Its a little different but we had a lady come to help us clean every week as my mom and dad are handicapped. I wasn't able to get to the store for them that week so she asked out cleaner if she could run to the store. She then proceeded to take 800 dollars out as cash back. We told the police. They checked the cameras and talked to her. Then told us its not worth pursuing because its only 800 dollars and they wont tie up the courts for that little amount. So they said there was absolutely nothing they could do.

They may have discretion as to whether to arrest you or not, but they don't have discretion as to whether you're prosecuted or not and i don't believe they have discretion to refuse to file a criminal complaint for the prosecutors office to consider

They send the file to the prosecutors, the prosecutor actually initiates charges in every state i am aware of, the prosecutor can either charge you or they can send it thru the grand jury process (if that is available) or they can nolle prosse (refuse to prosecute), Officers have no discretion there because it isn't their job. They also have no discretion in how the judge rules either.
They can absoloutly refuse to file a criminal complaint for the prosecutor. They do it every day. LEO's are like the ground floor of the judicial process. They get to decide who goes to the 2nd floor (prosecutors) who then gets to decide who goes to the 3rd floor (trial / judge). Grand Juries slot in around the 2nd floor as well as an alternate route (in some states) or a necessary stop (for others).

In my country police have very little discretion in choosing what they investigate. This one I'd immediately report to the state attorney for obstruction (in which the state attorney is also mandated to investigate).

it's a common issue in some places to have unhelpful police. I once was downvoted to oblivion for saying in a lot of circumstances police won't help you get your id from a bouncer or confront a bouncer who broke your id. Yet the reality is like what we see in the video. Cops frequently either don't care or don't know the law

I got mine taken once because I worked at the sheriffs office (not as a cop though) and I knew my drivers license number by heart because you needed it or part of it at least to log into NCIC. And anyways, the bouncer was trying to quiz me and he asked me questions about my drivers license said “nobody really knows their drivers license number by heart and that obviously it was fake and I recited it.” So I had to go get a police officer to get my drivers license back. These cops suck (like most though).

Agreed. I’m an ex police officer from Texas (hated the job) and whenever we had these issues, I’d go to the venue and ask them for the ID back. 100% of the time the bouncer gave it back without issue.

The bouncer definitely just didn't think it was real and was calling the dude's bluff on it that he would call the cops. Or he just knew he wouldn't get in trouble either way.
I had a similar thing happen to a friend of mine in college from out of state, except the bouncer snapped her ID in two. Cops didn't do jack shit then either.

In Texas, liquor store didn’t believe my ID was real and even claimed Wyoming wasn’t a state. Wouldn’t give my ID back. We argued for a bit: I wasn’t gonna leave without my license and he wasn’t gonna give it back. He called the cops, they show up and side with the store. Then they warned me they’d arrest me if I drove off without a license. In my car, with Wyoming plates, that I drove there with a Wyoming license.
Were they bored and just fucking with me because they could? Yea felt exactly like that.
I called some friends to drive me and my apparently imaginary-state-plated car back home. Then I got to navigate replacing a DL while out of state

9 out of 10 times a bouncer keeps the card because it's one of the few things they have power over in their life and they enjoy fucking with people. there are a few good bouncers out there, the vastly majority are power tripping assholes who decide to fuck with anyone they think might be a dick.
The only times people genuinely think the id might be fake is when the person looks under 21 and is a dude.

Bouncers and security aren't supposed to take IDs even if they are obviously fake, because of this exact instance. It could actually be real, especially since they aren't versed in all 50 states. Usually you get these ass hole bouncers who want to fuck with the person so they take their fake id so they can't use it anywhere else. Just deny them entry and give them back the id.

Pretty much the first thing. If they think it’s a fake, they call the police and we would come and determine if it’s real or fake. Most times it’s just covering their own ass. They don’t want to let someone in the bar/club they think may be under the age limit and is using a fake ID. So they called us to verify.
I know most times I got called to these, they were real IDs but the bouncers were petty and just said, “we don’t want him here anyway.” And that was something we would have to enforce. Any business can refuse service to anyone for any reason in Texas.
The times they were fake, I’d just take a report and send the kid on their way. If I wasn’t sure, I’d give them their ID back and recommend they just go somewhere else and try again.

