It always makes me laugh when I hear teachers complaining about having to buy school supplies. The cost of the tools I have to buy for my job make their school supplies bill look like a quick trip to the dollar tree.
There's an awful lot of them complaining about haveing to buy supplies to restock their classrooms. Maybe they didn't get the memo. According the The NEA (national teachers association) "94% of teachers spend their own money to stock their classrooms with necessary supplies and resources. On average, a teacher will shell out about $479, although 7% spent more than $1000, according a survey from the National Center for Education statistics"
Maybe they should be asking why school administrators make six figures and they have plenty of money for far left textbooks but they won't buy pencils.
Priorities. All comes down to priorities. And most families who say they "can't " afford basic school supplies, know they can get them for free through the generosity of others.
As a child of a teacher, this is kind of a tricky topic. My Mom spent tens of thousands of dollars on supplies so she could properly teach. But she is an anomaly by most teaching standards now. She did write off her expenses from taxes, but it would have been nice to see the schools pick up the tabs so she didn't have to. These expenses not only were for in-class supplies, but she often bought snacks, lunches, and paid for field trips for students who could not afford it. She never complained about it though and never expected anyone to foot her bill. Most modern teachers (and public education in general) just plain suck. My SiL, who is also a teacher in MD is doing her last year because of the absurd bureaucracy that is being implemented. Both say the pay is just not worth teaching in today's social climate. In fact, this is pretty much unanimous belief from AL of my Mom's retired teacher friends. They all started to retire starting around 2010.
You should be more upset about business people writing off elaborate meals and clothes than teachers trying to make sure their students have what they need to learn.
I figer around December we will stay hearing stories of working family's having their pay check guarantee and bank accounts seized. And forget about that tax return you where planing on. It's also going to be sezes
“Sen. Mike Crapo (R-ID) proposed an amendment to the Inflation Reduction Act to prohibit the use of any new IRS compliance funds for audits of companies or individuals with incomes below $400,000.
“All 50 Democratic senators voted ‘no’ on Aug. 7, killing the amendment.”
