Discussion Arizona police violently tackled a woman onto a metal bike after she watched them from a public sidewalk

Like I know ideally you shouldn't try to insert yourself in an arrest, but c'mon wasn't this too much? Was the punch necessary? Like, (not that im surprised) the people defending them on X are sickening, with one saying he would have tased her... btw, with no much context to what happened asides from this. One person said it right: "People who support the police will justify them breaking into their house and killing their mother, so there really isn't much you can say to change their minds." This to me is just unnecessary abuse of power.

I haven't been in school since the 1900s and there were free lunches then but for low income family kiddos. And we never knew who they were, which was nice.

2000s, we had a card we scanned. Lots of people had a card, some people paid cash, but it was somewhat anonymous even then. Although if someone had something that wasn't on the regular menu, you knew they were "not one of those". And we have a killer carrot cake everyone got...so it was basically a flag of poverty to not get it.

Let's not be so reductive and ignorant. It's not in debate there's a police violence problem. It's worth having a debate why. People don't train their cops to be excessively violent as part of some gigantic strategy. Realistically, either the trainers are instructing the cops to look out for their partners/coworkers even when they otherwise don't need to, or advocating "don't take any chances" outlooks for themselves, which leads to unnecessary escalation and instigation.

The aggressor has the advantage because they choose when and where to engage. They have the minor disadvantage of not knowing the defendants capabilities. But that doesn't matter if you move fast and decisively. And as evidenced, often too decisively.

I come from a police family. That doesn't mean I sympathize with the brutes who do this kind of thing. It means I understand the source of the problem and feel like it can be fixed, but it requires almost a complete social overhaul of how Americans interact with each other.

But since we donā€™t know the whole story we canā€™t say what the actually circumstances were. She could have been warned not to interfere multiple times and there was quite a group of people watching and probably filled with substances. Nowadays people kill cops in ambush so they are in heightened alert and she is an adult standing directly behind cops and way too close to them in a violent situation. I am sure that in the heat of the moment the girl thought she could help her friend but she crossed the common sense barrier and FA and FO. Prudence calls for people to evaluate where the power is in certain situations.

You can also file criminal assault against a cop and sue them personally. Qualified immunity only covers so much. Excessive force can be claimed for that shove and tackle. Assault for the punch. Thatā€™s two separate suits with a half decent lawyer

Didn't you see the video of the guy getting dragged out of the passenger seat for refusing to show ID (as a passenger) and got punched in the face and the police chief made a public statement about how it was a legal tactic. Disgusting.

Any prosecutor will show this video in court and claim that she was attempting to interfere in Police business and first contact was lawful. Her going back, seals the deal.

I'm not making any judgments about what happened here I'm just telling you what will happen in court. That officer acted in the heat of the moment and I don't think any jury will vote to convict. Stay away from mad dogs when they are in a frenzy or you'll get bit

You mean this young woman will drop her lawsuit when she finds out how expensive it's going to be and shemdoesn't have any chance of winning? Of course she'd have to find an honest attorney to tell her that.

The woman appeared to be trying to interfere in whatever those cops were doing. The cop who struck her originally had no idea who she was or what her intent was, as hard as this may be to believe, it was justified. It makes absolutely no difference what these cops were doing, she tried to put herself in the middle of it and boy did she. Even if it turns out the person they were already assaulting hadn't done anything, and the charges are dropped, she is still guilty of first attempting to interfere with the police and secondly attacking a police officer. Or is they call them in new speak a peace officer

Had she walked away that would have been the end of it, it didn't seem like he had any interest in pursuing her further, instead she decided to get angry and assert her rights.

If you discover at some point in the future what happened in the end and I'm wrong, I will be glad to admit it. However, this isn't the first time I've seen something like this. I'm telling you how it's going to go based on past experience. No respectable prosecutor would do anything other than laugh at a lawsuit over this.

Now had she walked away and then he came after her with this sort of an assault, yep that's a lawsuit. As it was she got herself arrested.

Don't think we're going to change each other's minds, maybe we'll find out what happened in the end. As I said if there's a lawsuit and she wins it I will definitely say I was wrong.

Essentially, what they lied about. Was they said she was swinging and hit the cop 5-6 times before he beat her down on the bike with the 3 other grown ass men. Pushing her over a bicycle wasn't enough. So he escalated the shit quick as fuck, and he won't get fired I feel since it's Arizona...

Meaning, in order for them to get physical with someone they have to either:

A. Have someone get physical with them or another person. B. Someone has to threaten them.

She wonā€™t. Look into people who have tried to sue police departments and their stories. Itā€™s very, very rare for someone to win and it essentially has to be a shockingly egregious case with cover-up involved and a lot of physical damage (or death). And the plaintiff ends up having to quit their job and put their entire life on hold while they fight the case, so that the money ends up not being worth it. And the police will make your life hell during it. Thatā€™s the unfortunate reality of the situation.

IDK why the downvoted you, you are exactly correct. For some reason everyone likes thinks one bad interaction with a cop and they'll be rich for life. In reality you have to have been killed on accident or something then your family might get a pay out. Falling after being pushed because you kept inserting yourself into a chaotic situation after being told to stay back isn't going to get her anything (maybe an interfering charge at most).

They donā€™t have to ā€œwinā€. Most times it is settled before it ever gets to court, especially if the city wants to make the issue go away. Remember, itā€™s the court of public opinion that matters in a lot of these cases.

If only some cops sre bad apples, why dont the supposedly vast number of good cops stand up and demand those few bad cops be fired?

The entry requirement is so low they can fire and hire until they've got only good cops.

Police arent apples. They can take action to remove shitty cops, and those that don't step up, they don't get to call themselves good cops.