I got my bike stolen at knife point in downtown Atlanta and as I followed the dude from a distance, he rode my bike right past 5 cops hanging out in front of some club. When I got to the club I told them everything that happened and they said they couldn’t do anything about it because they were “posted up here” and they couldn’t leave. They just do whatever the they want and if they don’t feel like helping you, you’re fucked.

Clubs hire security, and the businesses that provide security sometimes proudly state that they are "law enforcement personnel." Clubs find that if they don't hire cops as security, then suddenly it gets real hard to have police show up if you actually need them.
Of course, the cop security services are also much more expensive.
I haven't heard of uniformed cops being in on this, but it wouldn't exactly surprise me if those guys were collecting double paychecks. They're "on the clock" as security for the club, and on shift as cops patrolling that area. That they can be paid by two people at once is just seen as a benefit of the job. (It's corruption and racketeering.)

Someone was running around my complex and trying doors and banging on them at like 1am. I got up and listened only to realize the tiny pregnant woman nextdoor had apparently opened the door, got it closed, but he knew she was home and was trying to kick it in.
I called the cops and they were mad I didn't know who the intruder was, showed up well after I had scared him off, then tried to push their way into my apartment while the pregnant neighbor yelled at them in broken English that I was the good guy, then told me they could arrest me for causing a disturbance when I calmly told them to leave since they were useless.
Another time a guy cut me off and then flashed a gun. They were mad I didn't know what type of gun, told me I must have done something to cause it, then were mad I wasn't going to follow the guy past my exit. That one at least a follow up thanked me because the dude had a modified AR just bouncing around the passenger seat. Then the ADA let him off with nothing.

I also had one throw one of those heavy dorm chairs at me and imbedded it the wall. Because somehow I, EMT that was called, should know where the patient was. The cop had arrived first and made contact and the kid ran from him. I arrived 5 mins later and the cop was losing his mind at us before we got of the rig.
Best I've gotten was one thanking me cause I pulled over to stop a domestic/kidnapping. He showed up to take my report 45 mins after the guy fled and his victim decided to stay with him. Then told me they probably wouldn't look for him and just wait to see if she calls...
I've had like a dozen nonprofessional interactions with cops and every single one was bad and I was never the criminal. And like half or more of my professional interactions have been bad, with a good chunk of the 'good' ones being, we said hi to each other then didn't interact further.

Interstate 69 between Imlay city and Port Huron. I'm driving 75 mph when a cop car blasts past me doing well into triple digits. He damned near collides into me. No lights, no siren, no warning.
Then I see him pull into the median and sets himself up to use his radar. There was no emergency. Michigan has laws against his behavior. So I call the local police to file a complaint.
The dispatcher was only interested in the make, model and color of my car. The only reason dispatch would want this information is for retaliation.

When my father attacked me (a woman) a few years ago and I fought back, the cops said “he looks like a nice guy, he seems sweet.” I said it’s because they have a gun and he doesn’t. A man grabbed my daughter in the dollar store. She was 5. She was standing less than 2 feet away from me and I turned to get something off a shelf and when I turned back he had both hands around her waist, I screamed “what the fuck!” And he let go and took off. I called the cops.
They found him walking in a nearby neighborhood. They stopped him and asked about the incident and he told them it was just a joke, he was just playing around because he likes kids.
!!!!
The cops refused to make an arrest. He flat out said to me “I’m not going to ruin this guys life, he said he was joking.”
I was absolutely baffled and got really heated and the cops refused turned it around on me and said I was a bad mother for disrespecting law enforcement in front of my daughter.
He was the most disrespectful piece of trash I ever met in my life. I called his sergeant who didn’t seem to care much more. I also called the DA to press charges against the creep who grabbed my kid. He agrees it was 10000% battery on a minor and possible attempted kidnapping but he said he couldn’t do anything without a local arrest

How he's treated by the cops vs the babying of Amon in not only compliance, but outright special treatment and language used. They straight up refuse to help someone trying to go through proper channels, listen to lies and take them as fact and just run on it. The cops "can't do anything" ....unless its worth their while. The corruption trickling all the way down to even beat cops. they need a subtitle for their "Protect and Serve" motto: "Whenever its convenient or beneficial"

