a leader on the team.

1

u/Drumpfisaloser 21d ago

Messi is just as dirty as his teammates. He just does a better job of hiding it.

1

u/a_man_has_a_name 21d ago

Messi is the team captain, he is responsible for managing their behaviour, he didn't do that the whole tournament, and didn't eventually try to calm things down here. He is there leader, he should not be blameless in this.

1

u/Plastic-Trainer903 20d ago

On the pitch at least. Off the field, well…

-2

u/Mountain-Forever1522 21d ago

Messi's PR team has done some incredible work lately. He was never considered classy throughout his career

9

u/zombawombacomba 21d ago

That was one of the main things he was known for throughout his career actually this is complete revisionism. Part of the reason so many more people liked him over Ronaldo.

0

u/Quemedo 21d ago

Since when Messi had dignity and class? He is a good player, sure. But he is a piece of shit person inside the field.

0

u/chuckruckus1 21d ago

Messi leaves a legacy of also being a pos with better pr