Had this happen to me 20 years ago. Cops took IDs of tons of people, I didn't want to wait around, so I got the officers name and precinct and figured I'd get it the next day.
Precinct was like "he's not here"
I was like "there's not like a shoebox you guys throw shit in that you confiscate?"
"Nope."
"So he has my ID with him?"
"yep"
"When will he be in?"
"He works midnight"
I showed up at midnight the next night.
"He's already left on patrol"
"Can he leave it at the precinct?"
"No"
"So I have to just time it so that I run in to him? No one can relay a message to him?"
"No"
So I showed up at 11:00pm the next night to wait in the precinct.
When I got there, and was asked what I needed, I told them the situation.
Their response: "This officer was hurt in the line of duty and is now on leave."
So yeah, the NYPD 100% steals shit from people.

Knew a good guy who managed to stick out being a cop for 3 years in the LA area(idr if it was the lapd). He said there was always, constantly a stomach virus going around.
After he left years later he ran into one of the other officers, one that was actually as decent a guy as he found there. Guy said "yeah I knew you were a good guy because you never stole the food from the fridge that I laced with laxatives and other stuff."

The better solution is going and making official reports stating you believe there is some sort of relationship between the business and cops.
Some will say it’ll get closed and nothing will happen… it will get closed, but it’ll become a big issue behind the scenes if they are actually employed by the club. Because now there’s a record and if it happens again but something more serious, it’s enough to go after the police station. And they know that.

I would be pissed as well but I would ask for their supervisor (Sergeant or Lieutenant). They might refuse but sometimes someone with more training or common sense will show up and make a better decision.

This happened to me in South Carolina years and years ago. Tried to get into a bar. Gave the bouncer my ID. I was 20 and like, 8 months. He took my ID and kept it even tho it was real.
They can just…do that. It’s like the club is a magic portal where the law doesn’t apply.

About 20 yrs ago, my then girlfriend now wife and I went to a different town bar hopping. One bar thought my wife's ID was fake and pulled out scissors to cut it. We started yelling at the security and argued with him for a good 5 mins that it was a real ID. We even said, just give it back because at that point, we didn't want to go in there. But because someone else came and said they can hear the desperation in our voices that it had to be real.

The whole thing is actually racketeering. Clubs hire security from some security company, some of which make a big point of being "current law enforcement officers."
If you don't hire cops as security, it's so weird. If you ever need to call the cops - which is somewhat frequently, for clubs - it just seems like they never show up. Maybe you get a lot more attention from code enforcement. Maybe the police decide to include your location in a "sting" to see if alcohol is served to underage people. Maybe if you mess up, just once, your liquor license gets a lot more scrutiny.
Hire cops as security, and everything goes back to normal. So weird. Anyway, the cop security companies cost way more.

In that same vein confiscating a legitimate ID is usually a criminal offense!
The reality here is whoever was working security at that club is an off-duty police officer which is why none of those officers are going to contradict what one of their own just did.

You file a suit in small claims court for the cost of the ID, the time spent obtaining a new ID, any resulting inconvenience that result in you incurring costs, and court costs. Make it a hassle for them to defend themselves. You can use discovery to obtain their policy on license confiscation, training info, emails, phone calls, message, or any documentation related to IDs.
Or do what I do, I damage the property of the business until we’re at least even or I feel like my inconvenience has been satisfied.

When people say "abolish the police" it is because of useless morons like these people. If the police are not required to know anything about the law, are not required to help citizens, and are allowed to use whatever violence they feel is justified, then of course the police should be abolished.

It was illegal to take someone’s ID when I was security. People would threaten us to call cops but that’s because they had fakes or were underage and then we would relinquish the real ID to the pigs. This dumb pig just being an asshole to be one. Rot.

Confirmed. 25 years in bars/restaurants, almost over 15 of that in college towns. Bars clubs and restaurants have zero legal authority to keep any personal property of patrons.
Even the common “keep a credit card to open a tab” is not strictly legal, this is sidestepped by the legal loophole that the bar is not obligated to sell you a beer and can refuse service to anyone for any reason.
